NIGERIANS or Nigeria has no right to claim a land like bakasi because the question i keep on asking is this Nigeria Government happy that Bakasi is part of Nigeria with good life from the people that have Natural resources which contribute to the growth of the development of this country or what.
if history defines it that the land belongs to this country, it should be good if the people are treated equally like every Nigerian meanwhile it is paramount to note that , not every Nigerian really receive this equilibrium opportunity but we have to say the fact that the people of Basaki have be maltreated, humiliated and denied the fundamental rights as citizens of this country. and you most agree with me that it is because they (Bakasi people) have oil that is why we want them back to Nigeria, if that wasn't the case, Nigeria would have let them go.
DON'T FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU THINK YOU WILL ENJOY MOST AS A LEADER BUT FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT OF EVERY CITIZEN OF THIS COUNTRY.

stagger: There is no oil in Bakassi Peninsula landmass. The judgement of the ICJ gave the waters in the Tripartite continental shelf to Nigeria, and that is where the oil is. Why do you think the Nigerian government is not interested in pursuing the case?

We have the oil, Cameroun has the empty land mass. The ICJ judgement was about border readjustment between Nigeria and Cameroun, and the Bakassi Peninsula was only a part of it. A lot of land (and of course the oil-bearing waters) was given to Nigeria.

We need to be sure of the facts because 99% of the people posting here know NOTHING about the case. All Nigeria needs to do is to resettle the people displaced from the Bakassi landmass.

I guess insulting Yoruba food is supposed to change the fact that you are now cameroonian. If you like speak pang kang shang and whatever. Embrace your new citizenship and go and rest. Nama. grin grin grin. In 3 weeks you will get a new passport. If you as a people know you are not Cameroonian, why in 10yrs did you not present your case to the international courts? You are still boasting about oil. Nigeria obviously doesn't need it, take your arrogant attitude to cameroon and see if you will not be wiped out. That is why you are so desperate because no country will play naija politics with you. Go to Cameroon and lodge your complaint about oil and scholarship. Which food you get sef? Dog meat? Na why you dey para like animal. Lice don chop your brain.

But what about the fishing rights? Did we get those also? What about the human capital (the people themselves)? Aren't they assets as well? Don't you know that Bakassi, being a peninsula, is also a potentially strategic location for a naval base?

Man, Bakassi has so many advantages besides oil. Our leaders just don't see this.

Ehh...no. If Cameroun were to attack us , we would have that "naval base" sitting right there for Cameroun to attack.

If we follow your line of reasoning, it would follow that every port in Southern Nigeria (including Port Harcourt) would be vulnerable to external attack, right? Wrong.

Your post is based on an assumption that a naval base is simply a place for maintenance of ships. More than that, it is a launching post for naval patrols around surrounding waters. Thus in our case having a naval base will serve as a valuable stepping stone towards a future projection of our navy across the South Atlantic (maybe one day when we get our act together, we can do this). I don't see how Cameroon will DARE to attack Bakassi if we were to maintain a part of it as a fully fortified naval nase.

A naval base cannot (or rather should not) be left open to foreign invasion.

This Bakassi issue is really a painful one. Reading through all posts and comments, even thoae sarcastic ones, showed that Nigerians dont really agree with ICJ and Federal Government positions. But what we have all not considered is that land matter is all about people and politics and not legal frameworks. Therefore, consideration is first given to people before resources and all land politics are about people.

In the case of Bakassi, the Nigerian people who are now shouting and bringing "fresh facts" failed when it mattered most. The problem of Bakassi can be viewed from the following:

1. Responsibility of Nigerian Government
2. Duty of Nigerian People
3. International Politics

1. Responsibility of Nigerian Government: The Nigerian government have since the issue started up to the present time displayed gross irresponsibility towards Bakassi (land and people). This of course is a reflection of how Nigerian government treats its people.

This can be seen from the fact that since the so called ICJ judgment:

(a) not a single session was held in either of the houses of the National Assembly points to this act of irresponsibility.
(b) the Governor's forum has not made it one of their agnedas is a pointer of government recklessness
(c) not even a committee in the usual Nigerian style is commissioned to study the ICJ ruling and seek ways for redress tells us how Nigeria is viewed by those who lead us
(d) the constitution amendment exercises ever so wilfully embarked upon have not for once reviewed the shrinking of Nigerian geographical expression as caused by the ICJ ruling
(e) the seeming silence by the Federal executive council, State Council and the ruling political party, PDP under which the ICJ ruling was made is indeed not golden if not consent.

