Let me make it simple, Benin republic is a country which took that name in 1970 in order to honour the ancient Benin Kingdom.

Benin Republic dropped the 'Dahomey' tag because the Kingdom didn't truly rep the major stakeholders of the newly formed Republic.

They agreed with the new tag, named after the Bight of Benin ....not necessarily to 'honour' the ancient Benin Kingdom.
