The Kwara State governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has approved the employment of 1,850 basic and senior secondary school teachers in the state to fill teacher shortages in sciences subjects and create fresh employment in the state. Ahmed approved the employment following separate requests by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (TSC), according to a statement by his senior special assistant on Media and Communication, Dr Muyideen Akorede on Wednesday.

The two organisations based their requests on existing teacher shortages in the state, especially in English Language and Science subjects. According to the statement, Governor Ahmed approved the recruitment of 1,500 SUBEB teachers and 350 Senior Secondary School teachers.

The teacher shortages in the state persist despite recent interventions by the state government through its Kwara State Youth Empowerment Program (KWAYEP) and the federal governments NPower Scheme, prompting the state governor to grant the fresh approval for employment. Ahmed also directed SUBEB and TSC to ensure that due process is followed in the recruitment while ensuring spread across the 193 wards in the state.

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike has declared that there will be consequences if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) succumbs to pressure from some PDP presidential aspirants to move the party’s national convention away from Port Harcourt. He further declared that the state will not support any presidential aspirant who is sabotaging the economy of the state by fighting the hosting of the party’s presidential primary in Port Harcourt. Wike spoke yesterday when Gombe State Governor and PDP Presidential Aspirant, Ibrahim Dankwambo, paid him a consultative visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The governor warned that Rivers people will teach the party a bitter lesson if it allows planted desperate presidential aspirants to scuttle the hosting of the presidential primary in Port Harcourt as agreed by all leaders of the party. He stated at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, no presidential aspirant opposed the choice of Port Harcourt as venue. Wike further stated any presidential aspirant fighting Rivers State should forget about the support of the state, during and after the national convention.The governor said: “Let me warn the party, if you dare, Rivers State will teach the party a lesson.

Those days have passed when they took Rivers State for granted. Nobody can use and dump Rivers State”. “No lresidential aspirant can use and dump Rivers State. We never lobbied for it, we never asked for it, but it will boost the economy of the state. People will make money”. “Those who are against Rivers people from making money to improve their businesses, will not get our support.” He stated that whether the National Convention holds in Jigawa or Adamawa states, the winner preferred by the delegates will emerge.

The governor pointed out that there are persons who are not Presidential Materials, but have bought forms simply because the Presidency is zoned to the North. He wondered why a Presidential Aspirant would declare that he is uncomfortable with Port Harcourt as a venue, but would love Rivers’ oil. The governor stated that at the appropriate time, he will reveal the names of presidential aspirants working with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to scuttle the presidential primary.

He stated that no presidential aspirant will use a few members of the Board of Trustees of PDP to scuttle the decision of the party to host the presidential primary in Port Harcourt. Wike described Dankwambo as eminently qualified to contest the position of President, saying that the Gombe state governor will be considered when Rivers delegates meet to decide on who to support. Earlier, Gombe State Governor and PDP presidential aspirant, Dr Ibrahim Dankwambo called on Rivers PDP delegates to support his aspiration as he has the capacity to set the country on the path of growth.

A former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to save the state from unnecessary tension.

The politician said INEC should declare Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the governorship election held on Saturday.

Oyinlola spoke to journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State capital on Monday.

He noted that neither INEC nor any political party had the right to subvert the constitution and the peace of the state.

He said, “INEC’s position is double-standard. The same INEC had returned winners in recent election with similar cases, especially in Kogi and Bauchi states.

“I call on INEC to reverse itself because the constitution and the Electoral Act are very clear on this matter. The winner must be declared forthwith.”

No fewer than five persons have been reported dead in an auto crash along Birninkudu-Kano road in Birninkudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The incident was said to have occurred around 7pm on Sunday at Kwanar Gangare.

The Jigawa Police Command spokesman, SP Abdu Jinjiri, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

He said that an articulated vehicle and three other cars were involved in the accident.

Jinjiri, however, promised to provide more information on the accident later.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Lagos State, Tunde Balogun, has stated that there was no gang-up against Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

He also said the other aspirants challenging Ambode for the governorship ticket of the party were all qualified.

The APC Chairman said there was no crisis in the state chapter of the party, adding that it was normal in a democratic setting to have more than one aspirant for a particular position.

Balogun also claimed that there was no disagreement between Governor Ambode and national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Fielding questions from Punch, Balogun insisted that there was nothing like a gang-up against Ambode, adding that groups coming out to endorse a particular aspirant does not amount to gang up against the other aspirants.

According to him, “I can’t see any storm anywhere. It is not unusual in a truly democratic setting to have three or more aspirants that would be contesting a particular office.

“The fact that we have two other aspirants who want to be governor, apart from the sitting governor (Akinwunmi Ambode), who is seeking reelection, is normal.

