If you hold another passport other than a Nigerian one, you're not fully a Nigerian. You're simply a Nigerian by convineance. These dual citizens need to stay in their lane. If you won't stand infront of these revolutionary changes you're suggesting, nobody will take you seriously suggesting them in the back of the line. In short come full ground to naija and start the movement or be quiet. It's easy to be positive while in a well developed U.K. And abroad is sweet; at least Canada.
Please help me tell them ma'am.

@ell77 said something about someone being an IT whiz and irokoTV thingy. Me self I have ideas that I believe should fly.
Startup something, look for fund, nobody would support you. You did your best, look for investors, none, the government nothing. I doubt if Buhari knows what startup is yet we want to grow technologically, in health, security, education yet there are no plans.

No plans to move us forward. Now I have friends who I thought never even "thought" of going abroad applying to schools just to "start again".

Looooool!!!

Are you still minding her(ell77)? As they say, "talk is cheap"

Some posters here have made the same suggestion that her preaching will only carry weight if she decides to go back and live permanently in Nigeria. It is only then that all her preaching to make individual changes in Nigeria will be taken seriously.

I am currently doing an Msc in Advanced Process Integration and Design at the University of Manchester and i am making plans to relocate permenently to Canada.

Reason:

The nigerian government does not have a blue print neither does it value excellence. With what i know, I am sure that I, as well as many other professionals could put heads to provide solutions to some of the problems in the refineries that would increase the throughput. The refineries need a total overhaul. More efficient state-of the art refineries need to be in place if the cost of production is to be mininized and value added materials increased. Even though the government know this, their very inefficient bureaucracies will retard funding. Even if funding manages to tunnel its way out from the goverment, there are so many sheep in wolves clothing waiting to chop and clean mouth. I even have reasons to believe that some of these problems are largely artificially created. Our very short-sighted politicians will contrain those who are genuinely willing to provide their best to alleviate the current unpleasant predicament.

I like your thinking. Yes sabotage is one of the greatest barriers to development in Nigeria right now.

@maternal - Although the rest of your comment is obviously not well thought out at all. I do agree with the part I highlighted in bold. If I was a single woman, I would already be there. Trust me. I have so many ideas, and when I do come, I hope I will be able to create as big an impact as I envisage. Millions of people read Nairaland everyday, and unlike me, some may be in a position to relocate to Nigeria, set up shop and create that change immediately. If they listen to all the negative talk and no one speaks up for the positives like myself and some others they will not come home and the jobs they could create, problems they could solve and people they could help will not be helped.

Some questions for you. You don't have to answer here if you don't wish to. But please carefully consider it:
1) If you leave Nigeria (I am assuming you have never left Nigeria for more than 3 months either), will you no longer be a Nigerian?

2) Also, will you not think about how you can help out back home?

So do you believe individuals and groups cannot make change in Nigeria?

Some Individuals and groups are tryng to bring about change in Nigeria but are inhibited by the general rotten mentality.

Education and Religion that ought to change the general rotten mentality have been corrupted.

Things are not looking good at all to the enlightened minds.

This is sad. And I believe it is true.

But, can I ask what happens when those individuals with rotten mentalities move abroad? Do they remain the same and sink or change their outlook and swim? If they do change abroad, why can't they do so at home?

That's a million dollar question. I remember I was on a flight from Lagos with a stop over in Frankfurt. You need to see the way people were acting so disorderly like illiterates. We got to Frankfurt and you need to see the way the same people started acting orderly and sane. I don't know if it's the naija environment but we change once we enter Nigeria.

Most of our leaders studied abroad or have kids abroad and travel a lot. They all act differently when abroad and when they return they revert to acting like crazy people.

@Olalekank - No problem. Life is too short to believe every thing people say. Try it yourself, have a pitch ready based on your business plan and look for investors. I can't give clear advice over where to look since I don't know exactly what you are into but a google search brings up:

I am also interested in those fields as well as some other fields. When you have a business pitch feel from to PM me at the very least I could point you in the right direction as I plan to run an accelerator program in the future or maybe I can even invest.

Yes, many people are influenced by their environment and in fact many others change once they are in the presence of non-Nigerians. The sad fact is, they are still the same person. So if they could act this orderly in Nigeria, would Nigeria not be a little better off? Human beings are so complex!

As for those leaders, I believe they show their true selves in Nigeria and they do not play up abroad because someone would actually hold them accountable for it. Overseas those in positions of authority see them as just another black man or woman.

