PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday said that the Federal Government is repositioning the Nigerian maritime sector to take a leading position as alternative source of revenue in growing the economy in with its economic diversification programme.

The President who was the Special Guest of Honour at a public book presentation titled: Harnessing Nigeria’s Maritime Assets – Past, Present and Future, authored by the Executive Director, Finance and Administration of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr. Bashir Jamoh, said that there is no change without pain, hence the need for Nigerians to keep faith with the Federal Government’s determination to rejuvenate Nigeria’s economy.

President Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, stated: ‘‘Nigeria has relied so much on the crude oil economy; it is time to focus on other sources particularly the Blue Economy which covers both aquatic and marine spaces including oceans, seas, coasts, lakes, rivers and underground waters; which also encompasses a range of productive sectors including Fisheries, Aquaculture, Tourism, Transport, Ship building, energy, bio-prospecting, under-water mining and related activities, all pointing towards economic prosperity, when adequately harnessed.

“We know that the maritime sector has so much to offer the economy in terms of jobs and wealth creation and also contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). On our part as a government, we are determined to walk the talk so that our economic diversification initiative will be fully achieved for the benefit of all Nigerians”, the President said.

He commended the Dr. Dakuku Peterside led Management of NIMASA for its efforts in repositioning the maritime sector and for its huge contributions to the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF) of the Federal Government.

He added that there is a new NIMASA, noting that the Agency has been transformed to being alive to its mandates.

Commenting on the book, Amaechi stated that it is a document that should be given adequate consideration as it speaks to the Authority and other stakeholders in the maritime sector.
Speaking further he said the Federal Ministry of Transportation understands stakeholders’ yearnings for urgent review of the guidelines for the disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Funds (CVFF), and called for an immediate meeting in his office to find a lasting solution to it.

The event also had in attendance, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who buttressed the Federal Government’s quest for diversification, adding that the government is willing to implement any new idea that will bring about a boost to the Nigerian economy.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, also joined his counterparts in Government to assure that the military will continue to provide necessary security for the protection of the nation’s economy, including the maritime sector where the Army, Navy and Air Force are currently playing major roles in protecting our assets.

On his part, the author of the book, Mr. Bashir Jamoh noted that the book was borne out of his passion for the development of the maritime sector, adding that this is just the beginning for Nigeria as the intention of the book is to expose the vast opportunities in the maritime sector to equally do well as oil and agriculture have done to the economy.

The NIMASA Executive Director who is a seasoned administrator with over 25 years’ experience in the maritime sector is currently a Ph. D student at the University of Port Harcourt, specializing in Logistics and Transport Management.

Dignitaries at the occasion include; representatives of the Emirs of Kano, HRH, Sanusi Lamido II and the Emir of Zauzau, HRH, Dr. Shehu Idris.

Others include; Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media, Mr. Garba Shehu, past Director Generals of NIMASA, key industry players amongst other.

The sacked Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has finally spoken on his ordeal.


In new details which emerged on Wednesday, Daura was quoted as making three declarations: (i) That he took all actions in national interest through a collective responsibility, including involvement of principal officers of sister agencies; (ii) that he acted on a higher authority which he relied on to deploy agents at the National Assembly; (iii) that the report submitted by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Idris Ibrahim was totally incorrect.

In his interim investigation report submitted to the then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, the IGP noted that Daura confessed that he deployed hooded operatives to the National Assembly complex based on intelligence report that unauthorized persons were planning to smuggle in dangerous weapons and incriminating items.

“The former Director-General, Department of State Services, DSS, Lawal Daura, acted unilaterally, without informing the Presidency. He did not share or intimate other Security Agencies on the unlawful operations”, Idris wrote in the report.

Osinbajo, who was in acting capacity while President Muhammadu Buhari was in London, fired Daura earlier in August.

The sack followed the seige which sparked outrage across the country and abroad.

Relaying Daura’s side of the story, one of his confidants told PRNigeria, that the sacked official lamented that neither was he given query over any issue nor indicted on his handling of affairs of the service until his sack.

The source said: “While the former DSS boss has not officially handed over up till now, his house both in Asokoro and Gwarinpa were thoroughly searched in the night and nothing incriminating were found, and all items found including necklace, praying mat, CDs, ATM card, women bags, documents and receipts have been duly returned to him accordingly.”

