Probably a negative change of the fair value of d debt instruments they invested in. As long as they are holding, no problem. Below is a description of OCI: "Other comprehensive income is those revenues, expenses, gains, and losses under both Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and International Financial Reporting Standards that are excluded from net income on the income statement. This means that they are instead listed after net income on the income statement.
Revenues, expenses, gains and losses appear in other comprehensive income when they have not yet been realized. Something has been realized when the underlying transaction has been completed, such as when an investment is sold. Thus, if your company has invested in bonds, and the value of those bonds changes, you recognize the difference as a gain or loss in other comprehensive income. Once you sell the bonds, you have then realized the gain or loss associated with the bonds, and can then shift the gain or loss out of other comprehensive income and into a line item higher in the income statement, so that it is a part of net income" Copied from a random Google search... 4 Likes |

He identified Dangote Flour around N2. I bought the stock at N4 and rode till N17 before i sold. Those who waited till the end of the film sold to Olams at around N24.
He also identified Vitafoam at around N5, although my average price for Vitafoam is less than N4.
You are correct my Oga. I remember the Dangote Flour PLC scenario. What surprised me about his prediction was that a lot of investment professionals in some of the big named organisations doubted the significant rise would happen to the stock and kept a lot of their clients in the dungeons. Senior man, @Currentprice was able to create an opening for the few who trusted to see some light and crawl out of those dungeons. They will be unable to sell for as long as the political heavyweights are still around. Even the heavyweights are not willing to inject funds to rescue the Bank from its precipitous situation. You may be thinking about being speculative but it is a dangerous game with that Bank. By the way, Accumulated deficit is the same as retained earnings.
In other words, Union Bank has been making losses so much that their retained earnings since inception is now negative. Probably losses from costumers who defaulted on their loans.
So, book value per share is negative, about -2.3 kobo per share.

onegentleguy:
Imagine someone asserting that UNITY bank could pay a dividend in the near term and even comparing it to WEMA !! ...a bank(WEMA) that performed even better than a few banks(including one 1st tier bank) in one of its KEY efficiency line. Pls lets always remember that someone, somewhere, might innocently act on what we put out here, so it's important to always season our post with FACTS.
Looking at the coys spate of financial print, UNITY should've long been a distressed entity !!
1st off, the banks OHLSONS O-SCORE shows that there is an extremely high risk of default(distress/bankruptcy risk in view) ...current score shows that the bank should have gone under. Infact, JAPAUL(@ its current state) and the 'late' SKYE BANK(before it was bridged) are better off than UNITY. I dare say that if UNITY is still in existence, then SKYE should 'naturally' not have been bridged !!
Again the coys ALTMAN Z-SCORE points to a high credit risk weighting with a wide negative value drive behind the current price. The only reason this bank haven't gone into extinction is probably because of the influence of what I call the political gladiators(mainly from the north) behind it. Perhaps the bank is used as a medium to 'play out and achieve other things' for them. The other day, I saw what looked like an abandoned mosque as a branch of the bank in one of the highbrow areas of the city of PH. ...and further checks after going in(a sought of fact behind the figures) painted a perturbing situation.
Now let me reveal a few shocking lines from their last financial print(Q3 in view)
...a brief;
Assuming a run rate of their reported PAT(approx N1.48B) is grown by that margin YoY, it will take the bank near 23 yrs to offset her RE position and start issuing a dividend !! ...and assuming the same run rate(pat growth) is maintained and a share reorganization exercise(similar to the WEMA style) is carried out, it will take the bank over 8 yrs to pay a dividend !! So perhaps the expectation of a dividend(as cashflow reward) should be for one's kid(s) should they decide to align with UNITY as a dividend growth stock now.
Again the liabilities line shows that UNITY is on a life line. When u see issued debt/borrowed fund and inter bank debt growing @ 5x and over 2x the rate to that of deposit pool, it describes a grossly distressed bank !! It's clear that the CBN is... It also clearly looks like when u do some math(add/subtract a few figures), u'll get an interpretative line that highlights the high risk of even banking with UNITY.(deposit pool in view) The interpretation of this is that it's even dangerous to associate with UNITY as a cus*****, much less the situation as a shareholder !!
Elsewhere, the anatomy of the banks cashflow statement shows a 'messed up' entity. Don't want to say much so I wouldn't appear to be demarketing the bank... but there are quite a few very worrying RED FLAGS. The only possibility of a swift turnaround would be if an investor comes in to pick up the 'carcasses' and bail out the bank. I think the bank should look to temporarily give up on its national banking licence and adopt a regional banking one as a way of optimizing(cutting) cost. ...and then reorganize and restrategize on their target market to begin a fresh growth from the grassroot. Kind of adopt the WEMA approach. Along that line, Management must have to be very efficient(with been innovative) if they truly desire any meaningful turnaround !!
Bottom line: UNITY should be avoided !! While u might probably make money speculating on it, u could possibly lose more !! Remember;
"When a company within the stock market wants to quickly dispose of 'a building without a foundation', it auctions it to a SPECULATOR. An INVESTOR stays far away... a TRADER watches on... but it is the SPECULATOR who eventually buys the auction." ~Sinclair
"The danger with SPECULATING in the stock market is that it is an adversary to any clear Investing STRATEGY. ...and often times, 'it is neither here nor there' With 90% of the act, it is just like attempting to invent an idea that is already obsolete." ~Sinclair
NOTE: NOT a recommendation. When in doubt, pls do well to seek the services of a reputable investment manager for guidance. My advise: Just follow ur instinct. sonofElElyon:

Dear @ SonofELELyon if I may come in; what @ Sir Oracle was trying to infer is that it might be better (in this instance) to FOCUS on the message and not the messenger. In reality, people will pass messages accross using different forms of representation, but often relative to their interpretation of matters and/or the peculiarity at the time. ...sometimes it (the spoken or written word) might seem very nice, at other times not so nice, but the most important thing is to understand the INTENT or DRIVE behind the message. If and when you can establish that the intent/drive is genuine (I think it's the case here), then it might be better to allow it take higher precedence ahead of ones emotion. Let me give you a fine illustration; Let's say you sought the view/advice of 3 investors Mr X, Y and Z on whether to buy a certain coy V. Mr X had/has made returns investing in the stock... Mr Y has lost or is losing money in it while Mr Z, though not invested in the coy, has broad knowledge of it. (fundamental stand in view) Now you'd expect to get different replies/revert from all 3 of them even if they all have genuine intentions. I can tell you for free that you will like the message representation of some but definitely not all. This is something I have personally learned and come to terms with over time. While pa Emma' post may not have sounded so nice, I'd prefer to (again, in this instance) focus on WHY the message was given and not HOW it was passed. ...and in that light, he meant no harm. He was only trying to look out for you. I also think that @mcy56 means well! ...she's been doing a great job here. Pls do try to calm down, pick a thing or two as lesson and move on! By the way, pls kindly read through the post from 2019 above. With UNITY BANK, not much has changed since that post. While there's been a slight improvement from then, RISK is still far ahead of the combination of REWARD and the coys CMP. You may wish to trade the stock if you understand it's TA dynamics but even then, be VIGILANT! Do take care of you. Regards 9 Likes |

Your village people will respect you very well. 22 Likes 1 Share |

RabbiDoracle:
This was the post that started the admonition.
This first post showed that you were about making decision to buy something 'toxic' perse.
And your attention were drawn to the fundamentals of what you want to buy. Maybe you got upset when you were referred to as ponzi investor. This shouldn't make you have such hard feelings.
Now you talk of Mcy supporting people. Do you know she lost money trading Skyebank (when it was nationalised on Sunday morning) after people warned her about the same fundamentals that Unity Bank is exhibiting today?
I do not think it is a cabal thing being created. They are only helping you to make an informed decision. One poster even said you should set your money ablaze instead of buying the stock.
Can the stock rise due to uninformed investing? Yes. Can you make money using technical analysis? Yes. But they are just drawing your attention on the fundamentals of this bank which if all that applied to Afribank, Union Bank, Bank PHB, Skyewere to apply to this same bank, you will not be happy.
We knew this bank since SLS time o. So no be today the bank don dey like that. It has political clout.
It is not a cabal thing. They are only telling you to be careful. I have come to realize that one thing that's common with a black man is AGGRESSION. 6 Likes |