Baba, so far we don't have basic amenities in Nigeria, people will continue to migrate even if they earn 1milla monthly.

Just stroll from Tejuoso market in YAba to Ojuelegba flaunting your iPhone 7, if SARS won't wahala you, either you part with some fees or you have a family member in the military or para military that will save you.

Or you rushed a sick relative to hospital, you were told no doctor to attend to him, or you were given drugs to buy, you went to the hospital pharmacy, they tell you they don't have, you went outside to buy the drugs, you were sold fake drugs.

Baba, we have a lot of problems in this country that you can't solve by earning good salary, you can only use your good salary to ameliorate it.

If you've travelled out if this country to a more saner country, you will understand better that it's not about earning "good salary ".

Well I won't argue anymore, if I haven't been to those countries before I won't have argue with you.

We have different opinion anyways.

As far as I know Nigeria door is always opened.

Wow. Congratulations on your latest addition! Thank God you and your child are both well. Sounds like you had amazing doctors in the USA. Please make sure you rest a lot, after almost 9 months and having an induction I know you must need the rest! I assume you are a citizen there and won't have to travel back with the newborn? If not please wait until at least the 6 to 8 weeks postnatal check for yourself to confirm the high BP has gone or is being well managed since the doctors you had back home were not up to par (your BP could be pregnancy related and will hopefully disappear).

Let's pray Nigerian hospitals improve, I can imagine how many have lost lives already at the hands of inept doctors. And the fact that more doctors are leaving every day, what happens to those who cannot afford to travel out for medical care?

I wish non-medical doctors could own hospitals in Nigeria, I would have sourced investment funds to do such and perhaps many others.

Hmmmm reading your all your post on this thread makes me smh! Have you ever experienced hunger in your life? Like you are hungry And you dont have money to buy food, you went to a construction site worked as a laborer from 7am to 5pm but before 5pm the man that's supposed to pay you is nowhere to be found that is how you will carry your sorry self back to your family without kobo or if you are lucky you receive 2k naira less than 10usd for the day. I prefer working in a restaurant abroad washing plates and getting paid for my job than suffering here without getting paid! In fact i have a very close friend who is a furniture maker (carpenter) the dude has been idle since last month because there's no work to do even if he found a job to do his employer end up paying him half of his money cus he knows that he is broke and desperate there by taking advantage of him! Thats wbat is wrong With Nigeria so forget all this your story even if i'm earning 1million a month i will leave Nigeria because to make it in Nigeria legally is 50/50 chance. I'm a Muslim and my religion forbid me to feed myself and my family with haram! I know someone personally that earn 45k per month working with state government but he drives a Peugeot 407 and live in GRA how did he get the bar to live that kind of life?? You will be walking on the street police will pull over and arrest you until you pay them or they drag you to the station write false statement and force you to sign! There are morethan 1million inmates languishing in Nigerian prisons awaiting trial! Awaiting trial o! There is no way a poor man will win a case in a Nigerian court of law!!
If You dont know someone in Nigeria OYO is your case!

You are living in the UK so you wont know what it takes to be a Nigerian! Maternal is right. i will leave Nigeria one day and will never come back i will just help my Family and friends relocate cus Nigeria is failed state!

Black people are too self centered, you just confirmed it and this is why we can't develop as a nation. We care only about ourselves, ourselves and ourselves with no regard to others and the larger society.

So you will be happy that you have solar and inverter and have 24/7 light while your neighbors wallow in darkness. Some people have bought SUVs to minimize the effect of bad roads, some have surrounded their house with 12 feet wall, nails and barb wires to protect themselves from bad people and they are happy thinking this is all to life.

Until we start to value collective and society progress instead of individual progress, this country will remain a shithole. The difference between us and the western world is that the value collective progress, you don't need to be rich to enjoy basic amenities, you don't need to be rich to call 911 when in danger to get immediate police protection and many more.

At the end of the day, it shouldn't be about money. I prefer to be in an environment where things work for all irrespective of whether they are rich or poor than to be in an environment where getting the basic things of life will depend on how rich or poor you are.

kiss Too much wisdom will not kill you, bro..
I stumbled on this thread, read your post and felt like seeing you in person for a strong handshake.
Self centeredness is the reason Nigeria and a host of other African countries remain the way they are.. A lot of Nigerians think exactly like the guy you quoted (very myopic selfish view).. Such a shame that a basic amenity like constant power supply will require you to be rich to get it..

