Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has raised the alarm that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government is plotting to assassinate him in a crowd and claim accidental discharge. The governor made the revelation during the third year anniversary thanksgiving service of his administration at Living Faith Church, D-Line, Port Harcourt yesterday. He said: “Intelligence report available to us as at this morning indicate that they are plotting to assassinate me in a crowd and claim it was accidental discharge.” The governor said the plots of the APC-led federal government and her associates would not intimidate him as he remains committed to the defence of democracy and Rivers State. He said the plot would fail because God would continue to defend him. He said: “The level of conspiracy against Rivers State is unfortunate. Instead of focusing on governance, they focus on how to assassinate me or frame me up.” Wike alleged that the APC-led federal government through the Inspector General of Police plotted to plant millions of dollars and AK 47 at his Abuja residence, when the Police sought search warrant from an Abuja court. He noted that last week the court ruled that the police cannot search his Abuja residence, stopping them from their evil plot. “I am not afraid of my residence being searched by the police, but I know their evil intention,” he said. Wike said the state government had come to thank God for his protection in the face of continuous plot by agents of the APC-led federal government. He said: “We are born to win; we are born to reign; we are destined for greatness. While other states are inaugurating wheel barrows, we are inaugurating infrastructure.” He said despite the declaration by the former governor that his administration would not be able to pay salaries let alone do projects, his administration has succeeded in delivering outstanding projects. Rivers State Pastor of Living Faith Church, Pastor Isaac Folaji, in his sermon, said thanksgiving engenders growth and blessing. He said thanksgiving enhances God’s protection and financial multiplication. The cleric noted that as a result of the dedication service, God would bless Rivers State. The dedication and thanksgiving service to mark the third anniversary of the administration of Wike attracted traditional rulers, prominent leaders of Rivers State and wife of the former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mrs. Patience Jonathan. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/fg-plans-to-assassinate-me-wike-alleges.html

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, on Sunday commended the outgoing Lagos State executive of the party led by Chief Henry Ajomale. Tinubu said that the Ajomale-led executive did not record any defeat while running the affairs of the party in the state. He gave the commendation when he received the new executive led by its chairman, Alhaji Tunde Balogun who paid him a courtesy visit at his Bourdilion, Ikoyi residence. NAN reports that the outgoing executive ensured that the party maintained discipline and cohesion through the years. ”The outgoing executive led by Chief Ajomale did a wonderful job. He led the party with a unity of purpose underpinned by the spirit of inclusiveness and purpose. ”Under them, we never lost any election. We will not lose any election but this depends on how you handle your new responsibilities, ” he said. Tinubu advised the newly-elected executive of the party in the state to also promote unity and inclusiveness among party members. He charged them to rededicate themselves to the party and work to take it to new level, saying winning all political contests became a hallmark of the party in Lagos. On the issue of the state congress conducted, Tinubu said it was conducted in line with the laws guiding the party. ”The people who own the party have spoken and chosen their leaders. ”The success of the congress confirms the tradition of robust democracy and consensus-building that has brought progressive development to our state, ” he said. Tinubu said the new chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, was no stranger to him and no stranger to responsibility. According to him, as a Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture under his administration, Balogun performed well. The APC National Leader expressed confidence in his ability to lead the party and to deliver. Balogun, the new chairman, thanked the APC national leader and pledged to work hard to take the party to the next level. He commended Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, former National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has revealed what he plans to do if he becomes President in 2019. The former Kaduna State Governor said he would ensure the restructuring of Nigeria with immediate effect. Makarfi also lamented that government institutions have been designed to serve those in power and not the citizens. He told Punch: “I don’t want to politicise the issue but it is something that we cannot run away from. In the PDP, we regard it as one of the most important things that we have to fix. “If I am lucky to be elected by Nigerians, I would make sure that we immediately discuss the nature and timeframe for restructuring. “Restructuring is institutional. For a long time, the institutions of state, such as security, have been designed to serve those in power and not the citizens. We must remove them from economic domination. “What new thing is the current government offering? The only new thing is that we are going backward; they are not even building on the gains of the past. I am sure that many Nigerians would prefer yesterday to today in terms of the government in power. “In school, if a student is asked to repeat a class, such student would learn and try not to repeat the mistakes of the past. We know where we erred and we have learnt our lessons. “Now, we are dealing with people who don’t even agree that they are making mistakes. Thus, the issue of them learning and getting better is not there.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/what-i-will-do-if-i-become-president.html

