Parliamentary Democracy - Most Loyal Opposition by BigBashiru: 6:33pm On Aug 14, 2019 |
Nigeria needs a parliamentary democracy Her Majesty's Most Loyal Opposition, or the Official Opposition, in the United Kingdom is led by the Leader of the Opposition. This is usually the political party with the second-largest number of seats in the House of Commons, as the largest party will usually form Her Majesty's Government. Since May 2010, the Official Opposition has been the Labour Party, currently led by Jeremy Corbyn. Whilst most days in the House of Commons are set aside for government business, twenty days in each session are set aside for opposition debates. Of these days, seventeen are at the disposal of the Leader of the Opposition and three can be used by the leader of the smaller, or Tertiary, opposition party (for most recent history this has been the Liberal Democrats, though currently they have been replaced by the Scottish National Party).[4] Although the Opposition has no more formal powers in setting the Parliamentary agenda, in reality they have a certain influence through a process known as the usual channels.[4] |

Nigeria needs a parliamentary democracy as it's more accountable. That's what uk and Canada practice. Nigeria's current democracy just like Americas is a mess! 1 Like 1 Share |

Me I think they should abolish party systems in the legislative arm to avoid stupid party loyalty and make the executive sit up! |

You see why British Style of government would have suited Nigeria better than the current American style. To weaken Igbos at the war time, we ended up throwing everything away. |

EagleNest: Why do you igbos always seek attention? Must everything be about igbos? Igbos themselves destroyed the parliamentary system handed us by the British. Do you want to rewrite history again? |

MIKOLOWISKA: Buhari doesn't know the meaning of a loyal opposition. A loyal opposition opposes you in good faith for better governance. For example: "Since 2011 there has been 900 deaths in all federal hospitals; what is this government doing about this" "Millions of school children continue to be out of school and all we hear from this government is excuses or arbitrary figures - can this government tell the Nigerian people concrete results they have achieved in primary school education enrolment this year" This is loyal opposition in good faith but buhari will take it as a potential coup! Watch Patrick Brown's opposition debates on YouTube. State Assemblys also need to be parliamentary. |
