Bros, don't be too pessimistic, if we continue in this direction, eventually, we will get there. Egypt and other countries didn't get to where they were with leaders Nigeria had been cursed with from independence.

Have faith. Give it time. In time, in time.

I have been seeing different types of Nigerian rice in the market and non looks neat like foreign rice. They are even expensive.

Which market?

U never see Nigerian rice...

They are expensive due to people's greed down South. They aren't as expensive in the North.

Notwithstanding, prices will keep falling as volume increases.

I'm curious . Was rice consumption in the 60s low because Nigerians were damn too poor to afford rice or was it low because Nigerians didn't really fancy rice then ?

Likely both...
Before my time obviously, but TASTES have changed and rice (and bread) has become staple food.

In our parents' younger days...
Rice was apparently reserved for Sundays and occasions (Christmas, weddings, etc), and local rice was crap!

Im skeptical about that 8 tons figure. That means Nigeria is completely self sufficient in rice and more than doubled production. If that much rice was produced it would show in price decline.

Nigerians didn't fancy rice. My grandma called it 'bird food for lazy people' who could not pound yam which her husband ate everyday.

Read his question again. He asked how long it takes to plant rice and then harvest? Not about planting in dry season. His question was how long. And when was the border closed.

For answer. The border was closed in October. Let's assume October 1 though it looks more like end or middle. That's just 3 months ago. It takes rice 3-4 months to grow. Wet or dry rice. Maybe dry even takes longer. We didn't mention Financials, land prep etc. So, let's just say at least 8 months from now.

He asked a valid question. You seem to have answered the wrong question.

And our people already announced 3 months later that we have surpassed Egypt in rice production.

Let's even assume this is the case. How much can Nigeria really make from this production? Other countries also produce. If we are thinking that by shutting down international business, because of rice we will become developed, I call this an interesting economic strategy. It takes more than rice. We are not asking the right question. As usual, we are just super excited. Why rice? Why not ground nut? The glut in the market will shock all of us. Very soon, the farmers will be dashing out rice. Then what next?

By the way, quantity reflects pricing in a demad curve. If quantity has gone up by so much, wetin dey worry price na?

I don't think the high cost of rice is due to low supply. It's because of the high cost of production.
Yet output has more than doubled. You forget economies of scale. The price MUST drop. No two ways about it.

Rice used to be a Sunday-Sunday delicacy in Nigeria in the 80s and early 90s. But now a staple food.
And pertaining the growth figure, 8million tonnes claim, I'd want to agree cos if you stay around the northern states, you'd experience first hand the number of trucks moving paddy to different milling companies daily. I worked in a balance local government area in gombe mid-west year and I can testify that they were a lot of rice fields and I can imagine what it'd be like in kebbi and the likes

Trust me, the Govt got it right with the rice revolution. Rice from the farm/source is very cheap, the problem is with the middle men/women.

I had same notion of rice being expensive until my wife went into this Business and saw the secret of this trade, the price kept dropping as she was getting closer to the very source of the rice sent from Kano/kaduna/Kebbi.

We are our own problem, trust me.
Rice is very cheap form the rice farmers.

And you think I am stuck in the South abi?

Are you saying that there isn't substantial disparity in the prices?

Don't even go there. Not just with rice, bag of beans that goes for less than N10,000 in the North is sold for almost N20,000 down South. Same applies to Onion, Tomato, Pepper, Goat, Cow etc, and up to rent and medical treatment costs.

North is my second home.
