I need help! I tried to install Nero CD burner on my vista Hp Pavillion 6500 but the Nero would not install. To make matter worse it refused to unistall. Please someone should give me handful info on how I can uninstall this crazy software
Re: Windows Vista Tweaks for Optimal System Performance by pritypeety(f): 3:37pm On Nov 19, 2008
i use vista and i can say its been a very good experience using it.
I am actually an IT student in malaysia so i av to get a very good system.
These are things i did to ensure my system run faster
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor
RAM - 5GB
GRAPHICS CARD - Nividia
I run a registry cleaner everyday to get rid of the leftover keys your unistalled files leave behind
I also use the kaspersky antivirus. Norton is a kind of program that affects the stability of ur system confirmed already.
i blocked so many start up programs which lets me boot up faster.
My base score is 5.9 because of my processor which is a very good thing.
my system has never for once crash despite the fact that i have so man softwares on it.
I run all my programming softwares on it and it is very fast.
Also make sure you defragment you files regularly because this helps save your disk head traveling farther distances to read programs.
well i think dis all for now.

Since the program was not installed there is nothing for you to uninstall.
Moreover if u fill there is something to uninstall go to remove/uninstall programs and search for the program then uninstall

since it did not install fully due to an error or something, it might not uninstall from add and remove programs,  My AVG does that sometimes.

that doesnt solve uninstall problems, you get orphaned references in the registry if you just simply dump the folder. if you do dump the folder then do as pritypeety says: get a good registry cleaner.

ps: where ever did you learn that programs install in \windows\system32?

thats not a folder for user space programs. its drivers, dynamic link libraries and system apps that reside there. Anything below systemroot (ie \WINDOWS) is not to be messed with.

ps: mind your slashes o! \ is not the same as /. in windows \ is path progression, / is a switch.
so don't write c:/ and assume its the same as c:\
in linux its the reverse.

back from a loooong ban. . .

i meant to post this some 4months ago. . .

instead of engaging in OS wars and half hearted flamethrowing (hotfunmi was much more fun - maybe she could give neo a few lessons) , i'll discuss the workarounds/tools i have gotten hold of for vista

yesterday - i found a cool tool thats bundled with it - the snipping tool .with this you can take snapshots of windows, etal. you can configure it with a shorcut key.

earlier - i found a tool called freemem - which means no need to install any memory/ram cleaner. it resides in the windows folder. i've configured task manager to run it every 30 mins from startup.unfortunately, i still havent been able to make it run minimized. i can do that if i'm running from a configured shortcut - but i haven't gotten it to work with task scheduler.

the preview pane.
word acrobat - excel - html files, avi, mpg can be previewed without opening in the preview pane.
by using preview config - you can add other files to the pane. txt files will show in the pane, but .reg, .m3u, ilsp, .inf etal files wont. these files are txt based, so by using preview config you can enable the preview pane to see them as text files, and voila!

readyboost.

the most bleeped up thing about vista for me is resuming from sleep. often cursorfx uses 50% CPU after resuming froom sleep, and readyboost stops working. which is why i have the readyboost monitor. i will not claim to undertand how it measures the cache( ram and pagefile monitors are simple % used , % free) but i use it to confirm that ready boost is active. if not - i just pop out my sd card reinsert it and i'm good to go.

i discussed qttabar. here are a few more screen shots. as i said - it also works in xp, and theres a qt breadcrumbs address bar that can be installed in xp(in all honesty - its more functional than vista's bar)you can configure it to show recent folders, folder properties., run applications, acces favorites, theres a cool tool that enables you to get names/paths/hashes/ etal of sselected items. unlike all the other tools i use for getting names of selected items- this does it the right way - without the extension.that bar is a search bar. it is cool for filtering to files/folder. eg in my rap folder, to get to bone thugs folder, just eneter bo in the search bar, and only files/folders with bo in them are dispalyed.you can get previews of txt based files and images by clicking on them