“The two other candidates (Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat) are equally loyal and committed members of the party and they have the constitutional right to contest any elective office in the country.

“I don’t really see anything abnormal in what is happening in Lagos right now.

“It will be wrong of the party to prevent others from aspiring to any position of their choice.

“What is happening right now is democracy in action. It is the right of anybody, without anybody stopping them or giving them any inhibition, to come out and exercise their rights.

“Stopping others because the incumbent wants to go for a second term will amount to being dictatorial and we are progressives.

“There is nothing like a gang-up anywhere. The fact that some groups are coming out to endorse a particular candidate does not amount to a gang-up. It simply shows that we are truly democratic.

“The constitution of our party provides for anybody wishing to aspire to any position of his or her choice without any inhibition.

“So, the fact that you see some people coming together, even as elected officials, to endorse a particular candidate, shows that democracy is in action.

“I don’t know what you mean by reconciling Asiwaju and Ambode. I am not aware of any disagreement between them.”

Some hoodlums were on Saturday arrested by soldiers for allegedly disrupting voting at Ward 2 Unit 2 in the Ireti Ayo, Ilesa West Local Government Area of Osun State during the governorship election.

The Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps in the state, Mr Emmanuel Attah, confirmed this to newsmen in Osogbo, the state capital

He said the leader of the hoodlums was arrested after he stormed the polling unit and harassed NYSC members on duty.

Attah said the harassment led to a temporary stoppage of the election but normalcy was restored when he arrived and alerted some soldiers on patrol of the misconduct.

He said, “Some hoodlums came and started harassing corps members at Ward 2 Unit 2 in Ireti Ayo.

“Voting was temporarily suspended because of this.

“We informed some soldiers on patrol and upon seeing the soldiers, they ran away but their leader was arrested and taken away.

“The arrest of the miscreant was a relief to the voters there. They were very happy and voting resumed and everything went on peacefully after that.”

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has alleged attempts by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to disenfranchise voters in the ongoing Osun state election.

The party also claimed that the ruling party was already sharing money to voters at ward 8, unit 3 Ota Efun in Olorunda local government.

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, made the claims in a series of tweets on Saturday.

“My attention has also been drawn to attempts to disenfranchise voters in @OfficialPDPNig strongholds by distributing malfunctioning card readers between 8am-12pm.They also seek to deploy intimidation tactics to scare voters, hijack boxes and indulge in massive vote buying between 12-4pm.,” he tweeted.

“We are totally at a loss as to why @OfficialAPCNg Governors will leave their respective states to invade Osun state on the eve of Election Day.

“The plot is to rig the elections in favour of the APC candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, who is apparently very unpopular in the state.

First Military Governor of Kwara state, Brigadier General Femi David Lasisi Bamigboye is dead.

The retired General died at the age of 78 in Lagos after a brief illness.

David Bamigboye is an Igbomina man from Omu Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.

His younger brother is Theophilus Bamigboye, a retired military officer.

Funeral rites are expected to be announced later.

Bamigboye ruled Kwara from May 1967 to July 1975, after it had been divided from the old Northern Region during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon.

Born 7 December, 1940, he preceded Hassan Katsi and was succeeded by late Ibrahim Taiwo.

In 1968, Bamigboye created the Kwara State Ministry of Education, with a department to handle Scholarship/Bursary matters.

In 1971 he announced a decision to establish the Kwara State Polytechnic, which came into existence in 1972.

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi has sacked his Special Assistant (SA) on Primary Health (Ebonyi Central Zone), Mrs Stephanie Ugo-Chima, for absconding from duty for over a month.

Dr. Hyginus Nwokwu, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abakaliki during a joint state Executive Council.

Nwokwu said that Ugo-Chima absconded from her duties and responsibilities as an aide to the governor within the period which necessitated the relieving of her duty.

“The insinuation that her sack was political is unfounded because all appointment or sack of public officers is political.

“There are laid down rules for such appointments, but the civil service rules are not applied in these cases because such appointees are not civil servants,” he said.

The SSG also clarified the issue of the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in the state, Mrs Elizabeth Ogbaga, who had also not been seen in her official duties and public functions for long.

“Ogbaga as far as the office of the SSG is concerned, is on leave,” he said.

“A Local Government Area (LGA) development centre coordinator and two LGA advisory committee members were also sworn-in during the council’s meeting,” he said.

The Ijaw Council of Elders in Delta State, otherwise known as Izon Okosutu has said that the silence of Itsekiri, Isoko and Ijaw ethnic groups made it possible for Sen James Manager to remain in the Senate since 2003.

Chairman of the group, Chief Bare Etolor said this yesterday in Warri while presenting the Ijaw position on rotation in the zone.

