Travel / Russian Passenger Jet Crashes Outside Moscow, Killing All On Board by Fineman2: 2:55pm On Jul 12
A Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane crashed Friday outside Moscow, killing all three crew members on board, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

The crash reportedly happened during a test flight, when no passengers were on board.

Authorities are investigating what caused the fatal incident.

The crash comes after a series of issues with Russia’s flagship plane, which was developed by the Russian aerospace company Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and was the first all-new commercial Russian aircraft produced after the end of the Soviet Union.

In May 2012, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 jet was on a demonstration flight in Indonesia when it crashed into Mount Salak, killing all 45 people aboard.

Then, in May 2019, 41 people died after an Aeroflot Superjet burst into flames after an emergency landing just after taking off from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.

Idiot!

You’re a very DUMB juvenile delinquent. Very thick in the head and absolutely bereft of knowledge and intelligence.

You need to return to primary school and begin afresh because all the efforts your father made trying to educate you in the past were apparently wasted.

Being daft and stupidly arrogant at the same time is disgusting 🤮.

You’re obviously poorly educated. Calabar is the most “Southeastern city” in Nigeria. Basic geography should inform you about that. But heck, politically, they say it’s in South south.

I could have ignored your post, but you calling facts nonsense while you’re the ignorant one is quite repulsive.

Cuba, I visited in 2008 so a while ago buy I'd like to imagine that it remains largely unchanged considering the fact that even at time, the 60's vibe was still quite visible in Havana.

What drew me to Cuba? I love Latin culture, the dance, music especially bachata ( you should hear me murdering Spanish songs on my playlist🤣), and the language. Plus their recent history with communism was fascinating, to see how the country stagnated after falling out with US post Castro.

There was a lot of poverty, with a distinct lack of access to basic amenities, things were very dated since there was no international trade( at least not to my knowledge) and no real industries. But we know the history of how things became so, so it was an interesting juxtaposition to see the impact of communism in a place that looked like paradise.

I'll admit that my knowledge of the transatlantic slave trade back then was non-existent so I did not have the opportunity to experience it from that context. But I did notice that they had groups of what they called Shango worshippers..so I connected the dots.

What is interesting in those places ( the Caribbean islands) is that you come across people that bear nigerian names, without having a clue that that is a throwback to their forebears. I met a Jamaican in Jamaica ( born, bred, no recent african ancestors) named Nneka, who had no clue it was a Nigerian name, never mind Igbo.

I'm going to reread your post on slave trade, ( I need to digest it) and would love if you have some links to share for further reading. I note that you mentioned Haiti, and as it happens, I'll be going to Dominican Republic in November ( which is the other half of the island) so thank you and gods that made you post this. It will add another flavour to my trip.😁

@ my username, it's a nickname given to me by sister. What about yours? When I see yours I always think Conquistador...aaaaaaand we are back to all things latin😜😜
Whoa! In 2008... That was a long time ago @Shaybebaby. Indeed, as of the time you visited communist Cuba, the biggest island in the Caribbean was still largely trapped in the 1950s-like era with those old 1950s and 1960s American cars. Ever since former President Barack Obama officially visited Cuba in March of 2016, things have vastly improved with a lot of gentrification of parts of Old Havana going on. Most of the old weather-beaten buildings really just need fresh coats of colourful paint and voila, the buildings come off looking really "sexy." In the year 2001, I remember that the past Ooni of Ife (Oba Okunade Sijuade) before the current Ooni of Ife (Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi) officially visited Cuba on the invitation of Fidel Castro to sign economic and cultural agreements and to see the many descendants of Yorubas (many male members of Yoruba royal families from different kingdoms were also captured as prisoners of wars in the 1800s and deported on those Spanish, Portuguese, and American slave ships to the Americas) who were taken to Cuba and the Black and White adherants of the Yoruba religion. The day the Oba (King) and his entourage landed in a plane in Havana was the day heavy rains started falling in Cuba in 2001 after a severe drought that lasted for several months. "Guess what? Afro-Cubans saw the Ooni's visit from Nigeria as a blessing from the
Orishas (Yoruba deities) and a sign that what their Yoruba ancestors told them about the mystical powers of the Oonis of Ife is true."

