A group of 71 lawmakers of the House of Representatives, mostly from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have canvassed for the return of Nigeria from the presidential to the parliamentary system of government.

Briefing newsmen at the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, spokesmen of the group, Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers) and Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta), said the parliamentary system, as opposed to the presidential system, suits Nigeria because it is more economic friendly, cost effective and largely efficient in the conduct of government business.

Rising from “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2018,” the lawmakers lamented that whereas, countries under the parliamentary system were prospering, the presidential system has “reduced Nigeria to the poverty capital of the world.”

“We are 71 bi-partisan members of the House of Representatives, who feel that the parliamentary system of government promulgated by the Lyttleton Constitution of 1954 is the best for Nigeria since the presidential system has reduced us to the poverty capital of the world.

“Our position in this legislation clearly points to compelling advantages of parliamentary system of government, such as economic growth and development, as well as inherent efficiency in the conduct of government business.

“Studies have shown that countries under the presidential regimes consistently produce lower output, volatile inflation and greater income inequality relative to those under parliamentary system,” the group said.

However, this is coming just few months to the expiration of the legislative life of the 8th Assembly, thus raising concern over the period required to push the bill through the normal legislative process.

The bill, if passed, will also require the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari to become law, and be enshrined in the Constitution.

Recall that Nigeria practised the British-styled parliamentary system of government in the First Republic, from 1960 until 15 January, 1966 when the military took power.

However, the 1979 Constitution returned the country to the US-styled presidential system of government, largely because of the tensions and acrimonious politics of the First Republic.

Aside Ossai, other members of the group present at the briefing include Abdulsamad Dasuki (PDP, Sokoto), Boma Goodhead (PDP, Rivers), Timothy Golu (PDP, Plateau), Gabriel Onyenwife (PDP, Anambra), Sergius Ogun (PDP, Edo), Emeka Ujam (PDP, Enugu) among others.

As usual, running away from our problem, which is poor leadership which is fueled by corruption leading to mismanagement of resources that could have turn this nation around.

No matter how much resources Nigeria has, no matter how much potential we have and how much we make, as long as funds meant for development is mismanaged, as long as contracts are inflated, as long as we cannot face the elephant in the room, no matter how good your economic policies are, you can never develop.

This situation is like a father who is the bread winner that makes 1m per month but uses the money to drink, carry women, lavishes the money, irrespective of how much he earns, his house will never develop or thrive.

This is how you know these lawmakers are bunch of educated/uneducated dummies. First where is the research backing the claim that parliamentary systems are better for a federation? Do they realize the process of changing the entire structure of government, laws and decentralized systems? Maybe we should start by doing away with the bicameral legislature, and strengthen the judicial arm to be more independent. Jobless pipo! embarassed

Even though its a noble idea, these guys know they're simply chasing shadows.

Nigerians and they themselves know one if the things every Joe on the streets yearn for since '99, and that is for these men to Considerably cut back on their salaries and allowances and push for capital punishment for corruption, sadly, these two are the LEAST TALKED ABOUT items by the crooks.

Wouldn't such laws as stated above be far less easier to draft, pass, and implement as opposed to such complex endeavour like changing our system of government?

These guys are simply jobless and looking for ways to appear busy. Last time we checked, they have over five hundred bills unattended to on their desks.

Keep decievinf yourselves thinking you're deceiving Nigerians.

Great news for our democracy, if true. The semi-literate principalities in the National Assembly and in government would have to find other engagements. This is because the hallmark of parliamentary democracy is a good command of the English language and uncommon flair and articulation for Debate. Makes room for the best in erudition and intelligence. These present packs would be exempted for life!

CHANGE is constant!

Though Presidential system is very expensive!

But, if you believe that government should have more checks and balances, Presidential system will give you that.

The major problem I see in this Presidential system in Nigeria is the legislators not manning up to call a spade by it name!