His words: “Given the obvious fact that all the processes leading to the 2019 elections by the various political parties are almost concluded, the rotation of the senatorial seat among the three ethnic groups (Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri) should take effect after the next election, with the winner kick- starting the proposed rotation agreement. If by a stroke of luck, any Ijaw candidate from any of the political parties wins, the winner will serve only one tenure.

“But if a winner emerges from either the Itsekiri or Isoko, the person will by this rotation arrangement serve only two tenures, before passing to either of the two”.

In his remark chief, Brown Mene who presented the Itsekiri’s position as it affects the Senatorial Seat in 2019, traced the history of the senatorial rotation agreement to the first republic and asserted that they feel it’s the turn of Itsekiri to produce Delta South Senator in 2019.

While stressing that they “will demand this time that the representative should be reporting to us as 3Is”, Chief Mene declared that Itsekiri leadership does not believe that their Ijaw counterparts sent James Manager to remain in the senate for this long”.

Recall that the leadership of Isoko Development Union, IDU has affirmed their support for Itsekiri candidacy as far as the senatorial position is concerned in 2019.

28-year-old Nurudeen Lliyasu, who climbed a telecommunication mast in Abuja, to protest the poor economy in the country, has reportedly descended.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the man was seen on top of the mast at about noon on Wednesday at AYA, Abuja.

He was reported to have erected posters with different inscriptions along the AYA road and at the foot of the mast, which read: “Another hope betrayed battered, mutilated with a collapsed economy.”

Others include, “inflation and hunger are killing Nigerians”, “unemployment continues unabated”, and “Nigeria is on the precipice of collapse”, among others.
Nurudeen Lliyasu said he would remain on the mast for the next seven days, adding that he was ready to sacrifice his life for the progress of the country.

“I am on a hunger strike to protest and register my grievances about the condition of the country; I will remain here for the next seven days and I do not mind if I die here.

“If my dying on this mast will change the economy of this country, then I choose to die for others to live a good life.

“I have not eaten for days and also other Nigerians, if I die on this mast I am not worried, no roads in the states only in the city of Abuja you can see good roads.

‘’The doctors have said that a man can survive only on water without food for some days, I believe I can and if I cannot I will die.”

Lliyasu said that there was nothing working in the country, adding that the education, health system, infrastructure are all in bad shape.
He said that he was into the transport business and other businesses.

Mr Ayuba Luka, the security man in the area, reported that Lliyasu approached him that he wants to climb the mast he warned him against it.

“He came to me and I warned him not to climb that mast, but when I left the site he sneaked in and climbed it.

“I was shocked when I came back and saw him on the topmost part of the mast, I have called my supervisor to come and take necessary action.”

President Muhammadu Buhari will officially receive his presidential Nomination Form and the Expression of Interest on Tuesday, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.

The event will hold at the new Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at 11.30a.m.

The forms will be handed over to Buhari by the socio-political group, the Nigeria Consolidation Ambassadors Network, NCAN, which purchased it for the president.

Recall that NCAN had last week Wednesday purchased the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for Buhari.

NCAN’s National Coordinator, Sanusi Musa, had said the group could not hand over the documents to the president immediately after purchase due to his China trip.

He said: “The president is just back, so we have not yet presented the form to the president. We are in the process of sending it. We will send it to him.’’

A man identified as Amandianaeze, has been beaten to coma for killing the last born of his lover for allegedly stealing his mom’s N20 and using it to buy biscuit in Agbaravo by Omuma Rd, Aba, Abia State.

It was gathered that the money was stolen yesterday and the boy was reprimanded, but Eze resumed beating him today and hit his head against a wall, leading to his instant death.

Upon confirming his death, neighbours descended on Eze and beat him till he lost consciousness. They also tried setting him ablaze but they only got kerosene.


However, before they could get petrol, police had arrived the scene to take the deceased and Eze away. The suspect is said to have been staying with the mom of the deceased for over 2 years, but they are not married.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Friday stated that he is sure of emerging as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of the party’s October 6 primaries.

He, therefore, enjoined Nigerians to stop President Muhammadu Buhari’s plan to continue in office beyond 2019.

Saraki was speaking in Owerri, the Imo state capital, where he met with PDP stakeholders.

The Senate President also said that voting out Buhari is the “only way to ensure national unity and security”.

According to him, “I will continue to fight for the masses. We have to change the leadership. We need a leadership that would ensure justice and fair distribution of national appointments. As a president, I will ensure everybody has a seat on his table. I will restore global reputation. Countries are built by handwork and vision.

“South East people are hardworking, their entrepreneurial spirit is wonderful. As a president, I will partner south East to emerge the next tiger of Africa in business. You don’t build what you don’t have. I therefore appeal to the delegates to vote wisely.

