Once you have selected a course, click on the blue bar with "See Enrollment Options" at the bottom. This will take you to another page where you will see several options. If you want a certificate, you will have to pay for it. If you just want to follow the lectures and learn, it is free to audit the course.

I'm currently studying lambda calculus, can anybody give me a definition of alpha equivalence ?
And I mean a mathematical definition, indeed this field is too polluted by computer scientists who lack mathematical knowledge. (For the fact they aren't mathematicians)

my desire is to be able to design front ends for my databases, design GUIs and desktop applications that can also serve as front ends or data analysis applications.

i know little of PHP, Python, CSS, Mysql (through video tutorials). one of my main challenge is i don't know what to do with them, especially after learning the basis..... i don't mind being an apprentice to an expert here wink grin grin

thanks in advance.

It’s really bn long i made this post (about 10 years). Today, a lot have changed and I work as a senior data engineer now , having worked as software developer, data analyst, ML engineer etc in the past. Thanks to all who helped on this thread.

Chief, I’m a mechanical engineering graduate. I just started learning python mainly because, it’s one of the requirements for most of the scholarships I’d love to apply. I’ve gotten to like Python but I know it’s quite early to assume it’ll be this rosy. I’d so appreciate, if there are materials you can recommend for me or can give me some advice that’ll help me. Thank you.

I am happy for you as you have taken the important step which is getting started.

Python is now so powerful and seems to be the main language for data and AI, so you have taken the right step.

If you want to do anything “data” related, just make sure your python and SQL are well grounded and you are good to go.

Regarding material, I don’t really have any specific one, just goto YouTube, maybe code academy on YouTube and other popular account on YouTube.

Finally, to really grow, you must built stuffs, this will help you solve problems, build muscle memory and grow your confidence.

PS: if you want to talk, drop your whatsapp and I will buzz you

I would like to take a moment to address the recurring threads on this board regarding the common question of "which programming language should I start with?" I understand that this topic can be overwhelming, especially for beginners eager to embark on their programming journey. Therefore, I have created this thread to provide some guidance and foster a collaborative discussion. Please note that while I may not possess all-encompassing knowledge or exceptional writing skills, I will make an effort to assist to the best of my abilities. I encourage everyone to kindly correct any mistakes I make and contribute their valuable insights to enrich this discussion.

To avoid redundancy, I will assume that prior to entering this thread, you already have a basic understanding of what programming entails. In essence, programming involves the creation of various applications and software solutions using your intellect and a computer.
Programmers can be referred to by various titles, including software programmers, software developers, and other terms synonymous with these roles.

Now, let's delve into the question at hand. It's important to note that no definitive answer exists to which programming language to start with. The choice largely depends on your goals, interests, and the specific applications you envision creating. However, I'll provide some general guidance to help you navigate through the myriad of programming languages available:

1. Python: Python is often recommended as a beginner-friendly language due to its simplicity and readability. It has a vast array of libraries and frameworks that make it suitable for various domains such as web development, data analysis, and artificial intelligence.

2. JavaScript: If you are interested in web development, learning JavaScript is essential. It is the language of the web and enables you to create interactive user interfaces and dynamic web applications.

3. Java: Java is a versatile language widely used in enterprise applications, Android app development, and big data processing. Its strict syntax and strong object-oriented principles make it a valuable language to learn.

4. C#: C# is a powerful language primarily used in Windows application development, game development with Unity, and backend web development with ASP.NET. If these areas pique your interest, C# might be a good choice.

5. Ruby: Known for its elegant syntax and developer-friendly environment, Ruby is commonly used in web development, particularly with the Ruby on Rails framework.

Remember, the aforementioned languages are just a starting point, and your path may deviate based on your interests. As you progress, you'll find that learning additional languages becomes easier since the fundamental programming concepts remain consistent across different languages.

Please feel free to ask any questions, and I will do my best to provide helpful answers. For queries beyond my expertise, I trust that our experienced members will contribute thei

Made the update as advised... thanks.

As at the time I started, it was php and mysql I was doing. I later switched to Python. Ifyou have interest in Data, please do Python and SQL. If you have luxury of time and patience, then try Rust, Golan etc.

Best of luck.

By the way, I already wrote an implementation of alpha equivalence before I even asked the question here. I just wanted to see if you guys had your own. (Without using Brujni.)
