afam4eva: can you just be sensible for once !!!! learn to talk to people ChinenyeN: ChinenyeN, i agree with you that we can keep our dialect; whether ngwa, oku, nnewi, oka etc but brother you have to see reason here, what i mean is that; there have to be common language that unite us igbos think of it, in the future when all the igbos have adopted 1 dialect and ngwa is still differnet, do you not think ngwas then will say they are not igbos or do you not think discrimination will start think if oka, nnewi etc drop there dialect for the greater good in aligbo what make ngwa different remember unity is first before any dialect we are keeping, the more united we are in terms of language and culture the better it is for us. i know you love ngwa dialect but at the end of the day, please ChineneyeN give it a good thought |

EzeUche_: I love ur passion for Igbo unity, but,i think our dialects are one of the most beautiful attribute that we have as a nation. If there is clan conscience is a great way to preserve it. We(Ukwuani) have a strong Ukwuani conscience. We were able to put together an Ukwuani dictionary. The language is preserved. When Biafra is actualized, we will be able to fully practice and strengthen our dialect in our district/province area. Hearing different Igbo dialects is kind of like touring a historic area/country to me, it is that amazing to me. |

Alj Harem, every group must not respond the same way to a particular situation, and not everyone within a particular group must respond the same way to a particular situation. Ngwa does not have to respond the same way Nnewi, or Oka, etc. respond. Likewise, I don't have to respond the same way some of my uncles and aunts have. By the way, discrimination has long since been happening. Most of it is more or less taunting, but it's discrimination nonetheless, and I've given it a good thought, for the past 4 years or so, but to be honest, my mindset just isn't bringing me to that point where I can simply say "yes", as if it doesn't matter. It's just not there for me. Chyz*:Thanks, I guess. |
Re: Which Igbo Dialect Do You Like The Most by aljharem11(m): 8:40pm On Feb 17, 2011 |
ChinenyeN: perfectly understood, not everyone has to respond to something; yes you are very right but brother come to think of it, the world is globalizing and most people are now speaking english. now brother not that i mean to offend you but do you think ngwa will survive in the mist of 1 igbo dialect and english answer, i may but it is very much likelly to be diluted with the 1 igbo dialect and most of the ngwa words will be missing also do not get me wrong, i see were you are coming from (as an individual) but at the end of the day it is your choice brother i mean no one will live forever ( you might want something, the next generation might want another). thanks for you time alj harem |

Alj Harem, I hear you, and my thing is, as it stands right now, those who want to continue with their one Igbo language agenda can feel free to do so. I am only one rather insignificant individual. So I can't stand in their way, and likewise, none of them need me to be on board with their plan. And I guess I'm not a 'central Igbo kind of guy'. It just is what it is sometimes. |
Re: Which Igbo Dialect Do You Like The Most by EzeUche2(m): 2:57am On Feb 18, 2011 |
Chyz*: What is the use of speaking some of these dialects, in which there are Igbo dialects that are hard to understand even by native central Igbo speakers. Do you expect to converse with someone from Ika, while they are speaking in their dialect? Or what about that funny Afikpo dialect, that is very hard to understand by others. Some dialects need to go extinct, because I see them as a hindrance to progress for the Igbo race. Of course there will be regional Igbo dialects, just like you have regional English dialects, but I would hope that there are not as difficult to understand as some of the periphery Igbo dialects. So let me clarify, I wish to see the dialects that are difficult to understand by Central Igbo speakers to go extinct. Well I know it is harsh for me to say that, but it is a painful truth. And you can already see this process happening, even with me "wishing" for it. Central Igbo > Igbo dialects You have Igbos who would rather converse in English than Igbo, because they may only know their Igbo dialect or someone may not understand Central Igbo. Wherever Yorubas or Hausa meet a member of their group, they are always willing to speak their language, but when it comes to we (Igbos), we do not do that. |

I love all the Igbo dialects from the hills to the coasts. Ndigbo had already secured a centralized language, hence, central Igbo. |

Here is what I am wandering: How did traders from Arochukwu speak with traders from Nike-Ngwo (Enugwu) 'central Igbo', How did traders from Onicha speak with traders from Aba before 'central Igbo'? |

The Onicha Igbos is probably the sweetest Igbo to have ever graced my ear. Even my own Aro Igbo dialect is very rustic to the smooth Igbo spoken by the Onicha Igbo. If there is one dialect, that I wish I had, it would be the Onicha dialect. I would gladly give up this "Rivers" dialect that I speak for the Onicha Igbo. |

Aro dialect where "v" and "r" substitute h and f. Ex: In Aro we say: Instead of: Inhe, Ife Ivu, Iru Aru, Alu Ekele, Ekene Etolu, Etighiti Imela. Daalu Okoro. Okolo Avia or Ahia. Afia Ovia or ohia. Ofia Greet with Ndewo. - I biala? I biago |

Would you mind translating this into Owerri Dialect? "Igboland, the sweetest land, take thanks" In my own dialect it is "Aligbo obodo ka'uto Nara ekele". |
Re: Which Igbo Dialect Do You Like The Most by vicenzo(m): 12:16am On Jun 20, 2011 |
Idemili dialect rocks, unlike other dialect It is not heavy, every sentence and word is reduced to it shortest form. Gwara(told) becomes gwa, Gi(you) is reduced to 'i making G silent,ha is replaced by a lighter fa,akwukwo(school/book) become a'kwo ,ngwangwa(early/fast) becomes ngwa. A gwa i na fa jebe a'kwo ngwa: i told you that they went to school early. |

odumchi:What is the name of your dialect? In idemili we equally use osiso, but because every word is usually spoken in its shortest form,we are more likely to say"oiso" rather than osiso. Some dialects normally use ekwukwo instead of akwukwo, they always tend to replace a with e, so that ano becones eno, akpa(bag) becomes ekpa, akwu(palm fruit) becomes ekwu,i have a friend who hails from alaye in bende abia state, whenever he is speaking with his parents,i always notice this replacement of a with e,nkanu people in enugu are equally guilty of this. |

Re: Which Igbo Dialect Do You Like The Most by vicenzo(m): 2:25pm On Jun 21, 2011 |
chidyke77:Awka dialect can be heavy at times,i think it has something to do with incorporation of other dialects into their original language, places like amawbia have many non-nri migrants who brought with them their own languages which . The igbo you hear in onitsha is idemili dialect, idemili towns like obosi and nkpor have become part of onitsha, nkpor and obosi people believes that the land your call onitsha today was originally their farmland, onitsha people they believe, came from across the niger.Onitsha dialect always uses v rather than f,fa(idemili) becomes va(onitsha),afia(idemili) is avia(onitsha), saa(to wash in idemili),chaa(to wash in onitsha),ñuo(to drink in idemili), raa (to drink in onitsha). Nobody uses those onitsha words in onitsha town, except onitsha indigenes, the igbo you hear in onitsha town is mainly idemili, which is very similar to those spoken in njikoka, dunukofia and anaocha areas of anambra. |

vicenzo: My dialect is Arochukwu. I often find myself having to Think twice to decipher the type of Igbo spoken by the Ngwa or those on the extremes of Igboland as you pointed out. But despite the dialect, I believe every dialect is wonderful and must be preserved. |
