$2600 is not a lot of money if you live in Canada. How long will it take you to spend that .

If you will no longer return to Nigeria because of that amount, I sympathize with your situation.

Another dumb comment... FYI that money is enough to sustain him for at least 3 month.

Say only what you know you dummy.

India is 1.3 billion people in population. India is also not giving out money to her Citizens, but how many Indians condemn their country like Nigerians do? Nigeria has about 200 Million people, with many people not paying any kind of money to government as taxes. Even if it is 1000 Naira you can pay as tax every month to FIRS or LIRS, please do so. Don't just assume that the government is embezzling all the money being paid as taxes in Nigeria. You can't expect the government to drop palliative money into your bank account, when it is on record that your small business has not paid any tax to the State or Federal Government since its inception. Yes, the government is corrupt, but are you not contributing to the rot in the nation in your own way? All the countries paying their citizens and residents good sums of money have effective tax collection systems, with about 75% - 85% of the citizens paying tax monthly. Please,be honest with yourself cool cool cool cool cool. When last did you pay tax as a business owner or self employed worker in Nigeria? Don't develop a something for nothing mentality, please sad sad sad sad sad sad sad.

I get your point Bro. Surely the same should also apply to our political office holders since they expect low income earners and self employed people who receive no form of government support to also pay taxes.

Why should low income earners like tailors, barbers, hair salons, kabu kabu drivers, brick layers etc. pay income tax when senators, governors, ministers, etc do not pay a dime in taxes? They even have significant allowances for crazy things! Till today, no one knows how much a senator earns monthly.

For a developing nation like we are, can you compare a market trader who pays rent from her daily sales with someone in Abuja who receives wardrobe allowances? These low income earners and self employed people possibly create more jobs than our politicians have ever done. Reflect on this Bro.

Nice one.

Just stay safe and away from any potential mass shooting site.

Our people say beauty no dey complete.

Their Government dey people-oriented, but you fit just say make you stroll go supermarket to buy some grocery the next thing one kolo oyibo wey half done and medium-rare meat don chop part of him brain go just enter there begin shoot everybody for no just cause.

With this lockdown I just wished I was in my village aswear.

Easy jeje life...wetin concern you concern coro

I was shocked to notice there were no mosquitoes in my village the last time I visited. I slept with the netless windows open.

I pity the people flooding my mention as a result of my comment above.

If the import of my submission is lost on you and you deem it fit to vent your anger at life through this, well, your case is irredeemable obviously both home and away.

There is absolutely no need hiding under any cloak to start self-insulting.

Na pikin wey no get sense go stand on top mountain or hill begin point hand say, "see my mama for there, she dey useless, she no get sense".

My admonition and prayers to our loved ones the world over remains, to keep safe, and may God continually hide us under the shadow of his wings now and beyond.

Canadians don't do mass shootings. Anything like that which occur recently is an anomaly.

Very correct, that money would barely see you through a full month but the OP looks to me like a student so he may hang in there with it.

For the reality of Canada, you need more than that to survive here but for my Naija people, it is quite a sum and i don't really blame anyone.

Sorry sir, but you aren't making much sense here....

Taxes are universal, and based on earning potential versus national inflation factors, not to mention overall demographic economic growth rate...

Am I supposed to pay more taxes or equal taxes with people in another nation who earn far higher, enjoy far better developmental dividends, and enjoy totally superior economies??!...

Let's even assume I give up half of my income into the coffers of the nation's account, alongside millions of fellow hardworking Nigerians, will that make this thieving and immensely corrupt government more transparent to put them to judicial use??! The 'paltry' ones we have been paying for decades, how far has it benefited you or I??!... The massive revenues from oil since 1960, what has it done for us all??!...

Go read up the economic growth and sustenance of countries like England and France... Where there is no accountability and transparency, there will be no economic growth!!! If you like take 70% of all working and hustling citizens' incomes, it will never reflect in the economy!!! NEVER!!!

Please, look for better excuses for the failures of all your leaders, past and present (especially the present clueless ones)!!!
I am not looking for excuse for anyone. We survived all these years on oil money and when someone steals it we don't feel the pain that much like we will if the steal our sweat (tax). Our leaders can only be as accountable as we force them to be. After looting us dry we still show them love because of ethnic bias. Is it not Nigerians on nairaland that I see saying Abba Kyari was a good man? The leaders will act like their followers encourage them to.

ur moniker is quite apt.
the major reason people shy away from tax is the fact that u pay or u don't pay, fg does absolutely nothing! They are unaccountable, corrupt, highhanded, nepotistic....the only way someone will be happy paying tax continously is if he/she sees the impact of it, otherwise next time, he'll find a way to dodge.

Someone raised a point as a taxpayer. Those on the tax database and current with payment should be given some palliatives. This will encourage others to start paying tax in the future. The problem is that government does not want people to pay personal tax. They fear it will trigger mass demand for accountability, which will put an end to their profligacy. On the other hand, taxation lowers the cost of living as it increases the revenue base of government to provide infrastructures and services at a discount. The fear of embezzlement of taxpayers money is there but if more people pay they can be challenged. Right now they are getting away with murder because only 10 million people are on the national tax database. Out of which 4.6 million are in Lagos State. Even in Lagos State, only 400,000 paid their tax in 2019 out of the 4.6 million.

No you have not updated yourself, India has opened its vault, Law in place that everyone will be paid like before, Till last week 23 Billion USD had been transferred to Women accounts, Even Largest Petrochemical Refiner Reliance is giving 25% more salary. Yesterday Free Rice, Wheat, Sugar etc was announced for 95% of population. Absolutely Free healthcare and this was from Federal Government now every state is providing something. Just Today another state Delhi has announced of rent waiver for Students and Factory workers (Apartment, house owners will be reimbursed by state government) You can not compare how efficiently they have manged, BTW Food Corporation of India has announce 3 years worth of grain stocks for whole nation.
Any African Politicians can not even do 5% of what India`s Government is doing for their citizen. Either they have Good citizen or Good politicians i dont know but this continent is suffering from greed, corruption and blaming others for our own mistakes. Please dont compare with India, China, Israel, Canada etc etc, its already a torture for us.

Hmm

Canada's budget this year is $355 billion for 24 million people.

Nigeria's budget this year is $26 billion for 200 million people.

And you expect Nigeria to give palliative of N626000 naira per person or per family?

Nigeria is a mess, but we are not up to Canada's level. Vote for governments who would make us an industrial nation, then we can talk.

To all those people cursing Nigeria up-thread...yes, we have had corrupt governments. But there is no way our government can afford to give stimulus of N626,000 naira to everyone. Not on our budget, without taking even more mega loans.

Modified

Even giving 100million Nigerians N50000 each a month would involve spending the equivalent of our budget for the year in one month.($26 Billion)

No basis of comparison really. Let's even forget the amount (N626K) because Canada and Nigeria don't have identical economies. The main issue is that we do not have any form of structure in Nigeria. There is no social register to track citizens welfare and income status either through taxes or identity management(please don't mention NIMC cos it's not functioning yet). Whatever it is they are using as social register now is flawed and will never work.

@OP, Canada has a population of 37million according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada

The number of people who pay tax in Nigeria are not up to one third of the population. Unless you are talking about VAT, and even that is not enough to serve the entire population in these terms.....you forget a major part of the Nigerian market is in the informal sector. I'm surprised at where you get your claim that 60% of Nigerians pay tax.
You forgot that the informal sector pays tax.The hair stylist, bike rider, food vendor, chemist shop, super market pays taxes. We don't have good database because the system is corrupt