“We must change Buhari with a man that has capacity ,integrity and vision in order to realise our potentials. I believe in restructuring that would give States opportunities to realise their potentials. I promoted made in Aba products.As a president i will support local businesses and ensure property.

“We need to have a President that will ensure prosperity, nobody wants a hand out. I am committed to the development of Southeast because it is in the best interest of Nigeria. You need the President that has the youthfulness, the energy to deliver.”

The Yobe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Govenor Ibrahim Gaidam to anoint his successor.

A meeting of party leaders on Thursday agreed that the party’s candidate would be chosen through direct or indirect primaries.

A communique signed by the deputy governor, Abubakar Aliyu, said Governor Gaidam would be allowed to single-handedly decide who will be the APC governorship candidate.

“The meeting resolves that a discretion is given to HE Alh. (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam to present a competent and acceptable person as the Gubernatorial Flag bearer of our great party (APC) in the forthcoming 2019 general elections for our dear state,” it read.

The Yobe APC leaders also agreed that the governor would get the ticket to contest the Yobe East senatorial election in 2019.

The seat is currently being occupied by a former governor of the state, Bukar-Abba Ibrahim, who did not attend the meeting.

However, Ibrahim’s wife, Khadijat Bukar-Abba, the current minister of state – foreign affairs, was at the meeting.

Indications have emerged that leading governorship aspirant in Imo State, Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, and immediate-past national organising secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Osita Izunaso, are set to dump the ruling party for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA).

Both men were at the APGA national headquarters yesterday for a closed-door meeting with the national chairman of APGA, Mr. Victor Oye, in Abuja.

The two politicians are currently engaged in running battle with Governor Rochas Okorocha for the control of APC structure in Imo State.

Though both men left the Secretariat without stating their mission, Izunaso told journalists that consultations were still ongoing and that another meeting had been slated for Friday.

“I can’t talk now. I have already said that. After our final meeting, I will talk. I am going to have another meeting on Friday and we will talk after that,” he said.

Although Ararume did not state the outcome of the meeting, it was, however, gathered that the former senator may pick the nomination form of the party on Friday to contest for the Imo governorship seat.

Meanwhile, aspirants seeking APGA’s ticket have besieged the national headquarters of the party in Abuja.

The aspirants, predominantly from Imo, Anambra and Abia States, came to pick nomination forms to contest various positions.

So far, Imo State is leading with over 30 aspirants, gunning for governorship, senatorial and House of Representatives seats. It is followed by Anambra.

A leader of the Parliamentary Support Group, PSG, and Senator from Delta Central, Ovie Omo-Agege, has alleged that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his friends have been praying for the death of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He claimed that when Saraki and his friends’ prayer failed, they decided to plot Buhari’s impeachment.

Omo-Agege made the allegation at Sapele area of the state during the climax of his consultative visit to leaders, elders, ward and local council executives of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta central on his reelection bid.

The lawmaker also vowed that he and other APC Senators would ensure that Saraki was “chased away” from the Senate.

He said as long as he and other APC senators were in the Senate, “any attempts to impeach Buhari would not succeed.

“As we speak, we have driven him out of the APC and we would also sack him as Senate President and chase him away from the Senate.

“At the end of everything, he would know that it is me that is behind it.

“Saraki does not like President Buhari. He and his friends have been praying for the death of Mr. President and when they didn’t succeed, they plotted to impeach him and we have refused that. As long as we are in the senate, I want to assure that it would not happen.”

Fellaini sees no reason why United cannot work their way back into title contention as they continue to look to the future and ignore those who want to dwell on the past.

The Belgium international told the club’s official website: “The season is long and it’s only the beginning of the season.

“In the last two years, we started very well. This season, a bit less, but the season is long so let’s keep going.

The St. Paul's Catholic Church, Ugolo, Adagbrasa in Okpe local government area of Delta state which collapsed on worshippers on Sunday, September 2, was 100 years old, a report has said.

Daily Trust reports that a preliminary report by the Delta state government delegation on inquiry of the collapsed building said the church was built 100 years ago.

An aide to the governor quoting the leader of the delegation and the commissioner of works in the state, James Augoye, said the church collapsed as a result of heavily soaked waters.

He said: "The church is a 100 years old church building and in an attempt to rebuild and expand the church, the old church building collapsed as a result of heavily soaked waters occasioned by the weight of worshippers who leaned against the walls while the early morning mass was on."

He also called for necessary approvals for buildings especially public structure before construction to avoid such incidences.

Meanwhile, Mc Ebisco previously reported that a Catholic Church in Delta state collapsed during morning mass on Sunday, September 2.

The collapse of the church building led to the death of one person while many others were injured.
