Education / MBBS Admission In India: A Complete Overview For Aspiring Doctors by Metaeducation01(m): 7:39am
Pursuing an MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) degree in India is a dream for many aspiring doctors. With a robust healthcare system and world-class medical education, India offers numerous opportunities for students aiming to embark on a career in medicine. However, understanding the MBBS admission process, eligibility criteria, and entrance exams is essential for securing a seat in one of the country’s prestigious medical institutions.

1. MBBS in India: An Introduction
MBBS is an undergraduate program designed to train students in various medical fields, including surgery, pediatrics, pathology, and general medicine. The duration of the MBBS course in India is 5.5 years, which includes one year of mandatory internship in hospitals or healthcare institutions. The program is regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

2. Eligibility Criteria for MBBS Admission in India
Before applying for MBBS, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Educational Qualification: Candidates must have completed their 10+2 education (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as their main subjects. They should have scored at least 50% in their qualifying exams (45% for reserved categories).

Minimum Age: The candidate should be at least 17 years old at the time of admission or by December 31 of the admission year.

Nationality: Indian nationals, NRIs, OCIs, and PIOs are eligible to apply. Some institutions also accept foreign students.

3. Entrance Exams for MBBS Admission
Admission to MBBS programs in India is based primarily on entrance exams. The most prominent exam is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), which is mandatory for admission to all medical colleges, whether government or private.

NEET-UG: Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), NEET is a national-level exam held annually. It tests the students on their knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany & Zoology). NEET scores are used for admissions to both MBBS and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programs.

AIIMS and JIPMER: Until 2019, these institutes conducted their entrance exams. However, since 2020, admission to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is also done through NEET.

4. MBBS Admission Process in India
The admission process for MBBS in India generally follows these steps:

Step 1: NEET Registration: Aspiring candidates must register for NEET-UG through the official NTA website, pay the application fee, and download the admit card.

Step 2: Appear for NEET-UG: The NEET exam is usually held in May, and students must attempt it at designated centers across India.

Step 3: NEET Results & Rank: After the exam, the NTA releases the results and the All India Rank (AIR) of candidates.

Step 4: Counseling & Seat Allocation: Based on NEET scores, students participate in the counseling process. The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) conducts counseling for 15% All India Quota seats, while state authorities manage the remaining 85% of seats for state-level counseling. Students can select the colleges based on their rank and availability of seats.

Step 5: Final Admission: Once the counseling process is complete, candidates are allotted seats. They must report to the respective medical college and complete the admission formalities.

5. Top Medical Colleges in India
India has a wide array of government and private medical colleges. Some of the most reputed institutions include:

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi
Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore
Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune
Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi
King George’s Medical university (KGMU), Lucknow
Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi
6. MBBS Fees Structure
The fees for MBBS programs in India vary based on the type of institution:

Government Medical Colleges: Fees in government colleges are highly subsidized, ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000 per year. They are more affordable, but securing admission is more competitive due to limited seats.

Private Medical Colleges: Fees in private institutions range from ₹5 lakhs to ₹25 lakhs per year. Some institutions also offer management quota seats, which have higher fees.

7. Scholarships and Financial Assistance
Several scholarships are available for deserving and financially weak students. Some of the popular scholarships for MBBS aspirants include:

PM Narendra Modi Scholarship for Medical Students
AISEE Scholarship
Nationwide Education and Scholarship Test (NEST)
8. Career Prospects After MBBS
After completing MBBS, graduates can either pursue higher studies (MD, MS, or diploma courses) or start practicing as general physicians. Many students also appear for the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) to practice medicine abroad. India offers a wide range of career opportunities in both the public and private healthcare sectors, as well as the option to specialize in various fields.

Conclusion
MBBS admission in India is a rigorous process that requires dedication, preparation, and a clear understanding of the steps involved. For aspiring doctors, securing a seat in a reputed medical college is the first step toward a fulfilling career in healthcare. With proper guidance and preparation, students can navigate the admission process and fulfill their dream of becoming medical professionals.

