Happens to me sometimes too. I think to avoid this, you should be more focused on what you are praying for.

Are you close to God?


Try and have a personal relationship with God.


If you know who you are praying to,

You won't allow distractions.

The mind loves to wander, especially when it's faced with a task it naturally has no interest in. Like a wild goat, it walks into green pastures, constantly roaming around, never willing to settle.


This is the normal state of mind. During prayers, you probably notice it more because you have an interest to be calm, to smooth the stormy tides of the mind so you can hear that still small voice within.

If you find your mind keeps wandering prayer, let it. Make no effort to hold it. Place your focus on your prayers. Keep praying. Pay your mind no heed and it will walk back to you.

If your mind wanders during prayer it may be because you have said everything you want to say to God at the time. Instead of repeating yourself unnecessarily, why not just end the prayer session at that point and find something more interesting to do with your time?

If your mind wander while praying then praying wasn't really on your mind, you probably wanted to fulfill routine. Because prayer demand absolute concentration else you are wasting your time.
But to stop it, then ensure your mind is on God's word before prayer starts that way you can focus your thoughts right.