So I ask myself, if those who have been elected to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria have shown these sort of non-chalance towards Bakassi (land and people), then there might really be nothing our granmmar, patriotism and passion for keeping Bakassi as part of Nigeria can do.
Except of course, there is a grand strategy by the Federal Government to win Bakassi back through approaches they are not willing to disclose for "security reasons" or to completely relinquish the land to Cameroon for reasons they will never tell us beyong abiding by the ICJ ruling.

Well, before we take a position, lets wait till October 10 deadline for appeal before we know what actually is the fate of Bakassi (land and people). Nigeria governent may surprise us all by that date, the surprise could be negative or positive.

2. Duty of Nigerian People: The Nigerian people have not really shown by agitation or representation to our own government our position on Bakassi beyond rhetorics and these so called "fresh facts" These indifferences could be a product of the conflicting heterogenic interests playing out in the 'regional firmament' of all the ethnic structural composition that Nigeria is. Bakassi is situated in the South-South (Niger Delta) which is the most heterogenous region in Nigeria. It is a shame that the Bakassi problem is not seen as a regional problem the way resource control is seen. This is one of the problems of Niger Delta, always failing to articulate their positions regionally, always appealing to sentiments, always seeking for immediate gains, always myopic in their approach. If your land is taken away from you, how do you struggle for resource control?

Many Niger Deltan fronts, activists, lobby groups, miltants and politicians/stakeholders have not pushed the Bakassi cause to become bigger than Nigeria the way they all pushed for resource control leading to militancy, it is as if it (Bakassi) is not part of the Niger Delta problem. In fact the whole Niger Delta struggle has alienated the tribes in the region far from each other rather than bringing them together (this is what Bakassi shows). Someone mentioned OBJ being Yoruba would not have agreed to ICJ ruling if Bakassi were to be part of Yorubaland (very myopic). My response to that assertion is that the issue would have become a big Yoruba regional agenda bigger that even Nigeria the same way attempting to cede the Nigerian part of Lake Chad to Niger Republic would have become a bigger Hausa-Fulani regional agenda far bigger than Nigeria.

In these two extreme circumstances, any Nigerian president would have been compelled (put under pressure) to question or even outrightly reject ICJ ruling because it would have become a regional issue where all blocs making up that region would rise up to defend one of their own. The Niger Delta failed in this responsibility, the political, economical, traditional, intellectual class and militant youths all went to sleep over Bakassi. It is a truism that other people will rise to your support only when you call for it, this the South-South people did not do. On a lager scale. all other regions too kept quiet and turned the Bakassi issue to a mere government issue.

That is how we all, as Nigerian people (including the diaspora), fail in our duty to the homeland. The Bakassi issue is a people issue, Bakassi is not a barren, uninhabited or just discovered piece of peninsula like the Falkland Islands someone referred to. We have all failed the Bakassi people because in our typical non-chalant attitude and selfishness, greed and crass irresponsibility, we have abandoned our kith and kin to be prey to Cameroonian sharks.

This crass irresponsibility is seen in the way we have been treating the Bakassi people since the debacle of the ICJ ruling. It is an extraordinairy shame that we can still not relocate and resettle those that have become homeless since the ICJ ruling, ten years after. We are all blabbing grammar here online, even passing blames and calling others names, which is easier to do. The NGO, the Save Nigeria Group, the Civil Society Groups including the labour and Professional unions/associations have all gone missiing over the most important issues in the lives of all dead, living and unborn Nigerians.

If it is Fuel Subsidy or Minimum Wage, we will occupy Nigeria, if it is shenanigan fraud cases, we will be setting up phony probes. If it is about protesters and skirmishes, we will be mobilising armed JTF troops to parks and streets. If it is about political posturing or positioning, we wiil be organising stakeholders conferences and holding nocturnal meetings to address issues of national importance. If losing a territory either through war or ICJ ruling is not of national importance or of internal and external security concerns, then I dont know if we will ever have one, not even Boko Haram or blowing of oil pipelines or Ogoni self rule declaration.

3. International Politics: International politics play out under the umbrella of National Government responsibility and Citizens Duties to their country. Unfortunately, Nigeria as a country lack these two basic ingredients of playing international politics. Reason why we will always fail when it comes to international adjudication. True, the case started under Abacha, but because our population size always deceive us about our ability, we become "the bigger they come, the harder they fall". We have tenaciously called ourselves what we truly are not, we live in grand illusion of our unproductive and illiterate population. We have erroneous impression of ourselves as the black power and giant of Africa, when in reality we are midgets in Africa (not to mention world) politics, finance, trade and industry. In fact we add very little value in comparative terms to world economy, it is when decisions like this ICJ ruling comes our way that our true reflection in international politics dawn on us. Of course like arrogant fools that we are, we will never accept that reality.