So, did you go to Cuba as a solo traveler OR were you part of a travel group? I feel your vibe right there in "near-absolute" terms on what made you gravitate towards a Cuban vacation as indicated in your post. I want YOU to also share with me some of your favorite "Bachata" music tracks from your playlist on this thread or on the NL Music Section thread. I'd like to immerse myself in that genre of Cuban "Bachata" music while taking a pleasant walk and/or car ride along the Malecon seawall.

There's indeed a gravitation pull for me towards the Latin-American culture especially the Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Carribean culture varieties. The music genres and sounds from the great Lucumi exponent, Lazoro Ros of Cuba who passed on in 2005, Orishas (my favorite Cuban rap and hip-hop group since the early 2000s), Camila Cabello, Carlos Santana, are truly stellar and evoke a feeling of oneness with Cuba! "A lo Cubano."

I'll bet that YOU work in the travel industry or you've got an international career path for you to have already "ticked" Cuba, Jamaica, and other places on your "travel list" of intensely cultural and fun places to visit in the Carribean! You know, I like your sense of adventure.

With reference to the Dominican Republic, I've studied their ancestry DNA results in the past from majorly online sources and a lot of them individually have caramel skin complexions due to their mixed African, Native American, and Spanish descent as shown by the DNA test results. Any Black African person you see in DR is most likely a long-time Haitian immigrant. An African-American lady who is also well-traveled told me that when she visited the Dominican Republic and lodged in a hotel, she developed a sustained upset tummy after eating a meal that contained vegetable salad. So, you have to be on guard to ensure that what you consume is well washed and NOT half-cooked.

So, right BELOW, I have 3 out of all the downloaded videos in my "travel archives" on the Dominican Republic for some years now that I'll share with you here so that you can see things as they are in terms of race relations and more.

1] The FIRST video here will be a revealing the relationship between Haitians and Dominican Republic citizens (to see the full Dominican perspective and discrimination towards Haitians, you have to watch the YouTube video from the time stamp of 7 mins out of the 15 mins long video. Haiti is ALSO experiencing a prolonged and vicious gang warfare right now in the capital city and nearby towns which started years back but it has further escalated right into the posh neighborhoods of the capital city with mass sexual assaults on women and kidnappings for ransom as of this 2024! A wise person or tourist would have to PERISH the thought of quickly dashing into Haiti from the Dominican Republic. It's wild out there!

2] Second, Norberis R. is a Dominican female entrepreneurs and travel YouTuber you can check up on here. She and her African-American husband (James) moved back to DR about 2 years ago from Florida in the United States and I've been watching her tips on using Dominican Spanish and visiting DR which meshes right into your next trip to DR as well. She and James dropped their latest video 2 days ago so I'll recommend that you watch that second video below FIRST before watching the older video here.

This is one of the BEST archival sources I've used for years to gain useful insights into the trans-Atlantic slave trade voyages and it contains the database of the liberated African and their names, ethnicities, the names of the infamous slave ships they were liberated from by the British Royal Navy Squadrons off the coast of West Africa, and the final region of destination in the Americas.

I've still got a vast archive of advanced resources on the trans-Atlantic slave trade but I'll stop here to avoid information overload. The main thrust should be to take one bite at a time.