Education / Sa'adatu Rimi University Now Degree-awarding College Of Education - Kano Govt by jeremy85: 9:33pm On Sep 19
Kano Govt approves conversion of Sa'adatu Rimi university to degree-awarding college of education

The Kano State Executive Council has approved the conversion of the Sa'adatu Rimi university of Education to Sa'adatu Rimi College of Education and maintained that it would remain a degree-awarding institution.

The decision to convert the university to a college of education was taken at the 18th sitting of the state’s executive council held on Sept. 18, 2024.

The state government said the development was aimed at enhancing the quality of education and maintaining effective management in the state’s higher education sector.

According to a statement signed by Baba Dantiye, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday, the decision followed an extensive consultation with key stakeholders.

It said the decision also followed the recommendation of a high-powered committee appointed by the state government to examine the university's status and devise a way to enhance its academic quality.

It further stated that the committee's findings highlighted concerns from the academic and non-academic communities and other stakeholders regarding the potential negative impact of the initial college transition into a university

“These concerns include the risk of losing experienced lecturers, salary-related conflicts, and administrative challenges that could hinder the institution's operational efficiency.

“The Council noted that several similar institutions across the country have successfully operated as colleges of education while offering a variety of degree programmes, without transforming into university status, under the “dual mode” introduced by the NCE-regulated body.

“The conversion is expected to have no adverse effects on students, as the current undergraduates in the college will continue with their studies.

“Also, the certificate of the university will be safely kept for future use.

“Moreover, the institution will continue to offer both its traditional courses and additional degree programmes, in line with its newly expanded academic mandate,” the statement read.

Consequently, Gov. Abba Yussuf has approved the dissolution of university management with immediate effect and directed the vice chancellor to hand over the affairs of the former university to his most senior deputy, pending further announcements.

“This strategic decision underscores the Kano State Government’s commitment to ensuring the stability and continued growth of its higher education institutions while addressing the concerns of stakeholders to maintain academic excellence and operational efficiency,” it read.

In Feb. 2023, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved the licensing and upgrading of Sa'adatu Rimi College of Education to Sa'adatu Rimi university of Education towards the end of the previous administration.

Career / E-learning In Nigeria: Will Technology Be Able To Fix Youth Unemployment? by LONDONACADEMY: 2:36pm On Sep 19
What is the solution to reduce the unemployment rate in Nigeria which is said to have hit 33%? It remains to be seen whether the coming of e-learning will go beyond promotion of educational studies or it is just an alternative to say that nothing can be done. Having thousands of young Nigerians drenching themselves in androgynous courses is the opportunity that digital education presents forth. But there are over burdens related to this promise, the major one being poor internet connectivity and expensive internet data. Is it possible that instead of narrowing the gaps, e-learning may rather widen the existing gulf between the urban and rural Nigeria?

Digital Divide. More instead of less?

In Nigeria where poor internet facilities and expensive data serve as a big drawback. The Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) reports indicate that internet access has only slightly improved because a little over fifty percent of the population is connected to the service with cracks separating the rural from the urban residents. Where places like Lagos and Abuja with their crowdedness witness many people within areas that allow them to easily acquire broad band connections within reasonable period that makes e-learning practical. As it is today in Nigeria and indeed across many developing nations skimming the surface of e-learning will suffice at best as e-learning remains a dream, while all rural areas have no spine. The studies bring out a very worrying concern. Is it that e-learning will only enhance existing ills rather than provide a solution to the problem of unemployment?

E-Learning's Potential and Pitfalls - The Promise of Digital Skills

Using platforms such as Coursera https://www.coursera.org/ or London Intercultural Academy (LIA)https://liacademy.co.uk/, for instance, is an alternative to the conventional schooling system, which most of the times does not meet current labour market requirements. The Digital Economy Agency of Nigeria (DEAN) also reported that training for digital skills can generate as many as 2 million additional employments within a span of ten years, in turn helping reduce youth unemployment.