The source also stated that when Daura was invited by Osinbajo for the security briefing, he quickly rushed out and left some of his personal belonging including phones in the office.

The Daura-born ex-security chief disclosed that when he was whisked away and eventually sacked, he did not know his offence.

“Daura has been completely demoralised by the wide spread insinuations of working for the opposition when he took daring moves to protect the Presidency and the ruling party against the antics of the powerful opposition elements. The allegation of being a mole is utter balderdash!

“Spymasters all over the world can be sacrificed but not to the extent of rubbishing their integrity and reputation on the altar of political considerations, especially a spymaster created by the same system, considering the delicate and sensitive nature of intelligent services.”

A middle-age man, who usually disguises as a lunatic yet alleged to be a kidnapper and ritualist, was on Monday apprehended in Akure, the Ondo Capital.

The “madman”, who was arrested with two mobile phones was said to have been apprehended by some neighbourhood vigilante operatives in Orita Obele area of the capital city after noticing his suspicious movement.

According to an eyewitness, Ganiyu Yusuf, the suspected kidnapper confessed to be from Edo State and simply gave his name as Adetoyinbo.

Yusuf also told DAILY POST that some charms and ritual substances were found in the man’s pocket, adding that timely intervention of policemen rescued the suspect from being set ablaze by angry residents.

“This guy was caught around Orita-Obele estate along roadblock Akure, Ondo state. He was caught by some good Nigerians who have been on his trail for about two weeks after suspecting he’s a kidnapper and only pretending to be a mad man. He was caught with two phones.

“He confessed he’s from Edo state and has been kidnapping in Akure for sometimes now but refused to mention his boss’ name. the police has intervened before the public set him ablaze, he’s presently in Okuta Elerinla police station.

“Please let’s be vigilant, and God will continue to expose the evil doers,” he said.

Confirming the arrest of the supposed lunatic, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph said the man was accused to have chewed and swallowed the SIM card of his phone when he was apprehended.

The PPRO explained that the man was still in police custody for further investigations.

A former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, has mentioned that Nigeria needs competent leaders and not necessarily strong leaders.

According to Jega, an incompetent leader who is strong will end up destroying institutions.

The former INEC boss said this at the 58th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja on Monday, The Punch reports.

He said:

“What we require most are the competence and capacity of leaders to take decisions and be assertive in ensuring that those decisions are actually implemented. So, we have to be very careful in thinking that a strong leader can really help.

“Just like a weak leader can wreck an institution, a strong leader, who has just that power and courage, but lacks the capacity, ability and competence to lead, can also wreck strong institutions.

“Competence of leadership is a very important variable in bringing about the stable political transition, good governance and deepening of democracy.”

The former INEC boss, who superintended the 2011 and 2015 general elections, said politicians must stop treating elections as a do-or-die affair.

He recalled that a former President once said elections must be do-or-die, an incident he described as most unfortunate.

Jega also said there was a need for agencies of government to shun partisanship as this weakened institutions and eroded public confidence.

He added:

“We must emphasise professionalism, impartiality and non-partisanship. This is because quite too often, you have good and strong institutions, but once partisanship is introduced and partiality become the norm, as many public institutions in this country, then those institutions would not be able to deliver effectively on their mandates.”

The former INEC chairman said there was a need for law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to be alive to their responsibilities, adding that the integrity of the electoral process must be preserved and protected.

Jega added:

“From my experience, I am convinced that electoral integrity is key to stable political transition and to ensuring that there is a framework for good governance and societal development. Electoral integrity is not just about the integrity of the election management body. It is also the integrity with which the key stakeholders engage with the electoral process.”

In his remarks, a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, lamented that elections in Africa are always characterised by violence.

He said even the recently concluded NBA election was not without its own controversies.

“The genesis of Africa’s political problems is the action of sit-tight leaders who do all they can to amend the constitutions in order to perpetuate themselves forever. These leaders manipulate very vital democratic organs particularly the legislature and even judiciary to suppress any dissenting voice,” he added.

Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, on Monday declared that he holds former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar in high esteem.

The PDP Presidential aspirant made the declaration while reacting to the report he quoted as saying he did not need money to defeat Abubakar, a fellow Presidential aspirant of the party.

