Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Dares FG, Says: 'you Can’t Arrest Me Or Revoke My Bail' by 15Ebisco: 8:09am On Mar 31, 2019
The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Saturday shocked many when he said that he is not a Nigerian citizen.

Disclosing this in a programme on ‘Radio Biafra’, Kanu opined that he would challenge the court order directing his arrest in the UK.

Recall that a federal high court in Abuja yesterday revoked his bail for his continued absence in court. The same court also issued an arrest warrant against the IPOB leader.

But reacting to his arrest warrant, Kanu according to Thecable, averred, “The revocation of my bail will never ever hold; they can never convict us because we have done nothing wrong,” he said.

“Every move they make, every decision they take, I will challenge. I have instructed my lawyers, we will challenge in a competent court of law here in Britain where law actually works. I am waiting for them.

“Any day you instruct INTERPOL, that day I will take it up in court and they must answer because here is a civilised country.

“First, I am not a Nigerian citizen. Your bail revocation will never ever work. Anybody interested in revoking my bail would have asked the army what they were doing in my place.”

According to a statement from the anti-graft agency, Okupe was charged with 59 counts bordering on “money laundering and criminal diversion of funds” to the tune of N702 million.

Politics / Onnoghen: Don’t Set Nigeria Ablaze, Timi Frank Warns FG by 15Ebisco: 9:13am On Jan 14, 2019
Comrade Timi Frank, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has likened the devious effort by the present administration to subjugate judiciary under Justice Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) to “igniting an incendiary material that would completely ravage the country if not immediately reversed.”

Frank said in a statement in Abuja that the Buhari administration has fast-tracked their efforts to finally put Nigeria to social, political and economic ruination.

He said, “This is a supposedly democratic government but they are totally averse to the rule of law. Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, Deji Adeyanju and Dino Melaye, just to mention but a few, are today languishing in jails in varied subhuman conditions following the hostile and anti-people policies being executed by Buhari and his cabal.”

“Buhari and his cabal have done everything outside the law to whittle down the powers of the National Assembly through spurious charges against and trial of their presiding officers and other lawmakers and his criminal refusal to assent to critical bills like the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill and the Electoral Act 2010 Amendment Bill.

“Buhari has refused to replace ministers that have left his government thereby denying critical sections of the country of any form of representation in the Federal Executive Council as required by law.

“Buhari has illegally ensured that all heads of security agencies in the country are of northern extraction against the letters and spirit of the Federal Character principle as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Buhari has also advanced his parochial act of governance by ensuring that all the Service Chiefs who are overdue for retirement have their tenures elongated thereby frustrating the career progression of serving military personnel – a situation that has torpedoed morale in the officer cadre and consequently serious and dangerous reversals in the gains made in the fight against insurgency and other dangerous criminal elements across the country.

“He is right now seeking legal opinion on how to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police whose tenure has since expired in flagrant breach of extant laws.

“Of all his hateful, lawless rhetoric and his 97/5% nepotistic ideology, he is again desperate to remove a serving CJN – who is nowhere near his retirement age – based on sentiments which are largely religious and ethnic. Enough is enough!”

Frank added, “Today Nigerian students in universities and polytechnics across the country are languishing at home due to strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and their polytechnic counterpart due to the lackadaisical approach to education by the administration.

“Besides, N30,000 minimum wage bill is nowhere near the National Assembly for passage into law in favour of the suffering civil servants in the country. Rather than fast-track the presentation and passage of the bill, Buhari has vowed to renegotiate salaries of public servants earning above N30,000. This is a government of destruction and not of development.”

He cautioned that unless the administration “ immediately retraces its step and back off on the illegality they have chosen to undertake, the effort may spark off unfathomable resistance from the overly marginalised sections of the country capable of determining if indeed the nation wwoule remain one indivisible country as currently composed under his regime.

He called on the international community to hold Buhari and his cabal responsible for any breach of the peace which may result from their tyrannical and sadistic actions against the CJN and other Nigerians suffering from persecution under this regime.

“Nigerians are fully ready to defend their country. Enough is enough,” he stated.

Foreign Affairs / Zimbabwe Plans New Currency As Dollar Shortage Bites by 15Ebisco: 7:11am On Jan 13, 2019
Zimbabwe will introduce a new currency in the next 12 months, the finance minister said, as a shortage of U.S. dollars has plunged the financial system into disarray and forced businesses to close.