First time was October 10, 2022. I was traveling to Japan, Tokyo precisely to do my masters having won the Japanese MEXT scholarship. It was an all-expenses paid trip. I took off from Abuja via Turkish airways by 11 pm in the night direct to Istanbul (about 6:30min) flight. When we were undergoing check at the Abuja airport, it was like as if it's a film. I could remember all the scholarship rejections I have been getting since finishing nysc in 2015, including the construction sites in Onitsha where I used to do labour work despite being the best graduating student of my cohort. Everything seemed like a movie when after the check, we kept on being told to move from one location to another to wait for flight time. While seating down with other travellers, I was full of thanksgiving in my mind, and I knew it was just grace. When I entered the plane, my god, I nearly cried. But the multitude of people coming in made me realise it's a normal thing. I sat beside the window with one guy travelling to Turkey with his father. When the plane moved, I didn't know that it was going up in the air untill the whole buildings begin to look so tiny while I looked down. I said in my mind good bye naija. I remembered my mother, my brother and friends who probably will be waiting for the morning to set out for hustling. As the plane kept on moving, the beautiful air hostess began to move something and my guy told me they will be serving us food. I laughed and was so happy. I ate all the things and said yest when the air hostess asked if I still care for more drink. Suddenly we began to see only clouds. We got to Istanbul very early in the morning. I laid over for 17 hrs before boarding from Istanbul to Tokyo. While in the Turkish airport, I was hopping from one restaurant to another, trying to finish 100usd I brought out from the money with me but it refused to finish. When we finally set off to Tokyo, they served us food twice. It was a long journey and while people beside me slept many times, I was awake and watching the clouds. I saw from the small screen places we have crossed and getting to(Bhutan, Azerbaijan, South Korea, china etc) when we finally landed in Tokyo, I nearly shout seeing the magnificence if the Haneda airport. I began to remember all those who ruled Nigeria and the depth of wickedness in them. At the airport, I also went through thorough check being a Nigerian. They told me to empty all the food stuffs and clothes. I gladly did and was eager to do more for them. They finished their checking and thanked me for cooperating with them. They asked if I want work permit. I said yes and they directed me to an office where I got it immediately. I slept in the airport instead of wasting money lodging hotel since Tokyo is one of the safest cities. In the morning, I asked for direction and followed instructions on how to get to my school via train. I got to my school around 10:30 in the morning. The student exchange division received me and said they have been expecting my arrival. They led me to my room in the school dorm. I began to thank God and remembered all the experiences I went through in Nigeria.
Right now, I am in the process of finishing my masters and have been admitted for PhD in same school and scholarship. Also, I got another masters admission and scholarship in California and now, am confused as to which choice to follow.
May God bless the effort of every Nigerian trying to become better in life.

My first flight was in early 2023, I was going to embark on an international trip for the first time later in the year but because I have not been on a plane before I was told to do test run on how it is to be on a plane. I did airpeace from lagos to owerri and back, it was pretty regular for me except when it took off from the ground where my ears were stuffed but I kept opening my mouth to yarn to clear my stuffed my ears and I sat by the window side so I can see the clouds and take pictures cause it was a morning flight. My second trip was my first international flight with a fresh passport with no travel history, a non stop flight from lagos to Washington DC which was at midnight, I had the window seat and it was a 3 person per role seat, the third person of the middle seat was not available so I had enough space, normal as the first flight but a bigger plane with lots of seats and better service. I slept through the flight of 12hrs and only wake up to eat which we are served 3 times for the duration of the trip, got to my destination in the morning and everything went smooth. I continued to my next flight which was 4hrs before I got to my destination.

My first time traveling by air in Nigeria was a mix of excitement and nerves. I was flying from Lagos to Abuja. The anticipation built up as I arrived at the bustling Murtala Muhammed International Airport. After checking in and going through security, I found myself marveling at the planes on the tarmac.Boarding the aircraft was surreal. As the plane took off, the city below shrank into a beautiful patchwork. The smooth flight was a pleasant surprise, with the cabin crew ensuring everyone was comfortable. Seeing the clouds up close and the expansive views below was breathtaking.Landing in Abuja, I felt a sense of accomplishment and was eager for more air travel experiences. That first flight not only marked the beginning of many more journeys but also a newfound appreciation for aviation.

Hello good day. Please I have few questions to ask with respect to the schorlarhip.

1. Is the funding enough to sustain beneficiaries throughout the program, especially if they are not working.

2. Does the schorlarhip also give room for beneficiaries to work while schooling?

May God bless the effort of every Nigerian trying to become better in life.

wow nice read!! Your story is similar to mine but mine wasn't in the academics line. God bless you. I'd advise you continue with your PhD, you can always move to the U.S or any country you wish with it. Best of luck!!

1982. Fokker F-28 Aircraft belonging to Nigeria Airways. Flying from Enugu to Calabar with my parents. plane ran into bad weather and had to be diverted to Lagos after several failed attempts at landing. At the time, there was no MM2 Terminal. It was just the old General Aviation Terminal at the time.

That same aircraft later went down in November 1983 in a crash close to the Enugu Airport on a flight from Lagos, killing 53 passengers. That plane was only 8 years old at the time, showing that Nigeria Airways at the time had capacity to buy new aircraft.

