My good advice to you. pls if you are believer( Born again) ask God for which course to choose. But, I will advice you to choose food science. it has a lot of prospect and in qualification, Food science is a professional course( 5years) in the university compare to zoology ( 4years).

Food Science has more advantage compare to Zoology. In life, you cannot do without food and drinks. Chance abound with lots of FMCGs such as rite foods, Guinness, NBC, NB, Unilever, PZ, Arla these are just a few companies who are into food. But here in Nigeria, its only few individuals that value animal. So my dear I will advice you go for Food Science

Thanks
Thanking him for telling you what you wanted to hear? I am a zoologist and have been working as a federal employee for nearly a decade. Let me quickly add that the basis for absorbing me into the Federal Civil Service is beacuse I read zoology. The reason why many see nothing wrong in courses like zoology is beacuse they never want to pursue higher degrees in the field. Like any other course nowadays (medicine inclusive), a first degree cannot give you a competitive advantage in the labour market, so you've got to specialise and be known as a specialist in the field.

I can only advise you to be the best and aim for the best in whichever course you eventually settle for. I can confidently inform you that neither of the two courses promises you a future without God or good luck, and both of them can give you a promising future with God or good luck. Haven't you seen jobless medical doctors, pharmacists, engineers and lawyers in Nigeria? Every field is becoming oversaturated in Nigeria, thanks to our overpopulation which the government is even encouraging. Unless something is done to this overpopulation problem in Nigeria, future graduates in any discipline can only get much more frustrated than the past and current.

This country also needs to make concrete pension arrangements for workers and cut the retirement age for both civil servants and private employees. Why should someone retire at the age of 70/65 or 60, in a country with tens of millions of unemployed youths. In a university for instance, a professor retires at 70 when he will be obviously less productive and would have lost touch with the trending developments in his field. Meanwhile, his salary could pay the salaries of about 3 0r 4 young PhD holders who are still very fresh and yearning for innovative research. Why can't professors and university workers retire at 60 while other civil servants retire at about 50 or 55 so as to create opportunities for younger ones. Why should anyone want to die in service if s/he is guaranteed adeqaute and assured pension plan?

Today I thank God I chose food science. By his grace I'm leaving the country to abroad for master's program with full scholarship. All over the world FST has reputation. Government of Belgium & Vietnam are covering for my expenses abroad without paying kobo. So the ball is in your court play it wisely.

I tell you.

I wonder. If you combine together all the money spent for so called education, (which is actually cramming and memorizing the ideas of the whitemen) with the costs of transportation rent food, and so on, you have enough money to start your own business and be a multi millionaire in 2 - 5 years. If you can read and write, there is nothing you cant learn yourself on the internet.

Big university only makes sense if you want to be a doctor or do research. Asides, it is a waste of time and money.

I hope you have not misled the OP into thinking that Food Science is a better course, and that Zoology is utterly hopeless. On your assertion that Zoology is an irrelevant course, I put it to you that you are absolutely wrong. Go and check out nations with robust economies and developments, they are the ones with great natural and physical scientists.
You should hear yourself out. He will fare better in a nation with robust economy and development, but this is Nigeria. You don't want to be roaming the streets of Lagos with a First class in Yoruba language for example and get much prospects

Hey Nairalanders,

I'm currently in a state of confusion now and i thought i could reach out to the knowledgeable ones on this forum who can help clear my mind.

On applying for admission last year i was given zoology to study, but i didn't like the course. Although i went ahead to take the opportunity, i tried for another admission this year into pharmacy. But my course was changed again on getting admitted and i was given food science instead.

I initially wanted to just go ahead with the one I'm doing already (zoology), but i met some people who informed me that food science is better. Now I'm confused on which one to pick.

Please I'd like any professionals in the above fields to enlighten me more on them including the prospects and which is better in our economic climate. I tried researching on both but i didn't come up with much. I hope i can find answers here.

