Please, i could use some career advice from great nairalanders. Please tag monikers that you think would be of great help, as i am at a crucial point in my career.

I am a graduate of chemcal engineering but for 2years now, have not gotten any engineering related job. The only job i got was at KPMG (audit), which i resigned after 3 months due to some personal reasons. I am currently an Area Sales Rep with a poultry feed production company that pays 183k per month (net take home after tax and other necessary deductions), though i could use up to 20 to 25k to fuel my car monthly.
Now, i just got a PTDF scholarship offer to study Advanced process integration and design in UK but not really sure if it is worth ditching my current job for it.

I am not very confident about securing a job once i finish msc because only a handful of opportunities come for chemical engineers. more also,UK rarely retains Nigerians.

Please what are your advices, especially from those who have done Msc in Uk.

I need your advices, i dont want to make a costly mistake.

Go straight away. Nothing to consider. If you are married save some money for your family use while you are away.

You better take a risk to explore. This is not even risk. It has been mitigated

Since it is a scholarship as you say, then go ahead and do the Msç.

When you are done, you can look at migrating to Oz or Can.

I know it's a cooked story but I'm gonna show concern. Now, if you had saved from the 183k you've been receiving monthly you'd have gotten enough money to invest in business that would be fetching you money. By now you'd have gone abroad to study. I rest my case

Better continue with the job, as msc from UK do not guaranty you a job in the UK, the Uk are only interested in your money once you are done they kick you out......even the children of our nigerian politheifians are not spared by the UK government, as they are sent back to nigeria immediately after schooling.......the truth is that the UK themselves are looking for jobs for their citizens, so they dont care about foreigners especially nigerians except you were born there or get married to a UK citizen or you have a degree in medical courses like medicine nursing or radiography were you only need licensing for to work. they only need your money once you gradute, you fvck off......as for nigeria, am sure you read the recent thread that made frontpage, about the guy that earns 35k, yet planning to get married, to burst ur bubble the guy has MSC yet he earns "peanuts"...............infact you are very lucky to earn 183k sum poeple with PhD are dangote drivers, sum are in N-power earning peanuts as salaries........so i advice you to save from what you earn and start a business or maybe start your MSC in nigeria which will cost less, please think well before you make decisions you may wish you never did................https://www.nairaland.com/4036175/30yrs-earn-35k-month-marry

I would suggest you go for further studies and immigrate to a country that's willing to accept skilled labour like Canada, the U.K is just good academic wise but there are no opportunities there unless you were born there, don't be afraid to try something new

If the admission was to Canada or US, I would say you should go immediately without thinking twice.

The thing with this admission to UK is that if you leave, it is almost certain that you are coming back after a year and six months as there is no visa you can use to delay your coming back while searching for a job in the UK. You must have a job with a company that can sponsor a tier 2 visa and is ready to sponsor you.

If you can get a study leave without pay, I would advice you do. Since it's a scholarship, there is no financial burden on you. The course would make you a better person and also Widen your horizon though it is not a guarantee for a better job in this present Nigeria.

If I was in your shoes, I would go for the masters. After the masters, think of going to canada or Australia with the express entry program. Don't look at the ptdf money as much, look for a part time job there and have savings. Write the ielts exams and try and get good grades towards the end of your stay in the UK. With that, I see you moving forward.

Go for the MSc, try to reason with your employer to know if it's possible for you to still join them after the program (UK Msc takes barely a year)....no one knows tomorrow, and sales rep job is something you can always get once you're back. I'm not very experienced, but I think PTDF is worth it bro.

i think this is also good, apply for study leave though not all coy approves that but if there is provision for such, make use of it and if the pasture is greener abroad, u will tender your resignation with ur employer
DMainMan:
It depends on u. Do u want to gain knowledge and have master's because u wanna be more employable. If u are afraid of job, den try to apply for US or Canada schools. When u finish, u can b given 2 years permit after your school. However, u will sign a bond with PTDF you will come back after your studies.

Well if I were in your shoe. I will go sha like I did during my time. The experience and finances you will gain from the scholarship outweighs it. You can also apply for study leave without pay in your current job. Well it all depends on your personality sha. Just try and make an informed decision because you are solely responsible for the outcome.

studying in the UK is very nice no doubt, but please I'll want you to think very well and deep about this decision, because first and foremost UK is very expensive, what are your chances of survival during and after your progam. And besides wouldn't it be very terrible for you to come back after your masters and join the job search trend. schooling in the UK is not as easy as it seems and at the end of the day you're not guaranteed a good job there.the UK government doesn't care about foreigners studying there, all theyre after is your money. please fam think well and smart before you consider quiting your job.if it's a country like Canada I know you're safe.after your programme you can easily get a good job and start your life over there unlike the UK.so just weigh your options and I think the only person that can really advice you well is God,talk to him if you're a believer. But if not trust your guts and have a backup plan(contingency)in case things go south.
sorry for the epistle

Better go for the UK programme and if you're able to get a side hussle whilst studying, you can save as much as you can to enable you apply for another course in either Canada or Australia soon as you're done in the uk. Those places are more friendly to you staying back after your course unlike the uk.

