Its exactly 10 years today I relocated from Nigeria to the US through the Visa lottery program, unfortunately our batch was the last one before Nigeria was removed. I won the visa lottery after 17 try.

Took me almost a year to get my foot on the ground. Visited Nigeria a year and half later to check on my family, wife and son, They did joined me over six years ago, I have been in and out of Nigeria five times till date...…..wish I could make it every year but with children its a bit difficult.

One good decision I took was to start and complete my retirement home in Nigeria before my family joined me, much more easier as financial responsibility is huge now. I have had two more children since they arrive, its now a family of five with three sons.

Its a rare privilege to which I will eternally be grateful to God...….Lastly I have missed Nigeria every single day for the last 10 years and always looking forward to the day I will return back if opportunity present itself or when my children are fully grown.

Wishing everyone dreams come true.

I am one of those lucky ones who won the last batch of the visa lottery in 2012 and to God be the glory, it's been a mix of bitter-sweet experiences but with a very happy ending.

I left Nigeria on March 30th, 2013 for Houston Texas, I had a very hard start because I came into America with a $100 bill, yes a single hundred dollar bill from which I took a shuttle ride to my host house with $36 and opened my first bank account with Bank of America a few days later.

It was extremely hard for me to get a job fast because I don't have a car or the money to buy one, my host was still new in the system with absolutely no knowledge or experience to share but it all went well to date but not without series of challenges and been homeless for somedays along the way.

I left my wife who was 6 months pregnant back then, My first trip back to Nigeria was September 2014 after 18 months to check on my wife and son, and other members of the family, it was a very emotional experience to be in Nigeria again and I promised my wife to be back soonest which I did 6 months later in March 2015, I have visited Nigeria back and forth 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017,2018,2019 except for 2020 because of the Covid crisis

I started filling for my wife and son after 2 years in the system and they have since joined me in March 2017, we had another son in September 2020.

God has blessed us with a nice house in Nigeria which was built to completion in 2017.

Looking back, it's been nothing but determination, hard work, tenacity, optimism, and above all the grace of God.

Waow!...it's been 7 years now. I wonder where those lucky souls who won the visa lotteries back then are now...the challenges and opportunities they have faced...and if life abroad was all they hoped it'll be.

Oh, the stories they would tell...all sweet and bitter. The perfect mix of life.

I just wonder

Quite a while guys, Hope all of una dey feel the American dream?.

I had an experience that was kinda strange to me that i wish to share perhaps it might be of benefit to others.

I got a job ( Having gone through the recruitment stages ) and was asked to report at their recruitment head office where i was referred for medical test.

I got to the medical center but was told i dont have enough hair on me ( They checked everywhere for my body ) to carry out the necessary drug test ( I just had a hair cut and a clean shave a night before ). I was given 2 weeks to grow enough hair and come back for the drug test.

My scheduled training was postponed till i am done with medicals.

I sought the audience of those who have been here but they told me they never heard of such before.

Na wa for this American people o, Make una dey leave una hair grow well well o

missannie:
I made d call today & i was told that they have mail it since 20th of May @ my old address, but when i got to the point of entry; I gave them the new address. I wonder why they still posted it to the old address. Though, they gave me a tracking number & told me to call US Post office services. But if am still unable to get it, that means i'll apply for a New one. I pray i get it oo!

Thank you so much Adesojiaderemi, my prayer for you today is that God will bless you mightily. Thanks, am greatful.

Try locating the old one by calling the post office and have then track it, liaise with the USCIS and have them sent it back to you......Its not free to get a new one having lost the initial one. It might cost you as much as $450. I stand to be corrected

When ever i face some challenges here and quickly call one of my big mentors here in America to lament my plight, He simply reply by saying " AMERICA DREAM NONI !!!". : Meaning, NOTHING GOOD COMES EASY.

Kunlexymoore: Seal777, you have really made my day. Nice words of encouragement for those of us coming to join you guys soonest. There are so many negative words flying around I tell you. I'm a banker. A lot of people have been telling me I should not leave my job o, there's nothing in America bla bla bla even my relatives over there in America, painting a gloomy picture of America, that things are very difficult that I'll see for myself. I think it all spheres down to getting the right information. I surf the internet a lot as well as observe and ask questions too.