Makarfi, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mukhtar Sirajo said he did not make such a statement about Atiku, who he said he maintains a cordial and mutually respectful relationship with.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to some news headlines making the rounds to the effect that he said he didn’t need money to defeat Atiku Abubakar in the quest for PDP presidential nomination.

“We want to categorically state that that could just be an inference drawn by the reporters from the answer the distinguished senator gave to one of their questions during his engagement with them.

“The question had to do with what they considered his relative disadvantage in a contest that required funding and in which more financially loaded aspirants were involved.

“Makarfi’s answer, which did not mention Atiku’s or anybody’s name was that one did not need to be loaded to lead and went on to cite examples of previous and even current leaders who had no money when leadership beckoned on them.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, Senator Makarfi wishes to make it clear that he holds former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in very high esteem and that the relationship between them is very cordial and mutually respectful.

“Makarfi, therefore, reiterates this respect for him and all the other aspirants whom he considers as brothers and comrades in the struggle to return Nigeria to a path of real democracy and sanity”.

Multiple media reports confirm that Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich has put the club up for sale with a price tag of more than £2billion following his dispute with the Government in recent months over his visa status.

The figure demanded for Chelsea would smash the world record fee for the sale of a football club If a buyer summons up the cash it would nearly triple the most expensive takeover in history which is currently the Glazer family’s £790million purchase of Manchester United in 2006.

According to The Sunday Times, The Raine Group has been hired to assist with the deal and will seek interest from China, the US and the Middle East. The investment bank also helped Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi owners to flog a 13 per cent stake to Chinese investors for £1.9billion three years ago.

Abramovich, 51, is said to have rejected a £2billion bid for his club from Britain’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier this year. The Russian, who has an estimated fortune of £9billion, recently acquired Israeli citizenship amid his visa row in Britain.

He also halted plans for a new 60,000-capacity stadium for Chelsea that would have cost an estimated £500million. Abramovich has been in charge of Chelsea since July 2003 when he bought the West London club for £140million from Ken Bates.

Under his ownership, the Blues have won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League and the FA Cup five times.

Gordons who disclosed that they were on their way to Accra for an event, said 8 minutes into their flight, the plane’s pilot announced that the airplane had a fault and flew them back to Lagos.

A drunk policeman identified simply as Ola SARS, who turned up for a party organised on Thursday to mark Sallah celebration at Transformer Bus Stop, Adiyan, in Ogun State, reportedly shot his friend to death.

The deceased, 36-year-old Ayinde aka Aye, and the drunk policeman were invited to the party organized by the father of the youth leader of the community popularly known as Azeez Terror. It was gathered that by 7pm, Ola SARS who serves in Abuja began misbehaving under the influence of alcohol. He reportedly shot into the air intermittently and refused to yield to cautions by other guests. He wanted to pull the stunt again when a bullet struck Ayinde in the chest.

While Azeez Terror, his father and the policeman fled the scene, Punch’s correspondent gathered that the father of two was rushed to a hospital, where he died. Youths of the community reportedly staged a protest which caused pandemonium in the neighbourhood, and it took the intervention of the police to restore normalcy.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of the area, Bidemi said;

“It was Azeez Terror’s father that organised the party for Sallah celebration. It is a yearly event. The youth leader invited his friends including Ola SARS and Ayinde. I learnt Ola SARS works in Abuja. The party commenced in the afternoon and there was no issue until around 7pm.

“He started shooting into the air after he became drunk. Nobody provoked him. As he wanted to fire another shot into the air, he misfired and shot Ayinde in the chest. He bled profusely and was rushed to the hospital. He died shortly afterwards.

“As I speak with you, Azeez Terror, his father and the killer policeman are still at large. It was very sad. The deceased was an estate agent and had two kids. His wife has been inconsolable since Thursday.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion turned heads when she made her return to Grand Slam tennis this year wearing the eye-catching outfit at Roland Garros, following the birth of her first child in 2017.

A self-proclaimed pastor has found himself in serious trouble after stealing close to N1 million from a bank.

An Igbosere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos Thursday, sentenced a self-proclaimed pastor, Abel Adewale Olukayode, to four years and six months imprisonment for stealing N984,450 from Wema Bank Plc, according to The Nation.