In the past two months, the southern African nation has suffered acute shortages of imported goods, including fuel whose price was increased by 150 percent on Saturday.

Zimbabwe abandoned its own currency in 2009 after it was wrecked by hyperinflation and adopted the greenback and other currencies, such as sterling and the South African rand.

But there is not enough hard currency in the country to back up the $10 billion of electronic funds trapped in local bank accounts, prompting demands from businesses and civil servants for cash which can be deposited and used to make payments.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube told a townhall meeting on Friday a new local currency would be introduced in less than 12 months.

“On the issue of raising enough foreign currency to introduce the new currency, we are on our way already, give us months, not years,” he said.

Zimbabwe’s foreign reserves now provide less than two weeks cover for imports, central bank data show. The government has previously said it would only consider launching a new currency if it had at least six months of reserves.

Locals are haunted by memories of the Zimbabwean dollar, which became worthless as inflation spiraled to reach 500 billion percent in 2008, the highest rate in the world for a country not at war, wiping out pensions and savings.

A surrogate bond note currency introduced in 2016 to stem dollar shortages has also collapsed in value.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is under pressure to revive the economy but dollar shortages are undermining efforts to win back foreign investors sidelined under his predecessor Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa told reporters on Saturday that the price of petrol had increased to $3.31 per liter from $1.32 from midnight but there would be no increase for foreign embassies and tourists paying in cash U.S. dollars.

Locals can pay via local debit cards, mobile phone payments and a surrogate bond note currency.

With less than $400 million in actual cash in Zimbabwe according to central bank figures, fuel shortages have worsened and companies are struggling to import raw materials and equipment, forcing them to buy greenback notes on the black market at a premium of up to 370 percent. (Reuters)

Politics / Issues Glossed Over In The Crucifixion Of Ekweremadu, By Law Mefor by 15Ebisco: 9:48pm On Jan 12, 2019
Since the emergence of Peter Gregory Obi, former Governor of Anambra State, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, last October, the name of the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu has been dragged around. What is being promoted even without facts is that Ekweremadu is not happy he was not the preferred choice. Now, the campaign of calumny has grown to reach that Ekweremadu for his angst does not want to play any role in the Atuku/Obi campaign and wouldn’t care if they succeed or fail.

Some of these undertakers have dismissed Ekweremadu’s sense of entitlement, querying what he has achieved as a senator representing a senatorial district in the South East to be deserving of even being consulted by the party, which they say, has done so much for him with little or no reciprocation.

Oh, really?

Come to think of it, in Social Psychology, there is what is called Displaced Aggression. It compares fairly well with an Igbo adage, which goes thus: the chicken leaves the knife, which killed it to make face to the cooking pot. Displaced aggression can occur when someone cannot aggress towards the source of incitement or provocation, so instead takes it out on something posing lesser and behaves aggressively towards another individual that had nothing to do with the initial conflict. This is the fate of Ekweremadu, it seems.

Yes, there is a narrative setting up Sen. Ike Ekweremadu for slaughter. He is being heckled into a devil’s alternatives position in the Atiku/Obi dawdling (some with good reasons say floundering) campaign – whichever option he takes he would have to take the blame if the ticket fails to deliver.

So, Ekweremadu has been an underperforming opportunist who has not represented Enugu West nay South East well? It does appear that in politics in Nigeria, the big idea remains to run whoever has anything to offer out of the way. Or, is it that some may be feeling eclipsed by the man’s towering profile and should not be left to be the only cock crowing in the yard? Or, is pull-him-down the Igbo way of doing politics?

The documentation of the achievements of Ekweremadu as a senator along with the raving testimonies of communities he brought into light from total darkness is in the public domain. A ranking honourable member from Enugu West told me that about a decade ago; most of the communities in the senatorial district were without light and access roads. But today, 70% of these communities now have light and access roads among other crucial social amenities, courtesy of Ekweremadu. Performance certainly must have another definition for his hecklers.

With over 2,000 projects and programmes and thousands of scholarships to postgraduate to his credit, Ekweremadu probably is the all-time performing senator despite the claim of those who, catching at anything, would want Ndigbo and Nigerians to believe that the senator has not done anything to deserve any honourable mention.

Enugu-Onitsha and Enugu-Port Harcourt expressways as well as 2nd Niger Bridge are the Federal Government projects in South East often called out by such persons to justify their vilification of Ekweremadu. Their argument has been that Ekweremadu as Deputy Senate President for so long ought to have influenced their timely completion.

