Before Buhari, taxi in Abuja would take you from one part of town to the other for N300 to N500, no questions or complaints by the driver. In Lagos, for example, from the local to the international airport (5 to 10 minutes ride maximum!!!) they would ask for 2-4000 naira. Then, if you have just landed and are unlucky to have an appointment at the other end of town (lets say, in Victoria Island) you could arrive there late, very late. In Lagos, sometimes from A to B it takes 15 minutes, and sometimes the same distance takes 4 or more hours. The problem of lagos is traffic jams, major traffic jams. Usually, from the international airport to the hotel where I usually stay on arrivals it would take a 15 to 20 minutes ride, comfortably. However, on June 10th evening, after one very heavy thunderstorm, it took me over 4 hours to reach my hotel. So, 6 hours flight from Germany to Lagos, then over an hour to get out of the airport and then another 4 hours in the car, for just a few kilometers ride. It rains in Abuja too, but the infrastructure is adequate to take all the water away quickly enough. Lagos needs planning and complete redesign which will never happen because over 20 million people live there now.

As for business, Lagos is better because all major companies open their first office there.

Nonsense article. The OP haven't been to Abuja.

Lagos traffic alone is tourist attraction grin

Lagos is a city of madness, I cannot live there mbok.

I tell you.

I am an original Lagos Boi but since I got to Abuja in 2004, I see no reason returning to Lagos. Anytime I have the misfortune of going to Lagos, I always thank God I left in 2004!

Useless city with arrogant pricks who think say dem sabi pass.

I worked in a ministry in Abuja before taking up a better appointment in Eket, and I've visited Lagos a couple of times. Abuja is the most decent city to work and live in as far as Nigeria is concerned.

1. Basic facilities utilities and services are abound and within easy reach.

2. No traffic gridlock. This makes for remarkably less time lost in transiting from point A to B.

3. Decent accommodation for all class of people.

4. Saner work environment. Cos the city is well planned and the plan is adhered to the built environment space requirement for work is better defined.

5. Cheaper transport. All thru when I was working in Abuja I never for once paid more than 300 for drop within the city.

6. Nightlife is fun and to a great extent you feel safer in Abuja even at night than anywhere else where a police rogue or street urchin could suddenly harass you.

7. Job opportunities are also abound in Abuja if you keep your eyes opened.

OP, You Lied In Your Mode Of Transportation. In that area, don't compare Abuja and Lagos. Abuja mode of transportation is very organised and decent. No Touts or Agberoes. Good road network in Abuja than Lagos...

When I was in Lagos, I woke up 4am to work and got home in 11pm but here in Abuja I walk up 6:30am to work then get home 6.00pm or 6:30pm
Op, before you say anything, I have experience in both places

Well said bruv!!! The Op has no idea what living in Abuja is compared to Lag. He may be right when it comes to accomodation but wrong in all other aspects. You can run different jobs at the same time, wake up 7am to get to your office by 8am, close from work by 5 and get home by 6pm. There is night life here in Abuja, a lot of hangouts where you will catch all the fun u need, even leave club by 2 am and get home safe withoit fear of armed robbery or police stopping you and shooting you. I have experienced both sides, Abuja is far better than Lagos to work. I will prefer to earn 70k in Abuja and spend 10k on transport than earn 100k in Lagos and spend 20k on transport coupled with stress from traffic

Babes in Lagos are relatively affordable and more accessible in Lagos compare to Abuja.
In Lagos you can see a babe that wont mind to foot the bill if she really likes you but Abuja babe go scrape your hair finish, come scrape your bie-bie join am.

you lied Abuja is preferable to Lagos with d following points:
1. Transport fare is cheaper in abj to lag e. g Masaka to Wuse is just #150
2. Housing, you can get condusive accommodation in outkirts e. g Mararaba, jikwoyi
3.Business opportunity,if u have a new biz innovative u can easily sell cause d competition is not too stiff to lag
4.Jobs,lag have more jobs to abj,but so many companies are springing up in abj
5.The regular flooding, traffic jam n dirty that is synonymous with lag is very very minimal in abj
6Food, foods are relatively cheap in abj compared to lag why an average Hausa man don't believe in exploiting people for customer
LAG IS GOOD BUT ABJ IS PREFERABLE

Can we contribute hands and beat this OP for the hogwash he just posted?

I dont mind taking a pay cut just to relocate to Abuja or anywhere else. If you like stress maybe Lagos is for you but waking up everyday panicking because of expected traffic is enough trouble than the cost of living in Abuja. Also because you are extra stressed in Lagos you have to pay extra money for things you should be doing yourself.

Too tired to cook, you would eat out.
Too tired to iron your shirt, you outsource. Things that should you should save on you have to spend extra just to keep up.
Twice the cost of fueling because of constant traffic. Average employee in Lagos spend average of 3 to 4hours in traffic daily.
So put all these together and you would see that what you wrote there is the opposite of things.

And what is this entertainment that you guys shout about in Lagos? Is it going to bars or what? Because for the life of me I don't see anything as regards sitting in one position drinking whatever as entertainment because that's what you lots call entertainment. Abi is it the fifteen minutes boat ride for 10000 is what you call entertainment and some of us are not even night crawlers. So what ?

