However, one thing baffles me; these league tables that continually elevate African Universities, Collages and places of technology above Nigerian institutes, why is it that students from these places never seem to outperform lowly Nigerian students in international achievements, recognition and competitions.

For example this: International Olympiad of Mathematics : http://imo2006.dmfa.si/results_itd.html
True,Nigerians outperform most africans in academics.
It's probably a function of the IQ disparity between Nigerians and the rest of africa.
Imagine what it would be like if we really invest in education and applied sciences especially, to world-class standards.

Scorpionking: That is because you are Nigerian so you hear more about the Nigerian ones . Nigeria having a much higher population(overpopulation) and more immigrants is a factor,Most people from southern africa like Namibia,Botswana etc are rather content with their country instead of escaping in droves like nigerians.
Again I think Nigerians like India and china should invest in population reduction schemes and awareness instead of bragging about higher population.higher population is something of ignorance and shame. a higher population causes 1. Unemployment 2. malnutrition /starvation 3. Crime 4. Corruption and many many more
China already put in place policies that discourage having more than one child. what policy will u suggest for nigeria.? maybe they should start exterminating the citizens......grin

Population is a double-edged sword.
The reason why china and india are economic giants today owes largely to their enormous local market and their huge skilled diasporean pool.
The question is how do we manage population as an agent of economic growth.

Well, i'm sure we can find many achievement from east and southern Africans. Look at this list of young entrepreneurs. East and Southern Africa dominate, I'm sure these guys went to those schools.

Before reaching the age of 40, ten African
entrepreneurs are among the top
millionaires in Africa. While in their 20s
and 30s, many of the young entrepreneurs
launched multi-million dollar companies
after dropping out of school, quitting their
jobs, or because Africa was in need of such
business. Both male and female, here are
ten successful young Africans who are
running top businesses in Africa.

Mohammed Dewji, Tanzania, 38
Mohammed Dewji is the CEO and primary
shareholder of one of East Africa’s largest
industrial conglomerates in East Africa
known as Mohammed Enterprise Limited
(METL). Dewji’s father, Gualm Dewji,
founded METL as a trading company.
Gualm passed the torch onto his son who
was responsible for transforming the
conglomerate from a trading house to an
industrial power company. Based on the
company website, the METL Group
represents a business with a diverse
interest in trading, agriculture,
manufacturing, energy and petroleum,
financial services, and other businesses.
The company employs over 20,000
employees and generates an annual
turnover of $2 billion dollars.

Igho Sanomi, Nigeria, 38
Since 2004, Igho Sanomi has been founder
of the Nigerian trading company, the
Taleveras Group. The Taleveras Group
offers solutions in energy, power, and
construction services. Before founding the
Taleveras Group, Sanomi earned his
bachelor’s degree in geology and mining
and rose to the position of Executive
Director with Sarian Oil and Cosmos Oil
AG, an international oil trading company.
As Executive Director, he developed
trading operations and strategic alliances
with a major international oil trading
group in Switzerland. Now as the CEO of
the Taleveras Group, Sanomi turned the
company into an internationally
recognized energy and power
conglomerate that trades more than 100
million casks of oil and several million
heaps of gas, LPG, and jet fuel. The
company has offices in London, Geneva,
Cape Town, Dubai, Ivory Coast, Abuja, and
Lagos.

Quinton van der Burgh, South Africa,
36

Quinton van der Burgh Investments is an
investment holding company founded by
Quinton van der Burgh in 2008. The
company is an investment holding
company vested in coal mining and mining
equipment. Before Quinton van der Burgh
Investments, Van de Burgh headed the
family owned business, Burgh Group
Holdings, and began various other
businesses including Voda-Telle
International. Quinton van der Burgh and
the company have also launched two
reality television shows, Sharp Shooter
which is a South African reality show
featuring the world of photography and
Clifton Shores, an unscripted drama
featuring Van de Burgh about four
American girls who leave the US to live and
work in Clifton Beach, South Africa.

Gerald Wamalwa, Kenya, 38

After quitting his job as a civil engineer,
Gerald Wamalwa pursued his desire to
create his own business and founded
Mellech Engineering and Construction Ltd,
a construction and infrastructure
company focused on building projects,
roads, water, sewage projects, civil
engineering, and infrastructure projects.
Since launching East Africa’s primary
infrastructure and construction company,
he has increased staff from one employee
to over 30 earning a company gross of
over $11 million. Along with Mellech,
Wamalwa owns a Telecommunications
Service Company named ACP Telecoms
Ltd.

