Oyo State Hasn’t Borrowed A Dime In 2 Years – Ajimobi

The second half of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration in Oyo State was on Friday heralded with prayers, with the Governor declaring that his government, despite the huge number of projects being undertaken by it, had not borrowed a single naira from any quarters in the last two years.

The Governor spoke at an inter-faith service organized to mark the second anniversary of his administration at The Remembrance Arcade, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to the Governor, this was achieved through his administration’s financial engineering and deft management of Government’s meager resources.

The service witnessed the assemblage of traditional rulers, eminent personalities, opinion leaders, members of the State Executive Councils, the Legislators, Judicial officers, market men and women, politicians as well as Islamic and Christian religious leaders who led prayers for the State and the Government.

Governor Ajimobi, who assessed his administration in the last two years and gave himself pass mark, said that the contracts awarded by his government included construction of roads and road dualization, bridges, motor parks, neighbourhood markets and other development projects.

Interestingly, the Governor said that his government had not borrow a dime to execute those projects, all of which he said had changed the face of the State.

“I am happy to inform you all that in spite of all the projects that we have executed and are still executing, Oyo is one of the three out of the 36 States in Nigeria that has not taken any loan,’’ he said.

The Governor also said that the remaining part of his administration would be devoted to the construction of N52 billion 108-kilometre Ibadan Circular Road with development corridors, mass housing schemes, logistics centres, cargo airport and two five-star hotels, one of which is already being constructed.

Governor Ajimobi, who expressed his commitment to transforming the State to an enviable position, thanked the people of the State for their cooperation and support which he said was unprecedented in the history of the State.

“We are very happy with ourselves and with what we have done. What we are trying to do to bring back the Oyo State that we used to know, that is, to restore the lost glory of our State,’’ he said.

According to him, the purposeful leadership being given by his administration, as well as the entrenchment of peace and security and the Urban Renewal Programme had led to the influx of both local and foreign investors into the State.

Already, he said that four foreign firms had moved to the State to establish soya milk, bread baking and day old chick factories respectively, adding that these would contribute effectively to the rapid economic growth of the State.

Sermons were delivered by the Presiding Bishop of Rehoboth Cathedral, Ibadan, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun and the Chief Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society, Kano Branch, Sheikh Muyideen Bello.

Bishop Adelakun, for instance, urged the people of the State to avoid blind criticism, to be objective, principled, fair and factual, and to always pray for the Governor and his administration so as to lead the State to the Promised Land.

Sheikh Bello, on his own, congratulated the Governor for giving good name to the State, stressing that the State which used to be identified with thuggery, violence and brigandage was now at peace, with the people now sleeping with their two eyes closed

Impressive fiscal management and plans. No surprise though given the pedigree of Ajimobi. Personally, I think the current crop of ACN Governors have the potentials to achive more than Fashola has. This will not be because they are better administrators but due to the fact that they have far less challenges to deal with than the Lagos governors.

Laudably, the ACN has recognised that proactively securing the funds for State development without depending on federal allocation alone will move things along much quicker.

Nice one!!

Even if the state had borrowed money, it would have been fine as long. As the terms of repayment are sensible and the money put to good use..

Kudos all the. Same...

Thought you said you had changed!

Anyway, this governor is doing a fantastic job and learning he has avoided loans only makes him more impressive!

We see him regularly drive through the city alone evenings and I think that helps him appreciate the challenges people have. IF (because I haven't been to many) this is the rate of development in other towns in the state, it will be fabulous!

Dangote being the richest man in Nigeria still secures bank loans to expand his business even though he can still fund them from his liquid cash reserve. That aside, Oyo state is still massively behind and needs huge investment in infrastructure which the state combined revenues from IGR and Federal allocations can not meet up to it.

Borrowing is not a bad thing as the needed revenue (if spent wisely on the right project) can generate and simulate more growth in the state's economy.

Im sure you can do better with your level of reasoning, in no way has he condemned borrowing but only said he avoided it. But you left me confused by saying Oyo State is "massively left behind"

He is clueless as of what to do with money in bettering his state.

He is the kind of Gov. that will be hoping on an increase from the Federal Purse to demand a higher share.
Just like they conveniently remained silent during the Fuel subsidy palaver only to bare their fangs demanding more money from the pot. These are the kind of governors that will look envyingly at the allocation going to the oil producing states without looking in wards to develop whatever resources (both human and industrial) in their states.
So instead you have a Gov. whose basic function is to:
1. act as paymaster in the moribound state civil service (a sector that is more of a blight to the state)
2. Award contracts on projects that have little or no significant developmental bearing to the state as a whole

He is plain clueless.

Peter Obi is the most fiscally responsible governor in Nigeria but that will not stop me from calling him out. Borrowing is not a bad thing but when you borrow, make sure you utilize it for something worthwhile. If there's need for it then borrow but do it wisely.

Borrowing is not bad if well utilized. Oyo should BORROW to build badly needed infrastructure.

No wonder most state governor's achievements and priorities are still the same as in the early 80's. They are still beating their chest over grappling with road construction, bore-hole commissioning and round about decorations.

The governors of states of those who are complaining have mortgaged their future with loans. Bad belle is killing most of these guys from Sout-East. The crazy part of it is that, most of SE guys reside in Lagos and other Southwestern states.
