The Bayelsa government wants to immortalize the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha for creating the state 16 years ago today. His family has been invited for the celebrations and a 150 duplex housing scheme is going to be named after him. What are ur thoughts on these moves?

AS Bayelsa State marks the 16th anniversary of the creation of the state, the state government has announced its decision to immortalise the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

To this end, it has concluded plans to lay the foundation stone for a 150 duplex housing estate, which would be named after the late military Head of State who created Bayelsa State on October 1, 1996.

Governor Seriake Dickson announced this in his broadcast to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State and the 52nd Independence of the country.

According to Dickson, government in partnership with the Ijaw National Congress (INC), has christened the main auditorium of the INC secretariat after Abacha as well as invite the family of the late General to be part of the celebration and also plant a memorial tree in his honour.

This gesture, which is coming 16 years after the creation of the state, would also be used to honour the first civilian Governor of the state, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, for his commitment to the Ijaw struggle by naming a hall after him in the INC building, which was started by him.

Governor Dickson also paid tributes to those he described as worthy Nigerian leaders like President Olusegun Obasanjo and late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua whose actions impacted positively on Bayelsans, stressing that they too would be honoured in due course.

Abacha remains the most Niger Delta friendly President in Nigeria's history. He would have made the Niger Delta a Dubai of sorts if he was alive. He had Northerners and Westerners as enemies because he chose to do the right thing. Many of us condemning him are not aware of politics that went on that period. He did not annul June 12 but they blackmailed him and Yorubas started fighting him like he was the guilty one while they remained friends with IBB.

And we wonder why this country isn't moving 4ward. This is the same way Alamesiegha was celebrated on his shameful return into the country. Nigerian citizens aren't exactly guilt free.

Lol abacha was a tyrant whether una like am or not. Killing of saro wiwa, abiola etc and you thinking making the person a hero cuz of state creation makes sense ?. Abacha, ibb etc have history that can never be erased fact. So if killing of others makes one a hero so long as he is not your ethnicity then you need to have your position reexamined. Abagworo am referring to you. If abacha had killed ojukwu and other Igbo leaders would you support the move ?

Just somehow, you have to bring the word Ojukwu or Igbo to balance your debate. Boring!
Btw, Abagworo does not speak for his kinsmen not to talk of the Ndigbo.

Abacha was simply a dumb tyrant!

If the report is true, then Governor Dickson is surely thinking with his anus. What thought does the name SANI ABACHA conjure in the national psyche of Nigeria. Abacha represents the absurd, the monument of corruption and epitome of dictatorial tyranny. If all these are not enough for Dickson to look for another fellow to bestow honor on, then there is something terribly amiss in the philosophy of the man. How the hell did we come to have these kinds of morally bankrupt people in high places?

Re: Bayelsa To Immortalise Sani Abacha by Abagworo(m): 9:59am On Oct 02, 2012
Abacha may have his flaws but became a tyrant because he was trying to stabilize the country amidst unnecessary opposition from greedy politicians and military men. You cannot call Jonathan a tyrant because he's fighting Boko Haram. Remember NADECO and other political terrorist groups that sprung up then. The 1st bombing in Nigeria was done by NADECO. The media was not fair to Abacha. Though young then, I was a witness to the construction of link roads to Buguma and Degema via Ogbakiri in Rivers State which was hitherto visited by boat. No one else has succeeded in linking Riverine communities by road except Abacha. He already planned a long link road joining Bonny to Port Harcourt. Why do you people think there is a very important road in Port Harcourt known as Abacha Road?

Above all, he created Bayelsa State.

Oh yes my brother! The most friendly Nigerdelta president indeed. He demonstrated his friendship by

1. Putting Ken Saro Wiwa and his henchmen through the rope.

2. Permiting Shell and other multinational companies to exploit and destroy Nigerdeltans and their environment with impunity.

3. Impoverishing the Nigerdelta region and reducing them to beggars in their own land.

4. Transforming a village called Abuja to a modern metropolitan city with money from Nigerdelta.

5. Looting the wealth from Nigerdelta with impunity and stacking it in his Swiss Bank.

6. Need I say more? undecided