Developing software for companies situated in Lagos transitioned from being jobless to earning an income when he started taking coding online courses. This proves how powerful e-learning system is.

The Andela Fellowship (the technical leadership program) has educated thousands of developers in Nigeria utilizing remote instructional techniques. Many of these developers are employed in foreign technology companies, thereby proving the success of the program.

Systemic Failures

Yet many e-learning ventures too have not recorded success. Most of them are faced by problems like lack of consistent electricity, erratic internet as well as expensive data plans by the online learners. Such systemic challenges inhibit their efforts to finish the courses and earn the respective certifications.

Statistic: Paradigm Initiative conducted a study in 2020 and had observed that unreliable internet is a reason why 73 percent of Nigerian youths returned to the problem of getting the needed online education.

Systemic Failure: It has been observed that many government efforts such as the National Open university of Nigeria (NOUN) in trying to apply ICT in the education system have not been able to scale up nor inadequate in reach.

Challenges and Opportunities

Challenges

Infrastructure Deficit: Closing the gap in terms of internet penetration and power supply within the country is an important task that has to be undertaken in Nigeria. In the absence of good internet connectivity, a significant proportion of young Nigerians are unable to benefit from the opportunities presented in online learning.

High Data Costs: Nigeria has one of the most expensive data in Africa and even across the other parts of the world. It is important to implement strategies that reduce the costs of initiating e-learning to reach wider populations.

Digital Literacy: Many youths lack fundamental ICT skills, hence, their incapacity to use proper e-learning platforms does not help them in their quest for knowledge.

Opportunities

Government Initiatives: Improved access to the internet and steep improvements in digital skills provisions are some of the recent government plans such as the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy which offers favorable conditions for the preservation of equality in e-learning opportunities.

Public-Private Partnerships: The governments, cyber companies, and other charitable organizations can pool resources for infrastructural development and provision of reduced costs for data hence e-learning would not be a nightmare for a subsistence family.

Content Through a Local Lens: Adapted foreign e-learning systems to the Nigerian environment with provision of courses in local languages, and encourage employment can increase relevance and interest.

Expert Opinions

Dr. Ifeoma Amobi is a technology expert in education who contends that “E-learning is so powerful that it has the ability to change the education system in Nigeria for the good of the society. Sadly, one can argue, if these economic and infrastructural issues are not properly managed, the worst hit will be the poorest of the poor, always at the bottom of the economic pyramid”.

In contrast, Alade Odunayo, policy analyst, reprimands “When we talk about e-learning, let it be clear that we are not talking about the silver bullet. There are certain deep-seated reforms that need to be undertaken all at the same time i.e. the reasons for the surfeit of scientists in Nigeria with very little appreciation for their skills and the deplorable state of the economy”.

Future Outlook: The Path forward

As far as e-learning is concerned in Nigeria, it appears that the anticipated gains are most likely to be accompanied by many challenges. For instance,

Predictable Curve: Many ‘all satellite’ solutions will be enhanced with other innovative means of tackling the problem such as learning offline.

Optimistic Scenario: Due to strategic government interventions and massive infrastructural investment, e-learning would rather supplement more constructively than what it has been perceived towards alleviating youth unemployment by inducing a more appropriate labor supply.

Pessimistic Scenario: The effects of failing to address underlying structural challenges include the risk that ‘e’ might only become another additional resource that only the elite have access to while inequalities persist instead of being alleviated.

Calling for Greater Collaboration

In summation, while information and communications technology present great opportunities in solving the youth employment crisis, especially in Nigeria, difficulties still exist. Business leaders, government stakeholders and educators have an imperative need to come together to improve broadband quality, lower bandwidth pricing, and create a culture of Internet usage. In this regard, they will promote the value of e-learning in equipping the youths with relevant workforce development skills.