It's always easier to look at things from the other side, believe me. The whole story about your Corp year thing was simply an adventure for you not a way of life like millions of Nigerians experiencing that same situation since they were born.
Thank God my story isn't too bad but every day, I don't fail to see those who suffer a worse fate than me in this country. I am a doctor and I had a bitter experience at my workplace few days ago. I was almost beaten up by some members of an illegal union known as JOHESU. They had gone on strike and were still hanging around hospital premises bullying doctors and locum staff employed to keep health services running. Someone took the head of an oxygen cylinder off when it struck midnight on the day they were to embark on their strike. A preterm neonate was connected to that cylinder. It took the efforts of the doctors to stop him and reconnect the oxygen for the baby to live.
I can go on and on of my experiences so far in the health sector but let me stop here. The environment is becoming very toxic and hostile for any reasonable intellectual human being to work in. When a nurse, pharmacist and lab scientist decide to collaborate with cleaners, porters and ward maids to fight against doctors - very pathetic situation. The bone of contention is that they want an equal pay with medical doctors. Where is that done in the world? I work 12-18 hours in a day most of the times especially when I'm on call and someone who runs morning, afternoon and night shifts wants to earn as much peanuts as I do. Absolutely pathetic!

Interesting discussion going on in here. Truth be told, I don't think any Nigerian is happy about the state of the nation except of course such a person is benefiting from the failure. I share the same sentiments with eli77 on giving back and helping to build a better Nigeria. However, I think this is just a dream; dreams do come true and everyone should have a dream but it takes deliberate and conscious effort in the right direction to make dreams become reality.
The question is what conscious steps is the government taking now to achieve the dream of a better Nigeria? In fact, does the government even have a dream? It seems the government isn't tackling the deep-rooted problems of the Country and is only trying to just do something. It's like someone that has pimples and uses make-up to cover them instead of solving the main problem.
Let's leave the government and come down to us, the people. We are so faced with many challenges that we can't even see the bigger picture let alone think of the greater good of the society. From no power supply to no water supply; from bad roads that keep you in traffic for extended periods of time to your Oga at the office that withholds your salary from you or tries to have a relationship with you; from danfo driving against normal flow of traffic on a major road (one way) endangering hundreds of lives and doesn't get caught to police officers asking openly for bribe with guns on them. The list is endless. Just yesterday, a man known by a colleague was driving in traffic on his way home after the day's work and called my colleague to come rescue him because he couldn't drive anymore. While my colleague was on his way to meet the man, some good samaritans called my colleague and informed him to meet them at LASUTH. When they got to LASUTH, there was no free bed to take this man in as usual so they took the man to a private hospital where 250k Naira was demanded to be paid before treating the man. This was around 10pm. The man was then taken to another hospital that my colleague uses where the man was pronounced dead on arrival.
In the end, no one can do beyond his capacity but many people can achieve a lot together which is why I agree with eli77 on building partnerships and joining force for the greater good of the society. I believe these people that will join forces and achieve great things should be in the government if not, they will be distracted by their individual challenges to overcome.

tongue tongue
I went to a hospital with a surgical emergency and was met by a clueless doctor who told me that there is nothing they can do since the nurses were on strike. Only to come here and have this lady soil my mind with a one-sided story of what is really happening.
Who in his or her right mind removes an oxygen valve connected to a critical patient, something that can easily be replaced, all in a bud to give a dog a bad name.

The Nigerian health sector is a serious warzone. Our current rating stand at 180 out of 189 countries of the world and the most unhealthiest place to practice as a health professional.

Please do not soil this thread with your juvenile stories. You can create a thread of your " encounters" with the illegal whatever somewhere else.

Lol...Juvenile, you say??
Get over yourself madam.. It's pretty obvious you are either one of them or a sympathizer..
Kindly ignore my posts next time as I don't have the time to deal with toxic people like you and your cohorts.

Seriously, you want the doctor to attend to your surgical emergency without any assistance? Who's going to sterilize the surgical instruments, monitor your vital signs and keep charts? Of course, the doctor wouldn't do all that by himself so the best thing would have been to stabilise you and refer to a private center..
Thank God you agree to the fact that Nigeria is an unhealthy place to practice. The government is your enemy here and not the doctor with limited resources to work with.

If you can type your toxic first post here about your coworkers like that , it goes to show how hostile the work environment in Nigeria is. I was told that doctors are working with all that political jargons through the media, as if everything can be done by them, not knowing they are using it to garner public sympathy on how they can do all and how unimportant others are. That is deceit.
Them versus us bullcrap not even about patients. I barf.
