False information. My relative is paying heavily for his PGD there. He's a staunch member of the Church . He and his colleagues are even asked to pay extra 400,000 naira for the negligence and slowness of the authorities and some processes. I won't go further.PGD or PG...whatever.

@Statsocial, do you realise that the following Universities also have the same grant? These are:

1. University of Ibadan;

2. University of Jos; and

3. University of Lagos.

In fact, Covenant University got the lowest award. See the breakdown of the Award and the attached evidence from the NIH Website.

Covenant University-$250,000
Institute of Human Virology, Abuja-$1,798,716
UI- $2,247,127
UNIJOS-$640,000
UNILAG-$641,000

Everything about Covenant University is propaganda.

firstly, those universities already have more funding from the government.

secondly, they probably didn't publicize it because they didn't want people to ask questions.

thirdly, how old are those universities compared to CU

It depends on the grant you are talking about. Different research clusters have different grants. For my research cluster Bioinformatics, we have three major grants now, two from NIH and one from German Cancer Foundation. For WAVE (West African Virus Epidemiology on root and tuber,
they won the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grants). It just depends, So if you are going to give a statistic about Covenant University grants,
you have to combine all the research clusters and all the grants they have. It will also interest you to know that some individual lectures have grant. So, you still have to combine them too before you can give a statistic

Lol bros this has nothing do to with school fees. If anything it would ensure that PG students working in that cluster don't pay school fees. The PhD student is also going to be paid about 13,000 USD.

Also, CU runs free postgraduate for students who got first class from any any African university in STEM only by David Oyedepo Foundation. You would only need to pay for accommodation or get it somewhere else in Ota.Exactly a befitting birthday gift indeed. More to come in Jesus name.Africa of course. Many Grant agencies don't see sense in funding a research work for developing countries in universities in developed countries so they look for African Universities that has the combination of brilliant faculty, the right research environment, Corporate governance and all. We've also done our part by creating specialised laboratories in CUCRID like Molecular lab 1(college) 2 & 3(research center) and then endow research chairs in that cluster so since 2011 we've been getting funding.
I wasn't asking....The U.S is the biggest explorer of talents in other countries, as such, the have a major influence on any research the fund

I was expecting you to tell us how you arrived at the #1.5 billion NIH grant. Please, I am patiently waiting for you to give us the evidence that supports that. Your Link doesn't show that NIH awarded #1.5 billion to Covenant University. Rather, the incontrovertible evidence from NIH is that Covenant Uni got #250,000 which is the lowest they awarded to a Nigerian University.

When you provide the evidence from NIH that shows that #1.5 billion was awarded to Covenant University, I'll gladly continue the discussion. Let me remind you again; Nairalanders are not brainwashed CU Students. Here, we deal with Evidence, Facts and Logic.

@Statsocial,

If facts-induced comments are what you call "unnecessarily antagonistic" then so be it!

With respect, I think you don't understand the thrust of my argument. Let me help you.

1. You said Covenant University was awarded #1.5 billion by NIH, USA.
2. You said it in a way that suggests it's an unprecedented feat in Nigeria.

On the contrary, I have adduced evidence from NIH that lists the ongoing research awards to Universities in Nigeria. The evidence shows that Covenant University has the lowest Grant from NIH & that NIH only awarded $250, 000 to Covenant University, and not the #1.5 billion that you quoted.

You have now responded by showing recourse to Fogarty Website & Not NIH, the supposed awarding institution.

So what does Fogarty say?

1. $5 million awarded for 'bioinformatics training in Africa'. Note "Africa". NOT Covenant University.

2. The Bioinformatics Grant ($5 million) was awarded to several Students under different headings, viz:

*West Africa (WASLITBRL): Adebiyi (Nigeria, CU), Peter (Ghana) and Doumbia (Mali).

*East Africa (ICIPE): Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania.

The total Grant to ALL the Universities/Researchers is $5 million. So, I ask again, where and how did you arrive at your #1.5 billion figure I repeat, the total grant awarded by NIH to Covenant University is the LOWEST to any University in Nigeria. It is $250, 000. Please we are still waiting for you to give us any evidence at all FROM NIH that shows that #1.5 billion was awarded to Covenant University.

For the umpteenth time, propaganda cannot deceive nairalanders. What rules here is Evidence, Facts and Logic.

Lol see me see wahala o.
1) Why are you talking about things you obviously know nothing about?
Forgarty is a center dedicated to advance the purpose of NIH. So research funds granted by Forgarty is same as NIH.

2) "you said it like it is an unprecedented feat in Nigeria" - This statement stems from your paranoia. You think every information posted on social media is for us to brag and chest beat about our various institutions. In the post I made no mention of any other university other than CU, there was no comparison whatsoever.

3) Of course CU would propagate its research awards just like any other foreign university would. The likes of UI and UNN don't do so because precedence as shown that the FG cut funding in Health sector because of foreign NGO participation. So the FG universities don't talk much about grants received to prevent FG from citing them often.