Re: Windows Vista Tweaks for Optimal System Performance by Nobody: 7:05pm On Nov 28, 2008
take control:this is a tiny app that enables you to bypass windows file protection- which is much more tedious under vista. files in the windows and system 32 folders cannot be overwritten. this is actually a good thing, since the other day i found something weird in my xp installation in the office - my mspaint was displaying german toolbars and characters.obviously it must have been replaced by something. . . if u intend to use third party themes you need replacer to replace some files in system 32.like i said earlier also, old help files in .hlp format will not run in vista, because the help32 file has been truncated, they will work with the help 32 file in xp. to over write, use take control to take control of the file- then reename it. the paste the repllacement and you're good to go. if like me, you prefer ted notepad for windows to notepad ( case conversion, find and replace, etc - you can replace notepad

Ave Vista
some dude who put together a few bling bling toys for vista - you can resize the taskbar thumbnails, make the user icon in the start menu rotate, reintroduce thumbnail previews for html files, and some other stuff

winbubbles:

with this - you can run a lot of tweaks directly without going to the registry.its most famous for allowing you to hack the bubble screensaver - which is where its name came from

file type manager
i think this probably works in xp as well. one of my bigger grouses with vista was that they removed the ability to customize filetypes without entering the registry.i recently found file type manager which allow you to tweak your files.

the best tools though for that aren't freeware - creative element power tools, microangelo on display. i hate the default icons for sketchup files, and i've always changed them in xp. no can do in vista - unless you go trolling therough the registry . those two tools enable me to do that.

autoruns
there was an issue bigbrovar raised about his sony and bloatware. i experienecd the same on new hp laptops. to the layman - the system is loaded. it is loaded - with crap that will consume memory and resources without doing anything. this is where autoruns comes in. autoruns is a fantastic tool from mike russonvich an MS mvp who also gave us preocess explorer- which found sonys rootkit. ( i alway use process explorer in realtime - so i can always tell what is hogging my cpu, and if there are any susppicuos processes running.

with autoruns, you can stop programs from starting with windows. this is helpful if you don't feel comfortable uninstalling them.with autoruns, you can simply disable all the manufacturer bundled bloatware. i did that on my dad's compaq, and immediately freed up some 200mb of ram. autoruns is also great a a malware tracker, as most malware create autostart entries in the registry. with autoruns, you can trace the malware to its installation folder. i actually used a combination of process explorer and autoruns and advanced windows care to remove a funnyust.avi infection from a friends system.

so if you have a brand new system -esp hp/compaq/sony, u can speed it up by disabling al those hp/sony experience programs.

Process explorer
you will know exactly what is slowing down yoursystem, how much ram and virtual, memory your apps are using, the paths of all your processes etc

regtoy is another app.its v similar to tuneup utilities. with it you can tweak all sorts of system settings.works for xp as well.

tweak uac
the screenshot says it all.

there are also a couple of picture resizers out there - i forget their names. (no ms powertoys for vista yet)

you can speed up vista by disabling thumbnails - but that is sort of defaeting the purpose of the thumbnails .i forgeot - in vista pngs can also serve as icons. in xp, it was only ico files.

another complaint in vista had to do wiith the details view , theres full row selection under that. makes working with files a hassle.google clearfullrowselect. thers a vbscript that prevents full row selection

bling bling will always chop memory and resources in windows. apparently it doesn't in linux. i'm saying this because in my own experienec vista dreamscene is a NONO. it will eat 30% of your cpu.ie on idle your system cpu will be 30%. no video wallpapre out there will not chope resources. i've tried the vlc method, then there was a cool app - i forget the name - video wallpaper will slow your system down, and if you're a performance freak, its not worth it.

bitlocker. i've never used it - i'm scared of it - but since i found that i can simply copy a persons files by removing his laptop hard drive and putting it in a drive enclosure and connecting this to my system - i see the idea behind it. especially in a biz environemnt. all i'd have to do is wait for oga to go on leave/a trip, then unscrew his hard drive and peruse through it at my pleasure.
bloatware is a funny term. for the simple reason that it often comes about because of consumer demands and an unhelathy obssession with copying everything your competitors do. vista is not secure! hence defender, UAC, and virtualization.

antiviruses - stay away from norton and mcafee. tghey are system hogs and 90% of the time stuff passes through them. the best antivirus i have used is kaspersky. i still use it - but it is geting tougher. thank goodness for the whitelister. find out if u want to. also - it is a bad idea to run more than one antimalware app. you willsacrifice performance for protection. as anti malware apps run in realtime, scanning your system. bad idea for xp - worse for vista. if u really want speed - dont use any antivirus! bad idea - i know.

