For Kaduna state I dont agree because Gbagyi were the first settlers in the major parts of the city. It is a Gbagyi word not hausa word? Kada in hausa is one crocodile while many are called kadodi. The people just claimed the word. 3 Likes |

Most state were named after Rivers & Lakes, some were even named girlfriend's name while others were named after intruders or conquerors.
The only state that's named after her citizen/people is Edo state.

BluntTheApostle:
You are right. It sounds sort of lazy. The article should have dug deeper to get information on the origin of the "Oyo" name itself.
For instance, we know that modern Israel got her name from the Kingdom of Israel. That is too obvious.
But then, we also know the original source of the name "Israel" -- Jacob was renamed Israel for wrestling with an angel.
The article should have done this concerning the name "Oyo". Oyo means ile ti o yo that is a wet or clay land that Oranmiyan arrive at when he first settled in the old oyo. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Raymeskey: Nice work
Most of the names comes from river no wonder the states are not stable they floating like river
Adam didn't named things the name you know them today, what Adam did was that he gave them recognition and identity in terms of their behavior, feature etc, it from these the early scientist or people coined these names from and published it. Adam didn't called Lion, Lion neither did he named in your language but he gave its recognition and Identity as fearless, boldness, strong etc. With these features any where you go and you see such characteristics in an animal you call it Lion.

Akwa Ibom is not named after the Qua iboe river. I don't know why I keep hearing this from some persons. Akwa Ibom means Great Ibom. Ibom is the ancestral home of the ibibios. It can also be interpreted in full as Akwa Abasi Ibom state" meaning "The state of the Great God of the Ibibios or the state of the almighty God". In other words "God's own state".
"Qua Iboe" is the English corruption of the word "Akwa obio" which mean a large town. Akwa Obio is a coastal community in Akwa Ibom state. Qua Iboe or kwa Iboe was used by the British colonialists and early missionaries to describe the area during the precolonial era maybe because of the difficulty they end encountered in pronouncing the word "Akwa Obio"
The Qua Iboe river which is a tributary of the Atlantic and a distributary of the Cross river is named after the coinage "Qua Iboe". Qua Iboe Church which is popular in Akwa Ibom state was named after the same community by the missionaries. 8 Likes 1 Share |
