There are plenty issues on the frontpage, meneski. Chief among them is the unending 'Afonja vs Flatinoes' brawl.

Some or even all of the stories should be tailored to foster peace among the duo in a detribalized manner.

Soothing the polity through literature. That's my suggestion. People can offer theirs.

Thats right. After all we are the mirror of the society. Maybe our creativity can bring peace.

Father returns

The journey had been smooth and quiet especially with my still frail father beside me. The plane taxied on the runway for a while and my dad woke up just then. His expression was grim. The doctor had told me that he was still struggling but after two months away, father had insisted he wanted to come back. I understood his fear especially with the frayed state of his conglomerate.

My brothers Jerry, Peter and Paul were on hand to receive us. I could deduce that they were eager to hear the old man speak. I held my father by the side and led him to the waiting car. We drove back to the house in a convoy. I immediately led father to the room with the hope that his weak health will benefit from the rest. His croaked voice stopped me in my tracks.

"Tell those boys that I would address them tomorrow."

I nodded and left the room. My brothers hurried to meet as soon as I stepped out of the room. I relayed the message to them but I could see the disappointment on their faces. The conglomerate was in trouble. My brothers were in charge of various unit of the conglomerate and they had been haggling for a separation as the times was hard. I waited with baited breath for the all important meeting tomorrow.

Father was seated in the main sitting room when I led my brothers into the Villa the next day. He waved at us once we greeted him.

"No need to waste your time, I know there are problems currently and I want you all to find a way to solve your problems. I want you all to understand that it will be over my dead body that this conglomerate will be broken."

He picked the cup of coffee beside him and drank from it. I knew he had finished talking but he had missed the point. My brothers looked agitated and immediately I knew a change of leadership was imminent unless there would be chaos. After all, we had as much claim to the functionality of the conglomerate as our father.

Hallelujah!

“Congratulations, we are pleased to inform you that you were successful during the interview process, the…”

Akin did not wait for the caller to complete his sentence, he had heard enough. Flinging the phone, he climbed on the mattress singing “Hallelujah! O ti se fun mi… O ti se fun mi… Olorun Eleda mi modupe o!” The noise immediately drew Titi into the room, running and struggling to catch her breathe as she watched her husband with surprise.

Oko mi, ki lo de?’ The perplexed woman asked. The look on her face told him she had asked before. For an answer, he hugged her, swirled her around, and gave her a full kiss on her lips as he proudly announced, “I have the honor to tell you my darling, your husband now has a job!” For a second, it did not quite register, and when it did, she screamed! Dancing and singing at the same time, almost squeezing life out her husband in a tight hug, she gave praises.

Then she released his hands and asked, “What is the name of the company?” “What role?” “How much are they offering?” “When are you resuming?” “Is it here in Lagos?” The questions came all in a torrent. As soon as they did, it suddenly occurred to Akin that he really had no answer to her questions. He had not waited to hear out the caller. Considering that he had attended four different interviews last month alone, it was not easy to take a wild guess.

“Ehrrmmm… You see… I don’t actually know”

Titi paused and frowned. What did he mean? She had mentally concluded that for Akin to rejoice so greatly, it must be Curbana Industries. In fact, she had calculated how to disburse the money in her mind. The landlord was already breathing down their necks and just a few minutes ago, Iya Nneka had refused to borrow her Forty thousand naira to pay Junior’s school fees. The principal had every reason to get upset, who would not? A student owing fees for two consecutive sessions was definitely ‘bad market’. Now that her husband had a job, Devil receive your shame!

However, the increasing confusion on Akin’s face did not seem to align with her thoughts. The young man’s thoughts were racing. Which of the four firms had called? He dialed the number for the third time, “You are not allowed to call this number”.

Frustrated with the automated response ‘witch’, he flung the phone again and turned to his wife. “Ife let us hope they would call back. You see, I did not really hear the caller well, so I do not know which of the firms. Nonetheless, we bless God. The light at the end of the tunnel is shining through”.

Armed with her husband’s soothing words, Titi resumed her praise songs and dancing. Soon, their neighbors were trooping in to bid their congratulations to the couple. It was a miracle; her husband had gotten a job after 2 years of feeding from hand to mouth on next to nothing.

