Nigeria's Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

By Daniels Ekugo
Anti-corruption nonprofit Transparency International, TI, has released its 2013 Global Corruption Barometer, which surveyed residents in 107 countries, ranking Nigeria, Zambia, Paraguay, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Venezula and Russia as the largest countries on the globe with active corruption indices with Liberia and Mongolia leading the table.

According to the report, the world’s corrupt nations differ in many ways. Four are located in Africa, three in Latin America and two in Asia. These nations also vary considerably in size and population. Mongolia has just 3.2 million residents, while Mexico, Nigeria and Russia are three of the largest countries on the globe, each with more than 100 million people.

In Nigeria, 84% of those surveyed by Transparency International claimed corruption had increased in the past two years, a higher percentage than almost any other country in the world.

Troublingly, 75% of those surveyed also said the government was, at best, ineffective at fighting corruption, worse than in all but 10 countries.
TI says Nigeria is heavily dependent on the oil industry, yet the government refuses to act on accusations that the oil companies are underreporting the value of the resources they extract and the tax they owe by billions of dollars.

The report adds that “certain transparency groups also blamed politicians for encouraging corruption. In 2012, Nigeria had just the 37th largest GDP in the world, despite having the world’s seventh largest population. In Liberia, the majority of Liberians surveyed said they believed the country was run either largely or entirely by a few entities acting in their own self interest.

“A world-leading 86% of residents who spoke to Transparency International claimed their government had been either ineffective or very ineffective at fighting corruption, while 96% of residents claimed Liberia’s legislature was corrupt, also the highest percentage of any nation. A stunning 75% of residents surveyed claimed they had paid a bribe to secure some service, trailing only Sierra Leone.

“In all, 80% of the population had at one point been asked to pay a bribe. Recently, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf fired the country’s auditor general for corruption. Many of those surveyed in the highly corrupt countries also felt their governments were not holding up their end of the bargain.”

According to the report, “in seven of the nine countries, more than half of those questioned felt their government was ineffective at fighting corruption. In Liberia, 86% of residents surveyed said their government was ineffective at fighting the problem. This was the largest proportion of any of the 107 nations Transparency International surveyed. While corruption appears to affect every part of the public sector, certain segments were much worse than the rest.

“Globally, at least 60% of respondents claimed political parties and police were corrupt. Additionally, more than 50% of people stated their legislature, their public officials and their judiciary were corrupt.

In the world’s most corrupt nations, those institutions were, naturally, even worse. In Nigeria, 94% of people claimed their political parties were corrupt, the most in the world. Similarly, 96% of Liberians reported their legislature was corrupt, also the most in the world. In eight of the nine most corrupt nations, more than 80% of residents considered the police to be corrupt.”

I said it, Jonathan is on a mission to bankrupt Nigeria. Anywhere you tune to in local televisions, all you will be hearing is trillion naira contracts awarded without corresponding works! Patience and her son getting out shape owing to the billions they allocated to themselves for food condiments! Clark and asari sharing billions as their efforts in intimidating nigerians! Billions earmarked to fight Amaechi in rivers! There is every need to put concerted effort and sweep these vagabonds out power immediately. Tomorrow maybe too late

Many still would blindly argue this, as they are presently trying to convince the world the Presidency has no hand in the happenings in Rivers State.

Hasn't Nigeria always been one of the most corrupt countries for decades. This shouldn't be news to anyone. Our institutions have clearly failed.

Its funny how people celebrate negative reports. When other non profit organisations said nigeria's econoy was growing geometrically, no body celebrated; when a UN agency said we have eradicated hunger no body clapped. When they said our economy is set to overtake that of south africa, no body danced. When they said Gej has attracted more foreign investment, no thread trended. Now that we are having cassava boom, no voice is being heard. Naija I hail oo

The Government in Nigeria is the innocent mirror of the nation. The quality of government and its leaders, is simply a reflection of the collective consciousness of all the people in Nigeria. In some instances, leaders who came to power as the champions of anti-corruption have themselves been charged with being involved with levels of corruption even more serious than those of their predecessors. If the collective consciousness in Nigeria is disintegrated and negative, and people are not behaving in accord with Natural Law, then problems and corruption will be an unavoidable phenomenon of government. If, on the other hand, the collective consciousness in Nigeria is positive, integrated, and coherent, then the government will not be influenced by any negativity. If the people in Nigeria wish to be protected from corruption in government, then they must create an integrated collective consciousness. Positivity and harmony should be so strong and dense in national consciousness that negative influences cannot penetrate it.

Being frank and realistic with ourselves doesn't mean we are celebrating negative reports.
What should we have done that will please you? Castigate those who compiled the list? Debunk the list? Or blame the opposition for it?
The self deceit we've been swimming in for years is what brought us to this present condition of banana republic we are today.

this is a fake news and a conspiracy against our humble country just to deny us a position that we have laboured to occupy in several years.
nigeria is number 1 on this list and that is just what where we are.
let these idiots write anything they like because we know the truth that they don't like us. we are the most corrupt country in the world so let them give us our award.
from our number 1 to children unborn, corruption is our second name here.
we are the only country still in darkness in this age and time, is that not enough to give us our position as number 1?

Dont mind the hypocrites. Most of the corruption in Nigeria takes place in Lagos and Abuja. Who is in charge of Lagos? Is it PDP? Does any law prevent the governors from fighting corruption? If the governor of Lagos state can fight okada, fight the poor, deport destitutes, fight traffic offenders, etc why cant he also fight corruption?

From Obasanjo's regime 1976 down to Yardua's tenure 2007, Nigeria maintained the number one(1)position on the log I.e corruption was functioning at 100% capacity. But, under Godluck Jonathan, Nigeria is now 8th on the log according to op but 12th on the log according to BBC I.e corruption is functioning at 44% capacity. This clearly shows that under GEJ the country is moving forward and before GEJ leaves office in 2019 corruption must or would have been completely wiped out. Do you know what it means to fall from number one(1) position that you've maintained for over 36years on corruption log to 12th withing 2years of GEJ's tenure? My people this report is not that bad. GEJ is working.

Thank you much, this was what I was looking for cos I saw this 2 days ago. And this brings me to my question: where did PM and SaharaReporters get the figures ('8th most corrupt', 84%) they are paddling around? Was it not d same TI Report they and BBC are reporting here? If same, why d discrepancy? The BBC article (and many others in local and International Media) seem to indicate that in fact fewer people surveyed in Nigeria reported giving/taken less Bribe this year than was previously d case (at 44% of respondents), a figure that was even slightly lower than that of SA and Ghana (two countries that had always done better than 'us' in this sort of survey) even though d % is still unacceptably high; YET here, PM and SaharaReporters are both reporting an increase to 84% and 8th overall? From d Same report? ....BIG QUESTION: Where is d ACTUAL Report so we may read it ourselves and stop bn dependent on its 'interpretations' by Media organisatns, sm of whom hv since shamelessly taken sides and are Bias... Afta that, I shall comment; But only on what d 'Real' Report actuali says
