No matter how well you improve the road service network, nothing will work becoause more people will troop into Lagos to overload them. Extend the development into surrounding states... I have been thinking of starting a thread on the need for Lagos to build super-highways and bridges. Unfortunately, I have a constraint on getting street-view pictures of Lagos from Google Map website, it seem the feature is not yet available for any part of Nigeria. Why are we so backward? Anyway, y'all should be expecting such a thread from me in the nearest future. |

while we are waiting for the propose rail lines to be completed.the govt should as a quick fix lay huge emphasis on an effective ferry service which i believe should take off about 10-20 percent of traffic off the road if properly managed. -Build more flyovers in congested routes where applicable to decongest traffic. -fix potholes. -widen some routes to include bicycle lanes. -more BRT lanes and buses. -Better and efficient traffic regulation and enforcement without extorting motorist. -like what someone posted earlier develop routes leading to stallite towns and neighbouring states with road and rail where applicable to decongest the city of lagos. |

Does the Lagos state govt really need your input? What makes you think (no matter how lofty your ideas are) your input will be considered. Apparently, these guys in govt spend greater percentage of their time abroad compared to home front. Aren't those things they see in those countries impress and inspire them? Some of those countries are not as rich as Nigeria. Do they really need to be enlightened? Lagos state govt has the answer to the traffic imbroglio in the state, but it lacks the will power and the fear of respite an ordinary man on the street may enjoy. The Govt believes, in poverty will the people continue to be hoodwinked. Developmental framework/blueprint is a pathfinder to any govt. You dont just wake up one day and sign a bill into law without weighting the pro and con of the bill. You don't expect to make a mega city overnight out of no long term planning. Mega city without access to opportunities is as good as making a wish. Our leaders a gifted with the attitude of doing the last thing first and the first thing last. They want names but not achievement speaking for them. For quick reference: Agricultural sector needs urgent attention in Nigeria. Diversifying the economy will drive growth and non--dependent on the enigma called 'oil'. A lot of things will fall into place. There will be remarkable non-dependent in govt for certain needs. Do we need to tutor the govt that there is a need for infrastructural development and reinforcement? Why is revamping the power sector a mirage? To me, it's a waste of productive time. They will rather embezzle tax payers money and invest same in foreign countries, because they dont care about you, than considering your advices which are things they already knew. 2 Likes |

The truth is until the Govt. strengthens other modes of transportation (water and rail) there'll be no permanent solution to our road transport challenges. The roads are experiencing too much pressure; growing population & freight. |

To actually solve Lagos Traffic will require alot of funds as the only answer is mass transit, combination of subway and integrated bus services. however rail/subway will be very expensive and time consuming even if the funds are there. In the meantime aside from other brilliant ideas aforementioned integrated bus service operated by private companies with different types of buses ordinary/luxurious ones big/small ones plying all routes and a total repair of all Lagos roads. If you take a critical look at Lagos traffic, Cars heading to Lagos Island from every part of Lagos account for more than half of the total cars on the roads and 75% of them are private cars with only one passenger. With the integrated bus services, private car owners should be able use it and drop their cars for public transport All companies with more than 150 members of staff must be to mandated to provide staff bus All roads leading to Lagos island should charge congestion charge for private cars with less than 4 passengers from 6:30 till 10:30 am with these it will be better 2 Likes |

Hello All, There is no easy solution, because lagos is overpopulated and Nigerians love their cars and it is hard to change some habits. Here are my two kobos First lagos stae government needs to CREATE a website that deals with transport accross lagos. They need to ENLIGHTEN the public that this site gives real-time solution to your destination. Lucky enough Gidi_traffic is doing a bit of that but nonetheless they need to have one that gives "how to" directions on moving from point A to B across lagos. Inform the public so everyone is aware especially the working/middle and wealthy. Secondly the Central Business Districts/Areas i.e CMS, V/I, Lekki-Ajah, Ikoyi all these places with high density of business and worker (basically Lagos island and 3MB inclusive) should be run by ONLY BRT. Yes BRT. Now, All BRTs must be air-conditioned, even if you have to jerk up the price by additional N70. As opposed to queuing for them and wasting time. Let the BRTs be coming even say 10mins ( but during rush hour in the morning and evenings..5mins)and let all their routes pass through all the business areas(lagos island) and cater for transport on the island. They will terminate their tranpsortation into the mainland borders like oshodi, oworonshoki, yaba...include more.let All yellow buses, yes all..commute from these locations to all areas in mainland. These will reduce time spent on the road from the island because the yellow buses are too much and are a main sourse of traffic. Impose congestion charges in these central business districts so only people who need to use their cars and probably it will encourage people sharing cars to the island to reduce the cost. Make it high say daily rate of N2k.(Not easy to sell). This is because 80% of vehicles in lagos traffic are private owned. Of that 70% have only one passenger(I.e the driver and probably the owner)is in the vehicle. This charge will serve as extra income and a deterrent. Also I notice that their are few alternative routes and where they exist they are really really bad roads. No one wants to ply them, so work on these alternative roads(the website will help people know of them). Thirdly, enlighten , yes enlighten people across lagos on using the lagos ferry services. Organise the routes well (website should give details). Let safety jackets(life vest) for every passenger. Fourthly all tankers, trailers moving combustile, cargo like(containers) should move during off peak hours. Enforce it and make sure they stick to it. This will ensure they plan and organise themselves. There has been countless traffic because of trailer or tanker breakdowns/ accident and they obstruct lagos a lot. Not to sound condescending most of thes Heavy duty drivers are not carefull on the road.(Probably Lagos can organise a training so they know how they will conduct their Heavy duty on lagos sroads) Lastly fast track the light rail construction it is so vital to lagos . There a lot more but these are immediate thing/policies that can be carried outTwo kobo Lastly fast track the light rail construction it is so vital to lagos Two kobo 6 Likes |