Chief Magistrate A. T. Omoyele convicted Olukayode, 58, on a three-count charge of stealing. According to the report, the magistrate found that he transferred the sum in tranches of N22,550, N701,900 and N260,000 through WEMA Bank’s mobile application to his First Bank and Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) accounts.

She sentenced him to six months imprisonment on count one and two years each on counts two and three without an option of fine.

All sentences will run concurrently, meaning Olukayode, who claimed to be a clergyman with the Apostolic Church, will spend only two years in jail.

In the course of the trial, prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji said the convict, of 26, Sadiku Ayinla Street, Odo-Kekere in Ikorodu, committed the offence between March 5 at about 4pm and March 6, at about 7am, in 2012, with the aid of his mobile phone.

He said: “The defendant, with the aid of his mobile phone with sim number 08034456771, stole N22, 550 through his Wema Bank account, property of WEMA Bank Plc.

“At the same time and place with the aid of his mobile banking application, he transferred N701,900 from WEMA Bank to his GTB Bank account and N260,000 to his First Bank account, property of WEMA Bank Plc”.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened sections 278(2) and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Olukayode pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.

But a witness from WEMA Bank testified that between March 4-6, 2012, the bank’s system malfunctioned and the convict, who had only N300 in a joint account he operated with his wife, took advantage of the situation to steal.

He stated that immediately Olukayode noticed the malfunction, he started buying airtime which accumulated to N22, 550 and thereafter transferred the other amounts to his GTB and First Bank accounts.

The court heard that Olukayode wasn’t the only one that took advantage of the situation, but he was one of a few, who when he was approached, refused to return the money.

When others, who took advantage of the situation, were approached, they admitted their offence and started repaying the money, the witness said.

But Kayode told the bank that he had been praying and asking God to provide for him to enable him build his own church and the money was God’s answer to his prayers.

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has ordered the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, to pay N11million as damages for the breach of fundamental rights of 11 Gombe State indigenes illegally detained by officers of the Nigerian Army.

This followed a fundamental right enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/777/2018, which the Applicants filed through their lawyer, Mr Mela Audu Nunghe.

The court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, declared the detention of the applicants, James Yusuf, Ishaya Ali Poshiya, Nehemiah Yohanna Poshiya, Husseini Poshiya, Hamma Poshiya, Yusuf Mafindi, Yila Boyi, James Bare, Ezekiel Dandaudu, Ali Ishaku and Ilya Bala since July 6, illegal and unconstitutional.

“The long detention and torture, without detention order, of the Applicants since July 6, 2018, by servants and agents of the 1st defendant, COAS, is illegal and unconstitutional and is a violation of the applicants’ fundamental rights as enshrined under Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999”, Vanguard quoted the Justice Ojukwu as saying.

“The 1st Respondent shall pay the sum of N11, 000 000 (Eleven Million Naira) only to the applicants (jointly) as damages for the breach of the applicants’ rights under Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

PDP has reacted to the threat on senate president Bukola Saraki, by the coordinator of Miyetti Allah association in Benue state, Garus Gololo.

Gololo in an interview with Punch said the association will force Saraki out of office if he fails to honorably resign following his defection from APC to PDP.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) describes the outburst of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, echoing the threats by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and agents of the Buhari Presidency, to force out the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, from office, as ominous and revealing.

If anything, this unguarded statement by Miyetti Allah has exposed the synergy between the ruling party and some troublesome elements, who are being used to stoke division and create violent crisis that had resulted into daily bloodlettings in various parts of the country.

It is now abundantly clear to Nigerians that those fomenting crisis, including the bloody clashes in Benue, Taraba, Zamfara, Nassarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Edo, Borno, Yobe, Enugu, Kogi, Adamawa and other states in our country, have political backers, who now want to channel them to achieve their unpatriotic quest to subvert our constitution and forcefully take over the National Assembly.

Before now, to majority of Nigerians, the Miyetti Allah has always represented the military wing of the APC and the Buhari Presidency. It is common knowledge that Mr. President has come under heavy public criticisms on how his body language has condoned the unguarded utterances and actions of these characters.

A woman has been arrested for allegedly scalding her 16-year-old maid with hot water for stealing two eggs.

