Nigerian twitter user @dollycent has narrated how he got to win custody of his daughter, Velma after a bitter fight with his babymama.

According to him, she frustrated all his attempts to be a part of his daughter's life until Velma spoke up and said she preferred to be with her dad.

Read his tweets below;
"Let me tell a story Iv never shared with anybody before . And it’s about my daughter and the battle I’m fighting to keep her. It’s been a very mentally exhausting last 4 years

My gf at that time in grad school got pregnant . Wasn’t planned and it happened a year before I graduated. As a broke college student I told her I’m not ready for anything extra now other than graduating and getting my life together. So it was tough.

Had Velma three weeks to graduating . Then the real challenge started . We were in a custody battle . I wanted to be in my daughter’s life so bad. The mother got engaged to another man and moved to a different state . I was devastated

NOT even my dad or anybody in my family knew I had a daughter till she was 2. I sent a package to my dad on his birthday , and it was pictures of Velma . The man called me crying . It was emotional for us . So for two years I was only seeing my daughter 5 times a year.

On her birthday which I vowed I will never miss. And on major holidays . The mom did all she can to frustrate me . But I was persistent . I was never going to be called a dad that was never there for his daughter . I booked flights , even got her a tablet at 3 so we can FaceTime

But everything changed on her 4th birthday . On a visit . She told her mum she just wanna be with her dad. Her mum was speechless. At that point she knew she had lost the plot . And said I can see her anytime I want but I should withdraw all our court battle for custody

For the sake of peace I did . And it’s been the best thing to happen to me . Now she has her own Nigerian passport and Nigerian middle name ( Yetunde ) which I made sure is on all her legal documents. I’m so excited . She is my bundle of joy , my life , my everything ."

2years and your parents didn't know...fear men.

there's something I noticed on NL. if you express yourself, no matter how good it is, some humans here will and by will I mean WILL always think the opposite, and they will always find a way to throw insults at you, for expressing yourself.
if you not tough, and you among those who view and never comment please keep it that way, because those comments and replies you see here that makes you laugh, is getting someone somewhere depressed or angry.

if nairaland were to be a physical gathering na back to back fighting go close the gathering.

Good of you for knowing where you made mistake and rectifying the situation... The next thing is to be the Best Dad for her in this world. And the ladies should not deprive their children of being with their serious fathers.

a woman's mind is filled with deceptive thoughts even when the happiness of their child should come first, all they'll be thinking of the failed marriage, most men love their kids than the wife so for the love of the child, they'll let the case settle. Congrats my brother you've won her.

This kinda thing aint easy I must say.

Having a child 3 weeks before grad school.

You will only understand if/when you're in school and youre told by your GF "I can't find my p grin grin cheesy

Or youre a lady in school and you're expected to see your " you know" and it never came. That trauma alone!! not to talk of having a child.

You left her to suffer and go through it alone because YOU wanted to get your life together. Your own family not even having any idea for two years goes to show where you placed the baby in your "untogether" life. Typical and selfish. Shebi her own life wasn't worth "getting together" especially as she was the one going to go through the major pains of pregnancy and childbirth. No wonder she treated you that way.

Now you are ready to be in your child's life, it is a good thing and just enjoy the baby you initially abandoned but quit making it seem as though you were the angel and your ex the devil. There are two sides to a story.

I like him for being truthful. At least he agreed he didn't support the pregnancy at first. The lady must have been hurt by that too.
Good it is all sorted out.

If you don't want a baby, zip-up or use protection.

I once told someone why I chose to stay single until recently.

My reason

I was broke

Why have a girlfriend when you know you can't take responsibility for certain things?

Why have sex when you can't handle what comes after it?

Why on earth will a woman Deny her child access to the dad?
Plain ridiculous.
More so, a willing dad. A very low percentage of single dads over there are determined to right the wrong and she's messing that up.

You told your gf you didn't want a child after you got her pregnant and she had d child and you come ranting about what? What if she had obliged you and terminated?

How would the daughter feel when she grows up and learns you didn't want her to start with?
We are supposed to act happy for you and all that but this is how I see it
Modified

For the guys quoting me to spill trash, do you spare a moment for the girl at all? If this happened 5 years ago, he was 16 he got his life together, who was there for the girl throughout her sleepless nights? The trauma with family and all that? No one from his family knew for two years!! And all of a sudden he wants to come back and be in her life just like that? Shii don't work that way, he should apologise and right his ways with the baby mama 1st

Seems most ppl didn't see this part. Sure a broke college student and u couldn't use protection or at least support her emotionally...do u know what she went thru all dat time.put urself in her shoes first...did u even ask for her forgiveness...don't blame her.

Okay. Lesson learnt. So unprotected sex is never for the unready and his U.S. ex-girlfriend case was far more better than that of some new nigerian single moms .

Well, while living separately isn't the ideal thing for you kids, I must say I admire you for for trying to be a part of your daughter's life. And it paid off of course. Just hoping you won't take advantage of this to completely pull her out of her mom's reach. Irrespective of how you feel about the child, she has more right to keep the child than you have, and I GUESS you understand that too. No matter what you feel, she needs her mom more that she needs you, especially as she is a girl. So don't feel like you have won a trophy. Have a nice day

the "extra" means he wasn't ready for marriage but wanted to be in his child life. the baby mama moved on quickly and started frustrating him from what he had dream of doing.

If you give a woman chance she will missed use it. I will never have baby in western society, never ever will i make such mistake. Women want so called child support still deny the father right just to see the kids?

No matter how he puts it the guy is not a good person.
he abandoned the poor girl when she was pregnant hence the treatment he receives from her. No woman would deny a man his child if the man was actually there for her. Even if its obvious u dont have a kobo but willing to support her with the little u have, she will not deny u your child.

The baby is still a kid and uv used toys and gifts to make her like u, dont worry, she will run back to her mom when she finds out the true character.

On of the worse thing a man can do to a woman is impregnate her then deny and abandon her. Its the height of wickedness

It is too early for me to be faced with his kind of IQ.
Madam, where did "extra" and marriage come in contact in this story. You think this is Africa Magic where impregnating a girl automatically means marrying her. undecided undecided