The advancement of the Nigerian economy in the 21st Century rest and hinges on the application of the tools of technology responsibly and inclusively that will not lockout any one Nigerian youth. E-learning can therefore be an enabler of Nigeria’s dreams for its youngsters, but only if we invest in addressing the connectivity divide and promoting a society where everyone can flourish.

Distance learning in Benin republic made easy. There are now online courses offered in the Republic of Benin. As we have always stated, we are rewriting the rules and reforming the educational system throughout Africa, particularly in the Benin Republic. for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Of course, not all classes are available online, but some are. The distance learning programs offered in Benin are listed below.

Online learning, often known as e-learning, is a way to study remotely from any location without having frequent in-person interactions with an instructor. Instead of interacting in the classroom, this learning format allows students and teachers to do so via phone, email, and other electronic communication.

It is a defined teaching and learning framework created especially for distance learning in Benin Republic. Distance learning offers chances in situations where it is impossible to run traditional schooling due to its lower cost and geographic limitations. Employees and students who struggle with distance or schedules will both gain from distant learning because it is essentially available everywhere at any time.

ADVANTAGES OF DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM IN BENIN REPUBLIC

The fundamental benefit of distance learning in Benin Republic is that you may schedule your classes around your personal and professional obligations.

-In most cases, you can choose your own study schedule.

-You get to decide where and when you study. You can earn a degree from any university in the globe, regardless of where you reside.

-Students could discover that they acquire practical, transferable abilities, like planning and research, just like with a full-time degree.

-A full-time degree is more expensive than the remote learning courses.

The demerit is that you won't get to enjoy the camaraderie of living on a campus and often interacting with other students (some of us might be too busy to miss this because we are too busy with work and family )However, frequent (daily) online communication with tutors and participation in virtual forums, aid groups, and discussion rooms can help prevent loneliness and feelings of isolation. We now provide devoted support for our students' distance learning programs in the Benin Republic available.

Education / Benin Republic Educational System: A Comprehensive Overview 2024 by Campusbenin(m): 4:30pm On Sep 18
Benin Republic Educational System

The quality of Benin republic education system has been a concern in recent years, with low enrollment rates and high dropout rates at both the primary and secondary levels. The government has implemented various initiatives to improve the education system, such as the construction of new schools and the training of teachers.

However, limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of qualified teachers continue to be major challenges for the education sector in Benin. Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to improving the Benin Republic education system and increasing access to quality education for all citizens.

Benin has abolished tuition prices and is implementing the suggestions made by its Educational Forum in 2007. Its educational system used to be paid for. The net primary enrollment rate for 2018 was 97%.

The gross enrolment rate in secondary school has significantly increased over the past 20 years, rising from 21.8 percent in 2000 to 59 percent in 2016, with male students making up 67.1 percent and female students making up 50.7 percent. Benin Republic education system

The student/teacher ratio increased due to a rapid rise in enrolment from 36:1 in 1990 to 53:1 in 1997, however it has since reduced once again to 39:1 in recent years (2018). The gross enrolment rate for higher education in 2018 was 12.5%.

The overall adult literacy rate in 2018 was 42.4%, which is much lower than the rates in Nigeria (62%), Togo (63.7%), and other nearby countries. Only 31.1% of women in Benin who are 15 years of age or older are literate, compared to 51.9% of males and 69.8% of women in this age group. [6]

According to the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI), Benin barely satisfies 77.6% of the requirements for the right to education, depending on the nation's level of income. HRMI examines the rights to both elementary and secondary education in order to break down the right to education.

Benin is reaching 96.5% of what should be achievable based on its resources (income) for basic education, but only 58.8% for secondary education while taking the country's income level into account.