Mrs. Darasimi Martins, who lives at 16, Olomowewe Street, is said to have sent her teenage house help to buy six eggs but the girl hid two of the eggs for herself when she returned. This angered Mrs Martins when she found out. She then attacked her and poured hot water on her face and body.

This is not the first time Mrs Martins has assaulted her maid but the degree of injury on the girl’s body angered neighbours and they contacted the Child Protection Network, CPN, to report the case, The Nation reports.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent (CSP) said the case had been moved to the Gender Unit for further action.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the demolition of Yinka Ayefele’s Music House which houses his Fresh FM 105.9 radio station.

DAILY POST reports that the building belonging to the popular musician was demolished in the early hours of Sunday by the state government for allegedly contravening its town planning laws.

Reacting to the development, Atiku expressed sadness over the loss of jobs.

On his Twitter page, he wrote: “The reports of the demolition of a radio station in Oyo fills me with a deep sadness. Press freedom is sacrosanct.

“It’s equally saddening that at a time when jobs are badly needed, a radio station which was providing jobs is needlessly demolished.”

Also Senator Ben Murray-Bruce condemned the development.

According to him, Ayefele would be given an award in America for providing jobs for Nigeria rather than have his building demolished.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has reacted to the death of the former United Nations, UN, Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Kofi Annan.

Annan was announced dead on Saturday.

The 7th UN Secretary General died in a hospital in Bern, Switzerland in the early hours of Saturday.

Reacting to his death, PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan described Annan as a rare gem, who will be missed.

In a tweet, Ologbondiyan wrote: “A life well lived!

“Indeed, Africa and the World has lost a rare gem.

“Rest on the Great Diplomat and Global Citizen of the century.

“Rest on Kofi Annan.”

Similarly, wife of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Toyin described the late diplomat as a selfless leader, who placed others first.

A 28-year-old man, Kelvin Michael, has been arrested by men of the Ogun state police command, for the death of his 40-year-old married lover, Monsurat Idowu, after they had a marathon sex at his home on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018.

Michael was arrested after a staff of the Ota General Hospital, Benjamin Okereke, alerted the police when he brought Monsurat’s corspe to the hospital.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said Michael upon interrogation, said the suspect claimed to have met Monsurat last month in a bus at Ketu, Lagos State, where they exchanged phone numbers.

”The suspect told the police that he invited her to the house of his friend in Ota where the deceased slumped and died shortly after they had sex. The police contacted Monsurat’s husband, Lamidi Idowu, who is a commercial bus driver.”

Oyeyemi said the husband of the deceased told the police that he left his wife in the house hale and hearty while going to work, wondering what might have led to her untimely death. The PPRO said Monsurat’s corpse had been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Isa Hamma Misau and his counterpart in the Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, have insisted that they would sponsor a motion on the floor urging the Federal Government to immediately set up a Judicial Commission of Enquiry to probe the recent invasion of the National Assembly Complex by masked operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Misau and Ibrahim, in a joint statement on Thursday, stated that an open enquiry would enable Nigerians know what led to the siege and those behind the plot to illegally take over the National Assembly.

The Senators stated that one of the priority assignments of the Senate on resumption would be a motion on the floor in which the National Assembly siege and the rape on democracy would be debated and appropriate resolutions taken on how to redress the situation.

The Senators said: “Is it not curious that the Federal Government has not deemed it necessary to constitute a judicial panel to conduct an impartial and public enquiry into the recent siege on the National Assembly which amounted to a coup against democracy in the country?

“The Federal Government cannot afford to sweep this treasonable act under the carpet nor commit it to a secret in-house committee that may fail to do justice to the matter by treating the heist like business as usual. Sacking the former Director General of the DSS, Mr. Lawal Daura, does not end this. That is just a knee-jack, spontaneous reaction. We now need to understand how to cut off the cancer.

“The National Assembly must insist on getting to the root of the case. We must understand the causes of the invasion, unravel the brains behind the anti-democratic action in order to bring the perpetrators to book and prevent future re-occurrence. The inquiry must not be subjected to executive manipulation and cover up. We must ensure transparency and that is why an open judicial inquiry is what is needed now. A judicial commission of enquiry, holding its investigation in an open environment will help.