Nigeria, represented by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has been appointed the new Chairman of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Commonwealth Africa, comprising 19 countries. The appointment was announced at the 8th Regional Conference of the body which ended in Abuja on Friday. The group said in a communique that the members resolved to deepen collaboration on asset tracking and recovery. It expressed concern about the heavy losses that Africa was suffering as a result of illegal transfers of proceeds of corruption and crime. To effectively tackle the challenge, the body stressed the need for synergy among member countries. “African countries should strengthen cooperation and partnership in the tracing, recovery and return of assets in accordance with Article 54 of the United Nations Convention against Corruption and Article 16 of the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.’’ The group underscored the importance of whistleblowing in the fight against corruption, asset recovery and return and urged African countries to enact strong whistleblowing legislations and provide protection for whistleblowers. Nigeria introduced the whistleblowing policy in December 2016 as part of efforts toward achieving the goals of the fight against corruption. Anti-corruption agencies from member countries, however, appealed to judicial and prosecuting authorities to support and fast-track prosecution of corruption cases. “Anti-corruption agencies in Africa should explore innovative ways of delivering public education, awareness and sensitisation messages to the general public about tracing and recovering of assets,’’ the group said. It appreciated the invaluable support and warm hospitality provided by the federal government, EFCC, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the people of Nigeria. Meanwhile, Uganda has been nominated to host the 2019 conference in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesperson for EFCC, announced in a statement. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/nigeria-emerges-chair-of-19-member-anti.html

• Okorocha’s attempt to cancel congresses fails Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja The All Progressives Congress (APC) appeal committee has rectified the ward and local government congresses held in Imo State, effectively putting paid to the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s efforts to reverse the outcome of the congresses. The approval by the committee came just as members of the Imo State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Hon. Acho Ihim, stormed the APC national secretariat in Abuja last Tuesday along with some party stakeholders from the state to protest against the outcome of the congress. Okorocha had earlier met President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osibanjo to protest alleged malfeasance during the last two congresses in his state and to demand their cancellation. However, the appeal panel report has dismissed the petition by aggrieved stakeholders on grounds that it lacked merit. In the report submitted by Imo State Congress Committee and signed by its Chairman, Senator Abubakar Tutare, the panel held that the congress committee mandated to conduct the exercise has confirmed that the exercise actually took place in the state. The appeal committee further said those who wrote the petition against the congress were unqualified persons. According to the report, “The congress committee presented video evidence to support their position that the congress actually held in the state.” The Speaker of the state assembly who led some members of the House of Representatives and 24 members of the state assembly to a meeting with the APC national chairman, said they had come to the national headquarters of the party to protest against the conduct of congress in Imo State. He said they mobilised the 24 members of the state assembly in order to show how serious the matter is to the party stakeholders in the state. Ihim said the lawmakers and governor still have implicit confidence in the ability of the NWC to resolve the matter. The Speaker said: “We are here to reaffirm that there was no congresses in the 305 wards in the state, and we demand that a categorical statement be made by the party for a new date that fresh congresses of the party will be held “As for the discussions we had with the national chairman, that was an in-house thing, but we have affirmed our stand with our governor, and we are still with him. He is the face of the APC in the South-east region. Of course, the young man has done so well that without him, there would have been no APC in the region in the first place. Imo State in particular is the fulcrum of APC and it cannot be toyed with. “We demand that the constituted statement and announcement be made about the congresses that did not hold. The new date should be announced and the whole things should be ratified and there will be peace in the state. “The shenanigans that we saw can never be taken for congresses. We are taking this very seriously, and that is why honourable members of APC extractions combined with the House of Representatives are here to affirm same, that there was no congress and we never took it to have been held, and we here are saying that we support Okorocha,” he said. When asked the view of legislators on the move by the governor to endorse his son-in-law, Ihim said the governor has a right to support anyone for elective office. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/apc-appeal-panel-upholds-imo-congresses.html