Recently, I know a friend (a former colleague) who won the visa lottery and just spent 2yrs in America. She is presently an "Asst. Vice President" in Bank of America. Before then some people were telling me you can not get a corporate job unless you school there first but I found out from research, while it's true to an extent, it is not always so! especially when you have some experience back home.

So I believe you my brother, that we should always search out the truth for ourselves and not just dwell on hear say which could be very demoralizing. Good night my peeps!

Truly its challenging settling down here in America, just like relocating within Nigeria. You go through the orientation period and the weeks of stay at home without a job. Much more challenging for those of us in Houston area where you have to know how to drive and also need a car to do virtually everything. I lost three job offers in a row for the simple fact that i don't have a car and METRO Buses don't ply those routes, Very painful but you can not run faster than your shadows.

If you be hustler for naija and you intend coming around with $100 like me, prepare your mind very well, its going to be very tough but not Impossible. The result will justify the struggle.

If you have enough money, come with it so you can move faster within a very short time as you will have what you need at your disposal.

Don't come to America with the aim of getting a white collar job, its very tricky, prepare to come and hustle for months after which you start getting your bearing. ( Remember you are black, our certificates and experience hardly count and luck does not shine on everybody at the same time).

No matter what you do in Nigeria, Accepting the lottery offer is the best thing that can happen to you as the choice to travel in and out of America and the world traveling advantages it brings can never be bought with money.

If its possible, some people will buy it for 10 million Naira without looking back.

There are very salient challenges but its worth every inch of the struggle.

WELCOME TO HOUSTON, WELCOME TO AMERICA.

Now i can truly welcome myself to America, having done with ALL my documentation processes.

1. GREEN CARD 30th day ( delivered 21st day but was returned due to incomplete address ).

2. Social Security Card 25th day ( having told to return to SS office after 21 days in US....).

3. Applied for State ID and Drivers License having told to return after 30 days in the US and Scheduled for Behind the Wheel test 28th May at the DPS office( not learners permit as advised by veterans in America who even took a bet with me that I WILL FAIL THE BEHIND THE WHEEL TEST ).

4. Took and pass the Computer test same day i applied for the Drivers license and got my State ID same day ( plastic copy came in the mail after 10 days ).

5. Since i drive very well before i left Naija, I walk around the streets on regular basis and watch drivers observe the various traffic signals and rules, read the traffic handbook and research on the internet using various YOU TUBE VIDEOS available in preparing for the test.

6. 28th May , i was at the DPS office for my Behind the wheel test and I PASSED CLINICALLY ( without attending any driving school or previous behind the wheel training from anyone in America ). I was given a print out copy while i expect the plastic copy in less than 2 weeks.

LESSON 1. I noticed there are too many negative thoughts from those we refer to as " VETERANS " in the US, most especially those who find things very hard / difficult when they arrived the US in their days ( with or without genuine documents ). They tend to limit the extent of how far we can go as new immigrant with " LIMITED OR NO EXPERIENCE " of the American system.

LESSON 2. Not all those who live in America actually knows America as i was shocked in learning that majority of the rules and procedures i read on the internet was very true while majority of the ideas been sold to me here by those who are suppose to know ( 10 - 35 yrs in the American system ) are not only false but lack substance in its entirety.

LESSON 3. Never associate or listen to anyone who rather than encourage you in achieving a mission, discourage you by giving you million reasons why such can not be done. There are too many negativity thoughts in our peoples mind here in America and such are capable of undermining the successes of intelligent, educated and forward looking immigrants who left Naija with the will and mission to succeed in America.

LESSON 4. Survival in America is based on the power of information, which is readily available on the internet. Learn to research very vigorously for information, make calls to information's numbers and get first hand information from the source and not rely on HEAR SAY.

If you are convinced beyond reasonable doubt you can achieve a feat, go ahead and give it a try ( having made necessary preparations and caution taken ), you are better of failing at the first attempt than not trying at all for the fear of failure or result of discouraging tales from those around you.

HUMAN WISDOM IS LIMITED BUT WITH GOD, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE.
