No-work-no-pay Rule May Escalate ASUU Crisis by Youngzedd(m): 7:24pm On Oct 30, 2013
Asaba – The DeltaStateUniversity Chapterof the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday warned that implementing the No-Work-No-Pay policy would worsenthe industrial crisis in public universities.
The Chairman ofthe chapter, DrEmmanuel Mordi, said in Asaba that the stategovernment was planning to implement thepolicy for the first time.
NAN reports that the stateGovernor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, had urged ASUU membersto return to classroom or face implementation ofthe policy.
“When the strike is called off, lecturers will say: `No pay, no work’. It does not help anybody; it can only escalate thecrisis.
“It is unfortunate that ASUU is at the receiving end, as the government, being stronger, has the power towithhold ASUUmembers’ salaries, he said.
He said that ASUU was willing to call off the strike and would do so as soon as theFederal Governmentshowedmore commitment.
“We are anxious tocall off the strike, but the governmentsaid we should wait for somany months.
“What we must note is that our studentsare also our children. Some lecturersare also students;so, this is a very painful surgical operation, which we have to carry out in the bestinterestofour futuregeneration.”
Also theAdamawa chapter of theChristian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Wednesday said thelingering strike by university teachers in the country could destroythe nation’s tertiary education.
The Chairman ofthe association, Rev. Moses Taparki, in an interview in Yola, expressed displeasure over the inability of theFederal Governmentand theAcademic StaffUnion of Universities (ASUU) toresolve the issues.
Describing the situation as “unfortunate”, he said it had lingered in spite of appeals and interventions by groups and individuals, and blamed the governmentand the union for their seeming “insensitivity” to theissue.
The cleric said the damage thestrike had done to the university systemin thecountry in the past fourmonths would take several years to redress.
“The governmentand ASUUshould take responsibility for the sad development. Many groups and individuals, including religious leaders and traditional rulers, have appealed to them but all have been in vain,” hesaid.
“For the rigid positions thegovernmentand the university teachershave maintained on the matter, I maintain that both partiesmust take full responsibility for thedamage the strike has done to thesystem,” he stressed.

Sincerely, both ASUU and FG should shift ground a little, abeg, the students are rusting away at home, their times are being wasted unnecessarily.

But why don't we love ourselves sef?
The FG don't want to shift ground and the ASUU too will not consider the students that are forced to stay and waste away at home, and at the end of the day, its Nigeria that is the ultimate loser/sufferer, because its the future leaders' lives that we are talking about here.

No work, No Pay is the best thing ever implemented in the strikes especially in the basterdized educational sector.

From the mid 1980s lecturers have become very lazy, most cannot even teach continuously for one year because they have become accustomed to always going on long strikes for 6 months or more, knowing the Government will pay them for the time they spent traveling and fooling around the world instead of teaching the students.

For once, lets be serious as a country and pay for only the time the lecturers are doing what they are being paid for.

if there's one thing you have to know, it's that FG firing lecturers won't solve the educational problems, it'll only turn universities into a political environment coz FG 'll now be in charge of recruitment.

What could possibly be worse than student out of school for their selfish reason? Let me guess, arrest some of the arrow head of this politically motivated strike for sedition, and perhaps treason?

Well, GEJ is simple man, that's why these dissidents can run their mouth?

Well, No work No Pay is it for now. Federal Government should consider ejecting those who have official quarters, cars, etc from those properties if they are paid from government coffers.

Am suprised @ the opinion of some posters in this thread on the no work no pay issue. Majority of us disagree with the policy of FG for withdrawing relief from from Biafara during the war? The policy is as good as good as the biafara/fg issue. Why should the govt go into an agreement that they view as not feasible? The argument that it was made by the previous administration does not hold water because if the present government can inherit foreign reserves from previous administration they shiuld be able to implement agreement reached by the the previous admistration. Looking at the agreement only 21% is for allowances which will be enjoyed by both. academic and non academic staff (most universities has paid non academic staff their share of the 30billion sent to them but rejected theirs on moral grounds). The argument of moral decadence among lecturers is not far from the truth (a common phenomenon in every sector of our dear country) but the fact remains that Universities in Nigeria are poorly funded and there is need for rescue. If ASUU considers the student that are at home currently how about the future students? What will they meet? Considering what is on ground presently......God save Nigeria

I tell you,if you are a student affected by ASUU and you have been at home this four months doing nothing worthwhile with your time and life....smh I wonder how you would fare after graduation.

ASUU is standing on NO PAY,NO WORK....FG is standing on NO WORK,NO PAY.....we are the ones being affected, these people are just callous and both parties would have to answer for their deeds one way or the other....the reason why both of them do not want to shift grounds is what I do not understand yet.....in the meantime while we pray and make noise about the whole strike thing... #work continues

escalate? has things not escalated already If the change they are clamoring for is truly not based on their selfish gain, no-work no-pay should have no effect on them. Or do they want to eat their cake and still have it?? We(students) are suffering already because of the strike, they also should have a taste of the pain.