The Benin Republic educational system
is structured in a 6-4-3-3-4 format:

Primary Education: 6 years (ages 6-11)

Junior High School: 4 years

Senior High School: 3 years

Bachelor’s Degree: 3 years

Master’s Degree: 4 years

Graduates with a bachelor's degree have the option of starting a profession right away or going on to graduate school. A bachelor's degree continues to be one of the most popular degree options for individuals planning to attend college. A bachelor's degree can be earned in a wide range of subjects after four years of full-time study.

Master's programs in Benin Republic

A master's degree: what is it? In general, a master's degree is the first level of graduate education. Graduates must already have an undergraduate degree, which is typically a bachelor's degree, in order to apply for a master's degree. A master's degree typically takes between one and two years of full-time, continuous study. State and public universities both grant master's degrees.

PhD programs in Benin Republic

In many nations, a doctor of philosophy, or PhD, is the highest academic degree given out by a university. A student who has successfully finished all of their coursework, comprehensive examinations, and work on their thesis or dissertation is referred to as a postgraduate PhD student or doctorate student. Programs of study from every academic subject are eligible for a PhD. In many academic fields, having a PhD is a condition for work as a university professor, lecturer, researcher, or scientist. 'You made Bag distinction in various fields, some emerge overall best

Newly graduated medical doctors who are indigenes of Kogi State have expressed gratitude to former governor of the state, Yahaya Bello for making their dreams of completing their medical courses possible.

According to the fresh doctors, the immediate past governor came to their rescue when they thought all hope of becoming medical doctors was lost.

Publicly acknowledging the former Kogi State Governor for his role in supporting their medical education through a full scholarship, the medical professionals, who were part of the pioneer group transferred from Prince Abubakar Audu university (PAAU) to various universities across Nigeria after the loss of accreditation at their initial institution before the administration of former Gov. Bello, expressed their appreciation for the former governor’s intervention.

The graduates, transferred to Ebonyi State university, Kaduna State university, and Usman Danfodio university, Sokoto; highlighted the critical support they received from former governor Bello and the Kogi State Government.

According to them, the former governor covered all transfer and tuition fees and ensured they could complete their medical training without financial burden.

In a public letter addressed to the former governor, the students stated, “When we faced the unfortunate challenge of losing accreditation at our former institution, your divine emergence as Governor, swift intervention and the decision to transfer us to other medical schools were not just acts of leadership but of compassion and commitment to the future of Kogi State's healthcare sector.

"The efforts of your administration in ensuring that we were successfully transferred to institutions where we could complete our medical training is a testament to your dedication to education and the well-being of your citizens."

One of the graduates, Dr. Omeiza Abdulmaleek Usman, shared his gratitude, acknowledging the former governor's unwavering commitment to their education.

He also extended his appreciation to the Kogi State Government, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Secretary to the State Government, Dr (Mrs) Folashade Ayoade; former Vice Chancellors, Prof Hassan Isah and Prof Muhammed Abdulkadir Sanni; Prof Mariat Tenushe, former provost of the medical college, Prof Margaret Araoye.

They also thanked Prof Akogu Simon, Prof Edino, late Dr Emmanuel Busayo Agbana, Dr Omotosho and other management staff of PAAU for their efforts in facilitating the transfer process.

“Our success was made possible by the support of former Governor Yahaya Bello, who generously provided scholarships and covered our tuition and transfer fees. His belief in our potential has been crucial in achieving this milestone,” Dr Olugbemiro said.

Showering encomiums on Yahaya Bello, another beneficiary of the full scholarship, Dr. Edogbo Anthony thanked the former governor for the upgrade of various health facilities across the state, including the PAAU teaching hospital, as well as the construction of standard hospitals to meet the healthcare needs of the people of Kogi State.

The new medical doctors said Bello's philanthropic gesture had inspired a strong desire in them to give back to Kogi State and beyond.

In private messages on social media, the brand new doctors said their professors kept saying "Yahaya Bello will be proud of you".