Such people need to be reminded that Sen. Ike Ekweremadu is a legislator (not President or Governor) and the role of the legislature is to ensure that new and ongoing projects receive adequate funds during budgeting. And a cursory check at past Nigeria budgets would show these three critical projects have received billions of naira in appropriation in the last one decade.

However, budgetary allocation is one thing and actual releases and cash backing is quite another. Budget implementation is essentially an executive responsibility. During oversights performed by committees of both Houses of the National Assembly, the much that can be achieved by the legislature is ensuring that the released funds are ploughed into the stipulated projects accordingly.

Let it be known by such detractors that the legislature cannot force the executive arm to release funds, and since 1999 the nation returned to democracy, capital expenditure has been hardly implemented up to 50%.

Now, fairly understanding the workings of government and the roles of legislators in budget formulating, passing, funding, and completion of projects, one can easily see that such narratives being promoted against Ekweremadu and other South East law makers have only glossed over certain facts, thus showing such ill-conceived positions as instigated by grievances over personal losses rather than common good.

They could blame Ekweremadu and other South East lawmakers only if these strategic FG projects in the South East were not captured and well provided for in the budgets over the years. Apart from budgeting process, a legislator can only lobby and lobby. And I am aware Ekweremadu particularly has done that greatly and several federal projects in the South East came through the efforts of a few like him.

It is equally to the credit of Ekweremadu’s sagacious leadership that the South East now boasts of an international airport. It is on record that he led the delegation of the South East Senators to request the long-awaited and politicised Enugu International Airport from the late President Umaru Yar’Adua in November 2007. Yar’Adua instantly directed the former Minister of Transport, Diezani Allison-Madueke, to issue a statement designating the Akanu Ibiam Airport an international aviation facility.

How many know that since the FG said it had no funds to immediately capture the upgrade of the facility in the 2008 budget, Ekweremadu mobilised the Enugu State Caucus of the National Assembly to channel all the funds for their constituency projects to the airport project? Yar’Adua, who was touched by this sheer selflessness and determination, then directed that the funds they so consolidated be augmented to get the project into the 2008 budget.

Even when contract for the airport upgrade was finally awarded, former Minister of Aviation, Babatunde Omotoba, told a rather baffled South East, while on the inspection of the upgrade project in 2009, that he was not aware Enugu had been designated an international airport. Thus, it was after lobbies that led to the appointment of Mrs. Fidelia Njeze and subsequently Senator Stella Oduah (and later Osita Chidoka) as Ministers of Aviation following the emergence of former President Goodluck Jonathan that real progress was made. lt was Njeze’s first assignment in collaboration with Ekweremadu that ensured the gazetting of the Enugu Airport by the FG as an international air facility.

Appointments of Senators Hope Uzodimma and Ayogu Eze as Senate Committee Chairmen on Aviation and Works respectively, also brought legislative pressure to bear and were no coincidences with Ekweremadu as Vice Chairman of Selection Committee of the Senate.

It is difficult to find a legislator, who has achieved so much even as a Senate President. Such other projects to his credit include the several federal roads connecting Enugu State and Ebonyi State. The truth is that the reason Jonathan could not construct the East-West Road after six years; the reason Obasanjo could not construct Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in eight years; and the reason Abuja-Minna Road is in bad shape despite producing Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar is the same reason Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, and other signature projects were not done – executive priority. Those fighting the coming of Nigeria President of Igbo extraction should please note.

Ekweremadu snatched the position of Deputy Senate President from the APC. Since then, the ruling party has fought tooth and nail to oust him along with Senate President, Bukola Saraki. The Police, the EFCC and the Judiciary have been deployed to hounding Ekweremadu. On the floor of the Senate, the ruling Party offered Ekweremadu the respite of joining the APC as a pre-condition for truce and peace. For his commitment to the survival and repositioning of the PDP, he refused taking the cheap route many like Godswill Akpabio gladly took to peace.

It is on record that the IG’s Special Squad invaded his official guest house in search of nonexistent stockpile of arms. Police also held him hostage at his official residence on the day APC wanted to forcefully remove him and Saraki as well as prevent the defection of APC Senators to PDP. Even the Presidential Panel headed by Obono-Obla, a man with questionable WAEC certificate, was also unleashed on Ekweremadu for refusing to disobey the Constitution and kowtow to that body unknown to law.

