If na beautiful mind, I get am well. I once dated a guy living with this disease, it was even a blind date (a friend hooked us up) so I didn't even know what he looked like and he never gave any authentic details of himself. My mind was wide open till I got to the meet up place and saw one guy limping with a cane walking towards me. I recognised the face, yes I was shocked but being myself, I gave him a warm hug. He never disclosed this to me.So questions followed and he opened up. I loved him anyways, fought off friends who tried to ridicule him but I found out that he was a bitter person about this disease.( Guy was a very cute, intelligent man) am sure he thought I was gonna leave him like the others did. I stayed. He had 3 crisis in just one winter!!.(I don't pray even my enemies to have this disease) wish I could take his pain away. I cried more than him. His hip bone was just grating away, so much pain,Stayed with him till he got better. By Gods grace he survived that one. When he proposed, I didn't know if I wanted to deal with these crisis repeatedly even though I am AA, the fate of my children having to deal with As issues on who to marry hunted me. And his bitter part, I just didn't know how to deal with it.

It's also important that people with SCD get psychotherapy. Cos this kind of thing fit turn person mind like crazy.
Thanks for sharing. The SCD is not suppose to make a sufferer bitter, if he understands him/herself. Positive thinking can help anybody. I am blessed with a beautiful mind.

truly you have a beautiful mind, I also limp as a result of avascular necrosis of my femoral head. It can be corrected by anthroplasty but I don't want any part of me being replaced. With physiotherapy I will walk alright again, presently I can almost run.

As for psychotherapy, lol, I don't have self pity or bitterness. That was long ago, I took them and turned it round, these days I'm working on my being over confident and sometimes outright bully. There are these set of crisis I survived that for like 2 years human emotions meant nothing to me. I was just disconnected. Even presently I'm still working on it.

Everyday I look at healthy people and how ignorant they are about the miracle of a healthy life.

Has anyone had to deal with Rhesus incompatibility(Rh -ve) with SCD. I don't know how this works, does it have any effect on SCD.

If you were AA, would u date or marry an SS person having experienced the Challenges of of living with SCD? Be honest.
my fiancee is SS n we met about a year ago.she dicovered she was ss at age 5 n for a very long time battled with it.she is 28 now n stronger than ever.she gradually learnt how to deal with, primarily by knowing wat d symptons are,wen they come n wat happens wen they are comin. first thn we cleared was d ss issue. she actually tried to make me realize how bad d situation could be, 4 me. but d more we got on,d more i realized dat she is d one 4 me.she is doin great healthwise,in fact on several occassions,i actually was able to predict dat her crisis was near.she's had just 2 so far n they were mild.she takes her medication regularly n by God's grace,d worst is behind us. but the thn i admire most about her is dat she is a fighter n a survivor. she knows wat she has n knows equally how to deal with it. she's bn doin it alone for long, now she has me.so to answer ur question, YES.

Amynamerica:

I beg to differ.

The reason why SCD sufferers are advised to avoid mosquito bites at all cost, is as a result of the fragile nature of their Red Blood Cells. The Red Blood Cell of a Sufferer lives for half the life span of a normal Red Blood Cell. That's is why its called Sickle Cell ANAEMIA (because they are always in need of fresh Red Blood Cells). When Malaria strikes, the Red Blood Cells get depleted even faster, causing a build-up in the Liver (as it tries to eliminate the dead cells) thereby causing the eyes to yellow. This (yellowing of the eyes) is usually taken as a sign of malaria in most sufferers.

This short life span of the Red Blood Cells of sufferer should not be qualified as an advantage. If malaria strikes the sufferer at a time when the blood levels are at a low, it could lead to death.
pls read my post again my argument is not sufferer's ability to withstand malaria attack but their resistance to malaria attack u were right about the anaemia in fact that is further supporting my point . Homozygous SS and heterozygous AS genotypes have some level of resistance to malaria attack their response to attack is totally a different matter

@poster:the theory that people with sickle cell anaemia are not susceptible to malaria is a fact.
The causative organism of malaria "plasmodium" cant parasitize the red blood cells of people with SCA because the red blood cells are sickle shaped. So pls get your facts right before feeding it to us.

If u are talking about AS having resistance to Malaria, I concur, but not on the issue of SS. I am not a doctor. U studied this, I live it! I've had near death experiences arising from malaria!

My dear we can argue on this back and forth without getting to a compromise.
I have said it here and elsewhere, NO SICKLER SHOULD EXPOSE HIM/HERSELF TO MALARIA THINKING THEY ARE RESISTANT TO IT. YOU WILL ONLY HAVE YOURSELF TO BLAME.

