Dr. jco:
please i need advice, i have been aspiring to study medicine in a federal university, this actually prompted me to apply for med/surg in UNN. after everything, unn offered me zoology which i did'nt want to study. while considering that; the school i choose as second choice out of applying sake finally offered me med/surg. my problem is that i don't like the fact that it is a state school which they just accredited last yr(imo state university) and i heard rumors that the teaching hospital is not that good. please should i consider the state school or should consider pre med. please i need answers. thanks

Hey boy, i am studying at imsu and i can tel u there is infrastructural decadence in every school and not only imsu. Studying is a thing of choice and interest it does not corelate with the name of school, am a product of imsu and i can compete favourably with my colleagues from other schools.meanwhile imsuth have accreditation since five years ago.

I have been coming across alot of articles on sleep recently and I am afraid that I am not sleeping enough. The side effects of inadequate sleep in those articles are really scary. Sir Lagusta( you are already a Doctor), how many hours per day did you use to sleep when you were in Medical school? Other Drs and Medical Students in the house, pls CONTRIBUTE. Thanks.

TYPES OF DOCTORS

Doctors, also called physicians, have an effect on everyone’s life. They treat people when they are sick or hurt. They give advice to patients to help keep them fromgetting sick. They bandage knees, prescribe medicine, sew up cuts, and operate on bones. They bring new babies into the world and comfort older people who are sick or dying. Some Doctors see all kinds of patients, and other Doctors only see patients with a particular illness or injury. There are even doctors who never see patients at all. In the United States alone, there are over a half-million Doctors. They all do different things, and they are all important in their own way.

Family Practice Doctors

Most people have a family Doctor. This is the person who sees and treats all members of the family. These Doctors are usually called family practice or primary care Doctors. They are trained to provide medical care to everyone from pregnant mothers to babies and adults. If their patients need further treatment, or need more specialized care, family practice Doctors may refer them to a specialist.
Some family practice Doctors work in large or medium-sized cities, where thereare a number of Hospitals and many physicians. Others, like Dr. Larry Curtis, are“country” or “rural Doctors,” who may be the only physician to serve an entire county of people. Country doctors work insmall, rural towns such as Driggs, Idaho, where Dr. Curtis has his medical practice. He says that he enjoys being a country Doctor because he feels at home in a small town and thinks of his patients as his friends. Also, he must deal with a wide variety of medical needs, as he explains: “At fall harvest, an injured farmer might not want to travel [to a distant town] for treatment. He might ask, ‘Sew me up quick, doc, so I can get back to work.’

Emergency Doctors

Many Doctors have regular office hours and see most of their patients during the daytime. This is not the case, however, with emergency room (ER) doctors. ER Doctors see patients at all hours of the day and night. Over 100 million people visit emergency rooms each year, for all kinds of reasons. ER doctors see patients for everything from broken bones to breathing problems, from food poisoning to pneumonia. In fact, there is no other type of doctor who sees such a variety of medical problems as an ER Doctor.
Some hospitals have different types of emergency rooms—for instance, those that fly. The MCG Health System in Augusta,Georgia, has a large emergency room on the ground and a smaller one in the air. The hospital owns a specially equipped helicopter that serves as a flying emergency room. It resembles a miniature hospital ER, and it is staffed with an ER Doctor and two other emergency medical professionals. When every second counts because a patient is seriously ill or injured, the three jump in with the pilot and take off in the “flying ER.”

Surgeons

Doctors who perform operations are called surgeons. Years ago almost all surgery was performed by general surgeons. As medicine became more advanced, surgery became more specialized. Today general surgeons perform many types of common surgeries such as removal of tonsils, appendix, or breast lumps and repairing hernias. However, there are also specialist surgeons who operate only on particular areas of the body.
Plastic surgeons repair body parts that are abnormal in some way, from injury, disease, or birth defects. They also perform “cosmetic” surgery on patients, which is surgery that improves a patient’s appearance. Several other types of surgeons include orthopedic surgeons, who operate on bones, joints, muscles, nerves, and tendons;neurosurgeons (brain surgeons) who operate on the brain and surrounding nerves; and pediatric surgeons, who perform surgery on children, from newborn babies to teenagers.
Some pediatric surgeons specialize in children’s Heart conditions, and are called pediatric heart surgeons. Dr. Tom Karl, of UCSF Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, is a well-known pediatric heart surgeon. During the summer of 2002, Dr. Karl traveled to Nicaragua with a team of health care professionals. While he was there, he and his team performed surgery on twenty children who were born with heart defects