Sibongile Sambo, South Africa, 39
SRS Aviation, the first black female owned
aviation company, was founded and is
managed by Sibongile Sambo in 2004. SRS
offers professional and personalized flight
options to destinations all over the world.
It includes VIP Charter, tourist charter, and
helicopter services. At a young age, Sambo
had a desire to work with planes but the
air requirement for an air hostess
prevented her from doing so. However,
her dream to work with planes became a
reality with the passing of the Black
Economic Empowerment Act in 2003. The
passing of the act enabled people with
disadvantaged backgrounds to partake in
the economic world as entrepreneurs.
After her receiving family loans and work
experience, her very own airline company
was born. Now, according to Forbes, SRS is
a great success and makes an annual
revenue of several million dollars.

Dial-A-Nerd has grown to be a company of
technicians who can repair, build, upgrade
or even replace PCs at customers’
premises. Dial-A-Nerd earns an annual

over 20 million users, and also has
invested in other leading businesses.

Actually, high population is good for Nigeria, especially if it is as a result of Nigerians. However i question how much of Nigeria's superposed 170 million is due to high birthrate and how much of it is due to migration. Right now the figures for the Nigerian population is as a result of guess work. Here's another guess work: i suspect that if a census is taken for West African Nations, and comparison made with figures taken a decade ago, there would be an anomaly. The anomaly would take the form of a steep increase in the population of Nigeria that is inversely proportional to the decline in the population of most Nations of West Africa.

Scorpionking: keep dreaming.thats the Nigerian problem, delusions of grandeur instead of reality and truth.
80Percent of those skyscrapers in dubai are empty and will be demolished in a few years,I see nothing special in Dubai but ignorant copycats.its a shame that humans can be s.tupid, why waste billions on needless vanity structures instead of nature conservation and feeding billions who are starving in Somalia,Iraq etc. Why not use that money to develop wwhere people actually live like Liberia,Congo,Nigeria etc instead of a desert.
Tallest structure just for bragging rights, such behaviors are backward and ignorant.
In the future I hope there'll be more cooperation in this useless prideful world.
I dont want to insult you but your way of thinking is damn too low.

Just because south africa is more develop doesnt make them the gaint of africa. The fact that You like the place doesnt make them the best cause you like might be my dislike.

Check out all the countries been called gaint of their various continents today and you will see the one thing they have in commom is population.

You say southafrica is develop I dont dispute that fact. But entertainment, sport and some other thing they are way behind us,so you dont just jump to conclusion because of all that.

Nigeria is called the gaint of Africa today is base on their population and you cant dispute that,we are not the best in africa yes I know but been the gaint of africa you cant take that from nigeria

Btw: have you ever been to nigeria or are you one of those that has been brainwashed by the media press

A quick advice never take anything the press just pass you about Nigeria it might just be trash

Or you sure? do you know anything about these countries and what their students achieve? I gave you that because Nigerians seem to think that they're more business savvy than others. Why is there only one Nigeria in that list? I think whatever advantage Nigeria has is due to the population (overpopulation). You find more outliers in a bigger population who do well in whatever institution they go to, but the average student is not impressive.

Use your brain my friend,I told you i'm buying a 50 acre ranch in Namibia. even if you transport new york to nigeria ,Southern Africa is where my heart is.
I have explained how to develop nigeria yet you are still yapping, cant you get into your brain that Southern Africa is naturally and in most aspect better and beautiful than west Africa? Whether or not there are whites or not,Southern Africa is much more appealing and easier to develop, they're conducive for first world development and settlement.
I wouldnt bring myself down to start exchanging Insult with cause fact is fact and you cant change it.

Nigeria is the gaint of Africa.

If you like go build your house in Southern africa and live there it still dont change the fact that Nigeria is gaint of Africa.

Everybody with his or her opinion and you cant force you opinion in others.

Scorpionking: Nigerians are ignorant about other parts of africa.Nigeria is not even 7th place in giant of Africa. I often hear you guys mocking countries like zimbabwe and namibia. Have you ever been to Zimbabwe? Zimbabwe and the rest of southern Africa are incomparable to shitty west Africa,Southern Africa like Botswana,Namibia,Swaziland,Zimbabwe and south Africa have subtropical climate like Southern California and Australia ,blue skies, rolling hills, snow capped mountains etc,4 seasons, even the nature is amazing ,that is why even white people love and settle in Southern Africa.
even without skyscrapers the southern Africa is generally more appealing.you guys need to travel more.western African climate is simply not conducive for first world development.Africa is a big continent, not every were in Africa is like Nigeria
the countries likely to be first world in Africa by 2040 are Botswana,South Africa,Namibia,Swaziland and zimbabwe
What concerns agbero with overload?
These funny South Africans and Ghanians are drinking panadol over Nigeria, while Nigerians are only concerned if the country will break up or remain as one.

