donroxy: Kindly explain to me what Residency is all about ?

Is it a kinda school or work experience , are u paying for it or getting paid , is it as laborious as MBBS ..... Kindly explain in details ...

Thanks God bless !
Residency training is a postgraduate clinical training for medical doctors done in accredited Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centres. They earn salaries because they also help their training consultants to run clinics, see patients during rounds and can do those dreaded 30 days consecutive call (day and night) It's not easy at all, but that's the price to pay to be a specialist in your chosen field. The exams are not funny too.

It is more demanding than just mbbs, only that you are earning huge salary. Mind you, they deserve every kobo of it. After residency, you are confered a Fellow. That means you are now a specialist. But I guess you've not entered school yet. These information is bigger than you. Infact you dont need it sir. Focus on what you av to do first to enter school. Send me a pm. I can coach you on wat to do. Thank you.

Re: 12 Things I Learnt From The Medical School by donhils: 9:37pm On Jul 31, 2014
mentorandfriend: No masters in medicine. You can get direct entry to start from 2nd year if you make first class or 2_1.
It's not a must you make 2.1 or first class.

Holding #Lastma sign!!!!! Y'all forgot to mention the HUMBULINE secretions some exams will cause you! At some point, after exams you no longer talk or brag...else after all your noise you go to the scoreboard & see something different.

mentorandfriend: 3) ANY AVERAGE STUDENT CAN STUDY MEDICINE.
There is no truer statement. In medicine, your only challenge is to just make sure you know a lot. Cram everything. Read, read and read again. No flash of genius. If I have a very intelligent child, I'll send him to study aeronautical engineering, nuclear physics, or computer engineering. Truth is that an average student can pass through medicine if he can sit down and read. For nuclear physics, what will you do with those long equations? Just asking.

You are one of rare intelligent thinkers I have seen opined on this issue because only a deep person could come up with the aforementioned lists but this point particularly got my respect.
One of the most (if not the most) metaphysical branch of knowledge in the world is the attempt to understand 'Space and Time' using those long equations and it sure requires great intelligence. They call it Electromagnetics, where everything exists only in two domains -time & frequency,
its the course where you apply everything you have known in your educated life as far as Math and Physics is concerned, from BODMAS to Schrödinger and from Ohms law to Poynting...

I have a feeling the OP will not do badly if he had chosen the physics/engineering disciplines too afterall biochemical pathways in courses like Biochemistry/Pharmacy have very long and complex equations as well...I dread those courses

Thanks bro. Just wondering at ur curiousity sha. As for patients, they will not only come; they show up in droves. They already overwhelm us here at our Teaching Hospital. Hope the Federal Government opens more tertiary health centres, and hope more doctors graduate every year. Cheers.

What do you mean by "metaphysical"? Is that some kind of academic pursuit? People have different cognitive aptitudes and so comparing disciplines in this way or deducing comparative intelligence by comparing the content of material in such a spurious and superficial way demonstrates not only a weak undergraduate mind set but a poor knowledge of epistemology.
To surmise that medicine is about the ability to remember "facts" is shallow. That is a very Nigerian approach to education and learning and that is why there are few discoveries or innovations out of Nigeria.
Where do facts come from? It is relatively easy to learn how to use mathematical formula but figuring out those formula in the first place happened when there were no books to read and remember. This is just as true in medicine and so thinking is more important than memorizing
Is there a MEDICAL MOSES who climbs a medical mount and then comes down and fills books with knowledge for students to remember? Most doctors are technicians but a few are SCIENTISTS who constantly review and update knowledge which the technicians remember for their exams. That is why today we have vaccines for polio, why small pox has bee eradicated etc. You do not innovate by reading and remembering but by thinking and experimenting. In other words the purpose of knowledge is to improve life for all humanity and that is not simply done by reading other peoples thoughts. The mobile phone, X-rays, smart phones, vaccines, Eye glasses etc are all examples of the human mind at work. This is seen in medicine, engineering, architecture, transport etc no one is less valuable as long as it improves lives. Reading and remembering improves little and the best doctors are not those who remember most.

The only comment I will make about studying medicine is those who are best at reading and remembering are more likely to get an opportunity to study medicine at undergraduate level, this has nothing to do with how easy or hard medicine is but is about competition for limited opportunities but passing exams is very different from medical practice

Please I need advice. I like medicine but at same time, see it as a difficult and stressful course. Now I want to study PSYCHOLOGY. I need someone to advice me.
Re: 12 Things I Learnt From The Medical School by Thewhizzkid1(m): 7:02pm On Aug 01, 2014
I know what it takes to study medicine...I know how hard it is to study medicine...I know that one is not allowed to move on if one doesn't pass one's national medical examination in one's fourth year in medical school...I know the stress of practising medicine even after graduation...I know that 70% of the doctors(including my uncle) I meet will not advice me to study medicine....I know that being a doctor is virtually the toughest and most challenging profession except the military.. But I know I can study medicine and surgery...Not because of the money involved or the respect they get, but just because I love it...I love anything medical...I chose medicine because it is the best medical profession...I pray I will fulfill my dreams...PRAY FOR ME...Anyway, I applied to study medicine this year at AAU, Ekpoma...Post utme results are not yet out but I'm believing on God for the best..Still need coaching and prayers from my ogas and madams at the top..Thanks..

The explanations above are almost entirely right but reveal a faulty inference somewhere or a deliberate oversight about the previous quote or the topic.

1. Unlike some folks, I never rated any discipline as harder or easier than the other nor did my response pointed out that remembering is better than thinking nd vice versa. While every discipline need both, the pattern of thought is different and deeper for some, yet new discoveries in every field of knowledge are made and sustained by the thinkers of that discipline.

2. The OP asked a question 'about equations' which is a content question.
The output on an electrocardiograph is possible because somone was a ble to think (with and beyond) the equations. Despite recognizing his form of thought I pointed out even where his judgements might not be entirely correct to show all disciplines including his medical domain, do have areas that he considered as 'reserve for intelligent people.'

3.The OP was talking about 'what he learnt in medical school' not practice. In Every discipline, passing exams is very different from practice...what gets them qualified is a test of their cognitive aptitudes in their different fields anyway. Have you ever asked why it is a common statement that "Examinations are not the best way to test ability" yet No better method have been devised. Have you?

The assumption that metaphysical connotes only one meaning suggests that there is an interpretation mismatch from author-audience perspective. Asking if it's a form of academic pursuit then I'm almost embarrassed because if you didn't know, it is.
And the hasty presumption that it is only a form of wizardry or extra terrestrial phenomenon (by most folks including supposedly 'deep' minds) is erroneous.

One may not agree with everything said on a forum like this but judging a comment as 'nigerian approach' even if it is nonsense, is not very civil especially if it is coming from someone who's had the best of 'balanced' undergraduate exposure fortified with 'strong' knowledge & origin of words. We do not have a Galatian approach. Do we?

Kindly re-read my first quote of the OP again, will you?

joker5180: read the MDCN code of conduct handbook the answer is there and no medical doctor leaves patient "at the point of death" to proceed on strike, get your facts together.
So if a patient is about dying and is rushed to say FMC Owerri, which doctor is there to attend to the patient?

bros are you oriented? Your initial post implied that we abandoned patients at the point of death and proceed on strike. A medical doctor/dentist can not be hold responsible for death of a person when the former is on strike, there was no contract between them. Read the handbook to get enlightened.