My Opinion.

It depends truly on what will give you satisfaction in the long run. To be a Chemical engineer for a company or an Entrepreneur later.

Life in UK, from the experiences shared by those over there is kind of expensive such that having enough to save and plan with will be almost insufficient.

Having in mind that the UK may most likely not retain you is really something I'd advise you think deeply on. The reason being that when you get back your employment niche will also be slim.

However, a possibility for a win-win situation will be for you to plan and save while working with your current employer for a few more years. That way you could advance yourself in any area of your choice, you'd have the liberty to apply for scholarships in other universities around the world & would still have a business of your own by then hopefully

It's a dicey situation though, but I hope you make the best decision at the end of the day.

Regards.

if this was for US or Canada i would say dont just take it but grab it and run for the masters

but because its UK ...i dont know about this. The UK is very harsh to international student and there is no work visa once you graduate so finding a job here in.the UK is almost impossible ..

i had several friends who grabbed the UK but a year later were back to naija looking for job after the masters

so UK hummmm it not an easy one to advice.

if you intend to study up to PHD then i can say yes take the masters and once you are in d UK apply for PHd in USA or Canada . with a good grades you are most likely to get full funding for PhD and then you move to USA or Canada that has more job prospect

If I were in your shoes, I'd go for the Mac scholarship without a second thought.

Just sacrifice a year or two and get the Msc. It stays with you for life and betters your career opportunities throughout your working lifetime.

You can always get another job, might not be so easy for another Msc opportunity.

Plus if you miss the Msc now, I doubt the possibility of getting one later when you take on bigger responsibilities (family, stricter work schedule, age etc).

Follow your heart though but go for the Msc if my advice is anything to go by.

does the scholarship involve monthly stipend and free accommodation? Will they allow you to work at least 4hours per day? If so try and save up during the duration of your program and after the completion of your studies usain bolt to Canada or Australia from Uk

Apply for study leave without pay if there is chance for that but don't I repeat don't ignore that master scholarship. If prefer to hold your job, you will definitely need that master in future to upgrade your self. Then issue of searching for job after master, don't think negative ever. God that provide this job in the first place is still there for u and as a matter fact with UK master you are hot cake.

Please and Please never miss the opportunity to study in UK especially when you have scholarship.
My Advice (from personal Experience)
1. Face your studies very well and come out with good result.
2. Before you go contact a reliable agent for immigration to Canada in case you come back and no Job,
with just 20 hours (Security job) it will not be difficult to pay Canada Agent.
3. Make sure you secure Shenghen visa before you go and travel to two / five countries in Europe.
4. If possible travel to Canada at least once.
5. Secure an International Drivers Licence before you go,
(Buy a small car may be 500 Pound, driving in UK is an asset when you are looking for job)
Once again do not miss the opportunity, it may never come again
Note: 183k is not money when you get married in few years time
I wish you the best.

When i read your headline, i was like 'take the job', but as i read you have won a scholarship - i'd advice you to take it and open up your horizons for free. The money you will get as stipend from PTDF will surely be more than the 183k that the poultry comapany will pay

Well, let me give you a real life example. My friend finished a Masters in the UK since 2014 and just recently got a job down south after according to him managing so many "insulting jobs". Even at that the bad policy of the UK mandating every student to leave their country upon graduation may not help matters. Hence my only advice is if you don't plan/ have enough cash to proceed on a PhD immediately after your programme, just Negodu. Look for where you can do anMsc here in Nigeria and enjoy your life.

Since,it is not personal funding,go for the msc.Though the opportunities after earning a masters in the U.K is slim, but you can improve your network, coupled with the international exposure studying in a diverse environment. And you can also apply for a study leave with your firm.Who knows.Keep moving.

I wish I could speak to you in person for some reasons. Having been in ur situation before and gone to the U.K. studied at MSc level , worked in a reputable firm and decided to come back to Nigeria, I think I understand how it works. First u have to consider your skills and ur deep passion. Only you can answer that. Also as a chemical engineer do u have just the qualification or are u excellent at it. Have you done your home work well on the skills needed for chemical engineers in western countries, do you have a back up plan should you go and come back and have to wait long before you get a job. Remember u are on ptdf scholarship and coming back is a must. I have friends who got the scholarship went and came back. It worked for some it backfired for others. All in all I have to follow ur instincts but have a plan for the worst. Again I wish I could speak to u in person. Think long term. Send me a private message if u can. fredykalu@yahoo.co.uk