The FG arraigned him and Saraki in 2015 over trumped-up forgery of Senate Standing Rules, a crime they weren’t even in a position to commit. It didn’t also matter that the police investigation report filed as Proof of Evidence didn’t mention Ekweremadu or Saraki or that the report was a subject of litigation. FG eventually withdrew the lawsuit since it had no iota of truth against both men.

Yet, Ekweremadu refused to submit to APC or betraying his party, the PDP, the same party, which now postures as if he has no stake in it. Otherwise, why would the PDP constitute the Campaign Council the first time without including Ekweremadu, and rejigging it later grudgingly to include him without any role?

Those who claim Sen. Ike Ekweremadu has not been playing any visible role in the Atiku/Obi campaign should tell Nigerians in what capacity he should be doing so. Are they saying Ekweremadu should just throw himself at the campaign?

If truth be told; the PDP has simply decided to take its chance with the returnee members who once deserted the party and left it carcass and President Goodluck Jonathan stranded. Who does not know where the rain started beating him will never know where he took shelter. There wouldn’t have been any party to return to were it not somebody like Sen. Ike Ekweremadu. Let him be!

Politics / Bayelsa: Sylva, Dickson Renew Rivalry Ahead 2019 Polls by 15Ebisco: 11:12am On Jan 12, 2019
Ex-Governor of Bayelsa, Chief Timipre Sylva, and incumbent Governor, The Honourable Seriake Dickson, have renewed their rivalry, taking their political differences to the public domain ahead of the general elections.

Sylva had ruled Bayelsa under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 2007 and 2012 and later joined the later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014 and became APC guber candidate in the 2015 election.

Sylva had alleged that Gov Dickson was bent of misrepresenting, pitching him on a collision course with the Presidency with a campaign of calumny based on falsehood, an allegation the Dickson camp promptly denied.

Sylva in a statement issued Friday in Yenagoa by his Media Assistant Julius Bokoru dismissed Dickson’s denial as ‘feeble’.

“We have read the feeble denial by Gov Henry Seriake Dickson, about his plot to create an artificial war between the Presidency and former Bayelsa Governor and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Timipre Sylva.

“Dickson is shocked because the good people of Bayelsa alerted Sylva. Our statement was clear and direct: Dickson seeks to create a wedge between Sylva and the Presidency through a fake news campaign

“We have now foiled that desperate plan. We thank the good people of Bayelsa for standing with Sylva and the APC, for standing for truth and integrity.

“We applaud and commend them for standing against those who think governance is about propaganda and psychological warfare.

“The issue here is not about Sylva but a campaign of fake news to undermine the Presidency.

“The purpose for Dickson, of course, is to bolster the faltering fortunes of his party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and in the country,” the statement read in part.

Sylva said that Dickson thinks it is man rather than God that determines another man’s fate. Hence he speaks of someone’s “lifeline in politics” and “the state of mood of his political masters”.

According to him, Dickson needs to be reminded that the prevailing national mood, today, is the presidential elections scheduled for the next few weeks.

“Dickson speaks of conscience, but conscience is when you pay civil servants their salaries promptly, conscience is when you don’t attack a courthouse like a thug.

“Conscience is when you don’t elevate violence to the status of a government policy, conscience is when you don’t impoverish a once thriving people and state.

“Conscience is when you don’t fail abysmally at even basic levels of governance, conscience is when you don’t become a nightmare for those you are supposed to govern and conscience is when you don’t tell low level lies,” Bokoru said.

Dickson, who reacted through a statement by his Special Adviser, Media Relations, FIdelis Soriwei, said that “Sylva cuts the gnawing image of a troubled man screaming and fleeing at the sight of nobody.”

Dickson said that politicians who desecrated the opportunities to serve, to abuse state resources to lure Bayelsa youths to violence would face condemnation in the courts of posterity.

“Again, we are constrained to react to spurious claims and distractions from Sylva and his cohorts who are bent on misinforming the Nigerian public.

“It is indeed unfortunate that Sylva has descended to the level of scavenging for imagined information in the gutters for the purpose of attacking the Governor.

“While it is the standard for genuine leaders and serious members need politicians to respond to real issues, Sylva is yet to recover from bitterness occasion by his excruciating rejection by his own people.

“Now that Sylva knows that a leaked audio is not emanating from Bayelsa, he may try catch some sleep. Dickson has great plans for Bayelsa and Sylva is a costly distraction no leader would want to afford.

