The only thing that is backward is you speaking English when you have your own language and not under colonization. You can always have a Yoruba interpreter with you at the meeting to explain what is going on. Or you can go back to your state, it's simple. We can only dream in our language like someone said.
texazzpete:
What a backward and retrogressive law.
If you want to 'preserve the Yoruba language', why not restrict this only to Yoruba people? Why is this not optional?

This is hostile to others, and disregards the fact that we have a national language in English to eliminate issues such as this. Essentially, this law makes it legal to go to a meeting in the Civil service and have the entire meeting conducted in yoruba language, to the exclusion of any present non-yoruba speaker.

Heck, you can even no use this law to hold lectures in LASU in 100% Yoruba.

Imagine if every tribe copies this and you then need to have a credit in Igbo language to even apply to Imsu angry

Disgraceful that there are some people here supporting this shite.

Yoruba can only enact such a law wen they form a country. As long as they are still within Nigeria, this law is very dead long before it will arrive. During the next admissions, No one will even talk about this and besides we all know Lagos is not yoruba land.
Wrong! When Anambra enacted similar laws making the teaching and studying of Igbo compulsory in state-owned primary and secondary schools, how many tribes complained? In fact, any student who failed to pass Igbo was denied promotion to the next class.

Why are you now wailing just because Lagos has done something similar, and widened the scope to include its state-owned tertiary institutions? A credit pass in Yoruba language at SSCE level or NECO, is simply needed to gain admission into the institution. The language will not be used as a method of instruction within those tertiary institutions, so why this stress?

this go beyond education my guy, we are too fast to compare our disorganised governmental system to a stable government of other countries

goto East, even in the bank the igbos ain't ashamed to speak Igbo language but Yoruba here, in a corporate organization, you will hardly know the employee are yorubas

how do we restore our language value if not through schools? the governor unanimously with the lawmakers had passed the law and there is ntn anyone can do to reverse that, so this debate has no meaning to me

And that is what I said - that I support this measure very strongly at basic education level through primary and secondary school. That is the place for acquiring language skills. At tertiary level, except one is studying a language itself or except one day, we start teaching courses in our indigenous languages, it's a waste of a student's time making him take language courses.

You're comparing the East to Lagos, which isn't a fair comparison. I'm sure in Ekiti or Ondo, Yoruba is the dominant language as Igbo is in Ebonyi or Abia. Lagos is a cosmopolitan city which might be Yoruba dominated, but has a national character and flair. It's interesting that no other state, including the other 5 Yoruba states, ever felt the need to pass this measure, but the Lagos State House did. It seems it is motivated more out of hubris and arrogance and a need to feel relevant than trying to somehow promote the language. Be honest, can you imagine there being some kind of scheme in Abuja where admission or even employment into government institutions requires working knowledge of the Gwari language?

You go to Quebec and insist on conducting business in English Language just because not all of Canada speak French and we’ll see how far that takes you! The right to self-determination includes the right to preserve your cultural and linguistic identity. Lagos having become a State where all are welcome to aspire it is imperative to ensure that the Yoruba culture and language are well preserved. That is only fair!

French is the official language of the enclave of Quebec. the vast majority of residents in Quebec are french speaking.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Language_Act_(Quebec)

your analogy is not apt, as English remains the official language in ALL territories in Nigeria.

Those countries are mostly ethnically homogeneous, and have their languages as the national language. Nigeria is a multi-ethnic unitary state with an official language which happens to be a colonial one.
In any case, that isn't even the important thing. No one has stopped you developing a Yoruba curriculum. If they were teaching Engineering in Yoruba in LASU, no one who doesn't speak or write Yoruba would bother applying. That's a different thing from going to study a professional course with English as the language of instruction, then having to waste your time with irrelevant courses that adds nothing to your profession. It is understandable in basic education (primary and secondary), but not educating a bunch of adults that came to the university to train themselves as professionals.

We have a federal ministry for education, their laws on this case surperceeds whatever the land grabbing Yoruba tribe enacts in their state assembly.
The same federal ministry of education did not stop Anambra state for making the studying and teaching of Igbo language compulsory in its state-owned schools. So why should it stop Lagos for doing the same, and asking that students who wish to attend Lagos state-owned tertiary institutions should do the same?

1. Let me correct this impression. This law is highly unlikely to affect me personally. My university days are long over (and certainly I'd have never gone to any of the provincial tertiary schools in Lagos). I also have limited exposure to Govt agencies. I am merely speaking out against what I perceive to be a misguided law.

Is Lagos and by extension, YORUBALAND, not ethnically homogeneous enough for you? By enacting this law, Is the Lagos state government doing anything illegal under the Nigerian constitution?

Lagos is not ethnically homogeneous. It is dominated by an indigenous ethnic group. But, it isn't ethnically homogeneous. If I were to make the kindest, most generous estimate, I'd say at best, Yorubas are about 65% of the Lagos population. But I'd wager they're less than that.
And no one said what the LASG are doing is "illegal". Legality isn't synonymous with rightness.