"In the latter
study the HbS carrier state was found to be
negatively associated with all potentially lethal
forms of P.falciparum malaria, whereas the
negative associations of the carrier states of HbC
and α-thalassemia were limited to cerebral
malaria and severe anemia, respectively. These
findings strongly suggest that, under conditions of
intense P.falciparum transmission, young sickle-
cell heterozygotes (AS) survive better than those
with normal hemoglobin (AA), whereas sickle-cell
homozygotes (SS) survive least well of all three
genotypes." Culled from Wikipedia en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_resistance_to_malaria

Sickle cell trait(AS) confers some level of immunity to malaria in children between the ages of 1 to 5yrs!

The immunity is lost after 5yrs!

There is no evidence that sickle cell anaemia(SS) confers any form of immunity to malaria. In fact they suffers from malaria frequently and are prone to severe form of malaria. Anti-malarial drug is one of their routine drugs in addition to folic acid.

Pls let's not miseducate the casual observers!

It not easy been a ss paient but with GOD faithfulness I have been able to overcome the pain but luckily for me most of my pains last max of 1week,I hardly go to the hospitals cos the doctors r just theives who give you the same drug at ridculous prices, and I have noticed any time am in crisis no matter the drug I take, its wen d pain decides to go down that it does.
But I have a question pls wat do u guys use to curb pains wen dey come,I have pains in differnt parts of my body sometyms my ass(lol)I heard abt someone who experiences pain in her vigna sometyms.but the worst is the back pain cos there is no how I can rub it to reduce the pain(lol).Don't mind me I love massaging my body wen the pain come just to reduce it.
Also does the disease affect a female monthly period, because I feel it does cos my monthly tinz come but in very little bits(I hope u guys understand)lol...

My dear as an SC, yours suppose to be very mild compared to others. I know this because I was told by my doctor (the one that left the country) that I am SC. But, some of the subsequent lab results have been very confusing. From SC, to SS, and evn AA (lol). To play safe, I just stick to SS.

Try Cellod-S, I believe you will see a change. Goodluck.

get the drug cellod s, if you have money buy procin x too from them, it helps with the pains a lot. Just be on the drug constantly for now and you will be amazed with the results. You will totally recover from all your symptoms.

There is no pain killer for crisis, my doctor administers anaesthetic, yeah the one used to kill pain before operation is carried out. Your doctor needs to know exactly what he is doing else he will mess u up. I've seen patients being addicted to it. One more thing is crisis pains varies from the slight to the ones where you beg to die.

honestly, I see people in the medical field as inexperienced when it comes to dealing with Scd. I've had the thought once or twice to go back to school to study medicine and be a sickle cell specialist. Knowledge in the field is too shallow. Sometimes doctors with private hospitals try not to admit patients in crisis. Its really pathetic. I hate it when you are in crisis and the Dr says 'give him folic acid'.

Pain in sickle cell anaemia is often severe an excruciating. The pain is comparable to those with terminal cancer. Just like the control of pain in terminal cancer; pain in sickle cell anaemia can be controlled with morpnine or morphine-like drugs. The drugs is not freely available in the market because of its potential for abuse. WARNING! Morphine is used with caution. It can be addictive. Overdose can cause paralysis of respiratory muscles leading to respiratory depression and death. I will advise you to hook up to a haematologist in any teaching hospital for proper management of your condition. Rehydration is of utmost importance too.

Also does the disease affect a female monthly period
Yes it does! In fact sickle cell anaemia is a wide topic in gynaecology. It affects females in many ways ranging from delayed puberty to menstrual irregularities.

Hi there!

The reason for ur period not flowing well (and I'm guessing it come late at times too) is because ur Red blood cells levels are low. This is not peculiar to SS alone. Try boosting it regularly by eating a lot of green vegetables especially pumpkin leaves. If u can, wash the leaves as ‎u would bitter leaf and drink. Works wonders for ur blood levels.

As for the pain, one thing I do while experiencing pains is to calm down and try shut it out. Crying or rolling about makes it worse. Also drink lots and lots of water. I have actually avoided going to the hospital on some occasions by doing that.
And there's Cellod-S!

Training in the medical field differs from institution to institution. Some are lax, while others are strict. Sickle cell disease is a rapidly evolving field. New informations are added to its database everyday, and doctors are struggling to cope. I have to advise you to hook up to a haematologist in any tertiary health centres. They are the doctors who are better equipped to manage the condition to the patient's satisfaction.

There are stages involved in drug trial. Drugs are not shipped to the market in a hurry. The drug must be shown to be efficacious and safe for human consumption. So the drugs must pass through those stages. If the drug alleviates your condition and causes cancer after some years; you will be the first person to race to court with litigation against the pharmaceutical company. So relax! Don't rush it. It's for your own good.
