A renowned lecturer Austin Nweze, and Ayo Baje an author and columnist has called for total restructuring of Nigeria into independent and strong subregions and a salary structure for politicians that is in conformity with the current civil service salary structure, saying that the current structure of Nigeria doesn’t support productivity and comparative growth while the homogenous take-home pay for politicians and poor performance by politicians have not brought the needed improvement in governance.

The duo who were both speakers at a lecture held yesterday in Lagos to mark the 58th Independence anniversary of Nigeria organized by the Center for Peace Reorientation and Human Development, under the theme 2019 Elections: Finding a Smart Formula for Elections’ Integrity in Nigeria, lamented that politicians have brought more hardship to Nigerians, to such an extent that it does seem that Nigerians would have been better off without politicians and the government they run.

To end the tide of Nigeria’s continuous decline into poverty, Nweze who is a renowned educationist and former governorship aspirant in Ebony State called for a colligate system of government in that would allow for all regions to focus on its development priorities and progress based on areas of comparative advantage.

Nweze further decried the high level of iliteracy and the increasing level of poverty in Nigeria as responsible for electoral flaws and emergence of corrupt leaders. He noted that a well informed citizenship will reduce the chances of bad leaders emerging, saying “less poor people will deliver better elections in Nigeria”.

On the other hand, Ayo Baje worried that politicians and security agencies have not shown any commitment to free and fair elections in Nigeria. He expressed concerns that the recent governorship election in Osun state had been marred by irregularities. He also noted that Nigeria is currently running an Ant Hill type leadership system where politicians are the Kings and Queens who the citizens labour to feed.

Regarding the forthcoming general elections in 2019, both speakers expressed genuine fears saying that the election may not hold in the regular pattern as previous elections, insinuating that there are possibilities of the elections being either delayed or disrupted going by the actions of desperate politicians who are anxious to grab or retain power to the detriment of the wellbeing of the country and it’s citizens.

One of the best opinions for a policy change in Nigeria but it's obviously useless at the moment.

Nigerians love their oppressors a lot and would defend them, even with their lives.

Watch the same "oppressed Nigerians" criticize Nweze and Baje's opinions on Nairaland and you'll know that they deserve more than the devilish leaders in politics, religion and tradition, that have oppressed them for years.

I tell you.

I don't feel pity for them, I wish a leaders worse than Buhari would take over.

When a people stray away from God (Forget Nigerians' religious pretensions on Fridays (Muslims) and Sundays (Christians)), they are punished with bad leaders

Yes, until we make politics unattractive we are not yet ready for the growth of our country.

Politics is a call to serve and I have not seen a place where servants are greater than their masters (except in Nigeria).

That's why in US their politicians don't earn as high as what is obtained in Nigeria. Can you imagine that! A whole US.

That's why those that go into politics there go for service to their land and not for personal gains because you will gain more if you are on your own.

Politics is a call to serve. Nigeria must do what's right by really putting politicians on Civil Service Salary Structure as suggested.

I've always opined that our lawmakers are the problem of this country.

Imagine them collecting millions of naira monthly, and they're struggling to pay minimum wage.

Those states owing salaries, I'm not sure they owe lawmakers any salary, but they're owing the peasants.

And what do the lawmakers do,
seat down in the chambers,
sleep,
read punch newspaper, which of course they collect allowance for,
stand up to say one or 2 things,
may not say anything for the day even,
collect bribe to pass budgets into law,
never do anything in their constituents for years,
I'm not sure they even do charity events

So, what do they use all the big fat cheques for?

The earlier we realize the senators and house of reps constitute a bigger problem. The earlier we get to solve a lot of problems in this country.

I can't even believe they're dragging minimum wage.

It's a pity, smh