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, has explained why he may abandon the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite declaring support for the winner of the Ekiti APC Gubernatorial Primary, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Saturday. Recall that Fayemi had won 941 votes to Oni’s 481 to emerge the party’s candidate in the July 2018 governorship race in the state. But Oni said he has heard reports of attacks on his political supporters and threats of further attacks on them should Fayemi emerge governor. He said this may make him dump the APC, while insisting that the welfare of his supporters remain paramount in his heart. Oni, a Deputy National Chairman of APC, said, “Our people must learn a new lesson that when you enjoy goodwill, and you lose a primary, the next thing is for you to move to another party, thinking that you will win,” “We are approaching a windstorm, which is the election and I believe we need to take caution on both sides. As much as we are ready to work with the winner, they too must be receptive and be trusting. “We are not scavenging, neither are we scavengers. We have been receiving pressures from different parties that we should come for their tickets, but we said no because we want this to be an example and become a new thinking that when you lose the primary, you must stay in your party even when you are popular. “But if they continue to harass my supporters, I may quit the party, because I have responsibility not only to protect them but ensure that they are not taken for a ride.” http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/why-i-may-dump-apc-after-declaring.html

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on Thursday received more endorsement ahead of the 2019 general elections. This time, the Forum of Former elected local government chairmen in the State have thrown their weight behind him. The former council chairmen made the endorsement during a ceremony at the ALGON office in Enugu. Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Mathias Ekweremadu, the Chairman of the group said they resolved to support the Governor because of his sterling performance in office. Ekweremadu, who was chairman of Aninri LGA, said Ugwuanyi had made his mark in the past four years and built legacies across all the 17 local governments and 260 wards in the state. “Democracy is working in Enugu State. Gburus (Ugwuanyi) is our man for 2019. We want to let our people to know that government is what you can do for your people and not what your people can do for you. “We celebrated the payment of 13 month’s salary in Enugu State. We have also celebrated infrastructure development. There is peace and security in the State,” Ekweremadu said. While throwing more light on the endorsement, Ogbonna Idike, the secretary of the association, noted that Governor Ugwuanyi had within a short period in office transformed the state by the provision of infrastructure developments in the three senatorial districts of Enugu State. Idike, who was chairman of Igbo-etiti LGA, said Ugwuanyi has since the inception of his administration, run an all inclusive administration, which manifests itself in key appointments and other political zones of Enugu State. “That the Governor has continued to lubricate and maintain the state apparatuses, especially the public service by ensuring the prompt payment of salaries to civil and public servants, resulting in the payment of one extra full month salary to every civil and public servant in Enugu State to celebrate the 2017 Christmas. “The gradual liquidation of the severance allowances owed to former council chairmen, councilors and other former political office holder in Enugu state, appointment of members of the association to the political offices in the state, are highly commendable. “The maintenance of peace and security in the state, which has ensured that Enugu State continues to be ranked as the safest state in Nigeria as currently pronounced by the Inspector General of Police and the recent provision of patrol Hilux vans, equipped with sophisticated security gadgets are proofs that the life and security of every resident of Enugu State, are the primary concern of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration,” Idike said. The former council boss equally lauded other giant strides of the Governor, such as encouraging investment through tax holidays, as a catalyst for job creation and N100 million endowments for the neighbouurhod watch, resulting in the procurement of patrol vehicles in the various communities in Enugu Stae in line with international standards on community policing. Idike praised the Governor for reaching out to other political parties, apart from his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the firm belief that governance is about the people and not based on only political leanings. He described as unprecedented, the construction of five ultra-modern fire stations across the state, employment of 2000 primary school teachers and another 2000 post primary school teachers in Enugu State. He applauded the Governor for the revitalization of Enugu State Star Printing and Publishing Company, publishers of Daily Star, which had gone moribund for over 20 years and immediate release of N5 million to each of the 450 communities in Enugu State as part of the N10 million grant for the execution of projects that are dear to the hearts of the people. He added that the empowerment of Market women with the sum of N50,000 to each of them and the recent directive for the reconstruction of market stalls gutted by fire at Timbre Shed Uwani Enugu showed that Governor Ugwuanyi’s democracy dividends know no boundaries. Responding, Governor Ugwuanyi said he was humbled by the endorsement he received from the former council chairmen, pointing out that the foundation of the peace enjoyed in Enugu State today emanated from the local governments. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/2019-forum-of-former-enugu-lg-chairmen.html