Sleep is very important as we all know, but in Med.Sch something has to give. I discovered i couldnt cover much if i'm to adhere judiciously to the 6=8hrs minimum sleep time requirement per day.
The longest i can sleep is 4hrs per day and thats after classes from 6-10pm,any time after 10pm to 4am is for studying although with short breaks in between for internet stuff. It's almost impossible for me to sleep at night and i also find it difficult to study in the day time, so i do my sleeping in the evening and stay up all night. This routine works perfectly for me.

Quit worrying about whether you are getting enough sleep or not, sleep when you need to.
Just try to balance things up... even though i know there is no such thing as balance in med.sch/pract(sth always gives). sad sad or rather, just live with it.

If you ask me, this is the advice you need!
You just have to know yourself, i had a room-mate about a year ago who reads practically all through the nite, I mean even when she's sleeping, her laptop is open beside her and any attempt for her to just open her eyes, she starts reading. She'll sleep off after lyk 2 hours to wake up in 30 mins time again. She even had to be sleeping on the tiles, so she won't be able to sleep conveniently. On the other hand, nothing messes with my own sleep. embarassed embarassed I can count the number of times i've had to be awake for 6hours at a goal in the night before. Mind you, we were in the same class. That still didn't mess with my result and I was fine. As for me, nothing tampers with my sleep, play, nairaland, church services, movies etc...and I still pass my exams WELL! I have friends who are even in lower classes and doing easier stuffs than me who don't sleep, most especially when examz is approaching and they're fine. Do I judge those other people or seem dem as over-serious Abso-freaking-lutely NOT, if that is what they have to do to pass, then, so be it! Do I see myself as wasting my father's money Abso-freaking-lutely NOT, I'm trying my best by God's grace but i don't need 8 hours in a day to have my REALLY GOOD SCORE!

In conclusion, sweetie, do what you have to do to excel, but don't tamper with your health along the process.
GOOD LUCK! kiss

Lol at your roommate sleeping on tiles grin grin, she could use alarm clock actually.
I agree with what you wrote up there, people are wired differently. You just have to know what works for you and follow it.

My roomie doesn't study like i do, she considers my style "depressing" in her exact word, yet she does "very" well in school. I consider her very intelligent and i mean it. Why? because it takes her approximately two weeks of consecutive studying to cover up whatever it is that i spend three months studying(i'm not exaggerating)...,I'm a slow reader hence i take things bit by bit over a period of time(not really good with pressure/last minute rush),i need more time to get things done than she does. We've both come to term with the fact that we are different when it comes to studying style. If i choose to emulate her style, then im in for a real shocker shocked(na my result go tell me angry) and she on the other hand cant just cope with mine. The bottomline is****MAN KNOW THY SELF****, what works for A might not work for B.

meipsum1: I want to say a very big thank you to everybody that replied. You all have been helpful. I think I've got the drill now. @D bestdoc, thanks for allaying my fears. I now know that I am not the only one with this "depressing" style of study as your room mate called it. I'm almost like you. I sleep for like 4-5 hrs in a day, on an average day, I sleep for 5 hrs but when we have tests in view, for like 1 week to the test, I sleep for like 3-4 hrs a day. That was how I did throughout my 200L level and all was well. I am now in 300L, and I have started to note a decrease in my RETENTIVE MEMORY. Before now, I have a very great understanding capacity and a very, very high retentive memory, I read once and get it and I retain it for a very long time. But the retentive memory seems to be dwindling though the high understanding ability is still there. It was while I was googling for the cause of my dwindling retentive memory that I came across a post on sleep. It said one of the side-effects of inadequate sleep is that neurons start to misfire which inturn leads to forgetfulness amidst other scary side effects. I could live with other side effects but I couldn't afford to mess up my brain, I still need it for clinicals, residency e.t.c. So I was scared. That is why I asked the question I asked. But colleagues and senior colleagues, what could be responsible for a dwindling retentive memory. Thanks.

I don't think your lack of sleep for one year is the cause of your "memory dwindling"... it takes years for such things to dwindle to the stage of manifesting. Maybe your mind is not together or you're missing the method. I'll say it might be more of psychological than neuronal, KAPISH!