“The recent invectives from Sylva are a product of Blackmail inspired by consequences of some tormenting sense of guilt.

“When Sylva talks about conscience, Bayelsans shiver! There couldn’t have been better way to advertise hypocrisy.

“While Sylva is worrying over the imagined consequences of a badly buried corpse, we are mindful to remind him once again that the only thing in hot pursuit of him is his shadow.

“When he looks back, he shall find no Dickson. The Governor is miles ahead of him,” Dickson stated.

Politics / Osinbajo, Ambode, Sanwo-olu, Others Take Door-to-door Campaign To Alimosho by 15Ebisco: 4:02am On Jan 12, 2019
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, took the door-to-door campaign for this year’s elections to Alimosho area of Lagos West senatorial zone.

In their entourage were the senator representing Lagos West; Solomon Olamilekan Adeola; immediate past governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and Special Assistance on Political Matters to the President, Babafemi Ojudu, among other

Speaking to the crowd of supporters at Greenland Stadium in Abesan Estate, Ipaja, Osinbajo urged the APC members to work tirelessly for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election and other candidates’ victory in the elections.

He said Alimosho is very crucial to APC, as the largest council with votes catchment in Lagos State, adding: “There are votes in Alimosho. We should all go out and vote on February 16 for Buhari. We are expecting large votes from Alimosho, which has the largest voting population.”Ambode, in his address, said the area is very crucial to APC’s victory, saying it is important to re-elect Buhari as President, Sanwo-Olu and other candidates of the party in the next election.

“You can see all of us coming together to campaign. It is a complete house and we are all united to work for APC’s victory in Lagos State.”Sanwo-Olu and Adeola said the Buhari-led APC administration has performed credibly and should be re-elected, saying the party was in Alimosho to solicit for votes for the incumbent and other candidates.

Business / Alleged $8bn Sanction: MTN, FG Settle Out Of Court by 15Ebisco: 9:10am On Jan 11, 2019
The Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos has entered as judgement the settlement terms in a suit filed by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited against the Federal Government.

MTN had challenged the $8,134,312,397.63 demanded from it by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over alleged forex remittance infractions.

In the suit, the telecoms firm asked the court to restrain the CBN and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) from imposing punitive sanctions on it.

On the other hand, the apex bank had accused MTN Nigeria of improper dividend repatriations and demanded that $8.1 billion be returned “to the coffers of the CBN”.

When the case came up in court on Thursday, MTN’s lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun, informed Justice Saliu Saidu that parties have resolved the dispute amicably.

He said the terms of the settlement were filed in on December 28, 2018.

CBN’s counsel, Mr Henry Ejiofor, also confirmed to the judge that both parties have settled out of court.

He, thereafter, urged the court to enter the terms of settlement as judgment.

In his ruling, Justice Saidu thanked the parties for not wasting precious judicial time by going through the rigours of a trial.

He adopted the terms of settlement as the judgment of the court and struck out the AGF’s name from the suit.

The terms of the settlement were not read in open court and Channels Television was unable to get a copy of the document as at the time of this report.

However, we will keep you updated as soon as we get the details.

The Federal Government had accused MTN of unpaid taxes on foreign payments and imports, asking it to pay approximately $2 billion in relation to the taxes.

According to the CBN, MTN and four banks deliberately flouted the “laws and regulations … including the Foreign Exchange (Monitoring and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1995 and the Foreign Exchange Manual, 2006.”

The banks allegedly colluded with MTN, using irregular Certificates of Capital Importation (CCI) to illegally remit foreign exchange abroad.

The four banks were slammed with a combined N5.87 billion fine.

MTN had denied the allegations and subsequently filed the suit to challenge it. (Channels TV)

Politics / Saraki Alleges Massive Fraud In The Oil Sector by 15Ebisco: 9:41am On Jan 10, 2019
Senate President Bukola Saraki has alleged that there is massive fraud within the oil sector.

In an interview with Channels Television’s Seun Okinbaloye, the lawmaker said applying subsidy on assumption that Nigeria consumes fifty million litres (50million litres) of fuel a day, is fraudulent.

Saraki said in the Jonathan administration subsidy was based on an assumption that the nation consumes 30million litres of fuel daily.

He added that he and some other lawmakers warned that the Jonathan government was condoning corruption “by over importing fuel and because of that we were losing a lot of money”.

The Senate President said the present government instead of changing the process, jerked up the importation by 20 million litres extra.