The Fokker aircraft I was to learn many years later, had some safety issues when exposed to wet weather conditions and was eventually withdrawn from civilian aviation.

That's old man.

My first experience I pretended like a pro.

My best experience would have to be “one gigantic airbus” experience via emirates to Dubai. That flight was yummy and magical. One of my fav scenes of that particular flight was how the pilot hovered around burjkhalifa and all the passengers had to look UP the windows unlike the traditional down to see the beautiful night scenery.
Turned out it’s the plane windows doing the magic like we were flying upside down!
The windows had a button to blur the glass incase of sunlight , instead of normal manual shutters

….can never forget that one flight in a hurry

Let me just copy it from one of my previous posts.

In my JSS1, my school took me and my schoolmates on an excursion to an airport. We were not allowed to enter an airplane because of 911 attack. But years later, I travelled by air.

The first flight I boarded was a local one. No family member or friend to guide me. I didn't know how and where to go when I entered the airport. I saw a place marked "Departure" (entrance) and took the route. I got to a scanning point and was searched and scanned. I asked a random worker on uniform a question and he pointed to the ticketing stand of the company I was to use. The rest was easy to detect and follow until boarding time. I saw my seat number on my ticket but didn't know how to locate the seat when I entered the plane. I didn't see number on any seat. I didn't know that the seat numbers are on the roof (should I call it ceiling?), not on the seats. I asked an air hostess who gave me a strange look before directing me to check the roof part above the seats. My first experience of turbulence (galloping in air 😀) scared me.

Another funny experience was when a hostess pushing trolley around to pack wastes after the passengers had had snacks got to my side, I myself trashed the wraps of my snacks into a waste container on the trolley and the hostess gave me a strange look. I then observed and noticed that other passengers were relaxed and she herself was picking the trashes from the trays, meaning I shouldn't have bothered myself to do the trashing myself. That was it. After then, I have travelled by air to 3 countries without difficulties in navigating through airports.

One of the things I have learnt from travelling by air is that the bigger an airplane is, the more comfort the airplane offers. For most small airplanes, no enough space for your legs, and you have to stretch your hands to the ceiling to adjust AC, turn light off or on and to press call button. But in most of bigger airplanes, you do the operations on a touchscreen in your front, and you have more space for your legs. You can't (or let me say you are not allowed to) recline your seat in some small airplanes.

I don learn somethings sha 😄

That was in 2005 to South Africa, it was an awesome experience, though the airline I boarded was Cameronian Airline, people refer to it as Labalaba ( butterfly) grin🦋.

There's always an impact on the Airplane whenever there's turbulence, and me as first timer on the plane was very scared, but thereafter I was a master grin

First flight ever:

Lagos to Abuja (Max Air) 2022
I entered the plane excitedly. I was meant to seat on a Seat E. But was so carried away I sat on Seat F so I can have a window view. The original owner of the seat came and drew my attention to the fact that I have her seat. Within a second, she just waived - a signal that she was ok exchanging seat with me.

Time to buckle my belts, and I realised I couldn't figure it out. I had to turn to my neighbour again, who by now knew I was a first time flier by my anxiety over figuring the belt. She gestured to me on how to fix the belt and I did accordingly.

I was really excited to see just how beautiful abuja's landscape was from the air.

First International Flight.
Lagos to Atlanta USA. (Delta Airlines) 2022

I entered the massive Airbus A300 series double aisle plane and could not ignore the huge disparity between a local flight and Intl flight experience.
The plane was rugged, the air conditioning was perfect. Everything about the flight was beautiful.

I didn't get a window seat, so. after take off I searched out the hostesses and relocated myself to window seat. Even though I didn't see the lift off from Lagos. I couldn't imagine missing the touch down Atlanta.

It was soooo beautiful! The lightning, highways of Atlanta are so nice! Touching down, we hovered in the air for a while before we finally touched down. Exciting experience!

Had my first experience over a decade ago from Lagos to asaba in an AERO Contractor aircraft. It was prayer galore. My seat was by the window, It was useless cos I had to shut off my eyes during take off and landing due to fear. The plane was so noisy that when we finally landed, I disembarked with blocked ear.

Flown several times after that, although with less prayers inflight. (had encountered storm inflight once Enugu-Lagos route, was really scary).