what virtualization means is that you cant do anything in program and system folders.(when running UAC) i experieneced this the hard way. i use a lot of addons for my autocad, and i place them in a folder called autocad addons - which is placed in the autocad foler which is in the program files folder. i placed the folder ther- but i couldn't see it. i could navigate to its contents from inside autocad, but not through explorer. in the same way, i use all sorts of icons for object dock, so i have several icon folders. i could not see the content after copying them there. on turning off UAC - the folder contents vanished entirely. two workarounds - 1 disable UAC - which i did or 2 - whta i did a long time ago on an older system. create an alternative program files folder, and install any program u expect to tweak to it. virtualization made cracking applications hell. (those where u have to copy the crack.exe to the applications program folder).

anyway - back to bloatware. i was on a forum where peeps were talking about firefox. they were complaining about how much crap etal is now bundled with the newer editions. but all that 'crap' is as a result of end users requests. so its a catch 22. bloat is inevitable with any application or os, or tool. whta do the earliest versions of winrar, winamp, ms office , windows etal look like. what of games (funny - we never hear gamers compalining that games are bloated). ultimately, vista is keeping up with moores law - computing power will double every 18 months. whats the point of cheap ram, 2.8ghz core 2 duo extreme processors, ddr3ram,10,000rpm hard drives, hybrid hard drives, if you don't harness them? sort of like buying a ferrari - complaining that driving on the autobahn puts wear and tear on the car.

depending on the kind of user you are - the following are a set of cool tools that will enhance your windows experience
teracopy
filemenu tools- adds all sorts of options to explorers context menu - copy name, path register dll server, create new folder, folder size, straight delete
piky basket
chagne extension
glary utilities
ccleaner
lupas rename 2000

the coolest commercial app for tweaking vista
in my expreience is yamicsoft vistamanager

i can't speak for most of the others (dtweak, etal) because cracks/keygens for them are not available.

as always, if some of your apps wont work with vista - dualboot. a lot of noise has been made about virtuallization - but this is the issue - it eats ram and you can't access your gpu - which sort of defeats the whole idea - since the incompatible apps are typically games and 3d applications. i am dualbooting vista and xp, tho i havent booted into xp in a long time. a very good reason to dualboot is file recovery. vista does not come with a repair windows option on the cd. you have to reinstall. so if you have a problem, you can get at your files via xp. there is the option for a clean install wipe the files and a keep existing files - and this works better than in xp. in xp if you choose to keep documents and settings - you find your program folder is still full of your old apps. your old profiles wil also be there, which can be very untidy - as you may not know what you can safely delete. with vista , evrything is moved to a folder called windows old, from where you can reterieve your files after a reinstall.

hmmm this is beginning to remind me of dakmanzero's complaint about windows - crack crack crack everything crack

Re: Windows Vista Tweaks for Optimal System Performance by Nobody: 7:16pm On Nov 28, 2008
these are screen shots of file manager, preview config, the vista uac tweak tool - though i'd advise you to turn it off. there are way too many tweaks and hacks you cant run with it on

Re: Windows Vista Tweaks for Optimal System Performance by Nobody: 7:25pm On Nov 28, 2008
the screenshots were taken using vista's snipping tool
most of this is as far back as july, so it will be disjointed

these are current screenshots

the shorcuts in my explorer window to the left are via findexer

i used to use winbubble to add entries to my explorer context menu, but it was getting too full in the directort/b ackground setting - so now i use a tool called submenu configumilator - thats how i got the tools submenu the other context menu entries above are via winbubble or registry hacks
thei icon is via byblos.dll - though i used resource hacker to tweak byblos

google vista preview handlers - there are alot out there, which enhance the preview pane - in my preview pane is a ruby script preview - without the msdn preview handler pack, it'd be plaintext - with the pack installed you can see the formatting

@oyb,

pls help with this problem, whenever i plugged my powerpack to my lappy, the light dropped. . . I notice that on the screen. Is it the powerpack or something is wrong with the lappy itself?
Re: Windows Vista Tweaks for Optimal System Performance by Nobody: 10:24am On Dec 15, 2008
not a problem,

its probably a power scheme issue

my frinds acer once had that problem

go to control panel and select anything with 'power' in its name

this should take you to your power scheme settings, look for the settings under 'AC power' and adjust accordingly.

hope this helps