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday inspected the new headquarters building of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and said he will continue to support efforts to build and strengthen the nation’s institutions irrespective of any differences. Saraki, who spoke to journalists after a tour of the edifice, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, in Abuja, said he was particularly impressed by the quality of work done and the fact the the building was designed by a Nigerian architect. He said he was duty bound to visit the completed project as part of his oversight functions in view of the contributions of the National Assembly to its realization. He said that the nation must continue to build institutions as well as strengthen existing ones to realize its dream of becoming a great democratic country. On the import of his visit to the project site, Saraki said: “I think the most important thing as far as we are concerned is that I have always said that we must always continue to build institutions and that is what is important and we must continue to support in building these institutions. “If we are going to build a better society in our country, one of the main things we must tackle is the issue of corruption and how we can do that is by strengthening these institutions. “My presence here is to say that whatever we do in our job, the most important thing is that we all represent institutions and we must work and see that it is in the interest of the country. “So my presence here is, after a building like this where the National Assembly has played a great role, it must be my responsibility to see how the money was spent and I can see that that has been done properly and we should continue to work together to see that that goes well for the entire country. “If you look at most projects in Abuja, I don’t think any project like this has been well-funded and that shows that despite all the noise you will hear, the National Assembly has supported where it matters because this is where it matters and I think we have done that. “If you look at what has been achieved in the last two and half years in putting this building up and bringing it to completion, I think it is a remarkable achievement,” he said. He added: “I have a responsibility and a role as the head of the legislature. I have responsibility and my responsibility is beyond whatever issues. You see, you guys in the media like to hype things. The most important thing is that we must always do the right thing. “We might disagree on what those right things are but at the end of the, we must ensure that we build institutions, we support institutions and do what is right and we must continue to do that. “Unfortunately, I will not be here on Tuesday because I will be sitting and that is why I said I must come and see it. A project as huge as this that the National Assembly has supported is worth seeing.” Saraki said that the fight against corruption must continue in order to bequeath a better future to both present and up coming generations. “I think we have all said it. Corruption is something we must fight,” he said. “There is no way you can build a society without fighting corruption.” “I have always said that my own strong will is that as we fight it, we must fight it in ensuring that we strengthen the institutions and what you see here is part of the process of strengthening that institutions so that whoever comes here will know that this is what we must fight if we want to build institutions.” He described the building as impressive and commendable especially the fact that it was designed by an indigenous architect. He said: “I must say that I am very impressed. Very commendable structure, I like the fact that the architect is local; Nigerian and the quality of work done by Julius Berger is very impressive and it is a building that we should be proud of. “I think it goes to show the importance of institutional building, making institutions stronger and it makes institutions stronger. So, it is very impressive. “The details and planning is very commendable. I would commend all those who have worked towards the actualization of the structure. “From those who started it to the builder. Let me also commend members of the National Assembly that provided the funding to make it a reality. I am very impressed. It is well kept secret but it is very good. On what what the completion of the building means for continuity in governance for the country, he said: “That is why I keep saying it is not about individuals, it is about institutions and this is what we have shown here. “I think the project has gone through about three Executive Chairmen and one did not come in to say this is not my project and I must not continue. Each one has taken it as his own project. “I think that is good and that is the whole point that is important and this is something we will be proud of for many years. “In many years to come, I hope that we don’t have corruption in an environment like this but for now, I think there are many good aspects of this. “Having a Nigerian that designed this, the details are very impressive – the clinic and all the facilities – and the fact that it has gone through three different administrations; and the fact that the National Assembly has played its role and brought it to completion, I think that it is a lot of plus,” he stated. http://www.mcebisco.com.ng/2018/05/saraki-speaks-on-visit-to-new-efcc.html
