Efe42: I feel sad that our youths refuse to wake up from their slumber and smell the coffee. The reality is that there is no job out there waiting for you, we are no longer in the 70s, 80's or even 90s, in the 21st century, you create jobs and not search for jobs. Any course or degree that cannot equip you to create jobs is as useless as the K in knife. How many people can Oando and Total combined hire? What is even their total staff strength? What is the total number of people employed in the oil industry by IOCs. Outside contract staff, I doubt the total number is up to 5,000. I am talking about Total, chevron, Agip, Mobil, shell (shell has basically left Nigeria ) and the few indigenous oil companies. Meanwhile, you have millions of graduates dreaming of working in the oil industry. Ordinary 4,000 positions advertised by immigration, and 6.5 millions youths turned up. The job seekers were so much that stadiums in Nigeria could not contain them. This was in 2014. And you are crying over a few open positions in total and Oando. Do you know how many applicants applied, many with superior qualifications? Even ordinary Dangote truck driver's positions, over 500 PHD holders applied. You should even consider the rejections a blessing in disguise. It mean you should either start using the knowledge and skills you spent time and money acquiring at the university to create sellable goods or services, or go to acquire further knowledge and skills if you have not acquired enough. Read the story of some of the most successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria like Tony Elumelu and Jimo Ibrahimo, they were rejected by multiple companies until they use their skills to create wealth. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Well, I've been in similar situations and to be honest, it's not funny. My issue is with you doing nothing for two years. Two years?!?!?!?!  Honestly, that's not a nice thing to hear/read. How do you cope during this period? Also, I read that you like the oil and gas industry. Well, no problem with your predilection but the industry is highly competitive and the best of the best compete to get a foot into the sector especially at the entry level stage. Another thing is that people rarely leave the industry to other industries and as a result, you would find persons working in one company or different companies within the industry for a decade or three decades sef! An example is the Head of Total Exploration Nigeria. The man has been with Total since his NYSC in the late '80s! So inasmuch as there are opportunities here and there, the competition is fierce. Seplat that her recruitment this time two years ago had over 42, 000+ applicants for less than 30 slots and some of the applicants I met were exceptional. Some schooled at the best of institutions, one even studied all through his life in the UK and lots of first class everywhere. I implore you to try other sectors provided you fulfil the requirements. Furthermore, instead of staying at home doing nothing, I advise you find a way or ways to raise money for next year's Stutern's Graduate Accelerator Program for opportunities in the IT industry. Why I'm suggesting this is because the tech industry is egalitarian; no one cares about what and where you studied, and your grades. I know things aren't easy but you need to do something in the mean time which can change your trajectory for the better. Meanwhile, you can keep trying regarding job applications (your CV and cover letter being on point) and know your aptitude tests skills very well. Just know that it's highly competitive out there and these companies can afford to be very picky and select only the best of the best. What I'm saying in essence is.. enough of your certificate dependency...find a skill...IT skills preferably.... Give yourself some yrs.... Bro, you have to keep pushing. I'm also in a similar situation but man has to be relentless. I once got a regret mail while still writing a test at P&G. I've received many 'love letters' that I now recognize them before reading. Immediately you see....thank you for taking time.....it's a rejection I've done metering jobs though on contract, it didn't last, teaching jobs, managed to get a master's with a scholarship. Chevron recently kept mute just when we were on the verge on being taken for graduate internship. I'm learning coding too. Business is always good but sometimes you need some savings to start plus location factor. It's not easy when you're still on daily survival stage. So, all in all, never relent Please house, I'm also on the lookout for graduate internship positions, would appreciate any assistance...my discipline is Petroleum Engineering 1 Like |

I will suggest you start something small that you can earn from at the same time keep applying. You can never tell how huge the small business you start today might be tommorrow. It was even job hunt that brought me to Nairaland in 2007. But with absolute faith and service to God, today...I'm even begging for Leave. "I don work tire"...I even worked on ,Christmas Day and Boxing Day...Will still work on New Year eve and New Year Day itself (Media Industry). Please don't give up. I suggest you learn a trade or business. You can pay an igbo business man to tutor you for six months after which you can plead with family and friends to raise capital for you to start. Your job rejection is not death warrant. You get potential in you which God wants you to discover and nurtured to start growing. Eraise the servant mentality. You are an achiever and destined to be great. I was once like you until I discovered myself. I have seen person worked in multinational company suddenly resigned his appointment start his business. You might be thinking of where are you going to get money for the business. That's not your problem. You can't be rich and wealthy working under company. And, if you are praying for success under any company, indirectly you are praying for your employer to succeed first, that's when he or she can remember you. My Bible tells me that God will bless the works of my hands. My situation was critical pass yours. So, be cheerful and discover yourself! You are not destined to be a servant but a boss. Efe42: You need to understand that the competition for jobs in IOCs is very steep, there are over 100,000 applicants for these jobs and the position available are not more than 100. So people with relationships in these companies have an upper hand because they are furnished with inside information of the requirements, secondly because of the huge application volume people are screened out based on stringent conditions (i.e I once applied to a company countless times and got rejected only to be told by someone I met in another interview that they only accept first class graduates). I will recommend that you see IOCs as bonus job opportunity, most people I know working in top IOCs started in smaller companies developed their skills and got recruited later in their career. My advice is keep your options open, don't settle for fishing in the pond at your backyard when there is a river at the other side of your fence. 1 Like |

Many aren't destined to work for people but people to work for him. I'm a practical example, I was working with the FG but got terminated unjustly but still fighting it in court.