One of them, Dr. Onimisi Benedict Simpa, won 11 out of the 20 prizes for the faculty at the Kaduna State university, emerging the overall best graduating student.

Dr. Anthony Edogbo, also from Kogi State, emerged the best student in Internal Medicine with a distinction, as well as Best Student in 600L
at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (Ebonyi State university).

At the Usman Danfodiyo university, another beneficiary of the full scholarship by the former Governor Yahaya Bello administration, Dr. Alfa Uredo Eunice, graduated with a Distinction in Surgery. Dr. Olugbemiro Peters also graduated with a Distinction in Surgery from the same university, among others.

Politics / Presidential Amnesty Scholarship Student Bags First Class In Law by ogugwa1992: 4:53pm On Sep 11
•••As 60 PAP Scholarship Students Make First Class Between 2016-2023

•••Excellent Academic Feats Excite Otuaro

A student on the scholarship scheme of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Kemien Egbekun, has graduated with a CGPA of 4.77 (first class degree) in Law at the Michael and Cecilia Ibru university (MCIU), Agbara-Otor, Delta State.

Two other students sponsored by the PAP, Oladapo Damilola and Toikumo Prosper, also made a second-class upper-division grade in Law at the same MCIU. They all participated in the university's 6th convocation ceremony on September 6, 2024.

No fewer than 60 students sponsored by the PAP made first class in different competitive disciplines between 2016 and 2023 at various partnering universities as confirmed by the Head of Education, Dr Charles Ariye.

The disciplines include electrical/electronics engineering, computer science, civil engineering, accounting, law, petroleum engineering, physics, international relations, chemistry, biochemistry, political science, medical laboratory science, microbiology, industrial chemistry, among others.

Though the scorecard for 2024 is being awaited from the various institutions, Egbekun and her colleagues have by their laudable academic achievements, added to the constantly growing number of the PAP scholarship scheme beneficiaries who had scored similar excellent grades in various courses of study at partnering institutions.

Meanwhile, the Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr Dennis Otuaro, has expressed delight over the sterling academic performances of students sponsored by the Programme.

He spoke on the heels of the meritorious academic feats of the Arogbo-Ijaw-born Egbekun and others, according to a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Igoniko Oduma, on Wednesday.

Otuaro said his administration was encouraged by the quality of academic grades achieved by the PAP scholarship students, which had become a part of the success stories of the programme in the advancement of human capital development in the Niger Delta.

He stressed that their creditable academic performances were a testament to the well-intentioned educational objectives of the scholarship scheme and the mandate of the PAP for the region.

Otuaro commended the PAP graduates for recording first-class and second-class upper-division grades in their disciplines, noting that they had made the Federal Government, the PAP Office, their communities and the region proud.

He challenged current PAP scholarship students in the various partnering institutions to be spurred on by the admirable grades made by their predecessors to maintain the commendable trajectory.

The PAP boss attributed the worthy academic feats of PAP scholarship graduates to President Bola Tinubu's strong support for the Office.

He stressed that it conforms with his Renewed Hope Agenda of sustainable, peace, stability and development in the region.

He therefore thanked the president for his fatherly encouragement to the Office and his willingness to do more due to his genuine love for the people of the Niger Delta.

Otuaro said his administration was taking steps to ensure that more scholarship opportunities were created for deserving students.

He stated, "We are elated by the fantastic academic performances of the Presidential Amnesty Programme scholarship scheme students. Achieving such impressive grades as first-class and second-class upper division is no mean academic feat.

"These achievements reinforce the fact that the PAP is on the right track implementing its mandate. We are delighted and encouraged by this fact, and are taking appropriate steps to deepen efforts at achieving more in educational and vocational initiatives.

"We must thank President Bola Tinubu for his strong support for the programme and the undying love he has for the people of the Niger Delta through his Renewed Hope Agenda. He is committed to sustainable peace, stability and development in the region. He needs to be appreciated and encouraged also."
