Thanks for the advice. Please which professional course do you suggest she enrol into.

It depends on the career path she wish to pursue. If she will like to go in the way of human resources, she can enrol with IPM (Institute of Personnel Management) or she can pursue a career in ICT (this path is wide with a myriad of options and opportunities). Someone up there mentioned the case of a friend that put-in for CISCO and has been doing well since graduation.

The secret is to kick-start the professional journey while you're still in school. By the time you graduate, you would have covered much ground with sufficient confidence that will separate you from the pack. The good thing is with some of these professional programmes, you can start earning money on your own on some freelancing platforms while still in school.

That was exactly what I wanted to major in but unfortunately, I was given another course of study.
However, be it as it may,no course is as bad in Nigeria now,my wife read history and has been working since her NYSC to date. I know many would have undervalued such a course but not as people see it.
Sometimes,is about the individual and not the course perse.

Let her go ahead. Wishing her good luck.

I have a Family friend who started Medicine at OAU, had to drop out in his 3rd year cuz he couldn’t cope, started Sociology at Uni Abuja, we all thought he was doomed.

He told us that he has started ICT Networking, Did all the CISCO thingy and got the highest certifications.

Computer Warehouse Group snapped him up before he finished Serving, He was balling there when an international company stole him as well.

Presently if you convert his salary, it’s above 1.3m monthly.

It was his ICT skills that paved way for him and not sociology.

Conflict resolution consultant.
I know some who consult for oil companies in the Niger Delta as well as for NDDC.

You will also rise quickly within the ranks of the police like former FCT Compol Lawrence Alobi, who is also a sociologist by training.

Sociology as a field of study is all encompassing. Firstly I have to stress out the fact that in Nigeria the knowledge is ridiculed.
Let me start by saying as a sociologist you can work anywhere and the first most important thing is that sociological knowledge will better your peraonal live in all ramifications.
Research is the hearth of any iinventio, innovation or discovery and no one does it better like the sociologist. As a medical sociology, your importance as an health provider cannot be overemphasized most essentially nowadays where social cause of illness and death as overweight the natural cause; talking about depression, frustration, all sort of stress caused by intensity of urban life, bipolar among sort of others which only can be explained sociologically.
More so, imagine if someone that study sociology choose to be a criminal who the hell in this universe can bring him to account? What am saying is that being a detective isn't an easy task and takes more than average knowledge to bbein the task and no other desipline offer that than a sub-field of sociology. Also sociologist are the best as an administrator because we look beyond administrative WORK in an administration but also welfarism of staff and the benefit to the larger society. A sociologist services is also needed in the Aviation, immigration, Custom to mention but few.
To better this country we need more of productive sociological knowledge, that is what France did during French Revolution, British also did the same during industrial revolution. When these two giant countries of the world faced their doom it was only through the sociological wisdom they scaled through.
Only sociology understand the world problem and only them can profer solution.

People here (like Jestin) who claim that “what you study in Nigeria doesn’t really count” are really misleading you because that assertion is factually not correct. It is on that premise that I will answer your question in a very frank and brutally-honest way. Given the fact that what is being taught in the Nigerian educational system is mainly focused on student’s acquisition of ‘Disciplinary Knowledge', and perhaps not so much on how to ‘apply’ that Knowledge in the real world, it is important that you, as the student, must start to think differently irrespective of your field of study.

Firstly, although I am not a Sociology degree holder, I can tell you authoritatively that acquisition of excellent ‘Disciplinary Knowledge’ is priceless. This is even more so, if your future plan is to become a ‘Specialist’ in that specific knowledge field, e.g. Sociology. In this case, your aim is to become a Researcher and (or) Professor, where you can also contribute to knowledge in your chosen area of specialization. So, if your sister's interest fits this category, then my advice is that she should be encouraged to study that Sociology to its logical end-point. She should get a PhD from studying it, and possibly get a Post-doctoral research experience. In doing so however, she should ensure that she does NOT obtain all her degrees in the same University. The idea here is that if one studies a chosen ‘field of knowledge’ across different universities, one’s mind will broaden, many possibilities will open-up and one’s horizon will not be limited. Thus, one sure career possibility is to teach at a University.

Secondly, I will tell you the following fact for free: you can ‘do anything you like' and be very successful with any type of qualification - including Sociology. As far as your ability to think clearly and independently is still functional, you can apply what you learnt in your field of study (e.g. Sociology) to solve any problem of your choosing.

Thirdly, with a Sociology degree in Nigeria for instance, you can:

(i). work for any government (Federal, State or Local), or School (Secondary, Polytechnic, College of Education, Universities etc). In these cases, you are
100% dependent on the salary your employer pays you. For possibilities outside Nigeria, see here: https://collegegrad.com/careers/sociologists

(ii). work as an Independent Consultant in your own private practice: (eg. Management Consulting, Human Resources Practitioner, Risk Analysis, International Relations Consultant, Conflict Management, Mediation, Travel/Hospitality Advisory/Consultancy, Grant Management, Anti-Corruption Consultation, Visa Facilitation Consultancy (eg., VFS Global) and lots more. This list is limitless, and as a fact, you are only limited by what you are able to imagine.

(iii). work in Nigeria for ANY private company that has a HR section. This includes any banks – eg. Central, Commercial, Industrial, Savings, Co-operative, Exchange, Investment, Agricultural and (as Credit Risk Analysts, Debt Portfolio Management, Debt Recovery, etc, and Embassies of foreign countries, or even International Organizations (eg: UNESCO, UN, NEPAD, AU, ECOWAS, etc).

My final pieces of advise are: be forward-thinking and do NOT allow anybody to discourage you. Do not look at where you are in life. Instead, look from where you are. Do not limit yourself!

Keep your head up and all forces will contrive to make your plans work out!

Dear OP,

I majored in sociology, finished 2015.... and its been amazing so far.

Snapshot of my resume.

Bussiness Analyst: in a tier 2 Management consulting firm 2017-2018

Strategy Analyst in a top tier investment banking firm, 2018-date

CFA scholarship recipient

Volunteer Research Analyst: Lagos Bussines School

Policy Writer: Stears Bussiness ( Google to see the caliber of writers on the network)

For the sake of those who feel it's not very rewarding to study sociology, My salary is between 280-350 monthly.

In all, I have come to notice that the average sociology student falls under societal limitations/ assumptions.

You can achieve anything you set your mind to, as long as it is genuine, a friend of mine studied Guidance and Counseling and is now an associate at Bank of America......

Go to school, be good, gain practical experience through internships and never feel as if anyone is better than you because of your course of study......the competition is not your colleague studying that fine course but your mate who graduated at Harvard and is refined...