“This we believe would serve as a deterrent to any person or group of persons that may want to contemplate such condemnable action in future,” they stated.

While warning that security forces should not be used to derail the nation’s democracy, Misau and Rafiu called on Nigerians and members of the international community to remain alert in order to frustrate further attempts to truncate the nation’s democracy through illegal deployment of security forces to intimidate, harass and arrest political opponents.

They added: “The recent siege on the National Assembly must not happen again and the only way to prevent a future reoccurrence is to ensure that the perpetrators and their evil collaborators are unmasked and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“Anything less would only be condoning illegality and this will be unacceptable to Nigerians and our International development partners – who look up to Nigeria as a leading democratic nation in Africa.

“Any attempt to sweep this siege under the carpet by not setting up a judicial panel to determine the role and level of involvement of those who masterminded the shameful act will be resisted by the National Assembly, and by extension, Nigerians,” Misau and Ibrahim said.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would deliver free, fair and credible elections next year.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the President, Babafemi Ojodu, at the Annual Nigeria Political Parties Summit organised by the Political Parties Leadership and Policy Development Centre of the National Institute for a Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), said no individual interest would be allowed to override the nation’s interest.

He said all activities ahead of the 2019 elections must be approached with the highest level of decorum and strict adherence to rules of the game as enshrined in the constitution, the electoral act and indeed the code of conduct which the political parties freely put in place.

He said: “The interest of Nigeria is higher than the individual interest of any person or group of persons no matter how highly placed. It is our duty to protect and defend the life of every Nigerian while exercising his right to vote.

“We must never allow anyone or anything to derail our match to progress. We must refrain from actions that are capable of threatening the security of this country, particularly hate speeches and attitude to intolerance and division. Let us stand together on the common action of love, unity and stability to salvage Nigeria.

“This political summit offers an opportunity for the political parties to dialogue and take stock of our activities. The absence of dialogue among political parties in the past led to conflict and polarization among political leaders and consequently bitter developments.

“Trust and cooperation between political parties is imperative between political parties for democracy and development. In this respect, I want to commend the political parties for strengthening the Interparty Advisory Council to have a common platform for all political parties to articulate their common problems and deepen democracy. Inter party cooperation in these days is essential for democratic consolidation and national stability.

“Today, I pledge to Nigeria, my country to promote free, fair and credible election devoid of any form of interference in the activities of INEC, to ensure security and promote a violence free election devoid of animosity and hate speeches, to abide by the extant laws governing political parties and adhere strictly to the code of conduct of political parties in Nigeria.”

In an effort to tackle emergencies on its waterways more efficiently, the Lagos State Government is to procure life-saving, quick response boats.

Mr Oladipo Lawanson, the state Commissioner for Transportation, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Lawanson said that the state government was committed to ensuring safety of people using waterways as a means of transport in the state.

“The state government is working on bringing ideals and best practices on water transportation, as the sub-sector requires millions dollars of investment, if we are to do it right.

“We are going to procure life-saving boats, top speed boats and quick response boats so that, at anytime there is an emergency, we will rescue promptly without recording any casualty,” he said.

According to him, the government periodically distributes free life jackets to jetties to save lives on waterways.

The commissioner said that there was at least a guard in every jetty in the state to properly kit passengers before any journey.

“We have water guards in all our jetties to ensure nobody steps into a boat without proper kitting with life jacket because safety of life and property is very important,” he said.

Lawanson added that the government would set up a security institution on water transport.

“The institution will require a lot of training because water transportation is hazardous.”

NAN reports that the state Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, on July 27, expressed his administration’s commitment to providing critical infrastructure and the enabling environment for investors to participate in the ongoing efforts to revamp the state water transport sector.

He said that the sector remained critical to tackling traffic congestion in the state.

Ambode spoke at a roundtable on water transport organised by the government.

According to him, the government was set to fully harness the potential of water transport to the benefit of the people and economic prosperity of the state.

The leadership of the National Ethnic Nationalities’ Youth leaders has waded into the feud between the members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and the Chairman of South-East Traditional Rulers’ Council, His imperial Majesty, Eze Eberechi Dick.

Trouble had started when the monarch announced Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as a recipient of a traditional title, a development that angered the pro-Biafra agitators.