Later in the evening, Akin strolled into the cyber café; perhaps the company would send a mail.
Sure enough, there was a mail waiting for him in his mailbox titled:
Curbana Industries Limited – Congratulations
“Wow!” he screamed as soon as he saw the heading, simultaneously dialing Titi’s number and at the same time opening the mail.

“Iyawo mi, Curbana Industries ni o”
“Curbana! Eledumare Oba! When are you resuming?” Titi screamed.

However, her husband could no longer hear her even though he held the phone to his ear. Akin’s head drummed with pounding aches, drowning every other sound as he read the body of the mail:

Congratulations Akin Ademola. We are pleased to inform you that you were successful at the interview process stage 3. The process for the final interview stage would be mailed to you shortly.”

This is funny and very well written, but no surprises sha

Although I think Nigerians are not usually so loud. We like to keep personal things like this really close so that 'our enemies' don't jinx it for us.

Good one, Jazzmyne! As usual.

THE VISITOR

The children, ranging from three to ten years screamed and clapped their hands as the game of 'ten-ten' progressed.

They were split into two groups of four girls each. The game was intense and it required a lot of skill and expertise.

Rhoda stood close by, watching her elder sister clap her hands and make rhythmic leg movements. Of course she was a pro.

Other children hung around, waiting for the emergence of the winning group. The losers were going to be replaced with a set of new girls.

Rhoda raised her small head and saw a tall figure standing at the entrance of the one-storey building. He was looking her way and smiling. He didn't live in the house. He was a visitor. He was Mama Sam's guest.

He was a regular visitor. He comes and goes, every three to four days. He beckoned at her. She raised an eyebrow. Did he want to send her on an errand? She glanced at her elder sister and back at the man. He beckoned at her again and went in.

Maybe she could quickly run the errand and return to join the game. It was almost her turn.

She followed him. He went into Mama Sam's room and locked the door once she was in. He settled on the sofa and drew her to his side.

"I will buy you fanta and cabin biscuit," he brushed a hand over her face and slid his hand under her dress.

Her small eyes brightened in excitement. When was the last time she had such treat? She felt his fingers in her pant. Why was he touching her there?

"Do you like it?"

She stared back at him. Like what? What was he talking about?

"Come..." he lifted her up and carried her towards the bed.

Crushed under his weight, she felt his manliness trying to navigate its way into her tiny unripe bum-bum.

"Open the door!"

She recognized her mother's voice. Several fists attacked the door.

The man jumped down and raced to the door to open it.

Her mother, Mama Sam and others rushed in.

Rhoda's mother dashed to the bed. She checked her daughter. No blood. No semen. She heaved a sigh of relief.

"What were you doing with her?" Mama Sam confronted him. Pain glistened in her eyes.

"What were you doing with my daughter? " Rhoda's mum attacked him and everyone pounced on him.

Revenge

She came out of the one room self-contain apartment she once share with Didi;on one hand is a dagger laced with blood and the other is Didi's mutilated head. She let go of the head and it fell on the newly cemented floor with a thud. The people around exclaimed in horror as mothers cover their ward's face to prevent them from seeing the awful sight. She stare into the air and sneered. Words soon spread and soon, the compound was filled with people who speak in hush tunes.
The sound of siren soon fill the air and before one could say jack, the police were already at the scene. Four hefty policemen jumped out of their van;each holding a gun. The walked in slow motion, pointing their guns towards her.
"Kneel down and put your hands behind your head." One of the policemen commanded, almost shouting.
She obeyed without being told the second time. The policeman who spoke came forward and handcuffed her then lead her to the van.
An ambulance came few minutes later and a stretcher was wheeled to the apartment. Didi's body was brought out wrapped in a black body bag few minutes later. She smiled when she saw the body,at last! Tears stream down her cheeks when memories flashed back in her head.
She will never forget that night;the night Didi shattered her life. The night her parent were murdered right before her eyes before Didi took her innocence. She was just seventeen. She had vowed to avenge her parent and was glad she achieved her aim. Marrying her enemy for three years was worth it;her only regret was the four pregnancies she aborted.
She was taken to court two weeks and pleaded guilty to murder. She was sentenced to death by hanging. She smiled as she die.

