FOR NEW DRIVERS

If a partner asks for security deposit ( especially these ones shouting 35k ) and you have the money, don't just drop the cash yet. Go and do a thorough check on the car
Inspect the car between 12 noon and 3:30 pm when the sun is hot ( to verify if the ac works. If the ac has to be turned to No 3 or high before it cools, then be wary of that car). Also ensure all the vents are OK.

Ask the partner to service the car before you pick it ( if it isn't serviced yet)

Check the lights front and rear ( for dead ones and non functional ones)

Observe the sound of the engine ( if it revs too high for a normal car)

How neat is the interior?( the seats, dashboard etc)

Check the body and paint. ( dented bumpers, faded body paint, dents, Scratches)

Tyres

If your partner asks for weekly delivery of more than 35k, flee. I repeat, FLEE

Remember they will always say you are to bear the cost of minor repairs. If you ignore these tips, then you will understand that these repairs are not minor. Your church members will contribute to help you remit your weekly debt.
Riders will rate you and your eyes will open. From 5.0 to 4.6
Ask the partner to state clearly in the agreement form what will happen to your security deposit at the expiry of the contract.

If you are satisfied that these are sorted out, you can then drop your hard earned security deposit.

I stated that it is better to either reduce your fleet during the raining season, or park the car if u still fixing the same thing that is cause by the rain factor.. I stated that people that depend on uber has the main source of income go hear am this period... also the fact that repairs will drive owners out of the business.. It is sure regulating itself... There are so many cars for sale in Abuja and Lagosians are trooping to buy and bring to the platform.
Abuja has excellent roads compared to Lagosians, but I noticed those guys will never go to mechanix unless something major. You all know how you take your cars for one repair and end up doing 5 repairs. That one no be for Abuja peeps. You'll see clean rides, probably tinted, but if you hear suspension noises you'll run. Their mileages are equally very high.

Drivers be careful.

I was in church one day when they were discussing uber business and I just laughed. People are buying all manner of craps looking for drivers to dump on. Their usual shock is when they hear "make 150k per week" for their mind, they'll assume at least 75k for them. After buying the car and 30-35k hits them plus repairs, many just give up and blame drivers.
This business sha, advise your neighbours, to avoid stories that touch the heart. Many are using susu money to buy craps.

Don't worry stories that will touch will surely increase

A lot of factors could be responsible for this.

1. People are now enlightened.

2. Car Owners with good drivers are holding and treating them better like partners instead of master - slave.

3. Lot of drivers now couldn't pass car owners simple test. E.G. The mobile number of your previous partners, why did you leave etc.

4. Security Deposit - A driver paying security deposit takes the job and the business relationship more serious because something is now at stake.

5. Fasting Period - I understand business is a bit dull due to ongoing ramanda.

6. Verifiable Guarantors are getting scared. Car owners now understand the importance and essence of Guarantors.

7. This thread is not only the Uber/Taxify community on Nairaland and .

8. Drivers are getting educated about the importance of vehicle inspection before paying security deposit.

9. Migration - Some drivers have move to the other side of the business chain. They now drive their own cars.

10. School are in session and people awaiting NYSC callup letters are lean at the moment.

11. Car Owners are now taking driver recruitment more seriously.

12. Abi cost of car acquisition don reduce.

Anyway, I like the new direction. Hopefully we will have less Kazeems as Car Owners and less of Henry (Gazzuzz's guy) or Bayo (HP guy that dump car) as drivers on the platform.

Cheers.

If non-drivers are allowed to contribute, let me chip this in.

The Car Make, Model and Year - This would not only make your work smooth but would certainly improve your performance. A car that's not fuel efficient would eat into your earnings and the higher the year the better for you, if you lucky.

Open the car trunk during vehicle inspections, do you see any wires flying around, run for your life.

The Dashboard - Do you observe any engine light on. If yes, quickly Google it and know the meaning of the lights and why it's on.

Car Accessories - Is the car equipped with necessary accessories, C-Caution, Jack, Spanners, Jump Starter Cable etc.

Engine Oil - Open the trunk and check the engine oil. Is it black? The oil level etc.

Access to Vehicle - Are you gonna be an errand boy or you are gonna have total access n freedom to the car. E.g. Errand Boy (Sorry Driver) would driver oga to office or oga's pikins, wife or mistress around town.

Would come back with more details as I remember.

Lemme look for small trouble.

So if I import Grade A pristine Tokunbo non-accidented and I demand for more than 35k as weekly rental the driver should flee.

If I take you to Elizade, Globe Motor, Briscoe or Coscharis and asked you to choose the vehicle of your choice for the business and make the required payment, would me asking for more than 35k be too much after spending more than 15 million on a brand new car?

If you don't want dead cars, you should be ready to deliver return on investment (ROI).

Car owners using 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 cars on the platform are been human and considerate taking 35k as weekly rental.

If drivers don't want dead cars, you also need to be ready to deliver.

You can't placed a ceil on weekly rentals and expect car owners invest more than 3 millions on pristine (Grade A) non-accidented tokunbo.

