The front door flew open and three hefty men walked in. The scarred man was in the front while his boys followed closely behind .

" Daemon " I said to the scar-face and then pointed to Uyi " He is all yours. Do what you know have to "


Scar-face brought out a gun and I moved back to allow him pounce on Uyi.

They strapped Uyi to a chair . They bound his arms and feet , tying them in such a manner that he couldn't breathe properly . Daemon jabbed Uyi on his jaws repeatedly. They dilapidated whatever form of courage and stronghold that he had left in him. They made him began for death.

" I don't know anything about that night, please have mercy " Uyi begged whenever they took off the rope used to cover his mouth

His once white vest turned pigment red. The Nysc logo at the divison between his breasts disappeared under the mask of blood clotting.



" You have the strength to withstand torture ehen" One of Daemon's boys uttered.

Daemon laughed and threw a punch to Uyi's right rib when he said "
" leave am , E dae form jaga-ba--an"

" Urhh--fff--uarghh" Uyi groaned out in pain.


After thirty minutes of torture , Uyi was already broken.

I walked up to him . I looked him in the eye , His face was swollen allover . His arms fidgtted when I glazed my knife on his cheeks. It brushed softly on his fore skin and the surface turned red .
I took out a white hanky from my pocket and wiped his face dry. I pulled down his mouth band.

" Efua , How could you do this ? I thought we were ..."

I slipped the rope back on " shhhhh..." I began " I know. We are friends and that is why I am doing this . Only a friend would comfort you when you are in pains . Correct?


He blinked then glanced at Daemon .

" You dae look me ? You wann mae I brush your eye " Daemon said , already clasping Uyi's face before he continued " Idiot. You see fine girl lieh this you wann spoil her pride in broad day light. "


I grinned for a while then frowned almost immediately..

" I will make it stop. " I said to Uyi. " Just tell me what I want to hear. I promise this will stop "

After he came around from Daemon's slap then looked at me in the eye. I took off his mouth band . I shot him a stae of trust. *Only if he knew I feigned it.

He tried to say something. Then he said " I'm sorry. I ca-- I can't "

I stood up from my squatting position. Anger grew untamed in my heart . I left my palms on his face twice.


" How dare you? I said. " You look me in the eye and say ' I'm sorry I can't.' You will tell me what I want to hear. If you could hide your intentions from everyone in the past , you can still let loose that sly tongue of yours or else " I brought my knife in view " I .will. cut .it. off .and .make. sure -"

" I said I'm sorry Efua. which part of it can't you understand? It wasn't my fault "

One of Daemon's boys punched his abdomen at the wake of that statement . He coughed out his lungs.

" Whose fault is it ? I asked .

I realised that there was more to what he was saying . someone had put him up to it. He wasn't operating alone.

" Was it the Rita? I blurted out.

" No ! " He said and shook his head.


Uyi blamed me for everything and wished that I had corrected the wrongs before now, that things wouldn't have gotten so terrible.

"You want the truth right? I'll tell you " He said in a croaked voice " It hurts to say this . I'm so ashamed right now. "

"Because everything I did was because I loved you. Yes i did , but it hurt me before and now to know that you will never be mine. Do you know. how . painful it was , listening to your complaints on how Nosa behaved toward you in the past? You have no idea , do you?

I froze. My mind divided into a thousand pieces but were all in the same thought dimension : I had hurt him by simply confiding in him , how is that possible?

" You made me look like a fool , Efua " He paused as Daemon's boy tried to dash him an elbow.
Leave him to continue please " I said.

Uyi said he felt stupid standing up for me against Nosa occasionally and the height of it would always be a pat on the back.

Uyi said he had expected Nosakhare's attitude to get worse but he was also surprised at the sudden change in behaviour. And it was all because of what he had said to him.

" I knew I'd lost the game when I came home one afternoon. I was outside I overheard your discussion with Nosa. When he offered to -"

I smiled generously for the first time to that acknowledgment, since the confession began .




" Why did Rita not attend my party? I asked .

Uyi said he threatened her to stay clear off two kilometers near the party. He had told her he would get her arrested if she dared step foot into the vicinity. He said " Nosa was even glad she didn't attend the party. He knew things would go wrong if she had ventured in here"

He was silent . He brought down his head in shame. He raised it up again and pools of tears already mixed with dried blood ran down his cheeks.

My abdomen boiled with hot juice and I found my palms searching blindly for a nearby sofa . I found one and threw my weight into the cushion. Then I threw out the big question.

I checked my wrist watch , It was 1 :45 pm.
