Lagos state government has announced commencement of computerized vehicle inspection service to determine the road-worthiness of vehicles in the state.

The new inspection service enables road users to know the status of their vehicles by going through series of tests.
Managing Director of Lagos State Computerized Vehicle Inspection Service (LACVIS), Segun Obayendo, noted that “We were unpopular when we started official operation in March 2017.”

“We encountered quite a lot of cynicism and skepticism as people had issues copping with the change in the price for inspection or wondered whether their vehicle will fail or pass.

“Inspections save lives of the drivers and other road users from accidents occasioned by mechanical failure and LACVIS computerized inspection process helps to detect mechanical faults before they become disaster on the highways.

“Our computerized inspection program ensures that vehicle owners are pro-actively contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment with an emission test. Vehicle emissions continue to be a major source of urban air pollution.

“However, the test checks the emission level of exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and others from a vehicle. If everyone chooses to be compliant, what we will have is improved air quality and other health and economic benefit.”

In his remarks, General Manager, LACVIS, Segun Ogunnaike, said “in the next three years, there will be at least 57 computerized inspection centers across the state.

“The idea is that before any vehicle is issued the road worthiness certificate, such vehicle will have to undergo inspection.”

Ahah these guys wont seize to amaze me, the Number one Air pollutant in Nigeria is Power Generators,there are more Generators running Idling that cars, for every car there is three Generators.You guys should fix the roads the cars would be healthier.How are you going to fail my car inspection for having a bad or warn out suspensions when in reality it was bad road that made it go bad
All cars will definitely fail the emission test cos our fuel is not up to standard unless They lower their emission standard which in terms renders the whole exercise worthless.!

You are right but the law since 1997 states that before a car is registered, it must be certified roadworthy. The era of certifying a car that you have never seen is over. That was corruption at the highest and so when the Vio were on the road, they were shocked to discover rickety vehicles with roadworthy certicates. I once witnessed an accident involving 3 cars, the last car to join the group was a G63 that rammed into the tiny light Camry. The 3 vehicles had no insurance, the Gwagon had no brakes. The owner of the tiny light had a fake insurance policy. This is what the new policy is meant to correct. Genuine insurance, good braking system and renewed confidence on the road. Tinted permit will be issued at the center and the police bcmr will be done at the center thereby creating an enhanced national security infrastructure which hitherto never existed.

With all the innovations and development in Lagos, i wont be surprised if they introduce 'visa requirement' to visit Lagos in the nearest future.....

Very good development. Even a one dead bulb prevents someone from registering his or her car in dubai until the test is passed.
Tires are checked
Bulbs: break light, trafficattors and headlamps
Emissions
Break pad etc all undergo checks of which any failure prevents registration.

bunch of fools, the roads are the big problem not the cars. and besides you can always pay to get the mot certificate, just like insurance and driving licence.

The emission level part got me. What of Dangote trucks and those DAF trucks all over Apapa, will those ones pass the emission level test too?

Hehe hehe, so funny, all the danfo, molue, Tipper, Trailer will be out of the road.

Are the roads worthy of the cars?

The norm of poor and rickey vehicles will always be there as long as the standard of living of the average nigerian is low. Even the people we call rich how many of them even buy brand new cars?

Its not workable in this country yet.Fix the bad roads first, otherwise, you will give police opportunity to hijack the process and collect bribe from innocent nigerians. DONT FORGET, many nigerians have driver license and yet they don't know how to drive.Many drive without license. Police hijacked the checking from Road safety, collect money from defaulters to enrich their pockets. Similar thing will happen.

Let's see how this hurdle will pan out?

At the end of the day this will be another point where people will be frustrated by agents of government who wants to line their pockets with bribes
