Main One Cable Company Limited, the first submarine cable company offering open access and wholesale broadband capacity in West Africa, has been completed and commissioned, officials of the firm said yesterday.
The facility offers 1,920 gigabytes per second (Gbps) data capacity and is 7, 000 kilometres long. With landing stations in Nigeria and Ghana, and branching units in Morocco, Canary Islands, Senegal and Ivory Coast, the cable will deliver unprecedented broadband capacity to West Africa; more than ten times what is currently available.

With its cable system now turned on, the company is strategically positioned to champion the communications revolution in Africa, impacting businesses, governments, and individuals by providing higher bandwidth and exceptional speeds at a lower cost.

Though Nigeria's internet penetration is still at its lowest ebb, the much anticipated landing of Main One submarine cable this month would indeed crash the cost of internet access, bringing about the desirable digital revolution that the country has been yearning for, industry watchers say. They further expound that the considerable increase in available bandwidth from the Main One cable will provide telecommunications industry with the additional

capacity they require to expand networks and mobilize a broader range of services. The ramifications of the cable will be felt in all sectors; from education, to health, and entertainment, helping to drive economic growth and creating employment opportunities on the African continent.

Fola Adeola, chairman, Main One Cable Company stated: "Today is a historic day for West Africa. The arrival of the Main One cable proves that much good can be done by Africans for Africans. We are pleased to realise the fruit of our dedication and commitment in the past30 months.

"More importantly, we are happy to be a channel for driving growth in Africa, and changing the status quo for the average African as reliable internet connectivity becomes easily accessible and affordable for all", he concluded. Main One is wholly African and is the first privately owned submarine network cable in West Africa. A landmark achievement, Main One delivered its cable system on time and within budget, a rare occurrence with projects of this magnitude and complexity.

Industry watchers say that the system would also contribute to an immediate 50 percent drop in the price of bandwidth in Nigeria and Ghana, and continued price reduction was anticipated over time. BusinessDay gathered that GSM operator, MTN Nigeria, is the largest single user of bandwidth in the country. As at today, the company's bandwidth demand is put at 2 Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM).

This is a good step. Maybe people who are in Lagos or in other places can later tell us about the effect this is having. Have any of the phone companies signed on to use the cable?

Since it just came on line today if they have not signed up,they should be doing so shortly. . .

The most important thing about this news is that it will crash the cost of internet connections
and improve speeds and bandwidth. . .

Excellent! I've always said that the private sector would solve all of nigeria's problems. Government should just focus on regulatory oversight and leave the rest 2 the OPS. MAIN ONE has done great with this.

Whats up with Glo One? I tot they landed last year. How come  they havent started? Anyways, they've got competition now.

And what on planet earth is Scanning Probe Microscopy?

Yea u got that right. . If the OPS is encouraged they can do wonders for Nigeria

I think GLO 1s Landing last yr was a publicity stunt as they still had some work to do. . .
but i think its either up and running skeletal services or is about to

Also AN MTN led consortium(WACS) is building a submarine cable from South Africa to Nigeria. .

as for Scanning Probe Microscopy. . beats me. . cool
Re: Main One Cable Goes Live In Lagos by trueword: 4:19am On Jul 02, 2010
I am really hoping that this will lead to the broadband revolution in Nigeria. Hopefully high speed internet will soon be available all over nigeria. I am happy that Main One said that they would be done by this time and were actually being able to stay on schedule. It shows how serious they took this project. Hopefully this will even help to bring and start up more television networks to Nigeria.

I think the one that glo is building is only for their network. So I don't think they will want to sign on to this cable.
Re: Main One Cable Goes Live In Lagos by CyberG: 6:49am On Jul 02, 2010
Definitely, Scanning Probe Microscopy has NOTHING to do with bandwidth. I know enough about SPM and bandwidth measurement has no relationship to it whatsoever!

@ Post. . .hope this translates to practical benefits to Nigerians and not some story sooner than later ooo. You know in Naija, you just can't be sure of anything!