I don't know the mods in charge but I'd like if this topic can be pushed forward for more coverage.

Study the course you have a passion for. That is what will keep you going...... especially much later.
Engineers, lawyers and DOCTORS are looking for work. BBC just recruited some BEd Igbo graduates......that's life for you. Do your bit and be hopeful.

That's on the assumption that he plans to live outside Nigeria.

None.

Choose anyone and then try and make the best out of it.

If everyone starts rushing to the more prospects courses... competition will eventually make nonsense of your hitherto 'more prosperous' course of study.

We need to diversify.

It's as simple as that.

I am not looking down on any profession. Someone once asked: "Why waste so much years in school learning something that has 5% chance of happening?"

But my own point is simple. Even if you do not end up practising what you have studied at uni, the skills, rigour and research you put into acquiring your degree, will always come in useful as an applied skill, in any other field you choose to go into. So university education is not overrated. sad

I once mentioned Ibukun Awosika in another thread, who is the Chairman of First Bank. She actually studied Chemistry in university, as well as an MBA. I doubt if she has ever used her degree to get a job. But the skills she picked up at school, were applied in the business world, and today she is one of the highly-rated business women in the country. wink

Finally, you mentioned zoology. It may interest you to know that there are over 27 different branches of zoology from Aquaculture, Oceanography, Virology, Zoopathology, Entomology, Parasitology, Malacology, Wildlife Biology to Environmental Management and Toxicology etc. You can always specialise in any field.

The sad thing is that people have such a poor perspective of such courses, because they do not even bother to find out what they can do with it. undecided And each year, our private sector firms end up contracting jobs in such areas to foreigners, because our own people can't be bothered to undergo specialisation in these fields.

I know graduates of Zoology who specialised in Environmental Management, Toxicology and Pollution Control at Masters level, and are now working in oil and gas companies, and putting their knowledge and skills to good use. cheesy

If you specialise in Aquaculture & Fisheries, while studying Zoology, you can easily open a fish farm and run it successfully with the knowledge you have gained.

Are you aware that there is a branch of Zoology called Food Toxicology?? Unfortunately, I dont think this PG course is offered in Nigeria, but it is available in foreign universities. Specialists in this field, work in food and beverage companies, or multinationals that operate in the life sciences sector.

Zoologists also research new vermin control drugs or veterinary medicines for pharmaceutical companies.

Funny how people comment on what they have little knowledge about. Zoology as a course has over 30 areas that you can specialize in such as virology, aquaculture, genetics, toxicology, parasitology, anatomy, physiology, environmental biology etc. I am a zoology graduate from University of Ibadan, I am gainfully employed in a bank to the glory of God without knowing anyone. I did the same tests and interviews with Economics, banking and finance, accountancy etc graduates. A friend of mine did zoology at B.Sc and Food tech at MSc, now he has his own eatery operating in Lagos and Ibadan. I have friends currently outside of the country who won various scholarships and even one in chevron. So what are we talking about. The truth of the matter is that no matter what you study, endeavour to make a very good result. As it is not the course studied that get you interviews but your grades and what you are made of. Also try and study a course that you have passion for and always pray to God for favours.

studying zoology does not necessarily mean you have to work in a zoo. i don't know about food science, but zoology has enough prospects if you are serious with it. i studied zoology and i'm not regretting a bit i did. In my final year, i weighed my options and specialized in toxicology and fisheries, this dealt with the effect of heavy metals in the tissue of fish. Today i have used my knowledge to help some fish farms and currently work in an oil and gas firm, sometimes it doesn't take the course you study to make it or make an impact, it takes determination. go online for more details on both courses

O.p,
i'd advise you to go for your passion. it's very important. but if you've made up your mind to choose among the two courses then Food science and technology is an obvious choice.

Food science and technology is the most underated course in Nigeria. It's prospects and opportunities are obvious especially in a country where food and hospitality industry is thriving the most.
