Abuja – After several months of uncertainty, President Muhammadu Buhari has given assurance that he will sign the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) agreement having weighed the pros and cons of the treaty.

He gave the assurance while playing host to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is in Abuja, the nation’s capital for a summit organised by the African Export and Import Bank.

Buhari explained that ordinarily he would have appended his signature to the document long ago, but his slow pace of reading as well as peculiar challenges of Nigeria’s unemployed population informed his decision to withhold assent for the time being.

He said, “I am very careful about what I sign whether it is my checkbook or agreements especially when it involves nation, states. As your president has said, we are so populated and have so many young unemployed citizens and our industries are just coming up.

“So, in trying to guarantee employment, goods and services in our country, we have to be careful with agreements that will compete maybe successfully against our upcoming industries. I was presented with the document, I am a very slow reader maybe, because I was a soldier. I didn’t read it fast enough before my officials saw that it was all right for signature. I kept it on my table. I will soon sign it”.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress and a number of stakeholders in Nigeria had warned of negative implications of signing the AFCFTA treaty, with a caveat that such assent may stifle job creation in Nigeria.

The development had prompted President Buhari to put off his trip to Rwanda where the agreement was to be signed. However, other continental leaders took the bold step to sign the document.

Meanwhile, reacting to the spate of killing of Nigerians residing in South Africa, Ramaphosa attributed it to criminal elements in his country.

He said South Africans are not averse to Nigerians living in their midst, noting that the relationship between both countries dates back to the days of apartheid struggles.

Ramaphosa said, “There has been quite a number of incidence in our country where foreign nationals some of whom are Nigerians have lost their lives and are being attacked. I will like to say here and now that that has been as a result of criminal activity among our own people which we are focusing on from a criminal element point of view.

“I want to state here and now that South Africans do not have any form of negative disposition or hatred towards Nigerians and in the main Nigerians in South Africa and a number of places of our country live side by side, they corporate very well and some are in the corporate structures of our various companies and some are traders and some are into a number of things.

“So, I want to dispel this notion that when a Nigerian loses his or her life in South Africa, it is as a result of an intentional action by South Africans against Nigerians. That is simply not true.”

Lagos City is the biggest City in West Africa. Lagos State is the smallest state in Nigeria( I'm talking about Land Mass here).
ln terms of Population, Lagos State is the largest in Naija with about 25 million people, just the Size of Ghana.

I wanted clarity on that, because the guy I qouted said Lagos is the biggest city in Africa not West Africa. I just wanted to check bigger in what exactly?.

That South African President would say anything to have buhari sign , he knows Nigeria has a big population and South African businesses already understand the nigerian business scene. Just yesterday I was watching a busines programme after the interaction between the two presidents, and the South African black business caucus were calling on all young and emerging producers , industrialists and manufactures to come forward and apply for grants from government institutions like nyda because this is A chance for them to hit it big in Africa (Nigeria and West Africa) seem to be their biggest targets. I was happy when nigeria didn't sign before because I knew even the infant manufacturing companies in SA can really destroy us because they produce superior products and everything works here, I'm talking constant power supply , good roads , swift transportation - from rural farming communities to the city manufactures and processors. Plus efficient airports and harbours. Not to mention that SA know how to put their differences aside when it comes to the development of their country or money issues and they can connive. Let's wait and see how 99% of products in SA owned franchises like shopbrite and them will be produced in south Africa. Their government I think already has laws that 60% of products sold at these multinationals must be produced by black/ coloured under 35 , particularly women. And I smell an increase on that coming up after yesterday and since the likes of malema are desperate for the votes of this group , they will push it with everything before 2019 election. And that won't be good for our ailing industries, I hope there will be strict laws to protect our own, because I was in Lagos in December, I was amazed that some agricultural products that are supposedly restricted from entering our markets from South Africa were sold and packaged as made in SA at shopbrite without any authorities bothering them . This asslicking visit was just a way to soften us to open up out markets to them wider this time around. South Africans don't respect Nigeria nor Nigerians and Ramaphosa knows that but like Zuma he knows playing humble in Nigeria to appease the masses and stroke our egos of how we are so important to their history always does the trick. We celebrated when Zuma came to play devils advocate about the mtn fine, and screamed all over how we know how to make them beg as big brother in Africa, but how much of the initial fee did South Africa pay after the visit ? Who really won. They are still sending millions to South Africa. I'm afraid this visit was for a similar purpose, them taking the money and us getting nothing glory of the past .

You have a lot of good points And you seem to know a lot about development. Yes south african can dump a lot of goods in nigeria because of their superior infrastructure. Both my big worry countries like ghana ,cameroon, benin republic and togo these are the countries which are coming up fast in west africa a lot of their development is due to illegal trade futa nigeria the amount of smuggled goods from these countries into nigeria is alarming. industries move to dose contries to manufacture and process and then smuggled a good into nigeria. We invest more than 10 billion us dollar in ghana, a lot of those products are smuggled into nigeria a good example I worked on one of the biggest coconut farms in ghana, the coconut powder and coconut oil they were putting them in boxes written made in nigeria to be smuggled into nigeria.

The person which you are agreeing with has a lot of good points and he knows what he's saying. In this country we are borrowing money massively form international organisations just to import. The richest nigeria is beginning to complain bitterly. We cannot survive on importation only because people are too lazy. Because of good bread and good food you are putting the country in massive debt.you Cannot complete nigeria with south africa ,south africa get their massive industrial power up to today, why in nigeria it is the opposite all the companies and industries which were producing we keep them out. All that glitters is not gold. Now Our leaders are now begging other african countries because there are alot of illegal nigerians induced countries we turned ourselves into slaves and beggars

Nigeria's problem is not oil and not the government nigeria's biggest problem is its people. Just look at nigeria's abroad the same thing. A problem did not start with oil government the problems started from education and illiteracy. We were pumping illiterates out of the universities and giving them big big posted no look what has happened. Another of are problem in nigeria is stupidity the people are so stupid that anybody telling the truth they fight and go and support criminals even nigerians abroad have the same problem that's why they are killed always. They do not know what correct. We nigerians no who can develop a country but prefer to vote for an idiot them we want respect. Nigeria's biggest problem is nigerians. If you go to other countries nobody wants to employ us even the people do not want to see us because of are behaviour only thing we can do is destroyed.