The truth is that no Nigerian worries himself any more about what is happening in Africa,as long as they don't ask us for troops or money. Where is the news on C.A.R anywhere in Nigeria? We have our own internal cold war we are trying to keep from becoming an open hot war. Who is worried about South Africa or Kenya?

I really don't Fvucking care if you claim to be Zimbabwean or from Nepal, that is your headache!
Nigerians typically have passed the stage of worrying about other African countries, after SA and indeed most SADC countries have maltreated her in spite of the huge sacrifice she made on behalf of those countries.
Only South Africans and Ghanians are so worried with Nigeria and twirling and calculating all sorts of crap to say they are better than Nigeria, when the evidence to the contrary is obvious. For SA,they think Nigeria will soon become a bigger economy than SA(Which it already has) and for Ghanians they believe Nigeria dominates them completely and they would perhaps have the respect of Kenya if Nigeria was not in West Africa.

But you see, you guys are like poor people jealous of the wife of a rich man, while the woman in question is worried if her marriage is about to end in divorce! Nigerians would give back anything to have peace and live in peace. But you guys can't understand it! You are busy summing up the total effect of a united Nigeria, which may turn out to be an overly optimistic folly. Mind your own god forsaken countries while we try to sort out our own politics that threaten our country with implosion.

We have our own internal cold war we are trying to keep from becoming an open hot war. Who is worried about South Africa or Kenya?
Why must y'all bring Ghana into every fight.Ghanaians haven't done anything. So please keep our name out of it.

cjrane: I really don't Fvucking care if you claim to be Zimbabwean or from Nepal, that is your headache!

What does Nigerian dominate Ghana in? See this boastful nature is what turns people off. This topic is not even about Ghana, yet u want to drag Ghana and Ghanaians into it. Hypocrite, yet you claim you don't have time for Ghana yet very sentence has Ghana.

The dude said he is neither South African or Ghanaian. If you go to first page you will realize I was the first to counter his claims. So please leave Ghana out of it, Nigeria does not dominate Ghana in anything. So spare me

Scorpionking: you are a dumbfuck seriously
Extremely dumbb. He is going on about Southern Africans. Where have he seen Southern Africans caring about Nigeria? If Nigerians did not relocate to our sores we would not even know they exist like Chad. An average Southern African care less about other countries and are extremely introveted, they only care and travel only to countries in Southern Africa couse with in SADC you can find everthing one needs. I think he cannot read or comprehension is a huge problem to him becouse of the heat.

Namibia is a good choice and the cleanest country in Africa.

Dude, if southern Africans obey the law, how come south Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world. I remember the last world cup where European fans were warned about the high levels of crime in that country.

Jigga_man101: First of all I am not Nigerian but Ghanaian. Southern
Africans are more calmer and obey the law. I already said west Africans tend to be loud, arrogant, but we also tend to be more athletic and yes we tend to dominate when it comes to sports, music, and even education. We might have bleeped up government, go to the west and african doctors, engineers and others are west Africans. The same with sports. While Southern Africa may be more developed and others. West Africans tend to
Dominate everywhere we go.

Who gives a 4ck about southern africa or whether you are Nigerian American. There are many of us that live abroad and we love our country. If you don't love Nigeria you can move to South Africa. Sad bast*rd!

Scorpionking: listen my friend,I am a nigerian american not southafrican and I'm telling you
that Southern africa is more appealing than western africa ,China's status as giant of asia is useless because Japan and south korea are by far more appealing and better than china.
UAE and Quater are only hot in the summer, they have a Mediterranean climate, just because they have palm tree doesn't mean its like Nigeria.you guys need to travel more.
I know you think everything has to be tribal,i am nigerian and i'm telling you eye witness facts.

Scorpionking: You don't understand my friend, you think i'm joking. In this life you have to do what resonates with your heart. Southern Africa is the place that I love,my heart is in Namibia, its a punishment to my soul to not be there. The U.S is a good country but my heart is not here. I have been to Namibia and I know that's where I want to spend the rest of my life.
I want to live and die in Namibia.
I hope Namibia tightens their immigration laws so they let migrants like u out just like u suggested for USA
