Hello nairalanders, am a casual worker in one popular farm, and we live in the farms quarter. The farm is (Outstationed farm). Work start by 8a.m and end 5p.m we do work till 7p.m atimes without any overtime pay.

There is one particular day that we have closed for the work on that they and went to the village nearby and as soon as we returned we were told we've been given absent for that day work by the farm manager for not been around during the loading of perches to the motor that came to the farm.

This has been going on since in the farm. Pls Is it legal to b given an absent after closing hour and what can be done to stop this.

A lot of working conditions in this country is more or less slave labour. What plans do you have in place in case you quit?

It is all in your mind.

We can't answer for you. Even if I tell you that it is slavery... are you gonna quit?

You have that decision to make. What plans are you making to leave the farm and start up something for yourself?

Read this please! Dear Graduate What are Your Plans For The Future?

A lot of helplessness in this country, I can totally relate to this situation, OP as a matter of fact the only and only solution that would end the "slavery" is to set up your own venture, be it farm, supply chain, sales or farm services company, see a lot of options to choose from, so don't ever dissuade or pity yourself with that "with which money" rhetoric. Start saving and learning, soon there must be some niche you can fill conveniently and grow from there. You got it?

Employee Rank and Yank – the Enron Way!

An easy WAY to collapse!

The story of Enron, its rise and its fall, is a far history to many but the memory of what played out during the period will linger for years to come. The fall of the once “most admired” company in the USA came as a big surprise to many who thought that nothing could sink the great Titanic Ship – but it sank anyway!

When Ken Lay (late CEO of Enron Corp) employed the duo of Jeff Skilling and Andy Fastow, everything seemed perfect. Within a short period, Jeff was made the CEO and Fastow, CFO. These people were later known as the SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM. Jeff, in order to surpass the market figures, initiated drastic and cruel measures so as to motivate (or intimidate) employees in meeting company set targets – either by hook or crook. Two of such measures were the RANK and YANK and “Mark-to-Mark” figures. In RANK and YANK, the employees are rated based on their performance every month and the last 15% are sacked – straight SACK! The result? Every employee decided to use every [im]possible means to meet the damn company target while undermining (or sinking) the company by all means. Gradually, the rut of corruption, shylockism and deadly means crept into the Enron Corp. Jeff, Ken and Fastow sucked the company until the Titanic sank gradually in 2001/2002. Senior managers, who saw the fall coming, helped themselves to the loot. And that was the end of Enron Corp – a multi-billion dollar oil and gas, energy company. Jeff was sentenced to 25yrs, Ken died of heart attack and Fastow is now an office clerk after serving 6yrs imprisonment.

The story plays out on a daily basis in most Nigerian companies – especially private corporations. The managers intimidate, mandate and use all sorts of ways to manipulate employees into corporate “slavery.” The results? The Enron Way! When banks began with their unrealistic targets for their marketers (as they still do), the rate of bank failures and frauds increased – most especially, in the so-called new generation banks. The managers of these organisations believe in getting results by threats, intimidations. Sure, they get the results but they get the WRONG RESULTS that sinks companies. And where are those bank CEO’s?

Corporate existence depends on employees and SMART Plan. Employees are the first point of contact between the company and their clients/customers. If employees work under duress, the customers will feel it and move on. If the employees enjoy themselves, it will reflect in the customers’ attitude – simple. If a company has a staff turnover of more than 30% within 2 years, it is a red flag – danger. It simply reflects the inefficiency of the oga@thetop. Unfortunately, too many companies in Nigeria are proud of staff turnovers of 120% in a year – and they wonder why things are not just moving fine for them….I wonder too!

Employees are neither slaves nor animals. They are humans and they have feelings too. Psychologically, few can be motivated by threat. Threat does not work with everybody and it is a no-no for abusive languages. Equip yourself with Emotional Intelligence as a manager and you are bound to reap the fruit of having those wonderful people called employees. Fail to master Emotional Intelligence and you are setting yourself up for a big failure –either now or in the nearest future.
Avoid going the Enron Way!

Na GOD get power.

All you workers should come together and show them the power of unity!

Remember Spartacus (Oh no you did not watch the film)

Each of you can do nothing alone! Come together and agree together! And do whatever it is that you agreed upon!

Otherwise your savagery continues

Technically,
Only slaves work in farms..

The history of slavery is incomplete without the mention of the use of the slaves as workers on Sugar Plantations and all in the West Indies.

You sound like a staff of Okomu Farms.

@bodex196

1. Work start by 8a.m and end 5p.m we do work till 7p.m atimes without any overtime pay.

Have you Officially communicated to the Management about the extra 2 hours of your over time work? If yes what did they say, if not, that is the first step, the feedback will let you know if its forced labour or not.

2. There is one particular day that we have closed for the work on that they and went to the village nearby and as soon as we returned we were told we've been given absent for that day work by the farm manager for not been around during the loading of perches to the motor that came to the farm.

Did the Manager inform you about the Loading of the Peaches? Where you aware of the loading of the Peaches? if you were aware and you were told about loading of the peaches, then it was wrong of you to enter the village nearby; if the contrary was the case, then you have to appeal to the manager and make your case. He is human you know.

3. This has been going on since in the farm. Pls Is it legal to b given an absent after closing hour and what can be done to stop this.

There are alot of sides to this story. Telling us the terms and condition of your employment , will let us determine if its Legal or not.

Is there a contract? if yes you can take it up legally, if No, there is little you can do. Stop this slavery talk... if you don't like the job, there is a resign option.

In my company, I wasn't paid for July because there was no meaningful work in the site. I mean a dredging company where salary is just 30k. I think we should have Labour officers in the ministry of Labour to always check things like this out
