Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa and Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos have been rated among the worst 20 airports.

This is outcome of a survey by renowned aviation organization, Sleep in Airport (sleepinairports.net).

The website ranked Lagos the fifth worst airport in the world, while Port Harcourt was ranked the third worst airport globally.

The criteria used included comfort (gate seating and availability of rest zones), services, facilities and things to do, food options, immigration/security, customer service, cleanliness, navigation and ease of transit and sleepability.

The website explained that the airports that appeared on the list of worst airports in the world are those that have the capacity to truly offend travellers.

“Within these terminals, there appears to be a general disinterest in a positive traveller experience. In some cases, passengers are made to stand or sit on the floor as they await their flights. In others, the bathrooms don’t have water, toilet paper, or any semblance of cleanliness,” it said.

“In some cases, the physical structure of the airport is fine, but the personnel are the problem. Got a problem? Don’t expect much in terms of customer service at these airports.

“If you find yourself travelling through one of these 20 terminals, brace yourself. You’ll want to give yourself just enough time to get in and get out. A minute more and you’ll be unhappy and uncomfortable – a minute less, and you risk missing your flight”, it added.

In order of ranking, the worst five airports in the world comprised Juba International Airport, South Sudan (JUB), Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport, Saudi Arabia (JED), Port Harcourt International Airport, Nigeria (PHC), Crete Heraklion International Airport, Greece (HER) and Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria (LOS).

Others are Santorini Thira National Airport, Greece (JTR), Dar es Salaam Julius Nyerere International Airport, Tanzania (DAR), Rhodes International Airport, Greece (RHO), Paris Beauvais-Tille Airport, France (BVA), Tashkent International Airport, Uzbekistan (TAS) and London Luton International Airport, England (LTN).

Others on the list were Rome Ciampino International Airport, Italy (CIA), Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal (KTM), New York City LaGuardia, USA (LGA), Chania International Airport, Greece (CHQ), Caracas Simón Bolívar International Airport, Venezuela (CCS), Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, China (CAN), Cluj International Airport, Romania (CLJ), Islamabad Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Pakistan (ISB), and Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Ethiopia (ADD).

On Port Harcourt airport, the website said for this year’s survey, respondents indicated that aggressive corruption was the biggest problem, with airport officials and staff allegedly demanding bribes for pretty much everything.

Other complaints included lack of bathroom facilities, lack of air conditioning, horrible baggage handling, and the tent that serves as the arrival terminal.

Port Harcourt airport last year was ranked the worst airport in the world by the same website.

On Lagos airport, the website said for many voters, there appears to be no discernible difference in the operations and facilities of the Lagos International Airport, but travellers also complained of massive corruption at the airport.

Others were filthy bathrooms, limited seating, archaic check-in procedures, sporadic air conditioning, and lousy customer service.

That is a big fat lie! Telecoms is an example of well executed privatization transition. The country simply lacks the resources to properly operate and manage these airport facilities efficiently. The key thing is to hand it over to competent private managers. Nepa wasn't handed to competent people that is why that sector is still under performing. Sectors like these should only be regulated by government, not managed by it.

A few days ago, Nigeria Police was rated the worst in Africa. And now, two of the ''best'' airports in Nigeria are now rated amongst the 5 worst in the world.
And still, some fools have given their brain and IQ away, following the senseless bandwagon that ''Nigeria is the giant of Africa; Nigerians are happiest people in the world. etc''. The people must really be mad to be 'happiest'' in this shit of a nation

Do we have any international airport in Nigeria?
The answer is no.What we have is an upgraded local airport.
I haven't travel out of this country but the pictures of some international airports or even local airports in some of these countries outside will wow you.
Enugu airport was supposed to be upgraded to an international hub instead what we got was a flood port and runway that some of roads is 100 times better of.
Port harcourt airport is the worst. Even our common sense Senator shouted and tweeted that Sudan airport is better than it.
Lagos airport is manageable but how can an international airport of that calibre not have a cctv and other facilities. That why we have beggars in uniform in the name of Customs and Immigration agents disgracing themselves begging everybody coming in there for tips as if government no dy pay them salaries!
Abuja airport is a bit OK after all our politicians normally fly through there and they will shamelessly try everything possible to make the airport manageable to suit them.
All other airports are just there for formality sake with some already converted to cattle ranch for Fulani herdsmen.
When do we ever get things right in this country? Even some local airports in Uk and United states are far more better than the international airports we have here.

May all the leaders, politicians ,contractors and anybody responsible for putting us in this mess never know peace all through their life. Oil that is blessings to other nation is curse to us.
Dubai, Algeria, Qatar etc created paradises with their oil proceeds but This shithole called Nigeria created hells for it's citizens with few individuals pocketed the proceeds from the oil such that their 30th generations can't lack in their life times

Crude oil gives us "a false sense of hope" and what any sensible leader should naturally do is to impose a moratorium on crude oil exploration in the country until such a time when we have been able to harness our innate human resources.

Norway as a nation, has all her oil wealth ... almost a TRILLION DOLLARS WORTH kept in a sovereign wealth fund and that has allowed them to look beyond oil, knowing fully well that such can't last forever

Notice the airports competing with Nigerian airports are not even what one would refer to as "gateway airport" but alternative airport.that is how low standard we have become

Actually PH airport is better and neater, but the nauseating thing about it is that the part where you're meant to pick up your luggage which was supposed to be built hasn't been built in about 5 years, so they make use of a make shift structure in a building that is archaic.