If you want to deliver less, expect less.

High performance car, dey chop plenty money to acquire and car owners also need recoup amount invested before Bayo n Henry of drivers world turn the car to Naija Used Dead Car.

Modalities Guiding Security deposits in Ride sharing by Taxi App Guy

Ride sharing is daily becoming more popular in Nigeria. Every day, thousands of people, especially in Lagos and Abuja are signing up.
3 years into the rideshare story in Nigeria, participants are still learning the modalities that guide the industry, car owners(hereafter referred to as partners) and drivers are winging it, learning as they go.
To be clear, a good number of Partners also function as drivers, registering their vehicles on ridesharing platforms and driving it themselves. This group of people do not register in the modalities this post discusses.
This post mainly focuses on Partners and drivers, and the relationship in between. Especially regarding the issue of Security deposits.
Of recent, there has been a clamour for security deposits from Partners. But the clamour does not seem to be backed with concrete modalities for protecting both parties. To drivers, this sounds like “Give me your money and never hear from it again”. While I am sure that partners do not intend to confiscate drivers’ money unduly, unintended consequences could cause this very scenario to be the case. With drivers eventually feeling cheated.
Nothing will end the integrity of security deposits quicker than disputes arising from mismanagement of such deposits. This is why I have set out to write out modalities that could eventually guide Security deposits in ride sharing.
While ride sharing is new, security deposits are not. Landlords in Nigeria have often insisted on security deposits to ensure their properties remain undamaged after the term of the contract with their tenants. Usually any business that deals with leasing or rental has some form of security deposit clause active in their contracts.
In business, disputes are sometimes inevitable. Disputes that arise between car owner and Driver can be settled between the two parties, but in cases where both parties require an impartial external arbitrator. Disputes can be settled by arbitration under the Nigeria Arbitration & Conciliation Act or any state Arbitration Act or in a court of competent jurisdiction as agreed by both parties.
While I have relied heavily on other documents and sources, this document may not be all-encompassing just yet and may need to be improved upon. I have tried to be fair to both parties in drafting it.
This document uses the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear Standards to determine fair wear and tear because I found no Nigerian Equivalent.
Re: If You Are Uber Partner In Lagos, Please Share Your Experience Here by taxiappguy: 4:10am On Jun 02, 2018
MODALITIES
Before releasing a security deposit to a partner, a driver must first carry out full checks on the vehicle to be leased. Car owners must disclose any potential dangers or defects in the vehicle.

Partners must sign a document that clearly states they have received a security deposit and will release it upon contract termination provided there is no unrepaired damage or default by driver.

Security deposits must be at least 50%, the maximum is 100%, of the smallest measure of rent time. So if the vehicle is on daily rent, security deposits must be at least 50% of daily rent. If it is weekly rent, the security deposit will be at least 50% of weekly rent, and so on. Capped at 100%.

Security deposits are not the partner’s property, indeed they belong to driver until damage or default(default defined as refusal or inability to pay rent) occurs according to the contract. The circumstances which a partner can claim security deposits must be clearly stated in the contract.

Termination of contract by either party must be by written notice or as otherwise agreed in the contract, if no damage or default is recorded, the partner must return the security deposit to the driver.

If contract is not terminated by written agreement, driver MAY be responsible for future payments.

The circumstances under which Car owner may keep security deposits are out of Car owners control, meaning a default or damage by driver has to occur before Car owner can lay claim to Security deposit. Car owner must inform Driver of his/her intent to utilise or keep Security deposit.

Car owner must allow driver quiet enjoyment of reasonable use of the vehicle, An example is Car owner cannot call driver to come and drive him with the vehicle to a place simply because car owner owns the vehicle.

Car owner must keep vehicle in good repair.

If after carrying out checks and leasing the vehicle, Driver discovers a fault with the vehicle caused by reasonable use, he is to relay this information to the Car owner. Car owner must fix vehicle immediately to allow driver continue enjoying his rental.

If car owner refuses to fix the vehicle, Driver may terminate the agreement, while fulfilling its terms and demand his security deposit back, unless fault is caused by driver neglect.

After the contract ends, Driver must leave vehicle in its original condition accounting for reasonable wear and tear. If the driver damages the vehicle, Car owner may keep the security deposit and sue the driver for damages not covered by security deposits.

A driver may sub-lease the vehicle to another person unless prohibited in the contract. If a driver sub-lets the car legally, he/she is still responsible for payments and terms of agreement with Car owner.

The Driver retains the right to insist on the timing and method of return of security deposit at the end of the contract.

Driver is expected to use the vehicle responsibly as stated by contract , and is expected to check radiator coolant fluid, gear oil, engine oil, windshield wiper fluid and all other checks that will enable the smooth running of the vehicle.

The way you talk about these bank loans like they are a walk in the park to access because you are a super performing Uber driver.Bros no be so...i don't think any Nigerian bank will give a loan to you to buy car on top say you be Uber driver otherwise name the bank make me self go collect cos i suppose fit dey eligible na.....