Wonderful topic! First of all Lagos State govt come out sincere with their traffic efforts and policies. Fourth mainland bridge should transform from impossibility to reality. Pending when they choose to do overhaul, they should patch up those myriads of potholes that fuel trafficjam on some major roads. They should go finish all those road projects of first term which were abandoned. Govt should get serious with canals and gutters not being blocked any longer. There're lots of critical connecting roads which govt of own wisdom chose not give. They should go work on those roads. Govt should stop building narrow roads which still tend to choke up traffic (like the one around the recent plane crash site). Bustops should be made wide enough to keep the roads free of them danfos. They should thoroughly retrain all LASTMA Officials. The list's endless but I believe govt sincerity of purpose is the sure foundation of riddance to bad trafficjam. |

naptu2: 1) More segregated BRT Lanes (Lekki Expressway, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, etc). My brother u r on point. These projects though r long term and capital intensive. The masses wld benefit in the long run. Hope politicians and our rulers r advised in this direction. The new construction shld also include underwater/underground tunnels for cars and trains, decentralized areas of huge workful i.e. spread the offices and establishment in VI to other parts like Abule egba, Badagry, Ota, Mowe area Ikorodu e.t.c. VI don full. Most importantly, be strict with driving laws like ensuring that only licensed drivers ply the roads. All shld pass a standard driving test b4 been issued a license. |

Desola: More BRT busesThank you very much for this post, what Lagos needs like you pointed out is a sustainable and highly integrated transport solutions. Get private cars off the road by making its use less attractive while making the public option more attractive. In addition to what you proposed, we need more buses not necessarily on segregated lanes. These buses need to be able to transit on minor roads and major streets. There are also cheaper options like the guided bus way which is much more cheaper than rails. A good example is Cambridgeshire guided busway. Bigger roads won't work, once the government builds bigger roads, private cars would increase and we are back to square one. even and odd numbers won't work as well, that was practiced in the 80's but Nigerians are sharp, they started registering their cars in even n odd numbers. Yes, we need congestion charging on Central business districts. Creation of plenty park and ride would be good as well. Someone mentioned car pooling. That's a good idea too. |

Financial Institutions (banks and insurance companies) should all open by 10 am. That will take 50 percent of commuters off the road at rush hour. With E-banking, do your pressing transactions on-line. 1 Like |

There is only one way RAIL TRANSPORT (inter city & intra city) with adequate park and ride car parks for bus, ferry and rail services. With this, Lagos traffic will vanish like Magic. Half of the traffic will be off the road |

let me use this to proffer a solution to the traffic congestIon regularlly seen on Lagos-Abeokuta express-way iyana-ipaja/dopemu axis goes as follows: the road divider around iyana Busstop should be opened up and a traffic light erected there. This will enable cars to freely go through Go-ye/AlImosho road(the road can be made a 'oneway' road at specIfIc tIme of the day), which can easily be linked into Ipaja, Gown Estate, Egbeda-Ikotun. Am sure this will help to reduce the congestion by Atleast 40%Since most of the people plying the road have no reason go through iyana-Ipaja Bridge or Dopemu bridge. I definitely hope to pass this to the appropriate authority, anyone living around this area can pls comment |

Alternate number plates based on even and odd numbers, heard some African countries did that in the 80's & 90's that will sanitize traffic and patronize BRT buses. |