In a statement issued in by the National Director of Information of MASSOB, Comrade Edeson Samuel, the group had threatened that it will never allow Governor Ganduje to step his foot in Aba or the palace of HRM, Eberechi Dick, describing the conferrer as a major Biafra saboteur if he decides to go ahead with the conferment of the traditional title on the governor.

However, the face-off has now been laid to rest following a meeting between the MASSOB and the Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria Ethnic nationalities Youths organizations, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro.

Isiguzoro in a statement made available to DAILY POST said “the leadership of Ethnic Nationalities’ Youth organizations met with Biafra agitators who insists that Kano Governor is not worthy to get chieftaincy title from Igbo land because of some sensitive issues raised.

“After a long deliberation with the Biafra agitators, we can assure our August visitors, Gov Ganduje and his entourage of a peaceful atmosphere during the coronation by Chairman of the South-East Traditional Rulers, His Imperial Majesty, Eze Eberechi Dick.

“MASSOB led by Comrade Uchenna Madu as a cool headed leader with respect to Igbo culture and traditions will not disrupt the coronation of chieftaincy title to Governor Ganduje. After a long deliberation, I can assure our visitors of their safety.”

He added that the group would continue to “unite our people towards achieving peace and tranquillity in Igbo land.”

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has said that he is considering running against President Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential election billed for February, 2019.

The former governor of Kwara state said he can make the change that Nigeria and Nigerians desire.


He disclosed this in an interview with Bloomberg.

“I am consulting and actively considering it. I believe I can make the change,” he was quoted by Bloomberg.

Saraki, a former chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, defected to the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party. The governors of Benue and Kwara have also defected to the PDP. Fourteen other senators also dumped the APC for PDP and African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party associated with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The PDP is expected to hold its primary election in October.

Saraki also claimed that the PDP has learnt its lesson from the loss in 2015 and stand a chance of leading Nigeria in the right direction.

Men of the Oyo State police command on Monday said that they have arrested a man for allegedly being in possession of three human skulls in Ibadan, the state capital.

The 27-year old Sodiq Rasheed, according to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, was arrested around Omi Adio.

Odude while parading the suspect, said he was caught during a raid by the police.

Odude said his accomplice was still at large.

The suspect while speaking with journalists said “It was one man that lured me into the crime.

“I helped him to do something and after we discussed, he told me to bring human skull for money ritual.

“I succeded in getting the three head at a cemetery located in a bush in Omi Adio area and after I was caught, he ran away”.

A woman got more than what she bargained for when she visited her Facebook friend at the highbrow area of Lagos State.

A woman has been rescued after she was robbed and gang-r*ped off the road in Lekki, Lagos when she was out on a date with a Facebook friend.

The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

Lagos State police spokesman, CSP Chike Oti, revealed how the woman (names withheld) connected with the Facebook friend in July 2018.

The Facebook friend, who was described by the police as a r*pist and armed robber was identified as one Richard Samuel Gbenga.

Oti said: “They interacted a couple of times, getting to know each other. However, on August 4, 2018, the said Richard Samuel Gbenga invited the young woman for a dinner and she accepted. She further told him where they would meet before taking off for the dinner.

“The suspect arrived at the agreed take-off point in a Toyota Camry saloon car registration number JJJ 406 DL driven by one Ayo Salau, a member of his robbery gang.

“On their way to Lekki, they pulled over at a lonely spot. Armed with cutlasses, they ordered her to take off clothes or be killed. Seeing she was Unclad, they took turns to r*pe her after which they robbed her of her wristwatch and cash.

“The moment the hoodlums left, the victim raised the alarm and gave a description of their car. Police operatives attached to Maroko Division were alerted and immediately they laid an ambush for the fleeing criminals.

“As soon as the police operatives stopped their vehicle, the criminals took to their heels. The officers chased them and arrested Ayo Salau Yusuf while his partner in crime, Richard Samuel Gbenga, escaped.

“The suspect had since been identified by the victim and he confessed to having committed the crime. He added that his fleeing partner recruited him for the job.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Imohimi Edgal, cautions the youths especially young women to beware of people who may use the social media to take advantage of them. He assures that the long arm of the law will surely catch up with the fleeing suspect.”