I guess the now irate mother did not offer sex education to her daughter. Her daughter’s alarm bells would have gone off at point his fingers went into her pant if she was well tutored on the subject.

Rat Attack

I never liked being a rat, its been terrible. The humans hate you and always literally look down on you. They're always trying to kill you and to top it off, we're at the bottom of the food chain. I mean the very bottom.
I hate being a rat with everything in me, hate living from hand to mouth-literally and I hate the fact that I have to scavenge for food to survive and most of all, I hate being called a sewa rat. But the sewage is the most accommodating place for my clan. But still I had dreams, yes rats can dream too. I had a dream to discover the life of luxury and be looked upon as some sort of saviour who would deliver my clan from its pitiable existence, from scurrying about underground in filth, avoiding being seen by man and other predators when we hunted for food.

I was the only one who had this dream cause everyone seemed satisfied with the state of things. It was nature, it was the circle of life, we were meant to be constantly relegated to the bottom of the food chain and live in the lowest standard of the eco system.

But I had a dream. And so I set out, moving mostly at night, risking it during the day, taking underground shortcuts and bursting out from different plumbing systems.
I found many beautiful locations the kind i had never seen before but there was always a problem. Sometimes there was a cat, sometimes it was a dog sometimes the house was too cramped and not sufficient to contain the colony which numbered about 5 dozen mice. Not to talk of the expecting mothers. And other times I stumbled on a used satchet of 'rat killer' while I rummaged the trash for food. These humans were not friendly!

Finally by a sheer stroke of luck I happened to find my way up this particular plumbing. At first I was scared, the sheer volume of the house was astonishing and I spent hours moving round, so certain that a wild animal of some sort had to leave here. But then it dawned on me that no one was home.

I spent the night, dug a hole into the air conditioner vent and snuggled there just in case of company. The next morning, my good fortune dawned on me and out of excitement I nibbled everything in sight, which was mostly the wiring of the a/c I had spent the night.
I chose the particular room for our living quarters because there was something elegant about it.
There were pictures on the wall, humans I didn't know but they looked important and what really fascinated me was the table. There were papers neatly arranged and I knew my friends and I would have a swell time nibbling whatever we could get our hands on. There was a piece of clothe, it looked breathtaking although it was quite plain with just two colours: green and white.
I was excited and I took off, retracing my path down to the sewers. I couldn't wait tottell the colony about what I had found. At first they didn't believe me, I had always been the erratic one, the different one and maybe a little 'crazy' but my excitement was contagious coupled with my beautiful description which was exaggerated a bit.
It was decided. We would no longer be sewage rats. We would be high class rodents! We decided to migrate the next day.

°•°•°•
It was a tale of grass to grace. The comfort was priceless and we had drilled dozens of holes around the villa and whenever the women came to clean the place we remained out of sight. The minute they would leave, we would run out of our hiding places.
I loved the chair especially. The way the leather felt on my paws, a sweet sensation and I spent most days rolling on the chair, enjoying the leather scent and wondering the kind of human that sat on it and where he was.

We stayed in our new habitat for over 90 days and by that time we had believed we would stay there forever, we had destroyed wirings, eaten documents and nibbled on the curtains. This had to be rodent heaven.
But they say all good things must come to an end.

Sometime around the 100th day, the men arrived. They wore gloves and carried cannisters, they came in the dead of the night.
They sprayed some kind of chemical that threatened to choke us to death and one of them shouted when he saw one of my brothers run to his hole.

They were going to kill us. It seemed the owner of the house was returning. He had been away for so long and we had enjoyed his house but now we had to run away. It was very clear we would be killed if we didn't run away.
So the next night we moved in the dark. One after the other we dug our way down the plumbing and back to the sewage. We had tasted power for three months and it was sweet but now we needed to go back.

Our evenings are always full of tales and discussions as we reminisce on our short holiday in the unknown man's villa.

absoul:

Till this day we have no idea the ripple effects our actions caused.
One of these days we'd go up again.