If you are looking to know if it is better to work in Lagos than Abuja, then this post would help. For a long time, there has been a debate between Abuja vs. Lagos, which is a better city to work has been ongoing. In this post, I will list out 5 good reasons why I believe is it better to work in Lagos than Abuja, especially for young graduates who are starting off their careers.

No doubt, most cities have so many things in common, which makes it quite difficult in making a choice. However, there are certain unique truths that can’t be uncovered if you haven’t stayed in any of the locations.

I will show you the 5 Reasons why you should work in Lagos than Abuja

Cost of Living

If you want a reason why you should work in Lagos than Abuja, then you should consider the cost of living in the two cities. The average cost of living in Abuja is two times higher than that of Lagos. In Lagos, you can find houses that can fit your budget perfectly. Depending on the location you find yourself, you can spend according to your budget. When it comes to living in Abuja, the average cost of living is almost on the high side irrespective of the location.

Job Opportunities

Unless you are thinking of becoming a politician, then you should consider starting up your career in Lagos. Your chances of switching jobs in Lagos are higher than that of Abuja. Majority of the job openings in Nigeria are seen in Lagos, as compared to Abuja.

Most of the job openings in Abuja are either government jobs or private companies who can’t pay you a reasonable amount of salary to foot your cost of living in the city.

Mode of Transportation

If you don’t have a car in Abuja, then you’d probably have a hard time moving from one part of the city to another. But when it comes to transport network and payments, Lagos is absolutely the best. When it comes to deciding whether you should work in Lagos than Abuja, then this should be a great determinant. Your safety might not be guaranteed in Lagos when it comes to the use of public transportation, but it is relatively cheaper and very efficient – especially when you have mastered it.

Fun Activities/Nightlife

After a stressful day/week, if you are looking for the perfect city to enable you wind down, then Lagos is the perfect catch. Nightlife and other activities are almost not in existence in Abuja, which makes the social life in the city boring. Lagos offers several activities that can make you quickly erase all the stress of the week and day.

Money Making Opportunities

In Lagos, there are several money making opportunities. Your chances of making money when you work in Lagos are higher than that of Abuja. When you work in Lagos, you can have other side hustles that can fetch you money easily. You can easily combine several jobs to be able to pay several bills. This is because of the availability of jobs openings in Nigeria.

When it comes to a decision to work in Lagos or Abuja, these points should be able to help you make a choice.

Accomodation is far cheaper in Abuja than Lagos. There are suburbs that you will still get descent accommodation under 400k for a 2 bedroom flat and if you factor security. road network and general serenity, Abuja trumps Lagos. How much is a flat in Egbeda going for now? 500-600K!

Abuja has the best road network in Nigeria and transportation in Abuja is far cheaper than Lagos. You can get a drop from Kubwa to the Airport for 2,500k - a distance of more than 50km! That is twice the distance from Oshodi to Apapa. How much does it cost to take a drop from Apapa to V.I? Or those your useless wooden chair danfos that cost about 400 naira from Allen to Obalende?

Abuja may not have a high density of oloshos but olosho still dey and far better than those smelly Lagos girls. Because I know what you meant by night life you are referring to Olosho joints.

My friend you nailed it. End of discussion!

I relocated from Lagos to Abuja a few years ago majorly because the daily commute from home to work and back was accelerating my old age. In fact my head started going bald really fast because of traffic holdup. Even with the higher cost of living here in Abuja I won't move back to Lagos for any reason.

The nightlife here is awesome if you know where to go and also depending on your entertainment budget. All the clubbing in Ikeja or Lagos Island is replicated in Wuse 11 and the security network is better and friendlier than Lagos.

Transportation is cheaper, cleaner and more organized. However, accommodation is steep unless for those who don't mind hanging out in the satellite towns like Mararaba and Masaka...

Nice write up...

TBT the OP might be right with 3 and 4 but those two doesn't and can never overbalance the uniqueness of living in Abuja.

The orderliness of that city is impressively overwhelming.... What more can you ask of a city where you have relatively low traffic drama, almost zero rowdiness, security quite intact.

You can literally operate a laptop and flaunt any gadget of choice anywhere in abuja be it bar, eatery, garden and public spots generally with no iota of fear of harassment/embarrassment from the men on black.
Residents of Abuja are pretty cool and polite, their commercial commuters lack that agbero tendencies too, unlike Lagos where I'm aghast of everybody each time I visit.

Some lady here on NL narrated few weeks ago her "one chance" ordeal as result of coming out as early as 4am all for the sake of getting to work early ,,,,,damn I was like what the heck which kind work and what sort of a place do I have to wake up as early as 4am for work in Abuja...
I believe it has to do with what rocks ones boat (another man's meat is another's poo) because undoubtedly some people can be used to discomfort, stress and hassle lifestyle, certainly for me Abuja's serene environment and august lifestyle is a bigger YES having had a taste of both cities.

How would anyone in their right senses compare Lagos to Abuja? na wa for Lagos people oh! The average Lagos guy is so used to stress and abnormally that when he finds a normal place he begins to complain it's boring! Besides the economic opportunities in Lagos, that place is practically hell! especially peeps that live in the mainland and have to shuttle to the island every single day