He said, “you would have thought that a government that was to fight corruption and prevent leakages would even if you are going to continue subsidy, ensure that it is better managed.”

Saraki said there is no way Nigerians can consume 50million litres a day, “it is just money being stolen,” he alleged.

He further argued that there is almost no way that President Muhammadu Buhari is not aware of what is going on within his government, stressing that the Senate has investigated the issue but “we have an environment where agencies of government are emboldened to disregard the National Assembly, it is a big issue”.

The director general of the Atiku/PDP presidential campaign said the lawmakers have called for the inclusion of subsidy in the budget but that request has lingered for two years and President Buhari has only just agreed to bring it in.

He said, “This kind of decisions have led to leakages and this is the root of corruption”.

Politics / Why I Have Not Changed Service Chiefs — Buhari by 15Ebisco: 4:14pm On Jan 09, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has given reasons why he has not changed the service chiefs. Buhari in an interview on Arise TV Monday night said that “the head [him] has to be very careful on the removal of the service chiefs because you don’t know [the] ambition of the ones coming up.”

My understanding of security is that, when you have a case of emergency, you have to be careful, with tampering with the head of services. This is again one of my personal experiences. I have been a governor, I have been a minister, I have been a head of state, I came back, I tried to come back to this office three times but lucky on the fourth time,” Buhari said.

“I am measuring the options critically, when you have a case of emergency, if you don’t wait for an appropriate time to do it, then you create competition within the service, there are so many ambitious people waiting, only one man can be chief of army staff in the army, only one man can be the inspector-general of police. Don’t forget that it was this administration that appointed all the three.”

“I didn’t know them on [a] personal basis, I followed records and thought I picked the best then, of course, their performance may be disappointing but I accept responsibility for not changing them. My reason is based on my own experience.”

Speaking on Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, who was expected to have retire on January 3 said “I don’t think I’m afraid of him (Ibrahim Idris). I will take action.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced Egypt as the new hosts of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Only Egypt and South Africa indicated interests to host the 2019 finals after the rights were taken away from Cameroon late last year.

According to CAF, Cameroon was not ready to host a successful and expanded 24-team tournament and that necessitated the search for new hosts.

Before this latest chance, Egypt hosted Africa’s biggest football tournament a couple of times and the Pharaohs remain the most successful team in AFCON history.

Egypt and Nigeria will be starting off preparations for the 2019 AFCON with a friendly match between themselves.

Celebrities / Yemi Alade’s Manager Speaks On Yemi Alade And Tiwa Savage’s Rivalry by 15Ebisco: 10:05pm On Jan 06, 2019
Recently, two of the biggest female African music stars in Nigeria and Africa, Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage, appeared to have a fight on social media over the size of their buttocks. The singers are not known to be friends, which perhaps made fans to tag them as rivals.

But Alade’s long-time manager, Taiye Aliu, said there was no rivalry between both singers. He said, “We are focused solely on music; we have no time for rivalry or anything of that sort. The sky is so big for everyone to fly. Do you think there is a rivalry between Femi Otedola and Aliko Dangote? Yemi Alade doesn’t consider Tiwa Savage a rival.”

Affirming that 2018 was an amazing year for Alade as she had the opportunity to take her music to new places across the globe, Aliu said, “The only thing is to put in more work; it is never enough. As an artiste, you will always want to have more impact on your community and the world. Right now, Yemi Alade is not just a Nigerian but an African ambassador too.”

Aliu also said Alade never took criticisms of her music personally, saying that “all she does is to work harder.”

Politics / Amina Zakari: The Reason Why Buhari Has Vindicated Us – PDP by 15Ebisco: 5:28pm On Jan 06, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization, PPCO, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari's induction of a between marriage association with Amina had vindicated its position that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC boss couldn't be trusted with the assemblage of the 2019 presidential decision results.

In an announcement on Saturday by the PPCO's Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP asked the President to talk more on his association with Amina.

As indicated by the gathering, it was absolutely untrustworthy and improper for an umpire to demand administering a challenge notwithstanding when her unprejudiced nature was called to address.

The announcement understands, "It is presently evident that notwithstanding the relationship by proclivity, President Buhari likewise has an affiliation association with Amina Zakari and has not denied that he begun his initial adolescence in Amina Zakari's dad's home.