4) You keep citing NIH record of grant awarded 3 years ago for a project already completed. The one of this thread was granted to days ago. It is frustrating that I have to repeat this several times over.

5) "Granted to Africa not CU" - lol is Africa a university? I don't even know what to say to this your argument. It is like saying the Grant was given to North America rather than Harvard.

6) You are citing Adebiyi as a student, this is why I am asking you to stop talking about things you don't know.

7) The point of the post is that CU, amongst a consortium of Universities was awarded $5M(1.7 billion naira) for bioinformatics research. Which was well stated in the post. The tweet Screenshot also indicated that Makerere, ISi Kenya and Bamako are in the consortium. The unilag and Ui project are also in consortium of about nothing less than 30 institutions.

cool Do not get offended o. We know Nigerian universities are known to be "teaching shops" or "degree mills" but we are different and we are keen on telling the Covenant story.

You ought to ask how the project would impact the Nigerian society rather than making unnecessary arguments. NIH is just one of the many sources where CU gets foreign funds from so don't make it look like its a ranking of some sort. We have an established WAVE project in collaboration with IITA and funded by Gates foundation. What about UNESCO funded Software development and Reverse Engineering by Prof Sanjay Misra(600,000USD) or The physics cluster headed by Dilip Kumar De. Or the CU project with IBM, the research collaboration with Lancaster,Tshwanne, Cranfield, University of Wisconsin.

I am presently not in covenant university but I just did some research online and my findings show that covenant university is bound to have the highest grant in bioformatics in Nigeria. A covenant lecturer is the head of bioformatics in nigeria, and a notabke name in bioformatics in africa. This research is on bioformatics alone, no federal school have got this much in this area in recent times.

@Statsocial,

This is why I like hardcore facts. Nothing beats facts! No matter how you tweak it, a Fact is a Fact.

Despite your braggado, you have failed to produce any evidence FROM NIH to show that they awarded 1.5 Billion Naira to Covenant University. Remember, your headline says: "NIH, USA GRANTS Covenant University 1.5 billion naira". That headline and the supporting information has now turned out to be misleading. In fact, you have impliedly admitted that the 1.5 billion was not granted to Covenant University.

But in order not to appear defeated, you have precariously stated that it was granted to a 'consortium'. You have also cited the 'numerous' other grants that CU allegedly got from other bodies-which are not relevant to this thread.

This discussion is about NIH. From NIH's website (which you have not challenged), Covenant University has the lowest grant from NIH. UI, UNILAG, UNIJOS etc directly (not consortium*) and separately got far more than Covenant University. The total grant from NIH to Covenant University is $250,000. Period.

See, my brother, I just want you to learn a lesson from this your public gaffe. Nairaland is not OTA where all your propaganda will easily be believed by unsuspecting students. There are Professors, Doctors and other professionals on NL. You can't just post anything! Besides, you need to stop writing/arguing emotionally. Always focus on Evidence, Facts and Logic. May God be with you.

Cheers.

Pedagogue:
@Statsocial,

Cheers.

Excerpt from the post
"The National Institute of Health, USA as granted Covenant University, University of Bamako and Makarere University additional $5 million to continue the H3ABionet research work and graduate training"

"Currently the H3ABionet is being run by Covenant and other top notch universities across the globe from South Africa, USA, Norway e.t.c in collaboration. Proceeds or publications from the consortium is usually published on Nature journals."

So what part of this is confusing you Sir?

It was clearly stated in the post that it is a consortium. Everybody saw it because everybody except you read it. If it was CU and another Nigerian institution i would have endeavoured to mention it in the title. When it comes to foreign grants from organizations like NIH it is usually given to consortiums. Don't let anyone deceive you, the money granted to UI, Unilag are for a consortium of many Universities. If you want I can post you links to the proceedings online. Usually the coordinating Research institution applies for the grant and gets other institutions in on it but it remains an inter university and multidisciplinary research.

Even research funded by CU herself is done in collaboration with other Universities. CU is a centre of excellence in Bioinformatics and would most likely lead this consortium like it as done before.

Do not pay attention to pedagogue. He is pained that a 15 year old university of a church he severely loathes is making more progress. If it s about Bioinformatics believe you me CU is on top in this Africa.

THanks for the infomation. Some people are just pained because a Christian private university is taking the lead. Dont mind them. Let them go and start their own private university and see how sweet it is to run.

Ya, i worked with a Bioinformatics Msc student on his project it was about programming to get a ordered structure of metabolic reactions in Plasmodium falciparum pathway system for finding important genes to knock out.
I met Prof Adebiyi when he came back from Germany and Dr Oyelade he was the coordinator of the programming lesson held for undergraduate during the holiday and i was one of the tutors so was Mrs Isewon.
So i've had couple relations with CU bioinformatics and i know it great.

But CU messed me up with that stupid "easter youth alive" nonsense and Azubuike don comot so nobody get my time.

wow NUC needs to make it clear to CU that it cannot continue to punish students for not attending religious events. Where you suspended? Or prevented from writing an exam for not attending Youth Alive?
