Thanks boss, I really appreciate.

Quoran:
Congrats bro.For the Skype interview, check the Professor's recent research papers and his lab's website. He won't ask anything extremely technical. Just check out methods and research tools he has used to conduct research. He will mostly likely be asking you questions to see if you are a conversant with all you will need to work with him. You should be fine. Cheers.

Although am optimistic, but am also looking at a worst case scenario. What are the pros and cons for getting a loan to study in a school like Stanford. The school has a loan package for international students. What's your view on this?

They just wanted to know my research interests and experience. They basically went through my CV and they asked questions on it. They also want to know your future plans, what you aim to achieve from your research. If it is a studentship, the questions will be more specific as it relates to the specific project. Nothing deep as such, just to make sure you're an ideal candidate. The aim of most of these interviews is to find if you're a good fit for their research group/lab/work. I hope this helps you. All the best.

thanks bro

I got admission offer from Stevens Institute of Technology, Cleveland State University, Auburn University and Stanford University. No funding available yet from the aforementioned schools. I am still expecting decision from TAMU Coll Station,UC boulder and UT Austin.

Are you saying its worth for Stanford University?

You could consider UT Austin if you get funded, and is it a Ph.D. program, sir?

I have not heard from TAMU despite seeing a couple of admission decisions on gradcafe. I submitted my application before the December 20th deadline.

Depends on how you think you would hear from them. TAMU will not alert you via an email. You would have to log back into that portal for uploading documents to check their decision. It is usually uploaded there.

Sure, it depends on my goals, I don't think am ready for the 5- years commitment in a PhD program. I want to test the waters first before deciding if I need to continue for a PhD or just delve into the industry.

What do you guys think. I had a modest application list- 3 schools for MS EE. I was a little disappointed in my GRE scores so I felt applying to many schools would not make much difference. I was wrong actually.

I was accepted in all but nothing on full funding yet. I have a pending application for a direct phD program, recommendation letters delaying things do you think funding could still come through the PhD route given the time constraints for fall 2018..deadline is May BTW.

CSU ft Collins: Accepted
Cleveland state Ohio: Accepted
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville: Accepted+ (partial funding)

UTD - PhD....pending --Application incomplete.

Nothing o. Like most other schools, they want us there first before providing opportunities for funding. When I contacted them, the response was the general "Funding is provided by the faculty...." sent mails to a few profs.. "but no luck.

I mailed a prof at Cleveland state University as regards funding, this was his response below.

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by tizentos: 8:44pm On Feb 28, 2018
Then I later replied that I have already been admitted maybe there is something he can do from his end...this was his second response.

I think you should apply. It is worth the risk. The fact that he even stated that your research interest aligns with his is a good sign.

The award is for tuition only and it is just over half of the annual tuition. However I still have over 10K USD in a year to pay in health insurance and other fees.

Thanks for the list.

I contacted the Head of Department of the program I intend to apply concerning funding and below is the response I got from him

Dear XX,

Yes, international students are eligible for assistantships.  However, an important caveat is that the Biology Department does not award graduate teaching assistantships to international students in their first semester in the Biology MS program.  There are a couple of reasons for this.  First, we want students to have experience in a U.S. classroom before they teach a lab section.  Second, before the university allows international students to work as graduate teaching assistants, the student must pass a test of spoken English that is administered on-campus.  I know that you have a lot of your education in England, but I expect that this requirement would still apply.  International students usually do not arrive until shortly before the start of the semester and we cannot hold a GTA position that long because if the student does not pass the test then we do not have time to find a replacement teacher.  Most students pass this test in their first semester and then are eligible for graduate teaching assistantships in their second semester and thereafter.   The Biology Department does not administer graduate research assistantships, but individual professors may have grant funding that would support a GRA position.  Here again though, most professors will not offer a GRA position until they have met and interacted with a student.  So, the first semester in the MS program can be challenging for international students because financial support is scarce.  However, the opportunities for funding are much greater after the first semester.

What do you guys suggest and application will close today?

Good day house,
I recently started following this forum and appreciate the idea and sense of altruism in this group.
I also have an inquiry:
I graduated with a First Class Geology and Mining (GPA 4.59/5.00) and intend to write my GRE at most in two-months time. I have been practicing for the GRE General exam for about 15 days and had an average score of 150 verbal, 156 quantitative (totalling about 306). I know I can make improvements (my goal is at least 320). I intend to obtain my MSc in Petroleum Geoscience in the US, but lately I realised full funding through GA or TA is more feasible in a PhD program.
My question is "Is it advisable to make applications for PhD directly, since I have heard cases of individuals going straight from a BSc to PhD? "

Thanks in anticipation!!!

Yes I will advise you mix your applications. Some for MS,some for PhD. I assume you're targeting Spring and Fall 2019, so you have time to do extensive research on the schools you want to apply to.Mail alot of Professors and from their responses, you will be able to conclude on the nature of funding available in their schools.I wish you all the best in your GRE.Cheers.