EXACTLY! Nigerians are too focused on pointless 'grammer' and noise-making instead of delivering PRACTICAL results. As a glo user, I've been salivating at the prospect of super fast and super cheap internet ever since the so-called Glo-1 marine cable landed last year, but up till now nothing has happened! What makes us so sure that this Main One cable would 'hit the ground running' immediately? As for me, I'm disgusted by all such HYPE. Let us start using it and enjoy the practical benefits immediately rather than all this corporate grammer.
[thats why I prefer oyinbo companies, they announce ONLY when they are ready, not this naija/african style of making empty promises years beforehand]

The best part of this news is that it's privately operated.
Can you imagine it in the hands of the government? It would have been x10 more expensive and x100 less efficient.
Re: Main One Cable Goes Live In Lagos by RTFM(m): 11:55am On Jul 02, 2010
I belive the author of the article meant 2 STM s which is equivalent to 155.520 Mbit/s x 2

publicity stunt? this will also be described as a stunt as well because tehy will have to set things up now

Glo landed last year and this same experts said the price will crash within months.   .    .   .

Good thing all the same

For getting the Project finished on target, big ups for the Company.
As far as they wont dirty their hands in Niaja Polities, I guess they will deliver goodness to Naija Cyberspace.

But if the guys in charge of NEPA & Diseal distribution succeed in filtrating them, then the story begins.

But at least for arriving on time, they deserve our kudos.

I hope our smart reporter has not goofed in his usage of SPM here o!
Check this out  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scanning_probe_microscopy

Anyways, Big ups to Fola and his team, once the cable is terminated here, finishing the local ends will be a smaller task.

Now its going to be a race between them and GLO on who's going to roll out first! On your marks. . .

Good news but the story might change very soon. Hackers will soon interupt this service cos a large percentage of Nigerians don't spend a kobo on internet services especially the users of MTN and etisalat.
Re: Main One Cable Goes Live In Lagos by texazzpete(m): 12:59pm On Jul 02, 2010
Those thieving dogs at MTN will never drop prices unless they're compelled to do so by the government.

u misunderstand how the cable works. . They will not be selling bandwidth directly to the final users

but will sell it wholesale to IT companies who will now sell to final consumers

What's political about this post?

Meanwhile, I wonder how $1m per STM is going to drop bandwidth pricing. grin

Its funny u reside in the USA see how things work, but advocate the worst policies for Nigeria

GOVT mandates do not provide better services. . .

The thing that will drop prices is more competition. . .

The MAIN ONE cable provider will not only sell bandwidth to MTN,but to all other Communication companys in Nigeria, like GLO,ETISALAT,ZAIN and so on

I am guessing that if MTN jacks up its prices, the rest will lower them to steal customers from MTN
Please watch the video i posted above

Its funny that u want a GOVT that failed woefully in NITEL to now dictate to Private companies how much they should charge for their service
Its like u dont see how badly that policy is stunting the growth of Private sector providers of electricity in Nigeria

This is not going to crash any price, the problem we have with internet access is distribution and none peering of the existing providers. Our distribution system is based on wireless system, frequency spectrum is not cheap and not readily available, until we have a wired system, broadband internet access might be a mirage

^^Spot on! The problem is with the last mile distribution to the end users. We have done quite a commendable job to get trunk links to the internet highway, but we do not have any metro cable networks of any sort for this data to ride to the customers. Everyone needs some of wireless device at their premises. On the provider side, they need to roll out a network of wireless access points, another capital expenditure. All of these cost is spread over time on the bandwidth charge and passed to the customers!

So in earnest, the only people that can deliver any savings are a network like MTN who already have 3.5G network infrastructure on which their data can ride as well. Therefore, any savings on the trunk links to the internet can be passed on - but knowing the south african company, do not hold your breath just yet!

Globacom has huge wire network for their data and landlines. . They can get DSL through those lines

Same with MTN. . . .I dont know about ETisalat. . .but u cant blame the people bringing in the cable
The necessary Infrastructure will be built and rolled out to support this as demand is there
