doubleDx: Question 4.

If √(Q + 5) = (Q - 1), which of the following statement is true?

1. 2Q = -2
2. Q2 = 1
3. 4Q = 16

A. 1 Only
B. 1 and 3 Only
C. 1, 2 & 3.
D. 3 Only

==========================
Solution to Question 4
==========================

First, we have to know the value(s) of Q before knowing which of the expression given is true..

√(Q + 5) = (Q - 1)
Simply square both sides to remove the square root, yielding=>
{√(Q + 5)}2 = (Q - 1)2
Q + 5 = (Q - 1)(Q - 1)
Expanding the RHS yields=>
Q + 5 = (Q - 1)(Q - 1)
Q + 5 = Q2 - 2Q + 1
Collecting like terms =>
Q2 - 3Q - 4 = 0
Factorizing the above quadratic expression yields =>
Q2 - 4Q + Q - 4 = 0
:. Q(Q - 4) + 1 (Q - 4) = 0
Thus=> Q - 4 = 0 0r Q + 1 = 0
Hence=> Q = 4 OR Q = -1

For statement 1, 2Q = -2 is true since one of the values of Q is (-1) and 2Q => 2(-1) = -2.
For statement 2, Q2 = 1 is also true, since one of the values of Q is (-1) and Q2 => (-1)2 = 1
For statement 3, 4Q = 16 is also true, since Q is also equal to 4, and 4Q => 4(4) = 16

Thus statements 1, 2, 3 are all true;

Hence, the solution => Option C. 1, 2 & 3. is the correct answer.

Note:

To Check your answer for Q = (-1),

Substitute for Q = -1 =>

√(Q + 5) = (Q - 1)

±√(-1 + 5) = (-1 - 1)

±√4 = -2

±2 = -2

Since square root is ±; hence, satisfying the equation!

Option D was a trap for careless mathematicians grin grin grin grin