We had that in the 1980s. . . Didn't work. Everybody had two cars; one odd numbered, the other even numbered. Some even had two license plates for one car. |

Skipped a few post, not sure if any of my point have been mentioned but i had similar tauts 2 days ago on my driving to work and this is my resolve . I think lagos should have official working hours.. Like 6am, 8am and 10am.. meaning rather than everyone resuming work at 7am or 8am, companies should have a flexible resumption period.. ie if you resume 6am, you close for 3pm and hit the road right away. same for those who close for 8am to close for 5pm and 10 for 7.. Also commercial busses should be reduced, yes, reduced.. Accredited and certified danfo buses should be allowed to use the brt lane. that way they can be sure not to stop in the middle of roads trying to pic or drop passengers. Another option is to have parking spaces in major local areas, like we can have a parking venue at national stadium, orile, yaba, ajah, etc, major residential areas, all you need to do is drive your cars there at a particular time and there are buses waiting to take you to your major zones like VI, Ikeja etc.., only ppl whose zones aren't covered can use their cars, if they make it cheaper im sure many ppl would use these zones. Cos iv noticed that on thursday mornings in lagos, traders open for 10am, there usually are lesser busses and cars on the road and getting to work is most times very smooth, why not make it a policy then? Certain markets with major traffic flow should open late.. Idumota..etc. a few other things sha, (im tired of typing ).. 1 Like |

timmy:Actually, what Lagos require are multi-level parking structures, not just parking spaces. We should be looking beyond wasting spaces for car pack, rather we need something like 7-storey parking space on the Islands (Lagos Island and Victoria Island). This will be a lucrative business for private investors in coming years. 1 Like |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by swoosh(m): 7:41pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
1. Fix pot holes/death traps - very Important 2. Check Danfo Activity - Danfos are notorious for using bad spots as bus stops (good example is iyana Ipaja road(offramp to Dopemu). This creates heavy traffic 3. Ensure bus stops are several meters aways from the road. Typical example is Iyana-Oworo. If the bust stop were to be larger and farther off from the 3rd Mainland Bridge, traffic on 3MB wud significantly reduce. This should also apply to other bus stops along the road leading to the toll gate 4. Build multi-storey Parking lots (with adequate security) at BRT stations - this will encourage many people to patronize BRT buses and leave their cars behind 5. Create alternate transport means - water/rail NB. This is a very good topic - I hope someone close to government passes all our suggestions to the ministry of ransport |
Re: Ideas For Solving Traffic Congestion In Lagos by naptu2: 8:23pm On Nov 14, 2012 |
The frustrating thing for me is that most of these suggestions are already in the pipeline, but I think it's taking waaaaay too much time to implement. 1)Decongesting the Central Business District: - There's the proposed Badagry Business District, Lekki Free Trade Area, Ikorodu Business District and Eko Atlantic City. 2) Rail: - Lamata has proposed 7 lines and work has begun on two of those lines. 3) Ferry: - Government is importing water buses from Australia and has licensed franchisees (Tarzan, etc). 4) Multi-level parking: - The initial plan was to start with three structures - Ikeja, Marina and Victoria Island. They had some private investors that were interested in the project, but after a while, everything went quiet. 5) Satellite Towns: This has been done over and over again. First there are the "Divisions" of Lagos - Ikorodu, Badagry and Epe; then the Federal Government came up with Festac and Satellite Towns. Each time the city just expanded and these areas became caught up in the congestion (although I think that rail links between Lagos and the Divisions would work wonders). The FG also had the idea to make Ibadan a satellite town of Lagos, with the Lagos-Ibadan mass transit rail scheme, but that was never properly implemented. 6) Regulate danfo: - That's one of the reasons Lastma was created. If you say danfo should be banned, then I'll direct your attention to the uproar caused by the ban on the operations of okada. 7) Odd and even numbers: I witnessed this in the '80s. People will buy multiple cars, use fake license plates, etc to beat the system. It'll only end up enriching the police. Fourth Mainland Bridge: - This is one of the most frustrating projects. It has been on and off almost forever. 9) Integrated Mass Transit system: Launched by Babangida in the mid '80s and implemented half-heartedly. You can take the (air-conditioned) train from Ibadan to Iddo, then take the ferry to Marina, Queensdrive, Osborne or Maroko. Fashola's administration has also taken up the project. Marina will be a hub for rail, ferry, BRT, regular bus and taxi services. When will all these be completed 3 Likes 3 Shares |

Get the yellow buses drivers obey traffic rules and we would have gone 40% ahead. In every one second of about sixteen hours out of twentyfour, nearly one thousand drivers disobey traffic rules. So what do we get, just what we have. |