"President Buhari's permission has viably settled that the PDP has not been deceiving everyone on the inappropriateness of including Mrs. Amina Zakari in the examination of Presidential decision results, not to mention being named to head the last assurance of the Presidential race.

"It is absolutely untrustworthy and unethical for an umpire to demand administering a challenge notwithstanding when her fair-mindedness is called to address.

"Indeed, even in the legal executive, judges recuse themselves in cases including parties they have liking with. Mrs. Amina Zakari must, in this way, recuse herself, if the 2019 presidential race must be sound."

Politics / Boko Haram: Shettima Explains Role In War Against Terrorists In Borno by 15Ebisco: 9:20pm On Jan 05, 2019
Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has reacted to criticisms of his handling of the Boko Haram insurgency.

A statement by his spokesman, Isa Gusau, said Shettima spoke on Saturday on an Arise News programme.

According to Gusau, Shettima explained that his government from 2013 to date, remained the sole financiers of hundreds of successful operations against Boko Haram carried out by more than 20,000 volunteers of the Civilian JTF.

Gusau quoted his principal as saying the Civilian JTF play crucial roles in intelligence gathering, easy identification and arrest of suspected insurgents and supporting the military in the war fronts.

The spokesman said it was a laughable irony that in recent days some “mischief makers are doing everything possible to smear Governor Shettima over the Boko Haram crisis, whereas the same mischief makers regularly acknowledge the roles played by patriotic members of the civilian JTF”

“They deliberately ignored the fact that in the last six years, Governor Shettima has been the sole person giving approvals for the operational vehicles and logistics, recruitment, training, payment of allowances, kitting and surveillance equipment to these over 20,000 heroes, under the Civilian JTF that have given everything to the fight against Boko Haram.

“The mischief makers ignore that back in 2013, it was Governor Shettima who drove the process of getting making office of the National Security Adviser to approve the operational activities of the Civilian JTF and he has remained the only one funding all their operations including the coordination of their recruitment and deployments after clearance by the DSS.

“The same Governor approves funds to support gallant members of the Civilian JTF including allocation of lands to the to own houses so as to encourage them and guarantee their future” Gusau noted.

“Only last month, the Chief of Army Staff at the closing of his annual conference in Maiduguri and before the media, described as “overwhelming”, the commitment of Governor Kashim Shettima to the Nigerian Army in the fight against Boko Haram.

“Similarly, in 2014, then Director of Operations at the Defence headquarters, Major General Lawrence Ndugbane (now retired) said before the media, that Kashim Shettima is one of the Governors who helps the military to generate actionable intelligence through the Governor’s regular interactions with community leaders in Borno State. )

“These are all on record. So, attempts by anyone to change these public records will, like previous other attempts, become futile exercises,” Gusau added.

Politics / 2019 Election: Amaechi Identifies Difference Between APC, PDP Big Men by 15Ebisco: 4:17am On Jan 05, 2019
The Director General, Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, has revealed the difference between rich men in the All Progressives Congress, APC, and those in the other parties.

Ameachi, a former Governor of Rivers State, said that the coming elections in Kwara, and indeed Nigeria, would be between the rich and the poor.

Amaechi said that while rich men in the APC are all progressives and care about the poor, those in PDP and other parties don’t.

Amaechi, who is also the Transportation Minister, made the statement in Ilorin at the inauguration of APC ward canvassers ahead of 2019 general elections in the state.

According to him, “We are gathered here today to peacefully take over power from the rich and hand over to the poor. That is what APC stands for.

“We join the poor to say we must take power from the rich. We join the poor to say ‘enough is enough.’

“The elite and the thieves have ganged-up against APC. But they don’t have the power because they don’t have the number.

“The number is with the poor and the poor must rise to vote on that day.

“This election is between the rich and the poor. Now, the poor have realized that they are tired. If at the end of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government we had $58 billion, where is the money now?

“How much did state governments collect? How much did the Federal Government collect? What did they do with the money?

“When I was a student at the University of Port Harcourt, I predicted that one day, the poor will rise.

“It will get to a point when the poor will begin to eat big men. What you are seeing in Kwara is a modern Tunisia. It was a poor man that started the Arab Spring in Tunisia.

“Today, Kwara is leading the revolution to change Nigeria. Power must return to the poor. One problem we all have is that even we, the poor, are being deceived by them.

“Big men are in all the parties o! The difference between other parties and ours is that the big men in our party are all progressives. Other parties don’t care; they want to even collect what the poor is eating from them.”
