Just like that? May i ask why.

Do you know what "humble" means?

hum•ble (hŭmˈbəl)►
adj. Marked by meekness or modesty in behavior, attitude, or spirit; not arrogant or prideful.
adj. Showing deferential or submissive respect: a humble apology.
adj. Low in rank, quality, or station; unpretentious or lowly: a humble cottage.

It has got to be the most nonpartisan first world country I've seen.

As students we used to celebrate our various cultures (Africans, Asians etc) like we were home and everyone used to participate.

Only the biting cold is a concern.

Stick with your oba and leave Yoruba affairs alone.

He is king because that's the tradition. You see, the reason why black nations are not developed is because we have decided to look away from our traditions and cultures. Apart from UK, do you know there are many countries in Europe with monarchs till today such as Sweden, Denmark, Liechtenstein, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Monaco, Andorra, Spain and Norway. This doesn't include monarchs in Asia

Do you know the reason why these highly democratic countries still have monarchs today? Because that's their culture and tradition. Canada today as big, rich and wonderful it is, they still pledge to the queen in UK, and the queen has absolute no contribution to their economy. Do you know why they do so, because that's their cultures and traditions.
No nation can't be great if you forget your culture and tradition. Like Fela rightly said in his "Teacher don't teach me nonsense" track:
Who be government teacher? culture and tradition....he went on by saying African culture and tradition has been replaced by corruption, inflation, mismanagement etc. which explain the reason why Africa is backward.

That is the biggest load of nonsense.

You sound like the imbeciles who claim that Africa's progress has stalled because Africans follow the wrong religion.

The problem is poorly informed people, such as yourself, who think that we must keep doing things that do not benefit the society.

If the king was a vanguard of progress and prosperity I would keep my anti-monarchist sentiment to myself, unfortunately for him I am familiar with the issues of Ile-Ife and that is why I ask what his purpose is? Why would people pledge allegiance to an office that offers zero services?

People attack the FG and the state governments in Nigeria but they do far more than this guy and the other useless monarchs.

Now let this slowpoke educate you. I never said African growth stalled because we follow wrong religion, I said the lack of our development is looking away from our traditions and cultures. I need to ask you some questions, why do you think corruption is so rampant in Africa? Why do you think blacks in U.S. are doing worse than their counterpart in Canada despite being in the same continent? Why do you think black race is looked down upon? Do you think scrapping all monarchical systems in Africa, will lead to development? Before I provide answers to these questions, I will like to see your opinion.

You don't go forward by looking forward.

Do you look behind you when accelerating in your car?

We need to be clear on what has hampered Africa and what has assisted out growth - monarchy has not helped. The monarchs of the past did not protect their people from the colonialists, nor did they protect people from the trans-Atlantic or Islamic slave trade.

We must not romanticize the past but rather embrace knowledge.

Blacks in the US are the wealthiest in the world - I don't know how you came to the conclusion that they are doing worse than those in Canada? Besides, you've thrown that false statement out there without acknowledging the history of both nations.

In case you don't know, the Oba of Benin remains the most feared and respected monarch in the whole of Africa. The ooni does not come close to the Oba in any way because the Oba is not a common figure who attend common parties and visit politicians in their houses to beg for handouts. Blacks in the US are the wealthiest in the world - I don't know how you came to the conclusion that they are doing worse than those in Canada? Besides, you've thrown that false statement out there without acknowledging the history of both nations.

Dude don't base your judgement on what you see on TV. The so called wealthy blacks in US are not up to 0.1% of black population. Apart from these black celebrities, the blacks doing well are African migrants and their children (by African migrants, I mean the Africans that willingly moved to America not those enslaved). Now lemme answer those questions for you.
You see, the reason why corruption is rampant in Africa is because our leaders have lost the African traditions and cultures that preach on morality. Most African traditions are based on morality, seeking out for others and being truthful to yourself. Once you interchange those morality for love of money, what you have is leaders that care for themselves and themselves alone.
On the subject of blacks in Canada doing better than those in US, this is a known fact and a complex one. Take away the very few celebrities, an average blacks of slavery descendants face alot of challenges. Do you know that over 5% of African american male are incarcerated in prisons (lower than 0.01% in Canada), do you know that black youth represent the majority of unemployed in America (very low in Canada), do you know that blacks have the highest homicide rate by their own race in inner cities of America etc (one of the lowest in Canada), do you know the percentage of blacks with 2 years or more post secondary education in US is less than 40% (over 85% in Canada). Surely, we shouldn't look away from how biased the American system is against the blacks. Having said all these, lemme tell you why blacks in Canada are doing better than their counterpart in US. The reason is because most blacks in Canada are immigrants and descendants of immigrants that are still very much in connection with their cultures and traditions unlike slaves descendants that had their cultures whipped out of them and given their masters' names
Do you want to know why blacks are look down on? Because we have lost touch with who we are, because we are making effort everyday to be more like Europeans, because we have forgotten our traditions and cultures, because we have forgotten how strong we are both mentally and physically, because we have been misinformed that how ancestors did absolute nothing before the Europeans came, because most of us do not know that our ancestors from the Nile gave birth to other civilizations in the world including Greco-roman civilization, because we haven't contributed to modern civilization in recent time as a result of having conflict with our identity.
Even if we eliminate all the monarchs, Africa will still not develop because that won't stop our leaders from being corrupt and self centered.
Africa monarchical institutions make us to remember who we are and how powerful we are as a race. We need this identity if we are going to move forward and not the quasi European identity we are all trying to be. However, I think we need to modernize the monarchical system which is the reason I have so much respect for this Ooni for his effort.
You keep saying the monarchs are useless but I ask, why do you think a country like Canada despite gaining independence from UK 150 years ago still pledge to the queen?

I did not say that all African-Americans are wealthy but they have more wealth than other black populations - they spend over $1 trillion dollars per annum.

Monarchs are often corrupt and because they are not elected by people but are rather said to be chosen by a deity it is harder to depose them.

This monarch lives better than everyone else in Ile-Ife - why?

Also, there are parts of Nigeria that do not have monarchs and have not had monarchs for centuries, that practiced a form of limited democracy. To allow people to chose their leaders has nothing to do with trying to be European. Coincidentally those are the same areas that have made the most social progress over the past century.
