Dis are example of some of d native names, Lado, Yau, Sambo, Namadi, Dantata, kwankwaso, baballe, babangida, babayaro, baba alele, danjuma, danliti, jummai, laraba, asabe, and many more. Many ppl frm d south tend to misconstrued dem as Islamic name which dey are nt. And fyi, its nt only hausa and fulani dat are muslims in d north, there are over 200 tribe in d north which has both muslims and xtains.

The OP asked a question, you are neither northerner nor muslim so. I don't see the correlation between your comment and the question asked.

Anyhow I wish you peace

Some derive their native names from muslim names,like Bakari,Abu,Buba Baba ,Uba,Garba are all derived from the name Abubakar. However, There are very pretty traditional names such as Gambo(idowu in Yorubaland), Gimba, Gimbiya, Kwakutu (fat one) Kaka,Sarki(king ,Oba) and a host of beautiful ones. Not all Northerners are necessarily Muslims or Hausas. Main Hausas live in six states out of the 19 Northern states Namely, Kebbi,Kano, Kaduna,Jigawa,Katsina,and Zamfara.A sprinkling of settlers can also be found in Kaduna State. The other 13 states are noy Hausa States as they have their own dialects,ethnic groupings and cultures.

My points are clear and specific. Any confusion u guys have with names shouldnt be to the classification of the entire Northern region. I knw some ppl/igbos that fled to Northern part of this country few years after Nigerian-Biafran war, so they remained but there religion undeniably were christianity and this question is not to them. I have never seen with my eyes any Igbo full blooded indigene that could proudly profess islam as his religion if not for in disguise of his poor conditions to obtain favour frm a big alhaji. We are igbo and we are for jesus, it is not negotiable and any suggestion otherwise is vehemently resisted. I am not a fanatics but i strongly believe igbos naturally, or by providence are not meant to practice islam. The missionaries would collected when they came. It was a sign of peace and we yielded. We werent caught up in jihad or threat to join.

i have observed all the replies given but sincerely speaking, they are more confusing than enlightening because i hv realised that they were given by non-Hausas.yes Hausas have native names just like the Yorubas and these names are usually divided according to date of birth,time of birth,circumstance of birth,place of birth and lineage.i will restrict myself to names of males.i will expantiate more:
A. date of birth
Danjummai=born on friday
Dan'Asibi= born on saturday
danladi=sunday
danliti=monday
dantala=tuesday
bala or balarabe=wednesday
danlami=thursday
B.time of birth
Damina=born during rainy season
Hantsi=born in the morning
Alhaji=born on Sallah day
C.circumstance of birth
gambo=born after twins(remember former IG Gambo Jimeta)
Tanko=born after 3 females (remember Tanko Yakasai,the veteran Kano politician?)
Lado=following many females
D.place of birth
as for place of birth it usually comes as a last name of a person eg Abubakar Tafawa Balewa,Shehu Shagari,Attahiru Bafarawa,for your information Shekau is not a Hausa man(he is Kanuri and kanuris and Hausas:no love lost).
E.family lineage
some Hausas adopt their family name as their signatures especially the aristocracy.
eg Saminu Turaki (turaki is a family title),etc
hope u are now in the clear.by the way, i am a Hausa-Fulani-Nigerian-Nairalander!