Is it not a shame that Nigeria, with our so prided "world class historians", "legal luminaries", "international diplomats", "financial icons", "industrial moguls", "political heavyweights" and "global economist" can not sit down, form a "world beater team" and present a "water tight" document to prove the "belonginess" (not ownership) of Bakassi to Nigeria, that can never be separated by any human act other than a plebiscite or referendum. This failure is a true reflection of our outer and inner selves as undignified people who can sell themselves for a plate of porridge.

We are not our kith and kin (brothers) keepers, we dont defend the defeceless, we dont support those needing support, we dont care for those needing care, we dont respect one another, we dont share each others problem, we dont talk for those without voice, we dont feed those without food, we dont house those homeless, we dont love one another, we are simply hypocritically religious, we steal from ourselves, we exploit one another, we are corrupt, greedy, selfcentred, arrogant and ignorant. Yet we will not admit. We are not progressive, proactive but very superficial and irresponsible, (leaders, followers and all). No one is immune to these traits, we are all the same, reason why we are so blessed yet so poor.

We are excellent at passing bucks and antagonising one another and never willing to admit good in others or accept our failings. We are jealous of one another and will rather work against each others' interest instead of protecting them (crab syndrome). We strongly lack communal spirit. This is what Bakassi have exposed us to be, there is no hiding place for us any more. Even the British were disgusted with us over the case, of course the British would not fight our battles. In our delusion, some of us will blame colonial rule for our woes as if we are the only country once under colonial rule. China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, South America including Canada and USA were all once under British colonial imperialism. What is the gap between us and these countries. The Kashmir is still a disputed region between Pakistan and India, Golan Heights is another.

Why do we chickenly let go of Bakassi, Abacha, no; Abdusalam, no; OBJ, no; Jonathan, no; cowardice, no; lack of history and incontrovertible evidence, no; lack of international support, no; lack of resources, no; it is simply because it is in our gene to abandon/deny our own, turn black (dead) eye to our responsibility, deprive our dependants and live outrageously.

We are all to blame for the impending loss of Bakassi. But the biggest blame goes to the Government at all levels in Nigeria and all groups (locally and in diaspora) claiming to be representing and fighting for the interest of the Nigerian people. Posterity will not forgive all of us. Dont think you can extricate yourself by blaming others.

On lighter side, Bakassi is a word used to describe one of the beautiful booties of our women, so if Bakassi goes to Cameroon, can we still use the name in such manner?. Will we send all Bakassi boys to Cameroon? Just asking!!!.

Your oil? hahahahahah. Poorly managed oil you should say.. Get your facts straight from a lot of your compatriots who live in Cameroon. Oil means little or nothing to Cameroonians. Nobody associates Bakassi with oil in Cameroon. Instead it is looked upon as the faraway land with no basic amenities.. Every government worker dreads going to work there. Last year the father of a family friend serving as a Divisional Administrator in Bakassi was kidnapped by the "thief- thief" Niger Delta boys. The government had to pay 70million Naira equivalent for his release. So get your facts straight when you talk about criminality.

funny u say that. I have heard of many cases where people from other west African countries commit crimes and claim to be Nigerian. One case like that, the guy kept lying so much that the police had to come to the train station to round up a lot of boys who could communicate with him (just so they could find out what country he originate from). I heard the Nigerians spoke to him in Ibo, yoruba, hausa and benin. The guy later told em in pigeon "why una won spoil im market"

I do not think all Nigerians are criminals. You were the first to say thief thief Cameroonians and I responded by saying Nigeria has more notoriety when it comes to crime. In Cameroon Nigerians are free to engage in any form and kind of business. The best shoe mender in the town where I live is a Nigerian and that is where I repair my shoes. I buy my groceries from a Shop owned by a Nigerian. I get the spare parts to my my vehicle from a Nigerian. They have been here for tens of years. If they were badly treated they would have return. Every country has its laws, if you respect them you are in for a good time. A legally residing Nigerian has the right to take a Cameroonian to the police or even send him to jail if he is at fault. I know a lot of cases. In many African countries it is impossible for a foreigner to make a police case against you. Now Mrs Onila do not even talk about leadership, it is better to be ruled by a clown like Paul Biya than to be ruled by lunatics like Abacha and Babaginda.
